Founder Diaries · Scent Distribution · Even Distribution
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated August 2026
Because they are measurements of two different things, and only one of them is a number. Strength is a height. Distribution is a shape. If you could draw the fragrance concentration across your bedroom — a line running from the bottle, past the desk, to the far wall — strength would be how tall that line gets at its highest point, and distribution would be the whole outline of it. A strong diffuser raises the line. It does not flatten it. And here is the part that explains every disappointing purchase in this subject: raising the line raises every point on it in the same proportion, so the corner and the far wall keep exactly the same ratio to each other that they had before. You get a louder version of the same shape.
Quick answers — read this first
Strength is the peak height of the concentration; distribution is the shape of it across the room. A stronger-smelling diffuser scales the whole curve upwards. Only moved air changes its shape.

The diagnostic, which you can run tonight: add reeds or move to a more intense fragrance. If the corner becomes overpowering before the far side of the room becomes pleasant, you do not have a strength problem. You have a shape problem, and no amount of extra output will fix it — it will only make the near end unbearable while you wait for the far end to arrive.

Why a reed makes that shape: it is a point source with no transport. Oil climbs six fibre reeds and evaporates from their surface, and nothing in the object moves air, so concentration is highest at the bottle and falls with distance. It produces a fragrant zone rather than a fragranced room, by design.

What flattens a shape, in order of cost: close the door, then a ceiling fan on low — free, immediate, and genuinely the transport a reed lacks — then an active diffuser, which disperses the oil inside the machine and pushes it out as a moving stream. Sukoon ₹1,899, 270–320 sq ft, is where the honest ladder begins.

What does not flatten a shape: more reeds, a bigger bottle, a deeper fragrance, or a second diffuser — which makes two hills with a valley between rather than a plateau.
The short answer
Short answer: strength is one number and distribution is a whole curve, and changing the first does not change the second. Fragrance concentration in a room is not a single value — it is different at every point, high beside the source and lower further away. “A strong-smelling diffuser” describes the value at the top of that curve. “Good distribution” describes how little the curve varies between one part of the room and another. You can have a very strong diffuser with terrible distribution, which is the commonest situation in Indian homes, and you can have a modest one with excellent distribution, which is what a well-scented hotel corridor actually is.
The reason more output never fixes it: a point source scales. Double what leaves the bottle and you roughly double the concentration everywhere along the line at once — near and far both rise, and the ratio between them is untouched. If the far wall was a tenth of the corner before, it is still a tenth of a bigger corner. That is why people who add reeds, buy a bigger bottle or choose a deeper fragrance report the same outcome each time: the strong corner got stronger and the room did not change character.
What changes a shape is mixing, and mixing requires moved air. Air that travels carries fragrance from where there is a lot of it to where there is little, which is the only process that flattens a concentration curve across a room. A reed cannot supply it; a ceiling fan on low can, for nothing; an active diffuser supplies it as part of its design, by breaking the oil into an airborne mist and pushing it out as a moving stream.
And a note on perception, because it makes the shape look sharper than it is. The real gradient is smooth. Your nose reports change far better than steady state, so a smooth falloff is experienced as a corner with an edge. Nothing is faulty; you are simply a very good detector of differences and a poor detector of levels.
Straight answer
Why is fragrance distribution a different thing from having a strong-smelling diffuser?
1. Because concentration is not one number, it is a value at every point in the room. Beside the bottle it is high. Two metres away it is lower. At the far wall it is lower still. Strength describes the tallest point. Distribution describes how much the rest of the room differs from it. Two rooms can have identical peak concentration and feel completely different to live in, because one is a spike and the other is a plateau.

2. Because increasing output scales the curve and never reshapes it. This is the mechanical heart of the matter. A point source spreads its output the same way regardless of how much output there is, so more emission raises the near end and the far end together and leaves the proportion between them exactly where it was. That is why the sequence so many people run — more reeds, then a bigger bottle, then a deeper scent — produces the same result three times.

3. Because reshaping requires transport, and a reed has none. Oil climbs six fibre reeds and evaporates from their surface at whatever rate temperature, humidity and airflow allow. Nothing in the object moves air. So the room’s own air movement does the entire job of distribution, and if the room is still, the curve stays as steep as the day you unwrapped the bottle.

4. Because the difference has a symptom you can check. If turning the output up makes the near corner cloying before the far side becomes pleasant, that is a shape problem announcing itself. A genuine strength problem behaves differently: the whole room comes up together and simply arrives at “enough” when you add reeds.

