Why does a more concentrated oil not improve how far the fragrance reaches?
Because you are trying to fix the shape of a curve by moving one end of it. 1. What the curve is. In a passive system, fragrance concentration is at its maximum in the air touching the reeds and falls steeply as you move away, because it spreads into ever more air with nothing behind it. That is the gradient every reed diffuser (from ₹749) produces, in every home, at every price. 2. What concentration does to it. A richer oil lifts the whole curve proportionally. Point one
Projection is a delivery word, not a fragrance word
In perfumery, projection describes how far a scent travels from its source into the surrounding air. On skin, that is partly a formula question, because body heat and the composition's volatility do the work. In a room, it is almost entirely a delivery question, because there is no body heat and no motion unless something supplies it. This is the distinction that gets lost. People carry an intuition from personal fragrance, where a richer scent genuinely does fill more of the space around a person, and apply it to a bottle standing still on a table with a few sticks in it. The bottle has no warmth, no movement and no wearer. It has evaporation and whatever the room's air happens to be doing. So a word that means one thing on skin means something else entirely on a console table, and the reason a stronger oil disappoints is that it was bought to satisfy the first meaning while the room was asking the second.
Tip: on skin, projection is partly the formula; in a room, it is almost entirely the device.

Lifting a curve is not the same as extending it
Picture the concentration of fragrance in your room as a line that starts high at the bottle and drops steeply as you move away. Now double the concentration of the liquid. Every point on that line rises, which is exactly why the bottle and the reeds smell so much fuller and why the shop test is so persuasive. But your nose does not read percentages, it reads whether there is enough of something in the air to notice, and at the far side of a 34 or 42 cubic metre bedroom the line was already sitting far below that. Doubling a quantity that is already beneath your threshold produces another quantity beneath your threshold. That is the whole disappointment, in one sentence, and it is why people who upgrade their oil report that the diffuser smells better up close and the room is exactly as it was. Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. Frequently asked questions
Does this mean fragrance concentration does not matter at all?
It matters a great deal, just not for the thing you are trying to fix. Concentration and composition decide how full, how balanced and how convincing the fragrance is in every breath that does reach you, which is why a well-built oil is worth paying for and why a thin one is obvious immediately. In an active diffuser, where distribution is already handled by the machine, concentration is doing exactly the job you want it to do throughout the room. The point of this article is narrower and more specific: concentration cannot substitute for a carrier. Buy a good oil because you want a good fragrance. Is projection different from longevity?

Longevity is about time - how long the source keeps producing.
