Most advice about reed count stops at more reeds equals stronger, which is true and useless, because it does not tell you stronger where. So here is the whole chain, in the order it actually happens inside your bottle and in the air above it. Follow it once and you will be able to predict exactly what any change to your reeds will do, including the changes it will not do. Nothing here implies your diffuser is underperforming. It is doing precisely what its construction allows.
Quick answers — read this first
What happens when you add more reeds to a diffuser? Four things, in sequence. First, each new reed begins drawing oil upward by capillary action, so within a few hours it is wet along the length standing above the bottle. Second, that adds exposed wet surface, and evaporation happens at the surface, so the total fragrance released per hour rises. Third, that extra vapour goes into the pocket of air immediately around the bottle, making it denser and more noticeable at close range. Fourth, because the oil supply is fixed, the bottle is now being spent faster and will finish sooner. What does not happen at any point in that chain is transport. No step in it gives the fragrance a way to move across the room.
Do more reeds make a diffuser smell stronger everywhere or just nearby? Just nearby, and the reason is worth understanding because it applies to every passive diffuser ever made. Scent leaves the reeds into the air in contact with them and then travels only by drifting into less-scented neighbouring air. That drift is slow and has no direction, and in a real room it is competing with a ceiling fan, an AC, an open door and people moving, all of which remove scented air continuously. Raising the release rate raises how much is entering the pocket at the bottle; it changes nothing about the journey out of that pocket. So the gradient gets steeper near the source rather than longer. Stronger at the table, identical across the room.
Is adding reeds worth doing at all? Yes, when the thing you want is more presence right where the bottle stands, and you accept that you are spending the bottle faster to get it. That is a real and reasonable use, particularly on a bedside table, a desk or an entry console you walk past. It is not worth doing if you are trying to solve room coverage, because that is a distribution problem and reed count does not touch distribution. For a whole ordinary bedroom the honest first upgrade is an active ultrasonic - Boond Rs 899, Sukoon Rs 1,899 or Megh Rs 3,499 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299, which is cheaper than the Safar. For strong undiluted scent in the space you occupy, the waterless SOSA Safar is Rs 3,999.
The short answer
Short answer: In order: each added reed wicks oil up by capillary action, that adds exposed wet surface, evaporation happens at the surface so the release rate rises, the pocket of air around the bottle becomes denser, and a fixed quantity of oil is now being spent faster so the bottle finishes sooner. Reach is untouched at every step, because nothing in a reed diffuser transports scent - it only produces it. Result: a stronger hot spot and a shorter-lived bottle. Keep reeds for ambience where they stand, from Rs 749. Whole ordinary bedroom: an active ultrasonic from Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299. Strong and true where you sit: the waterless SOSA Safar Rs 3,999. Large or open-plan: SOSA Vaayu Rs 11,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: keep the reed from ₹749 for ambience near where it stands; an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 when you want the whole room evenly; the SOSA Safar (₹3,999, waterless and cordless, three hotel-inspired blends included) when you want it strong and true in the space you sit in; the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for a large or open-plan room.

Nothing has gone wrong with your reed diffuser. A reed is a passive system: the oil climbs the sticks and evaporates at whatever rate your room's warmth and air movement allow, and no part of it pushes scent anywhere. That is exactly why it is lovely at arm's length and quiet across the room. What has changed is what you now want from it. Ambience near where the bottle stands is one job; a whole room that smells of it, or a strong true scent right where you sit, is a different job, and a different job needs a different tool. This guide explains the mechanism first, then tells you honestly which tool matches which wish.
What actually changes when you put more reeds into a reed diffuser?