5. And because the fix for each is a different kind of thing entirely. A strength problem is fixed with a dial — reed count, bottle size, a more intense composition. A shape problem is fixed with air — close the door, run the ceiling fan on low, or buy a device that moves air itself. Money spent on the wrong one of those two is money that changes nothing you care about.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, composed in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: strength is the height of the concentration curve and distribution is its shape. More output scales the curve; only moved air flattens it. If the corner becomes too much before the far wall becomes enough, you have a shape problem, and the first fix is free — close the door and put the ceiling fan on low.
SOSA Evening Calm lavender and chamomile reed diffuser
The softest thing we make, and why that is relevant
Evening Calm 50ml ₹799
At 8.9 on the SOSA strength scale this is deliberately the gentlest scent in the range — Kashmir lavender, real chamomile, a soft musk drydown. It is here because it makes the argument neatly: the strength scale measures perceived intensity, not reach. A 9.5 does not travel further than an 8.9. It simply arrives louder at the same distance, which is a decision about taste rather than about coverage. 6–8 weeks on the 50ml, six fibre reeds, refillable glass.

Height, shape, and the ratio that never changes

I find it helps to hold three separate pictures in mind, because the words strong and everywhere get used interchangeably in this category and they describe different properties of the same room. Each of the three below is a thing you can actually observe in your own bedroom this evening.

1
PROPERTY ONE · HEIGHT
Strength is the peak, and it is the easy thing to buy
SOSA Fresh Brew reed diffuserFresh Brew₹849Everything on a product page that sounds like power is a height specification. Reed count — six is full projection, three is a soft bedside level that roughly doubles the life. Bottle size. The composition itself: our own scale runs from Evening Calm at 8.9, the softest, to Fresh Brew at 9.5, the deepest, with Garden Bloom at 8.9, Morning Freshness at 9.0 and Mountain Breeze at 9.4 between them. Every one of those levers raises the peak. Not one of them touches the shape. That is worth saying plainly because a strength scale is exactly the kind of number a buyer reasonably assumes is a coverage number, and it is not one.
Buy on height when: the room is pleasant everywhere but too quiet, or too loud, and you want the whole thing shifted up or down.
2
PROPERTY TWO · SHAPE
Distribution is the outline, and only air changes it
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic diffuserSukoon₹1,899A curve is flattened by mixing, and mixing means air travelling from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower one. That is the entire mechanism. A reed diffuser supplies none of it; molecular diffusion alone is far too slow to cross metres of a room usefully, so the room’s incidental air movement — convection off a warm wall, a running AC, a draught under a door — is doing all of the distribution work, and none of it is under the bottle’s control. An active diffuser supplies transport as part of its design: it breaks the oil into an airborne mist inside the machine and pushes it out as a moving stream, which entrains room air and sets a circulation going. Evenness is a property of moved air and it cannot be bought any other way.
Buy on shape when: one part of the room is right and another part is nearly nothing, at any output level you try.
3
PROPERTY THREE · PERCEPTION
Why the shape feels sharper than it really is
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuserGarden Bloom₹799The actual concentration gradient in a room is smooth — there is no wall, no boundary, no line on the floor. But the nose is a change detector rather than a level meter, so walking across a gradient registers strongly while standing in one registers hardly at all. That is why a smooth falloff is experienced as a corner with an edge, and it is also why you can sit inside a properly scented room and honestly report smelling nothing: a constant stimulus is what receptors adapt to, usually within minutes. The signal keeps arriving and your brain stops forwarding it.
The consequence: you are the wrong instrument for this measurement. Leave the room for fifteen minutes and walk back in, and ask a visitor. Someone who does not live in the house will tell you the truth in one sentence.

The test that tells you which of the two problems you have

This takes an evening and costs nothing, and it is the most useful thing on the page. Increase the output and watch which end of the room changes first. If you are running three reeds, put all six in. If you are already at six, move the bottle closer to where you sit, which raises the concentration where you are without changing anything else. Then pay attention to two places: the spot beside the bottle, and the point in the room farthest from it.

If the far point becomes pleasant while the near spot stays comfortable, your problem was height. The room was simply under-dosed, the curve was already reasonably flat, and you have now lifted the whole thing into range. A larger bottle, all six reeds, or a deeper composition will hold it there, and you are finished for about ₹749 to ₹1,349.

