Founder Diaries · Reed Diffusers · Room Size
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Large rooms defeat reed diffusers for a reason that has almost nothing to do with the fragrance, and everything to do with arithmetic that nobody in this industry states plainly. You are not scenting a floor area. You are scenting a volume of air — and volume grows in three dimensions while a reed diffuser's output does not grow at all. Understanding that changes what you buy, and usually saves you money, because the instinctive purchase is the one that cannot work.
Quick answers — read this first
The arithmetic: a 200 sq ft room with a 9 ft ceiling holds 1,800 cubic feet. A 400 sq ft open-plan with an 11 ft ceiling holds 4,400 — nearly two and a half times the air, from a floor plan that only doubled.

Why a bigger bottle does not fix it: a 130ml holds more oil and lasts 14–18 weeks. At the same six reeds it releases at about the same rate. Size buys duration, not reach.

What does work: two bottles at opposite ends. A duo is ₹1,548.

The honest ceiling: past roughly 250–300 sq ft of open volume, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the better tool. It has a fan.
The short answer
Short answer: because a reed diffuser is a passive point source with no propulsion, and a large room is a much larger volume of air to dilute the same fixed output into. A 50ml with six reeds releases the same amount of fragrance per hour whether it stands in a 100 sq ft bedroom or a 400 sq ft living-dining — the difference is that in the bedroom it is concentrated and in the living-dining it is diluted past the point of notice.
What to do instead of buying bigger: use more sources rather than more oil. Two 50ml bottles at opposite ends of an open living-dining outperform a single 130ml in the middle every time, because each creates its own envelope and household traffic joins them. If the two scents differ, make sure they share a note or a family so there is no seam where they meet.
Where reeds stop being the right tool: beyond roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open volume — or with a double-height ceiling, or a room that opens onto a balcony — a passive format is being asked to do something it was not built for. The Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft actively and includes three fragrances. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
How do I make a reed diffuser work in a large room?
1. Stop thinking in square feet. Air is three-dimensional. A 400 sq ft open-plan with an eleven-foot ceiling holds nearly two and a half times the air of a 200 sq ft bedroom at nine feet, and it is the air you are scenting.

2. Do the free things first anyway. Flip all six reeds weekly, and move the bottle to a console near the entrance to the room at waist to chest height. In a large room placement matters more, not less — an envelope in a dead corner of a big space is invisible.

3. Then add sources, not volume. Two 50ml bottles at opposite ends of a living-dining. This is the single most effective purchase for a large room and it costs about the same as one 130ml. A duo is ₹1,548 for two.

4. Make the two scents agree. Either run the same scent twice, or two that share a note — Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on eucalyptus and green freshness. Two unrelated scents create a seam in the middle of the room that reads as confusion.

5. Choose a composition that projects. In a big room, start at Fresh Brew 9.5/10 or Mountain Breeze 9.4/10. Evening Calm at 8.9 is a bedroom fragrance and will vanish in a hall.

6. Know where the format ends. Past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open volume, or with a double-height ceiling, buy a Sukoon at ₹1,899. It has a fan; the reeds do not. That is not a failure of the fragrance, it is a difference of format.

Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: a large room is a large volume, and a reed diffuser's output is fixed. More oil does not mean more reach — more sources does. Two 50ml at opposite ends from ₹1,498 beat one 130ml in the centre, and past roughly 250–300 sq ft of open volume a Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest answer.
SOSA Fresh & Grounded reed diffuser duo
Two envelopes, and no seam between them
SOSA Fresh & Grounded duo · Morning Freshness + Mountain Breeze ₹1,548 / 2 × 50ml
The pairing built for one large space rather than two small ones. Malabar lemon, peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus at one end; Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar at the other. They meet on the green, eucalyptus-adjacent edge they share, so walking between them reads as one continuous room rather than two competing ideas — which is the failure mode when people put unrelated scents at either end of a living-dining. Also as 2 × 130ml at ₹2,548 for 14–18 weeks.

Part one — you are scenting volume, not floor area

Every coverage figure in home fragrance is quoted in square feet, and square feet are the wrong unit. Fragrance disperses into a volume of air, and volume is floor area multiplied by ceiling height — which is why two rooms with identical floor plans can behave completely differently, and why so many people conclude that a diffuser that worked beautifully in one flat has failed in the next.

