Yes, a little, and less than an architecture-minded broker wants to believe. The honest version is that the interior style does argue for a different register, that the argument is worth acting on because it costs nothing, and that the physical difference between the two properties - how much soft material is in them - will affect the viewing far more than the aesthetic one.
Quick answers — read this first
Should a modern home and a classical home be scented differently? Yes, mildly. A concrete, timber, terrazzo and glass interior sits comfortably with the 1 Hotels-inspired register - cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, the driest and greenest of the seven and the only one built around the same cool, raw, biophilic language as the architecture. A classical interior of marble, teak, mouldings, drapes and upholstery sits better with the Ritz-Carlton-inspired register (white tea, bergamot, cedar) or, where the light is generous, the Four Seasons-inspired register (citrus, floral, sandalwood), whose creamy sandalwood base echoes a warm wood-and-stone palette. Both choices are congruence rather than rules, and neither matters as much as keeping the level low.
What actually differs between the two properties for scenting purposes? The soft material, not the century. A modern minimal home is mostly hard surface - polished concrete, micro-topping, terrazzo, glass, thin rugs, few drapes - so it holds very little, echoes acoustically and often olfactorily, and the air moves freely between rooms that are frequently open-plan. A classical interior with heavy drapes, deep upholstery, carpets and full-height wardrobes absorbs and retains, which cuts both ways: it will hold a register longer, and it is also holding whatever the last five years of that household smelled like. In a classical property the cleaning and the soft-furnishing question comes first and the register second. In a modern one the register goes in easily and distributes fast, and the risk is overshooting because nothing is soaking it up.
Does matching the scent to the architecture actually change anything? Modestly, and it is worth doing because it is free. Congruence - scent matching the setting - is one of the more consistently replicated findings in ambient scent research, and it supports better evaluations of a space at moderate effect sizes. What it does not support is any claim about offers, price or how quickly a property sells, and nobody should tell you otherwise. Treat congruence as a tiebreaker between two acceptable registers rather than as a decision worth an hour of your Thursday. Getting the dose right, starting early and ventilating first will each do more for the viewing than a perfectly congruent blend at the wrong level.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes, mildly. A modern concrete-and-timber interior suits the 1 Hotels-inspired register (cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves) - the driest and greenest of the seven. A classical marble-and-teak interior suits the Ritz-Carlton-inspired register (white tea, bergamot, cedar) or, in a bright flat, the Four Seasons-inspired one (citrus, floral, sandalwood) whose sandalwood base echoes warm wood. But materials matter more than period: hard-surfaced modern homes hold almost nothing and distribute fast, while heavy soft furnishings absorb, retain and carry the last household's smells - a cleaning question before a fragrance one. Registers from Rs 299; Vaayu Rs 11,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
My two listings are a concrete-and-timber duplex and a classical marble flat. Same register or different?
Different, mildly, and for two separate reasons. 1. The congruence reason. For the modern property, the 1 Hotels-inspired register from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) - cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves - is the congruent choice. It is barefoot, biophilic and the driest and greenest of the seven, with no sweetness in it at all, and it speaks the same language as exposed concrete, raw timber, terrazzo and planting. For the classical property, the Ritz-Carlton-inspired register (white tea, bergamot, cedar) is the safe default, and the Four Seasons-inspired register (citrus, floral, sandalwood) is the alternative where the flat has real light and a warm palette - its creamy sandalwood base sits naturally with teak and marble. 2. The physical reason, which matters more. The modern flat is nearly all hard surface and usually open-plan: nothing absorbs, air moves freely, and a register distributes quickly and evenly. Start lower there than your instinct says, because there is nothing in the room soaking anything up. The classical flat with drapes, rugs, upholstery and deep wardrobes absorbs and retains - it will hold a register for longer, and it is also holding years of the household's own life, which is a ventilation and cleaning job before it is a scenting one. 3. What does not change. Both stay below the level a buyer would name. Both get ventilated and cleaned first. Neither gets anything sweet. And in both, the sweet-and-food rule and the concealment rule hold without exception - fragrance never covers a defect, and a genuine problem is a repair and a disclosure. 4. One machine does both. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, waterless, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, app and timer, mains powered) carried between the two listings runs whichever blend you load; reeds from ₹749 are the no-power option in the smaller rooms. SOSA's blends are its own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. Materials first, period second
The material difference that actually changes the viewing, the register that suits a modern interior, and why a classical one is a cleaning question before it is a fragrance question.