If the near spot becomes cloying while the far point is still nearly nothing, your problem was shape — and the important thing to understand is that this outcome is not a failure of the product or of the fragrance. It is the correct behaviour of a point source with no transport, and it tells you something precise: no quantity of additional output will ever bring the far point up without making the near one unpleasant, because the two move together. That is the moment to stop spending on emission. Everything after this paragraph is about the other axis.

Every fix, scored on height and on shape

The same list of options everyone considers, sorted by what each one actually does to the curve. Read the third column as the answer to the question in the title of this page.

Height versus shape
What each change does to the concentration across a room
What you might do Effect on the peak (strength) Effect on the shape (distribution) Cost
Three reeds up to six Raises it, and shortens the bottle None — the curve keeps its proportions ₹0, but roughly halves the life
50ml up to 130ml None in itself — same six reeds, same wetted surface None. Volume is duration: 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 About ₹500 more
A deeper composition, 8.9 up to 9.5 Raises perceived intensity None. The scale measures loudness, not reach ₹749–₹849
A second reed diffuser across the room Raises it in two places Two hills with a valley between — the midpoint is the farthest point from both sources Another ₹749–₹849
Halve the bottle-to-person distance Raises it a great deal where you are None — but it moves you to a better part of the curve, which is often enough ₹0
Close the door Raises it, by containment Mildly flattening — less of the room is being flushed ₹0
Ceiling fan on low ★ Broadly neutral Genuinely flattening — this is real transport, applied to reeds you already own ₹0, and a shorter bottle
An active diffuser — Sukoon ₹1,899 Adjustable, by setting The largest change available — dispersal and transport both happen inside the machine, across 270–320 sq ft ₹1,899, plus power, refilling and added humidity

One dial for height, one machine for shape, one bottle that never breaks
The SOSA principle
More output scales the curve. Only moved air reshapes it.
Which is why the strong corner and the empty far wall keep the same ratio no matter how much you spend on the bottle — and why a fan, which adds no fragrance whatsoever, changes the room more than a deeper scent does.

Flattening the curve for nothing, before you flatten it for money

Two of the free fixes below are pure height and two are genuinely shape, and I would like you to have all of them before any recommendation. Reed count — six for full projection, three for a soft bedside level that roughly doubles the life; that is your height dial and it is free in both directions. Distance — halving the gap between the bottle and where you actually sit or sleep does more than any change of scent, because it moves you to a taller part of the curve rather than trying to lift the whole thing. Height off the floor — at or slightly below nose height, on a surface, never the floor and never a high shelf. Placement relative to draughts — out of a running AC’s blast, off the windowsill and away from an open balcony door, but not in a dead corner either, since a bottle in the room’s circulation is distributed and a bottle in the room’s exhaust is exported.

Then the two that change the shape rather than the height. Close the door, because containment stops the room being continuously flushed and keeps what you have already released; it costs nothing and it is half of concentration. And turn the ceiling fan on low, which is the single most effective free change in this whole subject. A fan is the transport a reed structurally does not have. It moves air from the strong corner into the weak ones and mixes the volume, which is precisely the operation that turns a spike into a plateau. It shortens the bottle, because moving air over a wetted surface speeds evaporation, and I would rather you knew that going in. Most people who try it find that a shorter bottle in a room that smells right everywhere is a better bargain than a long bottle in a room with one good corner.

A stronger diffuser gives you a louder version of the same shape. The corner and the far wall keep exactly the ratio they always had, no matter how much you spend on the bottle.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

If free is not enough — what to buy, and the gap

Work the free list for a week and judge it by walking into the room after fifteen minutes away rather than by sitting in it. If the shape is still wrong, this is the order I would spend in. The last row is the thing I cannot sell you.

