This one deserves a direct answer rather than a diagnostic, because it is usually not a fault report — it is a preference, and preferences are legitimate. SOSA reed diffusers are built to a deliberate ceiling. I would rather tell you exactly where that ceiling is, why it is there, and every honest way to work at the top of it, than let you spend your way toward something the format was never going to give you.
Quick answers — read this first
The free ladder, in order: flip all six reeds weekly · move the bottle to a doorway at chest height · close the room for an hour · then add reeds.

The reed trade: nine reeds instead of six is a fuller room and roughly five weeks instead of eight on a 50ml. Reversible in ten seconds.

The scent ladder: if you are on Evening Calm (8.9) or Garden Bloom (8.9), move to Mountain Breeze (9.4) or Fresh Brew (9.5).

The ceiling: ten reeds of Fresh Brew, well placed, in a closed room, is the loudest thing this format produces. Past that, a Sukoon at ₹1,899.
The short answer
Short answer: work the ladder in order and stop when the room is right. Flip all six reeds and keep flipping weekly; move the bottle to a console near a doorway at waist to chest height, away from the AC and out of the sun; close the room for an hour before you want it at its best; add two to four reeds, knowing that shortens the bottle proportionally; and if it is still mild, change to a composition that plateaus higher rather than to a bigger bottle of the same one.
Why ours are calibrated where they are: our compositions are phthalate-free, paraben-free, low-VOC and IFRA-compliant on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT base. Phthalate solvents are what push a fragrance hard off a reed and produce a spectacular first fortnight — and they are also what breaks down in Indian heat and gives a diffuser its acrid week six. We took the flatter, longer curve. A smaller opening is the price of that, and it is a price I would pay again.
Shop by number: Fresh Brew 9.5/10 and Mountain Breeze 9.4/10 at ₹849 for 50ml and ₹1,349 for 130ml; Morning Freshness 9.0 at ₹749. Oil refills ₹2,399 for 300ml. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
My SOSA reed diffuser is too mild. What are my options, in order?
1. Confirm it is actually mild. Leave the room for fifteen minutes and walk back in. Your nose adapts to a constant smell within minutes and adapts hardest in your own home, so you are the least reliable judge of your own rooms. If a visitor smells it and you do not, nothing on this list will help.

2. Flip all six reeds, then weekly. An unflipped reed at week four delivers a fraction of week one. Free, ten seconds, and the most common real answer.

3. Move it and raise it. Console or shelf near a doorway or walking route, waist to chest height, clear space around it, several feet from any AC vent or fan, out of direct sun. Free.

4. Close the room for an hour before you want it strongest. A closed volume concentrates a passive diffuser better than any purchase. Free.

5. Add two to four reeds. Six is the calibrated count; nine is a noticeably fuller room and roughly five weeks instead of eight on a 50ml. Free, reversible, and it costs you bottle life rather than money.

6. Change the composition, not the size. Move up the scale — Fresh Brew 9.5 or Mountain Breeze 9.4, both ₹849. A 130ml lasts 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 and projects the same.

7. Add a second bottle. Two envelopes in one large space, from ₹1,498 as a duo. Output per source is fixed; the only way to raise the total is another source.

8. Change format. If you want a room strong on demand, no reed diffuser does that at any price. A Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft with timers and three fragrances in the box.

Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: five free steps first — doorway test, flip all six, move and raise it, close the room, add reeds. Then buy strength where it lives: a higher-plateau composition (Fresh Brew 9.5 or Mountain Breeze 9.4 from ₹849), or a second bottle, or — if what you want is scent on demand — a Sukoon at ₹1,899.
SOSA Mountain Breeze Himalayan pine sage and cedar reed diffuser
Where most people who say "too mild" end up
SOSA Mountain Breeze · pine, sage & Indian cedar ₹849 / 50ml
9.4 out of 10 and the deepest composition in the reed line — real Himalayan pine, clarifying sage and deodar cedar, with no sweetness at all. It is the answer we give most often to people finding a soft floral or a lavender too quiet, because it raises presence without adding the sugar that becomes cloying in a closed Indian flat. Tested to hold its depth at 45°C and to stay crisp rather than turning bitter at 85% humidity. 130ml ₹1,349 for 14–18 weeks.