The chain is short and completely predictable. Hour one: the new reeds wet through. Oil climbs each stick by capillary action, the same way water climbs a paper towel, until the length standing above the bottle neck is damp along its whole exposed height. Hour two onwards: the release rate rises. Evaporation only happens where wet surface meets air, so having added surface you have added output, and the bottle is now putting more fragrance into the room every hour than it was yesterday. Immediately: the pocket at the bottle gets denser. All that extra vapour enters the air touching the reeds, which is the only air the diffuser has any influence over, so what you notice at close range climbs sharply. Over the following weeks: the bottle runs down faster. The oil is a fixed quantity and you have raised the rate at which it is spent, so a run of about 6 to 10 weeks at the shipped reed count shortens roughly in proportion to the sticks you added. At no point: distribution. There is no step in that chain where the fragrance acquires a means of travel. A reed diffuser is a producer, not a mover - it releases scent and then hands it to the room, and the room disposes of it via the fan, the AC and the doorway at exactly the speed it always did. That is why the honest description of adding reeds is a steeper gradient rather than a longer one. What to do with that. Keep the reed diffuser from ₹749 where its close-range strength is an asset, and tune the reed count for how present you want it there. If you want the room itself to smell of something, that needs energy behind the scent: an ultrasonic from ₹899 or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299, with the honest caveats of added humidity, some dilution and white dust in hard-water areas; or the waterless SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 for strong, undiluted scent in the spot you occupy. The chain of events, in the order it happens
Three stages, each one predictable, and one thing that is conspicuously absent from all of them.
Why this happens in your room
The chain of events from stick to nose
Keep the reed where it already works, from ₹749. If you want the whole room, an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection is the honest and cheaper first upgrade. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is waterless and cordless.
Push a fresh reed into the oil and nothing much happens for the first stretch, which is why people sometimes conclude the extra sticks made no difference and add four more. What is happening is capillary action: the reed is a bundle of fine channels, and oil is being drawn up them steadily against gravity until the stick is damp along its whole exposed length. Depending on the reed and the room this takes a few hours rather than minutes. Only once the stick is wet at the top is it contributing its full share, because evaporation happens at the surface and a dry upper reed has no wet surface to offer. This is also the reason flipping a reed produces an immediate jump: you are putting an already saturated end into the air rather than waiting for a dry one to wick through. So judge any change to your reed count the next morning, not twenty minutes later, and you will be judging it fairly.
Tip: give any change to reed count a full day before you decide whether it worked.
2
Stage two
Surface goes up, so the release rate goes up
Once the new sticks are wet, the arithmetic is simple and it is the heart of this whole subject. Evaporation happens where wet surface meets air, so the amount of fragrance a reed diffuser puts into a room per hour is set by how much wet reed surface is standing above the bottle. Add a third more surface and you release roughly a third more per hour. Double the surface and you roughly double the hourly output. This is a real, measurable increase and it is the only thing reed count controls, but notice carefully what kind of quantity it is: it is a rate of production, expressed per hour. It says how much fragrance is being made available. It says nothing at all about where that fragrance ends up, because those are two independent questions and only one of them has anything to do with the sticks. In a room with a fan, an AC or an open door, the second question is being answered by the room, continuously, and always in the same way.
3
Stage three
A denser pocket, a faster bottle, an unchanged room
Now watch where the extra output actually goes. It enters the air in contact with the reeds, because that is the only air a passive diffuser touches. From there it can only drift outward into less-scented air, slowly and without direction, while your room removes scented air at whatever rate its fan, its AC and its doorway dictate. Raising production into a system with no transport does not extend the gradient; it steepens it. The bottle-side air becomes markedly stronger, the middle of the room improves faintly if at all, and the far corner is exactly where it was. Meanwhile the oil is being spent at the new higher rate, so the bottle finishes sooner. That is the complete outcome and it is worth stating plainly: a more intense hot spot, a shorter-lived diffuser, no additional reach. If the hot spot is where you sit, that is a fair trade and you should make it. If it is not, the change you need is a machine that adds energy - an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the Hotel Collection from ₹299, or the waterless SOSA Safar at ₹3,999.
Tip: production and distribution are two different problems - reeds only ever solve the first.
The SOSA principle
Adding reeds does not lengthen the scent gradient. It steepens it. More fragrance is being made, into the same pocket of air, with the same nothing carrying it away from the bottle.