Why this works
Matching the register to the property, honestly
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
Hard and soft matters more than modern and classical
Walk both properties with your nose rather than your eye and the difference is not stylistic, it is material. The modern minimal apartment is polished concrete or micro-topping underfoot, terrazzo or large-format stone, glass, thin rugs if any, blinds rather than drapes, handleless joinery and often an open-plan living, dining and kitchen with no doors between them. Practically nothing in that room absorbs anything. A register introduced into it spreads quickly and evenly through the connected volume, holds very little in the fabric, and clears fast when you open the windows - which means it is easy to scent and easy to overscent, and the correct starting setting is lower than your instinct. It also means the property has almost no smell memory of its own, which is why a new modern flat so often smells only of its own construction: adhesive, sealant, polish, fresh paint. The classical interior is the opposite. Heavy drapes, deep upholstery, carpets, full-height teak wardrobes and a lot of enclosed rooms with doors. That fabric absorbs and retains, so a register introduced there is held longer and more unevenly, and rooms behind closed doors are separate air whatever the coverage rating says. It also means the property carries its own history in the soft material - cooking, incense, pets, cigarette smoke, a decade of Diwali. That is a cleaning and ventilation problem and it comes first, before any question of which blend to load.
Tip: the modern flat holds nothing, including its history - the classical one holds everything, including its history.

The modern register
Cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves speak the same language as the building
If a concrete-and-timber home has a native smell, it is the one the Hotel Collection calls the 1 Hotels-inspired register (from ₹299): cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, described as barefoot biophilic luxury - fresh green leaves, earthy vetiver and warm cedarwood. It is the driest and greenest of the seven and there is no sweetness anywhere in it, which is why it holds up in a room built from raw and cool materials where anything soft or powdery would read as an imported decoration. It is also the register that most obviously belongs with planting, and modern premium homes in India almost always have planting - a green wall, a courtyard, a deep planted balcony, a terrace with a frangipani. Placed against that, cedarwood and vetiver read as an extension of what the architect already did rather than as an addition by the broker. Two cautions. First, dry and green is not the same as invisible: vetiver has real presence and this register should be run lower rather than higher, particularly in the open-plan flats where it will travel unobstructed. Second, do not use congruence as a licence to be interesting. A modern home is still a property somebody is deciding whether to buy, and the buyer still has to imagine their own furniture in it. These are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand; character is the only comparison we make between the registers, never throw or longevity.

The classical register
Warmth is right, but not evening warmth at eleven in the morning
A classical interior - marble, moulding, teak, an art-deco Bombay flat, a Lutyens-era bungalow, deep upholstery and drapes - genuinely does want a warmer register than a concrete box, and the instinct to reach for amber and polished woods is understandable. It is still usually wrong for a daytime viewing. The St. Regis-inspired register (amber, violet, woods) is refined, plush and evening-elegant, and every one of those words describes a fragrance that will be noticed - which fails the only test that matters in a viewing. The better answers are the Ritz-Carlton-inspired register (white tea, bergamot, cedar), whose clean cedar base gives you the woodiness without the plushness and which is broadly liked across every kind of buyer, and the Four Seasons-inspired register (citrus, floral, sandalwood) where the flat has strong natural light - its creamy sandalwood base sits beautifully with teak and warm stone, and the citrus at the top keeps a heavy interior from feeling closed. The larger point about a classical property is the one from the first section: those drapes and that upholstery are holding whatever the household has been doing for years, and no register solves that. Air the flat properly, get the soft furnishings professionally cleaned where the seller will allow it, and if there is a genuine damp, drainage or smoke issue then it is a repair and a disclosure, never something to scent over. Then add a little Ritz-Carlton-inspired and stop.
