Founder Diaries · Reed Diffusers · Surfaces
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
People ask which room a diffuser should go in, and the more useful question is which piece of furniture. A bottle on an entrance console and the same bottle inside a display cabinet three metres away are, in practice, two different products. The surface sets the height at which fragrance enters the room, how much clear air surrounds the reeds, and whether anything overhead traps what is released — and those three things decide throw. Here is every surface in an ordinary Indian home, ranked, with the reason for each position.
Quick answers — read this first
Best surface: an entrance console — waist height, hard top, open above, clear on three sides, and beside a door that keeps exchanging the air.

Worst surface: the inside of a display cabinet or a closed shelf unit. A sealed box holds the fragrance perfectly and gives you none of it.

The height rule: waist to chest, roughly 75–110 cm. Lower and the fragrance stays under the furniture; higher and it drifts along the ceiling — and you cannot reach the reeds to flip them weekly.

The rule nobody mentions: always stand it on a tray. Reed oil marks wood and stone permanently, and the good surfaces are usually the ones you care about.
The short answer
Short answer: the best placement for strong scent throw is a hard, stable surface at waist-to-chest height, open above, with roughly an arm's length of clear space around the reeds, beside a doorway rather than in the middle of a room, out of direct sun and a couple of metres clear of an AC vent or fan. In most homes that describes the entrance console or a sideboard beside the living-room door.
The mechanism: a reed diffuser is a passive point source; fragrance leaves the reeds and mixes into whatever air touches them. A surface that surrounds the bottle with still, enclosed or absorbent material — cabinet walls, stacked books, cushions, a low overhanging shelf — intercepts that mixing before the room ever sees it.
Shop: match the fragrance to the surface's room — Garden Bloom ₹799 on an entrance console, Fresh Brew ₹849 on a living-room sideboard, Evening Calm ₹799 on a bedside table. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Where exactly should I stand a reed diffuser for the strongest throw?
1. On a console or sideboard beside a doorway, at waist to chest height. This is the answer in the great majority of Indian flats. It puts the reeds at the height air actually moves through a room, next to the opening that air moves through, on a hard surface that does not absorb anything.

2. With clear space, not styling, around it. An arm's length of open air on at least two sides. Photo frames, a stack of books, a tall plant and a lamp arranged around the bottle are a small enclosure, and an enclosure is the thing you are trying to avoid.

3. Nothing low and solid directly overhead. A shelf twenty centimetres above the reeds traps the rising, warmed air and holds fragrance against the underside of the wood. Open above is worth more than most people expect.

4. Hard surface, and always a tray under it. Reed oil marks wood and stone, and it wicks down the outside of the glass over months whether or not you spill anything. A ceramic or glass coaster costs nothing and saves a sideboard.

5. Never inside a cabinet, a cupboard or a closed shelf unit. This is the single most common placement error we see, and it is not a small loss — a closed box will give you almost nothing in the room while emptying at nearly its normal rate.

6. Away from the extremes. Out of direct sun, off warm surfaces such as a refrigerator top, a couple of metres from a split AC or a fan, and back from curtains and upholstery, which absorb fragrance readily.

Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: hard surface, waist-to-chest height, open above, an arm's length of clear space, beside a doorway, on a tray. Entrance console is best; the inside of a cabinet is worst; a coffee table looks right and performs poorly.
SOSA Evening Calm Kashmir lavender and chamomile reed diffuser
The one surface where low throw is the point
SOSA Evening Calm · Kashmir lavender & chamomile ₹799 / 50ml
A bedside table breaks most of the rules on this page — it is low, it is enclosed by a headboard and bedding, and almost no air passes it. It works anyway, because throw is irrelevant when your head is a foot away for eight hours. Evening Calm is composed for exactly that: Kashmir lavender over chamomile, 8.9 on our internal strength scale at six reeds and the softest thing we make, deliberately. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, on a heat-stable CCT base. 130ml ₹1,299 for 14–18 weeks.

Part one — the three properties of a good surface

Strip away the decorating and a surface is doing three jobs for a reed diffuser: it decides the height fragrance enters the room at, it decides how much unobstructed air surrounds the reeds, and it decides what the bottle is standing on and sitting under. Every entry in the ranking further down is just those three properties scored. It is worth knowing them individually, because most homes cannot offer a perfect surface and the useful skill is knowing which of the three you are allowed to compromise. The answer, briefly, is that you can bend height a little, you can rarely bend enclosure at all, and the tray is not negotiable.