Capillary action, exposed surface, evaporation rate, consumption rate - four things reeds control. Distance is not one of them.

Start where you already are. Reed diffusers from ₹749 are passive: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849 and Fresh Brew ₹849, with 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. They give you ambience near where the bottle stands, with no power, no noise and nothing that can fail, and they are still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. If you want the room itself to smell of it, that needs an active diffuser: Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 or Megh ₹3,499 running the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, or the Pack of 7 at 15ml for ₹1,799). That is the honest first upgrade for a single ordinary bedroom, and it costs less than the Safar. Its trade-off, in our own words: an ultrasonic mixes the fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave a fine white dust on nearby surfaces. If you would rather have no water at all and want the scent strong and true in the space you actually occupy, the SOSA Safar ₹3,999 is waterless, cordless and rechargeable, diffusing pure undiluted oil by cold diffusion. For a large room or a connected open-plan space, the SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 is the genuine whole-space answer at approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, and it is honestly more machine than a small bedroom needs.

A reed diffuser is a producer, not a mover. Adding reeds makes it produce more into the same square metre of air.

The SOSA edit, passive to active
Whatever your room looks like, the logic is the same, and it has nothing to do with how big or smart your home is. A passive reed gives you scent near where it stands, and that is genuinely the right answer for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. An active diffuser moves scent into the air instead of waiting for the air to come and collect it, which is the only thing that turns "lovely next to the bottle" into "the room smells of it". Every SOSA product is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is where each one honestly belongs.
The SOSA edit, passive to active
Which one matches what you actually want - ambience near the bottle, a whole room, or strong scent where you sit
No power, no noise, nothing to fail. Still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml from ₹1,249
The honest first upgrade for a whole room, and cheaper than the Safar. Runs the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799). It mixes oil with water, so it adds humidity, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust
Active and waterless · the personal space you occupy
Cordless, rechargeable 2000 mAh, cold diffusion of pure undiluted oil: no water, no dilution, no white dust. SOSA lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, and work-from-home. Ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends. A personal-space diffuser with strong near-field projection, not a whole-room machine
Waterless cold-air to approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, Bluetooth app and timer, four hotel-inspired blends included. The genuine whole-space answer, and honestly oversized for a small bedroom
₹11,999
Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. Homes are shared. Households include children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than a visitor does, so gentle dosing is the default and the settings we suggest are lower than any machine can run. Anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with: turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. The Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each ship with their own blends; the Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and belongs in the ultrasonic machines only, and the two formats are not interchangeable. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, with no water and no dilution, that is the Safar. And if your living space is genuinely large or open-plan, that is the Vaayu, which I will happily tell you is far too much machine for a 10 by 12 bedroom.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and I have had this conversation hundreds of times, and I would much rather talk someone out of a purchase than sell them a disappointment. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your room's approximate size and a line about where you actually sit or sleep in it - the bed, the desk, the sofa, the corner you read in - and we will tell you which of these you need, including when the answer is none of them. I read those messages myself. Everything is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your room gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom.
Frequently asked questions
How long before I can tell whether the extra reeds worked?
Give it a full day. A fresh reed has to wick oil all the way up its exposed length before it contributes anything, and depending on the reed and how warm your room is that takes hours rather than minutes. People who judge at twenty minutes usually conclude nothing happened and add several more sticks, which is how a bottle ends up with far more reeds in it than anyone intended. Add one or two, leave them overnight, and assess in the morning when you walk into the room with a fresh nose. Assessing while sitting in the room is unreliable for a different reason: your sense of smell adapts to a continuous scent within minutes, which is why a fragrance you cannot detect at your desk is often perfectly obvious to someone arriving.
Does the oil climb all the reeds equally?
Broadly yes at the start, and less so over time. Every reed draws from the same reservoir and wicks at roughly the same rate when new, but reeds age at slightly different speeds depending on how much dust settles on them and how much air moves past each one. Over the weeks the channels gradually clog with heavier fragrance components and airborne dust, and a clogged reed carries less oil and releases less. That is the ordinary end of a reed's working life and it is why a diffuser that seemed strong in week one can feel quieter later even with oil still in the bottle. Fresh reeds restore it. It is also why adding sticks to an old set gives a bigger jump than you might expect, because the new ones are doing a disproportionate share of the work.