Part one — the escalation ladder, and what each rung costs

Eight rungs, five of them free. The reason to climb them in order rather than jumping to the purchase is not thrift for its own sake — it is that the lower rungs address causes that a purchase would not fix. Buying a 9.5 composition to solve an unflipped reed gives you an unflipped 9.5.

1
RUNGS 1–4 · FREE
Flip, move, raise, close
Flipping all six reeds weekly restores the delivery rate the composition was dosed for; an unflipped reed accumulates the heavy end of the fragrance and stops moving much by week three. Moving the bottle near a doorway or walking route gives the room something to carry the scent with, since a reed diffuser has no fan and depends entirely on passing air. Raising it to waist or chest height matters because fragrance released at ankle level largely stays there. And closing the room for an hour before you want it at its best turns the space into a sealed volume that concentrates rather than a corridor that flushes. Together these four are worth more than any single purchase on this page, and they cost nothing at all.
Do these first, always. If they are not done, everything above them on the ladder is being spent on a system running below its own specification.
2
RUNG 5 · COSTS WEEKS, NOT MONEY
Reed count — the only true volume control
SOSA Fresh Brew reed diffuserFresh Brew₹849 · 9.5/10Six fibre reeds is what every SOSA bottle ships with and the count each composition is dosed around. Adding reeds raises projection immediately, and shortens the bottle roughly in step — nine reeds in a 50ml is an audibly fuller room and something closer to five weeks than eight; ten is about as far as the format goes and gets you four to five. None of this is a fault and all of it reverses in ten seconds. My own habit is to stage it: six through an ordinary week, nine on a Friday before people come, back to six on Sunday, which buys a hosting-strength room for two days at almost no cost. Keep the spare reeds standing in a small glass rather than lying on a surface — the oil marks wood and stone.
The exchange rate: roughly proportional. More reeds is more room and fewer weeks, every time, in every brand.
3
RUNGS 6–8 · PURCHASES
Composition, then a second bottle, then format
If the free rungs are done and nine reeds is still not enough, the next honest step is a composition that plateaus higher — and the crucial detail is that this is not the same as a bigger bottle. A 130ml holds more than twice the oil of a 50ml and lasts 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8, but at six reeds it releases at about the same rate. Size buys duration. Strength lives in the composition, which is why we publish a number for each one. After that, a second bottle at the other end of the space raises total output in a way no single source can. And past that is the honest edge of the format: a reed diffuser is constant and passive by design and cannot be switched on, so if what you want is a room that goes strong before guests and quiet afterwards, the answer is a machine — a Sukoon at ₹1,899 — and that is a change of tool rather than a failure of fragrance.

Part two — why SOSA reed diffusers are built to a ceiling

I could make every composition in this range project harder by next month, and the method is not a secret. You raise the volatile fraction of the fragrance and you carry it on a phthalate solvent that pushes it off the reed quickly. Do both and the customer is delighted on Tuesday. The bill arrives around week five, in Indian conditions, as a fragrance that has gone thin and faintly acrid — because phthalate carriers degrade in sustained heat and UV, and because a composition front-loaded with light molecules has nothing left once they have gone. Anyone who has owned a cheap plug-in knows that arc exactly: rich on day one, chemical by day three, like a disinfectant by day seven.