The honest ladder
Buying for shape rather than for height
Step What it is Which property it fixes Price
1. Door closed, fan on low ★ Containment and real transport, applied to what you already own Shape — and a large share of readers finish here ₹0
2. A reed sized to the room 50ml for up to about 150 sq ft, 6–8 weeks; 130ml above that, 14–18 weeks Height, and duration. Never reach ₹749–₹1,349
3. Sukoon ₹1,899 Ultrasonic water mist, 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18h on low, three 15ml scents in the box Shape, properly — and very often the correct bedroom answer ₹1,899
4. Safar ₹3,999 Waterless cold diffusion of undiluted oil, 20ml, cordless, three speeds, a 1 / 2 / 3-hour auto-off. Named and sold as a car and travel diffuser Shape at personal scale, with recharging and no set-and-forget ₹3,999
Megh ₹3,499 — the trap in our own range Six litres and about 100 hours of runtime, but only about 215 sq ft — less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon Duration and humidity. Never a coverage upgrade ₹3,499
The honest gap Vaayu ₹11,999 is rated to 1000 m³, roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft, and is the wrong purchase for one bedroom — and between Safar and Vaayu SOSA has no mid-sized waterless bedroom nebuliser Said plainly, because nothing here is “a Vaayu for one room”
Honest notes for buyers: SOSA reed diffusers come in 50ml and 130ml only, alcohol-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier rather than DPG, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, composed in Pune. The 8.9–9.5 strength scale measures perceived intensity in the room, not quality and not coverage. No published figure exists for how far a reed projects and none is quoted here; no coverage figure is published for Safar and none is quoted here. Changing mechanism may mean changing scent — reed oil cannot go into an ultrasonic machine, the water-based Hotel Collection cannot go into reeds, and there is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with any hotel brand.
SOSA Day & Night reed diffuser duo
When two bottles genuinely are right
Day & Night duo ₹1,498
Two sources will not flatten one room — they make two hills with a valley between, and the midpoint is the farthest point from both. But two bottles are the correct answer in several real cases: a long or L-shaped room used at both ends, two rooms that are really one volume, or when you want a different scent in each zone. Morning Freshness and Evening Calm, 50ml each, six fibre reeds apiece. 130ml pair ₹2,498.

A note from Sonal

The reason this distinction matters so much commercially is that the whole category is priced and marketed on height. Strength is easy to describe, easy to compare and easy to put on a label, and so every listing is a competition to sound like the loudest thing on the shelf. Shape is harder to talk about and it is the thing people actually mean when they say a room smells lovely.

I would go further. Dose is the reason a fragrance reads as expensive in one house and cheap in another. Almost any composition, at too high a concentration, collapses into one sweet or one sharp impression — and that flattening is what most people mean when they say something smells like an air freshener. So a strong corner is not merely uneven; at the peak it can be an actively worse version of the fragrance than the same oil at a modest level. Restraint costs nothing, and the reeds are the cheapest instrument of restraint in the house: three instead of six, and the bottle lasts roughly twice as long into the bargain.

None of which is an argument against reed diffusers, and I would not want it read that way. A reed is silent, needs no power or water, has nothing to fill, charge or remember, keeps working in a power cut, costs roughly ₹13–₹15 a day and never breaks. It is an object rather than an appliance, and it is on my own bedside table. It is simply an object that sets a height and leaves the shape to your room. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl’s classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between fragrance distribution and fragrance strength?
Strength is the peak concentration — the tallest point on the curve, usually right beside the diffuser. Distribution is the shape of that curve across the whole room: how much lower the far side is than the near side. Increasing output raises every point on the curve together and leaves the proportions between them unchanged, so a stronger diffuser gives you a louder version of the same shape. Only moved air flattens the shape.
How do I tell whether I have a strength problem or a distribution problem?
Add reeds, or move the bottle closer, and watch both ends of the room. If the far point becomes pleasant while the near spot stays comfortable, it was a strength problem and a larger bottle or all six reeds will settle it. If the near spot becomes cloying while the far point is still almost nothing, it is a shape problem, and no further output will fix it — the two ends rise together, so the near one will always arrive at too much before the far one arrives at enough.
Will a stronger-smelling fragrance oil give me better room coverage?
No. Our own scale runs from Evening Calm at 8.9, the softest, to Fresh Brew at 9.5, the deepest, and it measures perceived intensity rather than reach. A 9.5 arrives louder at the same distance; it does not arrive at a greater one. If a room is unevenly scented, moving to a deeper composition makes the strong corner stronger and leaves the weak side almost exactly where it was.
Would two diffusers make the room even?
No — two passive sources make two concentration peaks with a valley between them, because neither one moves air, and the midpoint is the farthest point from both. Two is genuinely right in several cases: a long or L-shaped room used at both ends, two rooms that are really one volume, when you want a different scent in each zone, or when the budget is short of a machine. It is not right when the goal is evenness across one open volume.
Am I supposed to be able to smell my diffuser all the time?
No, and a diffuser you smell continuously is usually set too strong for the room. Receptors adapt to a constant stimulus within minutes, so home fragrance is designed to be noticed on arrival and at transitions rather than every moment. The correct way to judge a room is to leave it for fifteen minutes and walk back in, and to ask somebody who does not live there — a visitor is a far better instrument than a resident.