1
THE ARITHMETIC
Ceiling height is the variable nobody mentions
A 200 sq ft bedroom with a standard nine-foot ceiling holds about 1,800 cubic feet of air. The same 200 sq ft under an eleven-foot ceiling holds 2,200 — a fifth more air from a floor plan that has not changed at all. Scale that up and it becomes decisive: a 400 sq ft open living-dining at eleven feet holds around 4,400 cubic feet, roughly two and a half times the bedroom, against a diffuser whose output has not increased by a single millilitre. Older flats, converted bungalows and anything with a mezzanine or double-height section are where this bites hardest, and it is the most common hidden reason a bottle that performed well in one room disappears in another of nominally similar size.
The rule: pay attention to the ceiling before you pay for a bigger bottle. It is often the entire explanation.
2
THE SECOND MULTIPLIER
Air exchange — a large room usually breathes more
SOSA Fresh Brew reed diffuserFresh Brew₹849 · 9.5/10Volume is only half of it. A big living room in an Indian home also tends to have more doors, more windows, a balcony, a kitchen opening off it and more people moving through — all of which replace the air more often. Every air change flushes out fragrance the reeds then have to replace, and a passive diffuser replaces it slowly. This is why the same bottle can perform beautifully in a closed bedroom overnight and be undetectable in a hall of similar volume that has a balcony door open. It is also why a large room with heavy soft furnishing is doubly difficult: sofas, rugs and curtains absorb fragrance readily, and a big room usually has far more of them than a small one.
The tell: if the room smells of it first thing in the morning after being shut overnight, volume and air exchange are your problem — not the bottle.
3
WHY SIZE DOES NOT HELP
A 130ml is a longer bottle, not a louder one
This is the purchase people make first and it is the one that disappoints. A 130ml at ₹1,349 contains more than twice the oil of a 50ml at ₹849, and it lasts 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8. But the release rate is set by the reeds and the air, not by how much oil sits below them — six reeds in a 130ml expose the same surface as six reeds in a 50ml, so the fragrance leaves at about the same rate. You have bought two and a half months of extra life, which is genuinely good value and completely irrelevant to a room that was too big on day one. Buy the large size when you have found a scent you want to live with. Do not buy it as a coverage upgrade; there is no such thing in this format.

Part two — why two bottles beat one, and how to place them

If output is fixed per source, the only way to raise total output is to add sources. That sounds obvious written down and it is nonetheless the opposite of what most people do.

Two 50ml, opposite ends ★ From ₹1,498 as a duo Two envelopes; household traffic joins them 6–8 weeks each Best reed answer for a big room
Two 50ml at 9–10 reeds each From ₹1,498 The most a passive format can produce 4–6 weeks each Festive weeks, not year-round
Two 130ml, opposite ends From ₹2,498 as a duo The same coverage, four months of it 14–18 weeks each Buy once the scent is settled
Sukoon ultrasonic ₹1,899 270–320 sq ft actively — it has a fan and does not wait for air 16–18 hrs a fill The honest answer past the reed ceiling

Placement in a large room follows two rules. Put the bottles at opposite ends rather than in the middle, on consoles or sideboards near the entrances to the space, at waist to chest height — the centre of a room is where furniture is beautiful and where nobody walks, and a reed diffuser needs passing traffic more than it needs a good view. And make the two scents agree. Running the same fragrance twice is the safest choice and the one I would default to. If you want variation, choose two that share a note: Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on their green eucalyptus edge, and Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth and a soft musky base, which is exactly why they are sold together as the Warmth & Bloom duo at ₹1,598. Two unrelated fragrances at either end of one open space produce a seam in the middle where neither wins, and it reads as a house that cannot make up its mind.

The three things this guide comes down to
The SOSA principle
A large room does not need more oil. It needs more sources.
Output per bottle is fixed by the reeds and the air. The only honest way to raise it is to add another bottle — or to change to a format that has a fan.

Part three — where reeds stop, said plainly

There is a size beyond which I would not sell you another reed diffuser, and it is worth being specific about it rather than letting you find out by buying a third bottle. Roughly 250 to 300 square feet of connected open volume at an ordinary ceiling height is where a passive format starts losing, and the boundary comes down further if you have a double-height section, a balcony that stays open, or a kitchen that opens directly into the living area. Below that, two bottles and sensible placement will give you a properly scented room. Above it, you are asking a system with no propulsion to do a job that requires propulsion, and every additional bottle is a diminishing return.

