The bathroom: everything works in the bottle's favour
Start with the room where your reed diffuser is winning, because it explains the other two. A 60 sq ft bathroom under a 10 ft ceiling holds 60 x 10 = 600 cubic feet of air, which divided by 35.3 is about 17 cubic metres. That is a small box, and the fragrance has very little to dilute into. The door is shut for most of the day, the window is small or frosted, and the exhaust runs for a few minutes after a shower rather than all evening, so what the reeds release at breakfast is still contributing at lunchtime: the releases accumulate instead of escaping. On top of that, a bathroom used for hot showers is regularly the warmest and dampest room in the house, and warmth raises the rate at which oil leaves the reeds while humid air helps scent hang about rather than settling quickly. The bedroom: two and a half times the air, and a fan clearing it
Now the room that started the argument. A 150 sq ft bedroom under the same 10 ft ceiling holds 150 x 10 = 1,500 cubic feet, about 42 cubic metres. Against the bathroom's 600 cubic feet that is exactly two and a half times as much air, receiving the same evaporation from the same unchanged bottle, so concentration lands near 40 per cent of what the bathroom achieves before anything else is counted. Then the bedroom does what a bathroom never does: it exchanges its air all day. The ceiling fan stirs and thins whatever is released, the AC circulates and dries, the door stands open to the passage so the true volume is larger than the room you measured, and a window or balcony gets used. Every one of those exports scented air, and a passive reed has no dial with which to produce more. The result is a bedside table that smells lovely and a room that does not, which is the exact experience that brought most readers here.

Room three
The living room: over four times the air, and usually no door
The third room is the hardest, and its difficulty is only half about size. A 250 sq ft living room at a 10 ft ceiling holds 2,500 cubic feet, about 71 cubic metres, which is over four times the bathroom's air. That alone would be enough. But in most Indian homes the living room does not stop at its own walls: it flows into the dining area, the dining area opens to the kitchen, and a passage runs off to the bedrooms, without a single door in the chain. Fragrance disperses through connected air rather than through the floor plan in your head, so the real volume is larger than any number you measured. Add the busiest airflow in the house - a fan running all day, a balcony door in use, people walking through, a kitchen exhaust pulling air out of the whole connected space - and a passive bottle has no chance of building concentration anywhere except immediately around itself. A reed here is a lovely console or side-table accent. Filling the space is a job for the Vaayu, or for a Sukoon or Megh if the sitting room genuinely closes.

Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. How do I measure my own rooms properly for this?
Take a tape to the floor and the ceiling and do two multiplications. Measure length and width in feet and multiply them for floor area, then multiply that by your ceiling height in feet, which gives cubic feet. Divide by 35.3 for cubic metres if you prefer them. So a 12 by 14 bedroom is 168 sq ft, and at a 10 ft ceiling that is 1,680 cubic feet or about 48 cubic metres. Then add the second, more important observation: how many hours a day is something moving that air, and is the door open or shut for most of them. A room with a fan running twelve hours behaves very differently from an identical room with the door closed. Can one machine cover more than one of these rooms?
Only if the rooms are genuinely connected, and that is the whole distinction. Fragrance moves through air, so a machine covers whatever air is continuous with it, which is why an open-plan living, dining and kitchen can be treated as one space while a bedroom down a passage behind a closed door cannot. The Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated for approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected volume, and connected is the operative word: it will not scent a room whose door is shut. For separate closed rooms, a small machine in each is both cheaper and better - a Boond at Rs 899 with a Hotel Collection bottle at Rs 299 comes to Rs 1,198 per room. That is also our honest advice for a typical Indian flat, where the doors are the reason each room needs its own answer.
Is it worth putting a reed diffuser in a bedroom at all?
Yes, if you place it where you actually are and judge it by what it is for. A reed on a bedside table gives you continuous, gentle fragrance in the space you occupy while you read and while you fall asleep, with no power point, no noise, no water and nothing that can fail, for about six to ten weeks. That is a genuine pleasure and it is the reason many people keep a reed by the bed even after buying a machine for the room. What it will not do is make the whole 42 cubic metres smell of something when you walk in, because a passive system has no way to carry fragrance outward. Keep the reed for the bedside, and add an active diffuser only if the room as a whole is what you want to change.
Which is the better upgrade for a bedroom, an ultrasonic or the Safar?
They answer two different sentences, so start with which sentence is yours. If it is I want the whole bedroom to smell of it when I walk in, that is an ultrasonic: a Boond at Rs 899 or a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299. Do I need the Vaayu for a normal three-bedroom flat?
Almost certainly not, and we would rather say that than sell one. The Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is designed for approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected volume, and a 150 sq ft bedroom is about 42 cubic metres, so in a flat of separate closed rooms you would be buying vastly more machine than any one room can use, and it cannot reach through a shut door in any case. Where the Vaayu genuinely earns its price is a large connected space: a big open-plan living, dining and kitchen, a double-height room, or a home where you want one fragrance held evenly across a whole floor on a timer, with four hotel-inspired blends included. For a normal flat, the honest arrangement is a reed in the bathroom from Rs 749 and an ultrasonic in each room you actually want scented, from Rs 899.