So this range is built the other way round. Our compositions are phthalate-free, paraben-free, low-VOC and IFRA-compliant on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT carrier, tested through 45°C summer heat and 85% monsoon humidity, and dosed to sit at a level they can hold for the entire life of the bottle in a sealed Indian flat. The honest consequence is that our opening is smaller than some. What you get in exchange is a plateau that does not shift character in June, does not go bitter in the monsoon, and is safe to run in a closed air-conditioned bedroom for eight hours a night. That is a deliberate trade and it is the one I would make again.

Two practical implications worth knowing. First, if you have come from a solvent-boosted diffuser, everything will feel mild for the first few weeks — you are comparing our plateau against somebody else's spike, and the fair comparison is at week six, when we are still where we were and the other bottle is not. Second, our strength ratings are relative positions on our own internal scale at six reeds, not concentrations and not an industry standard. A 9.5 is not better than an 8.9; it is louder. Evening Calm is deliberately the softest thing we make, and every so often somebody asks for a stronger version of it. The honest answer is that a stronger Evening Calm would be a worse product for the room it was built for, and the right move is Mountain Breeze instead.

Anyone can win week one. The interesting question is what your house smells like in week six.

Part three — what to do, scent by scent

If your current bottle is too mild, this table says exactly where to go next, and why. The strength number is measured at six reeds in an ordinary Indian room.

The upgrade path
Your scent, and the honest next step
If you have Strength Why it reads mild Do this instead Price
Evening Calm ★ 8.9 · softest Built for sleep. Quiet is the specification Keep it in the bedroom; Mountain Breeze elsewhere ₹849
Garden Bloom 8.9 · floral Rounded and hotel-like — presence without insistence Move it to the entrance where it works best; add a 9.4 or 9.5 for the living room ₹849
Morning Freshness 9.0 · bright Light molecules disperse fast, especially in a warm room Excellent in bathrooms and kitchens; nine reeds in bigger rooms Free · costs weeks
Mountain Breeze 9.4 · deep woody Rarely reads mild — if it does, the room or placement is wrong Nine reeds, closed room, or a second bottle From ₹1,498 as a duo
Fresh Brew 9.5 · warm-deep The loudest we make. If this is mild, the room is past the format Two bottles, or a Sukoon ₹1,899
What is not on this list, deliberately: a larger bottle of the same scent. A 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 gives you 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 at the same projection. It is excellent value once you know which fragrance you want to live with, and it is not a strength upgrade — we would rather say so than sell it as one.

The three things this guide comes down to
The SOSA principle
We publish a strength number for every scent so you can disagree with us before you buy.
A 9.5 is not better than an 8.9 — it is louder. Matching the number to the room is the whole of this decision.

Everything above as a buying decision, cheapest first, with the honest gaps marked. Five of these lines are free.

The SOSA edit
In the order I would actually do it
Step What it does What it costs Price
1. Doorway test, then flip all six ★ Confirms the problem is real, then fixes the commonest cause Fifteen minutes and ten seconds Free
2. Move to a doorway, raise to chest height Gives the room air with which to carry the scent Nothing — and often extends the bottle Free

