Your diffuser stops misting because the water is above or below the fill line, mineral scale has built up on the ultrasonic plate, the tank ran dry and shut off, or raw oils have clogged the plate. I am Sonal Sahani, an ISIPCA-trained perfumer, and every one of these has a simple fix.
Quick answers — read this first
Why did it suddenly stop? Most often the tank ran dry and the auto shut-off kicked in, or you overfilled past the max line. Check the water level first - it fixes this more than half the time.

It has water but still won't mist. That is usually mineral scale or oil film on the plate. Descale weekly with diluted white vinegar and use only SOSA water-based fragrance, not raw oils.

How do I prevent it? Filtered or RO water, SOSA water-based fragrance only, rinse the tank every couple of days, descale weekly. That routine keeps the plate misting.
The short answer
First check: water level - above the max line or below minimum both stop the mist.
Second check: the plate - scale or oily film blocks the ultrasonic vibration.
Ran dry: the auto shut-off has done its job; refill and restart.
Prevent it: filtered water, SOSA water-based fragrance only, descale weekly with white vinegar.
Why water-based fragrance, not raw oils (illustrative)SOSA water-based fragrance — mists cleanly, made for the plateRaw essential / carrier oils — thick, can clog & damage the unit
Illustrative only. Ultrasonic diffusers atomise water; a few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance ride the mist. Thick raw oils sit on the plate and clog it.
Straight answer
Why does my diffuser stop misting?
For one of four reasons, in rough order of how often I see them: the water is above the max line or below the minimum, so the sensor or plate cannot work; mineral scale has crusted on the ultrasonic plate and is blocking the vibration; the tank ran dry and the auto shut-off did exactly what it should; or raw essential or carrier oils have coated the plate with a film. Work through them in that order and you will almost always find it. None of these means the unit is broken.
One line: check water level first, then the plate for scale or oil film.
If the plate is clogged by old oils, switch to water-based fragrance made for the mist.

The four reasons it stops

A diffuser that has stopped misting is telling you something specific. Here are the four causes, from the most common to the one that means a proper clean.

1. Water above or below the fill line. Overfill past the max line and the mist chokes or the water pushes into the air outlet; drop below the minimum and the plate has nothing to atomise. This is the single most common cause. Empty to the correct range and it usually starts again at once.
2. Mineral scale on the plate. Hard tap water leaves a chalky white crust on the ultrasonic plate. That crust dampens the vibration, so the mist gets weak and then stops. This is why filtered or RO water and a weekly descale matter.
3. It ran dry and shut off. Each SOSA diffuser has an auto shut-off that cuts the mist when the tank empties, to protect the plate. If it stopped and the tank is empty, nothing is wrong - refill and switch it back on.
4. Raw oils have clogged it. If you have been using thick essential or carrier oils, they leave a sticky film that coats the plate and blocks it. This is the one cause that is avoidable entirely: use SOSA water-based fragrance, which atomises cleanly.
Symptom Most likely cause Fix
Stopped, tank empty Ran dry, auto shut-off Refill and restart
Stopped, water sloshing high Overfilled past max Pour off to the max line
Weak then no mist over weeks Mineral scale on plate Descale with white vinegar
Sticky film, faint mist Raw oil clogging Clean plate, switch to water-based fragrance

The fix routine, step by step

Do these in order and stop as soon as the mist returns.

Step 1 - Water level. Empty the tank and refill with filtered or RO water to between the minimum and maximum marks. Never overfill, never use hot water. Restart and check.
Step 2 - Descale the plate. Empty the tank, add a little diluted white vinegar (about one part vinegar to two parts water), let it sit for a few minutes, then gently wipe the plate with a soft cloth or cotton bud. Rinse well. This clears mineral scale and any oil film.
Step 3 - Check what you have been filling it with. If you have used raw essential oils, perfumes or carrier oils, that is the likely culprit. Clean the plate as above and refill with SOSA water-based fragrance only.
Nine times in ten it is the water level or the plate, not the machine. A weekly descale and the right fragrance keep the mist coming.
The maintenance habit that prevents all of this
Filtered or RO water every time, SOSA water-based fragrance only, rinse the tank every couple of days, and descale weekly with diluted white vinegar. That is the whole routine, and it is why a well-kept diffuser lasts years.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my diffuser suddenly stop misting?
Most often the tank ran dry and the auto shut-off engaged, or you overfilled past the maximum line. Check the water level first - correcting it fixes this more often than any other single step.
My diffuser has water but still won't mist. Why?
That points to the ultrasonic plate. Either mineral scale has built up or an oily film from raw oils is blocking it. Descale with diluted white vinegar and gently wipe the plate, then use SOSA water-based fragrance only.
How do I descale my diffuser?
Empty the tank, add diluted white vinegar (about one part vinegar to two parts water), leave it a few minutes, wipe the plate gently with a soft cloth or cotton bud, then rinse well. Do this weekly with hard water.
Can raw essential oils stop my diffuser misting?
Yes. Raw essential and carrier oils are thick and coat the plate with a film that blocks the vibration. Clean the plate and switch to SOSA water-based fragrance, which atomises cleanly.
Does the auto shut-off mean my diffuser is faulty?
No. The auto shut-off cuts the mist when the tank runs dry to protect the plate. If it stopped and the tank is empty, simply refill with filtered water and switch it back on.
