Everyone is seated, close together, for three hours
A roka has a particular shape that changes the dosing question, and it is worth being blunt about. Nobody circulates. People sit down in a small room, in a horseshoe of sofas and dining chairs brought in from elsewhere, and they stay there for two or three hours while tea comes round and photographs are taken. Two things follow. First, adaptation cuts the wrong way: you have been in the house all morning and your nose stopped reporting on it hours ago, so you are the worst judge of the level in the building, while every guest arrives with a completely fresh nose and gets the true reading in their first breath. Ask the first person through the door what they notice, within about thirty seconds, and believe them. Second, and this is the hard rule of this whole section, guests did not choose your fragrance and cannot leave the room. A roka gathering is family on both sides, which in practice means grandparents, at least one pregnant woman, small children on laps and somebody who gets migraines and will not mention it. A person sitting three feet from a diffuser for three hours is having a completely different experience from a person walking past it. Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a scent machine specially for our roka?
Almost certainly not, and it would be strange of us to pretend otherwise. A roka is one room for one afternoon with people who mostly already know each other, and the arithmetic is unforgiving of over-buying: a 300 sq ft drawing room at a 10 ft ceiling is 3,000 cubic feet, which works out to about 85 cubic metres, while a whole-home machine is rated for approximately 1000. What that room needs is airing in the morning and one quiet thing at the front door, which a reed diffuser from Rs 749 does with no power, no noise and nothing for you to remember on a day when you have forty relatives to look after. If you want a single room done properly with a little more presence, a Boond at Rs 899 or a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299 is the sensible step. The one situation where a bigger machine is a real decision is when the same house is going to host the engagement, the mehendi and the rest of the wedding week, and when your entrance, living and dining are one connected body of air. That is buying for the year rather than for the afternoon, and it is worth a WhatsApp conversation about your actual layout before you spend anything.
Can I put a diffuser next to the tilak thali so that corner smells nice?
Please do not, for two separate reasons and one of them is a safety instruction. The safety one first: the thali carries a lamp, often camphor, and sometimes an agarbatti, and no diffuser, reed bottle or fragrance product of any kind should share a surface with an open flame. Reed diffusers hold liquid oil in an open-necked bottle, machines sit near power points, and a roka is a day when the room is crowded, sleeves and dupattas are long, and things get moved without anyone thinking. Keep fragrance and flame on separate surfaces entirely, and think about where the thali might be carried to later in the ceremony as well as where it is now. The second reason is that the tilak has its own smell and it is a ritual one. Sandalwood, roli, camphor and incense are part of what is happening, not an air freshener you are free to improve on, and layering a hotel-inspired register over them reads as confusion rather than richness. The same applies with more force to a puja room, which should never be scented at all.
Our roka is partly in the courtyard. How do we scent that?
You cannot, and we would rather tell you plainly than sell you something that will disappoint you. A coverage rating in cubic metres describes one enclosed connected volume of air. A courtyard has no ceiling, so the air above it is unbounded, and it is continuously renewed by even the lightest breeze, which means a machine rated for approximately 1000 cubic metres of indoor air does effectively nothing out there. What genuinely works outdoors is proximity and flowers. Fresh mogra, rajnigandha or marigold strung at the gate and along the path, so that people pass within a foot or two of them, will do more than any hardware, because outdoors the only fragrance anybody registers is one they walk directly past. Potted jasmine near the seating, rose petals in a shallow water bowl, and a clean swept courtyard with the drains dealt with will carry the whole thing. Then put your actual fragrance where it works: the entrance, the hall, the stairs, the room where shoes and bags are left, the washrooms, and the indoor room people retreat into when the sun gets high.
What is the safest fragrance to run when both families are in the house?
The quietest one, chosen so that nobody has to have an opinion about it. Of SOSA's seven hotel-inspired registers the two safest in a mixed family room are the Westin-inspired blend of white tea, aloe and cedar, which is the most serene of the range, and the Ritz-Carlton-inspired blend of white tea, bergamot and cedar, which adds a bright lift that reads well against tea and mithai. If your home is more grounded than polished, with wood and stone and plants, the 1 Hotels-inspired cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves is the driest and greenest of the seven and sits comfortably beside the green character of marigold. What to avoid on a roka afternoon is the warm and plush end, meaning the St. Regis-inspired amber, violet and woods, not because it is not lovely but because a warmer register reads as more present in a room than an airy one and a small daytime room amplifies that. There is no published data ranking these registers by throw or longevity, so choose on character and set the level low. How far ahead of the roka should I switch anything on?
Hours ahead rather than minutes, and the reason is that you want the air to be evenly scented rather than actively scenting. If you switch something on twenty minutes before the first car arrives, what a guest walks into is a machine working: a strong pocket near the source and thin air at the far end of the room, which reads as a product rather than as a house. If it has been running gently since the middle of the morning, what they walk into is a settled, even, low level that reads as a characteristic of the building. For a roka the practical version is to air the room first with the air-conditioning off, then close up, then start whatever you are running as you begin setting out the chairs, and then leave it entirely alone. Do not raise it at the last minute because you cannot smell it - you cannot smell it because you have been in the house all morning, which is exactly why the last-minute increase is always too much.