4. Nine reeds instead of six The only true volume control the format has Roughly 8 weeks becomes 5 on a 50ml Free
5. Mountain Breeze 9.4 or Fresh Brew 9.5 A genuinely higher plateau, not a bigger opening A new bottle and a change of character ₹849
6. A second bottle — duo set Raises total output, which one source cannot Two bottles instead of one From ₹1,498
7. 300ml oil refill Makes running nine or ten reeds affordable long-term Nothing — it is the cheapest oil we sell ₹2,399 · 8–11 months
8. Sukoon — a change of format 270–320 sq ft actively, with timers and control Constancy, which reeds do better ₹1,899
The honest gaps We do not sell replacement reeds separately, and there is no oud, musk or aquatic in the reed range Said plainly rather than stretched to fit —
Honest notes for buyers: strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds in an ordinary Indian room — not concentrations, not an industry standard, and not a quality ranking. Reed-count and bottle-life figures are working guidance from in-house testing and customer correspondence, not laboratory measurement. Our compositions are alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, low-VOC and IFRA-compliant on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT base, tested through 45°C heat and 85% monsoon humidity, with six fibre reeds per bottle because rattan clogs in Indian conditions. Refills are oil only — you reuse your vessel and reeds — and reeds are not sold separately, though we recommend refreshing them every few months. Reed oil does not go in a Sukoon, Boond or Megh, and the water-based Hotel Collection does not go in a reed bottle. Stand bottles on a tray and keep them away from children and pets. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA reed diffuser oil refill 300ml and 500ml
What makes running it loud affordable
SOSA reed diffuser refill · oil only ₹2,399 / 300ml
If you have settled on nine or ten reeds, the running cost is the next thing to solve. The refill is oil alone — you keep your own glass vessel and reeds — at roughly ₹8 per millilitre against ₹15–17 for a fresh 50ml bottle. A 300ml keeps a vessel going for about 8–11 months and the 500ml at ₹3,499 for 14–18 months at nearer ₹7 per millilitre. Same formula as the bottles, in all five scents. Pour to the neck, put the reeds back, flip once so both ends are coated.

A note from Sonal

When somebody tells me a SOSA diffuser is too mild, my first instinct is not to defend it. It is to ask what they were using before, because the answer explains most of these conversations. If your previous diffuser was extraordinary for a fortnight and unpleasant by week six, you were experiencing a solvent, not a fragrance — and coming off that, our plateau will feel understated for a while. The fair comparison is not week one against week one. It is week six against week six.

That said, "too mild" is a perfectly reasonable preference and not something to be argued out of. So the ladder in this article is genuine, and I would rather you climbed the free part of it than bought anything. Flip, move, raise, close the door, add three reeds. Most people find their room somewhere in there.

And if you get to the top of the ladder and it is still not what you pictured, I would rather tell you that a reed diffuser cannot do what you want than sell you a fourth bottle. Reeds are constant and passive. They cannot surge and they cannot be switched on. When those are the things you want, buy the ₹1,899 machine and keep the reeds for the rooms where constancy is exactly right — which is most of them. Everything is composed and handmade in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if my SOSA reed diffuser smells too mild?
Climb the ladder in order. Run the fifteen-minute doorway test to confirm it is real; flip all six reeds and keep flipping weekly; move the bottle to a doorway at chest height, away from the AC; close the room for an hour before you want it strongest; then add two to four reeds. Only after all five should you buy anything — and the purchase should be a higher-plateau composition, not a bigger bottle.
Why are SOSA reed diffusers not as strong as cheaper ones on day one?
Because ours are phthalate-free. Phthalate solvents push fragrance off a reed hard and produce a spectacular first fortnight — and they are also what degrades in Indian heat and gives a cheap diffuser its acrid week six. We took the flatter, longer curve on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT base instead. Compare at week six rather than week one and the picture reverses.
Which SOSA reed diffuser has the most noticeable scent presence?
Fresh Brew at 9.5/10, then Mountain Breeze at 9.4/10 — both ₹849 for 50ml and ₹1,349 for 130ml. Mountain Breeze is the one to choose if you want that presence without any sweetness, which matters in a closed Indian flat where sugary notes accumulate. Morning Freshness at 9.0 reads sharper than its number in a humid room.
Can you make a stronger version of Evening Calm?
We could, and it would be a worse product for the room it exists to serve. Evening Calm is 8.9/10 and deliberately the softest thing we make, because you are downwind of a bedroom fragrance for eight hours with your eyes shut. If you want more presence in a bedroom, Mountain Breeze at 9.4 is the honest alternative — dry and grounding rather than sweet, so it does not become cloying overnight.
Will a 130ml bottle be stronger than the 50ml?
No — it will last far longer. A 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for a 50ml, but at the same six reeds it projects about the same. Buy the larger size once you know which scent you want to live with, and buy strength in the composition or the reed count instead.