The alternative is not a compromise. The Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft actively, runs 16–18 hours a fill on low, has steady, 2H and 4H timers with a remote, and arrives with three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances in the box, so ₹1,899 is a complete setup rather than a deposit. Crucially it does something a reed cannot do at any price: it can be turned on before guests arrive and off again afterwards. A reed diffuser is constant by design; a machine is controllable by design. Most homes with a large living area end up running both — reeds in the bedrooms, bathroom and hall where constancy is exactly right, and a machine in the big room where control is what you actually want.

Two things I would ask you not to do. Do not buy a Megh for coverage. At ₹3,499 it holds six litres and runs about a hundred hours, but it covers around 215 sq ft — less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon. It is a runtime and humidity machine for a dry room, not a bigger-room upgrade, and that distinction costs people money regularly. And do not buy a waterless machine for a flat. The Vaayu at ₹11,999 is a commercial cold-air nebuliser built for villas, lobbies and receptions; it runs neat oil and cannot take water-based fragrance at all. It is a wonderful machine in the right building and absurd in a living room.

Square feet are what estate agents sell you. Cubic feet are what you have to scent.

Honest notes for buyers: volume and coverage figures here are SOSA's own working guidance from in-house testing and customer correspondence, not laboratory measurement — ventilation, furnishing, season and how often doors stand open all change the result substantially. Our reed compositions are alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, low-VOC and IFRA-compliant on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT base, with six fibre reeds per bottle. Refills are oil only — you reuse your vessel and reeds — and reeds are not sold separately, though we advise refreshing them every few months. Reed oil does not go in a Sukoon, Boond or Megh; the water-based Hotel Collection does not go in a reed bottle; and neither goes in the waterless Vaayu, which runs neat oil and is a commercial machine. Keep away from children and pets. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

SOSA Sukoon · 500ml ultrasonic ₹1,899
Covers 270–320 sq ft actively rather than passively, runs 16–18 hours a fill on low, and has steady, 2H and 4H timers with a remote — so a large living room can be scented before people arrive and left quiet the rest of the week. Three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances come in the box, so ₹1,899 is the whole setup. Keep the reeds for the bedrooms and the hall; they do constancy better than any machine.

A note from Sonal

The whole category quotes coverage in square feet and I have never been comfortable with it, because it hides the variable that actually decides the outcome. Two customers with identical 300 sq ft living rooms can have a thousand cubic feet of difference between them, and the one with the high ceiling writes to say the diffuser is weak while the one with the low ceiling writes to say it is perfect. Same bottle, same reeds, same fragrance.

So when somebody describes a large room I ask about the ceiling and about whether the kitchen and the balcony open into it, before I ask anything about scent preference. More often than not the honest answer is two bottles rather than a bigger one, which costs about the same and actually addresses the shape of the problem.

And when the room is genuinely beyond what a passive format can do, I would rather say so and sell you a machine than sell you a third bottle you will be disappointed by. A reed diffuser cannot be turned up and cannot be turned on. Those are not faults; they are the definition of the format, and the moment you want either of them, you want something else. Everything is composed and handmade in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my reed diffuser smell weak in a large room?
Because its output is fixed and the room's air volume is not. A reed diffuser releases the same amount of fragrance per hour regardless of where it stands, so in a large, high-ceilinged or well-ventilated space that output is diluted past the point of notice. Placement and flipping help; after that, the answer is more sources rather than more oil.
How big a room can one reed diffuser handle?
As a working guide, a 50ml with six reeds suits a bedroom, bathroom, study or entryway; a 130ml suits a normal living room. Beyond roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open volume — or with a double-height ceiling or a permanently open balcony — one bottle is being asked to do too much, and two bottles or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest answer.
Is it better to buy one large reed diffuser or two smaller ones?
Two smaller ones, for a large room. A 130ml lasts 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 but projects about the same at six reeds, so it buys duration. Two 50ml at opposite ends create two envelopes and cost about the same — from ₹1,498 as a duo set.
Can I use two different scents in one open-plan room?
Yes, provided they share a note or a family, otherwise you get a seam in the middle where neither reads clearly. Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on green eucalyptus; Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth and soft musk. If in doubt, run the same scent at both ends.
Would a Megh cover my large living room better than a Sukoon?
No. The Megh at ₹3,499 holds six litres and runs about a hundred hours, but covers around 215 sq ft — less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon's 270–320 sq ft. It is a runtime and humidity machine for one dry room, not a coverage upgrade, and buying it for a big living room is a common and expensive mistake.
