Should the entrance be scented more strongly than the rest of the house?
No, and this is the most common version of the mistake. The instinct is understandable, because the entrance is where the impression is formed, so it feels like the place to concentrate the effect. What actually happens is that a strong hall fatigues the nose within a minute or two, so the guest arrives in your living room registering almost nothing and the rest of the house reads as empty by comparison. You have spent the effect at the door and left nothing for the evening. Worse, an intense entrance is the clearest signal that a fragrance has been applied to a space rather than that a space has a character, which is the opposite of the venue effect you were copying. How do I keep the guest bathroom consistent with the rest of the house?
With a reed, in the same fragrance family, kept deliberately low. The guest bathroom is a sealed volume behind a closed door, so no machine in the hall has ever reached into it or ever will, and it is simultaneously the most important small room of any evening because every guest visits it alone, unhurried, with a nose that has partly reset after an hour indoors. Our villa has two floors and guests go upstairs. How do I keep it consistent up there?
Use the stairwell first and only then think about hardware. A stair void behaves like a chimney: warm air rises through it, so a unit placed low in the connected ground-floor volume near the base of the stairs will carry scent upward on its own, and in most two-floor villas the landing and the open upper passage end up sharing the character of the ground floor without a second machine. That is the honest answer and it is better than buying more equipment. Is there a register that reads more like a venue than the others?
The clean, dry ones read as a building rather than as a fragrance, which is what you are after, and the two safest are the Westin-inspired blend of white tea, aloe and cedar, which is the most serene of the seven, and the Ritz-Carlton-inspired blend of white tea, bergamot and cedar, which is the same calm with a brighter citrus lift and is the closest thing to the hushed, polished feeling of a grand lobby. The 1 Hotels-inspired cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves is the driest and greenest and suits a stone-and-timber house with a lot of plants. If your evenings are formal and your rooms are dark wood and low lamps, the St. Regis-inspired amber, violet and woods is genuinely beautiful, though a warmer register reads as more present in a room than an airy white tea one, so dose it lower.