Tip: amber and violet suit the room and not the hour - a plush register is a fragrance a buyer will notice, and noticing is the failure.
The SOSA principle
Match the register to the materials if you like. But the concrete flat holds nothing and the classical flat holds everything - and that difference will shape the viewing far more than the blend does.
1 Hotels-inspired for concrete and timber, Ritz-Carlton-inspired or Four Seasons-inspired for marble and teak, low in both, and clean the soft furnishings before you scent anything.

The SOSA commercial edit
Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.
Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
The modern flat still smells of construction - paint, adhesive, polish. Which register covers that?
None of them, and you should not try. A newly finished flat is off-gassing from paint, sealant, adhesive, joinery finishes and marble or stone treatment, and that is a time-and-ventilation problem with a physical resolution. Layering a register over it produces a combination that is worse than the construction smell alone and that buyers read as an attempt to cover something. Open the property up as much as the security situation allows, run fans, keep wardrobes and cabinets open so the joinery can breathe, and give it as many days as the schedule permits. Once the construction note has genuinely dropped rather than been masked, a light register on top reads as a finished home. There is a dedicated page in this section on the smell of a just-handed-over flat if you are dealing with this on a possession-stage listing.
Is a green, woody register too masculine for a family buyer?
The framing is more common than it is useful. The 1 Hotels-inspired register reads as architectural rather than as masculine to most people - green leaves and vetiver are closer to a garden after rain than to anything in the men's fragrance aisle - and the association only becomes a real risk if the level is high enough that the buyer is thinking about the fragrance at all. At the level this bank recommends, almost nobody categorises it. If you are genuinely unsure with a particular buyer profile, the Ritz-Carlton-inspired white tea, bergamot and cedar is the register nobody in any demographic objects to, and defaulting to it costs you nothing. Broadly liked beats interesting in every property you are trying to sell.
Does a double-height living room change the register choice?
It changes the machine, not the register. Height multiplies the volume for the same floor area, so a 3,000 sq ft flat with a twenty-foot living volume is a very different quantity of air from the same floor plate at ten feet, and a machine sized for the flat-ceiling version will read as absent in the tall one. The register itself is unaffected - white tea and cedar in a double-height room is still white tea and cedar. What you need is coverage that matches the actual cubic volume, and possibly a second point or a machine rated higher. The villa guides linked in this section carry the arithmetic, and there is a dedicated double-height page later in this bank. If you want it checked against your specific listing, send the dimensions to +91 96192 18531.
The classical flat has a puja room and the family burns incense daily. What do I do?
Treat it with respect and treat it as scheduling. Incense is a normal and often daily part of the household's life and it is not yours to object to - but it deposits smoke into soft furnishings, it is strongly personal, and burned shortly before a viewing it reads to a buyer as very recent and therefore as covering. What usually works is asking the family, politely and specifically, to keep the morning ritual to its normal time on viewing days rather than moving it later, and to open the windows afterwards. Do not layer a register on top of a fresh incense note; you will get a third smell that helps nobody. Air the flat, let the incense drop, and then add your quiet register if there is time. If there is not, show it on clean air - that is a perfectly good viewing.
Should the register change if the property is being shown in the evening?
Marginally, and it is one of the few cases where a warmer register is defensible - a classical interior shown at seven in the evening with the lamps on is closer to the room the St. Regis-inspired register was made for. We would still be cautious, for two reasons. Evening viewings are usually shorter and the buyer is usually tired, which makes a plush register more noticeable rather than less. And if you show the same property in the morning and the evening, switching blends between the two means the second-viewing buyer walks into a different flat, which undermines the consistency that makes air read as a property of the building. Our default advice is one register per listing, held at one level, and if you want warmth in the evening get it from lighting rather than from the air.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