If more reeds means faster evaporation, does the fragrance change?
The balance can shift a little, and the effect is the same one you notice over the life of any diffuser rather than something extra reeds cause. Lighter, more volatile top notes evaporate more readily than heavy base notes, so early on you get more of the bright end of a composition and later more of the woody or amber end that has been left behind. Running at a higher evaporation rate simply moves you through that arc faster. It is not a fault and the fragrance is not spoiling; it is the ordinary behaviour of a mixture of materials with different volatilities. If you love a particular register, the practical answer is to keep the reed count moderate so the arc plays out slowly, and to refresh with new oil rather than trying to squeeze the last of an old bottle.
Would a bigger 130ml bottle change any of this?
It changes how long the bottle lasts and nothing about how far the scent goes. A 130ml size from Rs 1,249 is a larger reservoir, so at a given reed count it takes longer to run down, which is a perfectly good reason to buy one if you like the fragrance and want fewer replacements. Reach, though, is not a function of how much oil is sitting in the glass. It is a function of evaporation rate at the reeds and of whether anything is moving the resulting vapour, and a bigger bottle changes neither. This is the same trap as adding reeds, one step further along: you are buying more of the input to a system whose limit is not the input. If the far side of the room is the problem, the reservoir size is not where the answer lives.
What is the version of this that does fill a room?
A machine that puts energy behind the fragrance instead of waiting for the air to come and collect it. An ultrasonic breaks the fragrance into a fine mist and pushes it out into the room, which is why a Boond at Rs 899 or a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 with a Hotel Collection bottle at Rs 299 does something a bottle of reeds structurally cannot, and it costs less than our waterless unit. Its honest trade-offs, in our own words: it mixes oil with water, which adds humidity and can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas it can leave white dust. If what you want instead is strong, true, undiluted fragrance in the spot you actually occupy, the waterless SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 is the personal-space answer, and for a large or open-plan space the SOSA Vaayu is Rs 11,999.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the passive-versus-active reasoning applies to any brand's products.
Facts verified August 2026: A reed diffuser is a passive system - oil travels up the reeds by capillary action and evaporates at the rate the room's temperature and air movement allow, so concentration is highest at the bottle and falls away with distance. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. Reed prices: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. An active diffuser adds energy to move fragrance into the air. SOSA's ultrasonic machines are Boond (₹899), Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh 6L (₹3,499); they run the water-based SOSA Hotel Collection, 15ml ₹299, 100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799. An ultrasonic mixes fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser with a 2000 mAh battery, diffusing pure undiluted oil with no water and no white dust; SOSA's own copy lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, work-from-home and gifting. It ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends, chosen as one of three bundles: Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired and 1 Hotels Inspired; St. Regis Inspired, Shangri-La Inspired and Four Seasons Inspired; or W Hotels Inspired, Ritz-Carlton Inspired and Westin Inspired. No square-foot or cubic-metre coverage figure is published for the Safar, so none is stated here or anywhere else by us; it is a personal-space diffuser, not a whole-room machine. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air system covering approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, with a Bluetooth app and timer, and it ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends included in the box. Format distinction: the Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each arrive with their own blends, while the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and goes into the ultrasonic machines only. The two formats are not interchangeable. Scent perception is personal and varies between people in the same room, and coverage figures assume connected air volume rather than closed doors. Ventilation and cleaning come first; fragrance is an addition to a well-kept room and never a substitute for either, and we make no health, therapeutic or air-purification claims. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. Made in India, cruelty-free and vegan. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Questions about a specific room are answered on WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531. Imagine if Stars Hollow had its very own candle shop—filled with scents as inviting as Luke's coffee, as warm as a hug from Sookie, and as delightful as one of Lorelai's movie marathons. Welcome to Sosa home and body's very own newsletter!
