Six situations, and in every one of them the right specification is nothing, which is worth publishing even though it costs us the order.
Quick answers — read this first
When should an office not be scented? When the reception does not enclose, when a staff work area cannot be kept clear of it, when nobody will own the setting, when the upkeep list above it is not done, when visitors frequently report sensitivity, or when the register cannot be agreed.
Is an unowned machine worse than none? Usually. A level nobody owns drifts upward as staff habituate, so within a year the office is at a setting nobody chose and clients are noticing it.
What should we do instead? Ventilation, cleaning, lighting, washroom upkeep and clutter. Those change how a room reads more than fragrance does and they come first in every case.
The short answer
Short answer: Six cases where the answer is nothing, and an unowned machine is worse than none.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your reception and meeting room dimensions, ceiling height, AC type, visitor numbers and how long client meetings run - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
When should a professional office not use commercial scenting?
Six situations, and we would rather set them out than sell into them. One: the reception does not enclose. If it opens onto a shared lobby, a stairwell or a corridor, it will not hold fragrance at any output and a machine will simply consume oil. This is a building question and no product answers it. Two: a staff work area cannot be kept clear of it. SOSA does not recommend scenting shared employee work areas. Somebody at a desk for nine hours cannot leave a scent they dislike or react to, and nobody at that desk chose it. If your reception shares a return, a doorway or a pressure relationship with an open-plan floor and you cannot separate them, then the honest answer is not to scent the reception either. Three: nobody will own the setting. This is the most common and the least obvious. A level nobody owns drifts upward, because staff habituate within days, conclude the machine has stopped working and turn it up, and nobody ever turns it down. Within a year the office sits at a level nobody chose and clients are noticing it. If you cannot name one person and one review date, an unowned machine is worse than no machine. Four: the upkeep list above it is not done. Inconsistent lighting, visible wear, a crowded desk, a washroom nobody checks. Fragrance amplifies what is already true and cannot compensate for what is not, and a composed smell above visible neglect reads as a firm that spent money on the wrong thing. Five: visitors report sensitivity with any regularity. If more than the occasional client mentions it, that is information rather than an inconvenience, and some practices reasonably conclude their reception should stay unscented. In a medical, legal or advisory setting, where people cannot easily choose not to attend, that conclusion deserves weight.Six: the partners cannot agree on the register. A fragrance chosen by committee compromise usually satisfies nobody, and a firm that is divided about it will end up adjusting it, which is drift by another name. What to do in all six cases. Ventilate properly, air the office before opening rather than ten minutes before the first client, fix the lighting, put the washroom on a rota with a signature, clear the desk, and service the air conditioning. Every one of those changes how the room reads more than fragrance would, and none of them is a judgement call. And if none of the six applies: a Vaayu at ₹11,999 on fragrance from ₹299, key-locked low, with one named owner. A professional office is judged on discretion, which sets a much lower ceiling than a showroom. Anything a client can consciously identify is above it. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: no enclosure, no owner, or no upkeep - then no machine.
If none of the six applies: ₹11,999, key-locked low, one named owner. Fragrance from ₹299.

Six situations where the answer is no
Three of these six are about the building and three are about the firm, and the firm ones are the commoner cause of failure.
Why this works
The six no situations
A professional office is almost always one room: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 in the client reception, key-locked low, fragrance from ₹299. Staff floors stay unscented.
Staff habituate in days, conclude the machine has failed and raise it; nobody lowers it. Within a year the office is at a level nobody chose, which makes an unowned machine worse than no machine at all.
Tip: An unowned level only ever goes one way.
02
Sensitivity is information
Not an inconvenience
If more than the occasional visitor mentions it, that is a finding. In settings where people cannot easily choose not to attend, deciding against scenting is a legitimate and defensible conclusion, and we would support it.
Tip: Several complaints is an answer, not an obstacle.
03
Committee compromise
Produces drift
A register nobody quite chose gets adjusted, and adjustment is drift. If the partners cannot agree, the stable outcome is nothing rather than a compromise that will be revisited every few months.
Tip: If you cannot agree on it, do not install it.
The SOSA principle
An unowned machine is worse than no machine, because the level only ever moves in one direction.
Which makes the owner part of the specification.

What to do instead
If you do proceed, choose a register the whole firm is genuinely content with rather than one that won a vote, because contentment is what stops somebody reaching for the dial.

The SOSA commercial range
Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

Honest notes for professional offices: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Discretion is the operative constraint in professional services, so levels are set lower than in retail, long-duration meeting rooms carry the least, and staff working areas are kept out of the scented volume unless the people who work there have been asked first. Pantry and food odours reaching client areas are an extraction and layout matter. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases footfall, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, transaction value or customer spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it feels - and is not a commercial performance claim. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. A note from Sonal
Professional services is the one commercial category where being noticed is a liability. A client arriving at a law firm, a CA practice or an advisory office is assessing judgement and discretion, and a reception that announces itself works against exactly that impression. The ceiling on what is appropriate here is much lower than in a showroom, and the businesses that do this well run levels most retailers would consider pointless.
The room that catches people out is the conference room. Meetings run for hours, everyone in them adapted within the first quarter of an hour, and the only person still noticing anything is the one who did not want it. So the long-meeting room carries the least of anything in the building, which is the reverse of how most offices set it up.
And the question I get asked most in Prahlad Nagar: does it justify itself when only ten clients a week walk through. My answer is that I will not tie this to the value of your client relationships, because I cannot. Put it in the upkeep budget beside the lighting and the air-conditioning service. Fragrance is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

When should an office not be scented?

Is an unowned machine really worse than none?
Usually. The level drifts upward as staff habituate, so within a year the office is at a setting nobody chose.
What if visitors report sensitivity?
That is information. Deciding against scenting is legitimate, particularly where people cannot easily choose not to attend.
What if the partners disagree on the scent?

Facts verified September 2026: Fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control.
