There is a simple filter for this decision and it costs nothing to apply. Sit with a register for a few minutes and try to describe it. If you find yourself using several adjectives and enjoying the exercise, it is probably too much character for a card night. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

Is there a Diwali or card-night fragrance in the SOSA range?
There is no festival-specific or occasion-specific blend, and we would rather tell you that plainly than invent one. What exists is seven hotel-inspired registers, so the honest question is which of them behaves well across a long seated evening in a warm room full of food. On that basis the answer is the clean and dry end. The Westin-inspired white tea, aloe and cedar is the quietest of the seven and the easiest to sit inside for hours. The Ritz-Carlton-inspired white tea, bergamot and cedar has a bright lift that reads well beside kebabs and chai. The 1 Hotels-inspired cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves is the driest and greenest and works beautifully in a home with wood, stone and plants. The St. Regis-inspired amber, violet and woods is what most people picture for a Diwali evening and it is genuinely lovely after dark, but it asks more of a guest who cannot leave the room, so give it space and a light hand. Which SOSA register is the strongest, so people can smell it over the food?
We do not publish comparative strength figures for the seven registers and we would be making them up if we did, because throw in practice is set by the machine, the intensity setting and the volume of the room rather than by the blend itself. What is fair to describe is character: a warm amber-and-woods register reads as more present in a room than an airy white-tea one, which is a perceptual observation rather than a measurement. But the goal behind the question is the deeper problem. A fragrance loud enough to be smelled over a table of kebabs, mithai and chai is loud enough to be an object in the room, and at a card party it is an object that twelve seated people are stuck with for six hours. It also loses the fight anyway, because it is competing with continuous cooking, marigold, incense elsewhere in the house and everybody's own perfume. Choose for character, run it gently, and put the impact where noses are fresh, which is the front door.
Can I run one register at the entrance and a different one in the card room?
It sounds appealing and it is the reliable way to make a house smell confused. A nose reads two unrelated pleasant smells at once as chaos rather than as richness, and the doorway between them is exactly where a guest notices that something is off without being able to say what. A card night makes this worse than usual, because the same people cross that doorway all evening for chai, for the washroom and for the balcony, so the gap gets walked twenty or thirty times rather than once. In most homes the point is moot in any case: the entrance, hall and living room are one connected volume with no doors between them, so they are one body of air whether you plan it or not. Run one register across the connected volume, and where a door genuinely closes put a reed from Rs 749 in the same fragrance family so the change at the threshold is a shade rather than a subject change. Retire the gel pot, the plug-in and the room spray for the evening.
Does a fragrance stop working after a few hours, so I should switch it mid-evening?
It has almost certainly not stopped working, and switching is the wrong move. What happens is that your nose, and everybody else's in the room, stops reporting a smell that has not changed - which happens within minutes rather than hours and is why the register you chose seems to have vanished by ten o'clock. Introducing a second register on top of the first does not fix anything: the original one is still in the room and on the soft furnishings, the new one lands on top of it, and the result is the two of them together, which is the one thing nobody wants in a room they cannot leave. If you genuinely suspect the level has dropped, because the balcony door has been open all evening or the schedule ended, the way to find out is to step outside the front door for a few minutes and walk back in. That first breath is the truth. Adjust from that, downward more often than upward, and never by adding a second scent.
Somebody at the table is sensitive to fragrance. What should I do?
Turn it down or off, open the balcony door for a while, and treat what they told you as information rather than as a preference to be negotiated. A card evening is the least forgiving setting for fragrance sensitivity in the whole hosting calendar, because the person is seated in one room for hours with no polite way to move away from the source and no reasonable moment to leave. Indian gatherings at Diwali also routinely include pregnant women, elderly relatives, small children and people prone to migraine, none of whom chose your fragrance. The practical version is easy: run the register in the entrance and the passage where people pass through briefly, keep the card room close to unscented, and if you want the room to feel cared for, do it with an aired room, clean surfaces and fresh flowers instead. Anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal rather than a tolerance problem.
