Walk into your own living room an hour before a birthday and count what is there. The cake. What is the best fragrance for a birthday party at home?
A clean, unsweet one, running in the entrance and the passage rather than in the room with the cake. Should I put a diffuser in the room where the cake is?
No. That room is already doing its job. A cake in a warm room is a strong, specific and universally liked smell, the flowers that came with the party are usually sitting in the same room, and the candles will be lit in there for a couple of minutes. Adding a register into that air does not make the room feel more special, it makes it harder to read, and if the register is at all sweet the result is a mixture that is worse than either component. There is also a straightforward safety reason to keep hardware out of that room: candles get lit on a cake, children move quickly around a table, and reed diffusers are open-necked bottles of liquid oil. Keep every fragrance product well away from anything burning and out of a child's reach, put your effort into the front door and the passage where a fresh nose actually meets the house, and let the cake room be the cake room. If you want a machine somewhere central, the connected volume of entrance, living and hall is the right place for it, not the table.
How long before the party should I switch the fragrance on?
Earlier than feels necessary, and then not again. The aim is a room that already smells settled when the door opens, not a room that is actively being scented while people stand in it, and those two things smell noticeably different. For a connected ground floor, put it on the timer a couple of hours ahead, after the cleaning and the airing rather than before them, and let a deep even layer build across the whole connected volume. Do not compensate for a late start by turning the intensity up, because that gives you a strong pocket around the machine and thin air at the far end at exactly the moment the first family walks in with completely fresh noses. Then leave it alone for the rest of the afternoon. The urge to raise it around the middle of the party is the classic error and it comes from your own adaptation rather than from the room. There will be children at the party. Does that change anything?
Yes, and it lowers the ceiling more than any other factor. Children are physically smaller and closer to the floor, they will be in the room for hours, there are usually a lot of them, and their parents did not choose your fragrance and are not going to say anything to you about it. Run gentler than you would for an adult gathering, keep the fragrance in the entrance and passage rather than in the room where the children are actually playing, and treat placement as a safety question rather than a decorative one: never within a child's reach, never on a low table, never where a cord can be pulled, and never near a lit candle. Do I need a machine for a birthday, or will reed diffusers do?
For a small birthday in a flat or a single connected room, reeds genuinely do the job and there is no reason to spend more.