1
PROPERTY ONE
Height — roughly 75 to 110 centimetres
Waist to chest is not a decorating convention; it is where the air in an occupied room is most reliably mixed by people moving through it, and it is the height at which fragrance released will be carried outwards rather than settling or rising away. Below about 40 cm — a coffee table, a low stool, the floor — fragrance tends to sit in the sheltered layer beneath the furniture and you will smell it when you bend down and not when you sit back. Above about 150 cm the opposite happens: warmed air carries it up towards the ceiling, where it drifts along and dilutes before it descends. There is a practical argument too. A bottle you cannot comfortably reach is a bottle you will not flip weekly, and an unflipped bottle at week six delivers a fraction of what it delivered at week one.
Quick check: stand normally beside the bottle. If the reeds are between your hip and your sternum, the height is right.
2
PROPERTY TWO
Enclosure — what is beside it and what is above it
SOSA Fresh Brew reed diffuserFresh Brew₹849 · 9.5/10This is the property that ruins the most placements, because enclosure is usually created by styling rather than by architecture. A bottle in the centre of a shelf, with books on both sides and the shelf above it thirty centimetres up, is standing in a three-sided box with a lid. The fragrance rises off the reeds, meets the underside of the shelf, spreads along it and sits there. Open above matters more than open to the sides, because warm air carrying fragrance goes up first and outwards second. A wall directly behind the bottle is fine; a canopy over it is not. The extreme case is the glass display cabinet, which is not a placement at all — it is storage with a view, and it will give a room almost nothing while the bottle empties at close to its usual rate.
The arm's-length rule: clear air within an arm's length on at least two sides, and nothing solid within about half a metre overhead.
3
PROPERTY THREE
Material — hard, stable, and always on a tray
Hard, non-porous surfaces are correct: glass, marble, granite, laminate, sealed or lacquered wood, metal. Absorbent ones are not, and that includes an unsealed teak top, a raw stone slab, and anything with a cloth runner on it — a runner is a small curtain lying flat, and it will quietly take a share of the daily output. Whatever the surface, stand the bottle on a ceramic or glass tray or coaster, because reed oil marks wood and stone and it does not need to be spilled to do it: oil creeps down the outside of the glass over weeks, particularly at higher reed counts. Stability is the other half of the material question. A busy surface, a wobbly nesting table, the edge of a desk, anywhere a bag or a sleeve swings past — an overturned diffuser is a bad afternoon and a permanently marked floor. Keep it away from children and pets while you are choosing.

Part two — every surface, ranked

Here is the full hierarchy, best to worst, scored on those three properties. The heights are typical Indian furniture heights rather than rules. Read the last column if the surface you have is low down the list — most of them can be improved without buying a single thing.

The surface hierarchy
From the entrance console to the cabinet interior
Rank & surface Typical height Why it sits here If it is what you have
1. Entrance console ★ 75–85 cm Right height, hard top, open above, and beside the door that exchanges the most air in the home Nothing to fix — put a tray under it and use it
2. Sideboard beside a doorway 80–90 cm All the same virtues, inside the room people actually sit in Clear the styling from within an arm's length
3. Open shelf at chest height 110–140 cm Good height and airflow — provided the shelf above is far enough up Move the bottle to the outer end, not the middle
4. Dressing table 75–80 cm Correct height, hard top, but usually crowded and in a low-traffic corner Give it a clear corner of its own, away from the mirror wall
5. Desk or study table 72–76 cm Works because you sit close to it; poor throw into the wider room Back corner, away from your keyboard and any fan
6. Bedside table 55–65 cm Low and enclosed by bedding, but proximity does the work all night Pair it with a soft composition rather than a loud one
7. Coffee table 40–45 cm The most photographed placement and one of the weakest — fragrance sits below seating height Move it to any surface in the room that is 30 cm higher
8. Kitchen counter beside the hob 85–90 cm Right height, wrong neighbour — heat and cooking smells both interfere Move to the far end of the counter, away from the flame
9. Windowsill Varies Sun thins the oil and a breeze carries everything straight out A metre inward from the glass, on any hard surface
10. Inside a display cabinet or closed shelf Varies A sealed box. Holds fragrance beautifully and delivers almost none of it Take it out — no other change will help
The honest caveat: this ranking is about throw alone. There are perfectly good reasons to accept a lower rank — a bedside table is sixth on this list and remains the right place for a sleep fragrance, and a household with a toddler or a cat may have exactly one safe surface. A slightly worse position you can live with beats a better one you cannot. What is not worth accepting is a cabinet interior, because nothing else you do will compensate for it.

Three surfaces, three compositions
The SOSA principle
The best-looking surface in a room and the best-performing one are almost never the same surface.
We style rooms around low tables and closed cabinets, and both are poor placements. Decide which you are optimising for, honestly, and then choose the fragrance to suit.

Part three — working with the furniture you actually have

Very few homes offer a perfect surface, and a ranking is only useful if it tells you what to do when you cannot have the top of it. The good news is that most of the improvements are free rearrangements rather than purchases. If your best available surface is too low, look for anything in the same part of the room that is thirty centimetres higher — the arm of a sideboard, a shelf beside the television, the top of a shoe cabinet by the door. Thirty centimetres of height is worth more than most people would guess, because it lifts the reeds out of the sheltered layer that sits under seating level. If your best surface is an open shelf, move the bottle from the middle of the shelf to the outer end, where two sides are open air instead of one. If your only surface is crowded, take away the two objects closest to the bottle rather than moving the bottle.

Rented flats and small homes deserve a specific note, because they usually have one console and a great deal of built-in storage. In a one-bedroom, the console or shoe cabinet by the front door is very often the single best position for the whole flat: it is beside the door, it is at the right height, and fragrance released there is carried inward every time somebody arrives. If a household is out from morning to evening, the placement that matters is the one that works in the two hours after everybody gets home, which is another argument for the entrance rather than a bedroom corner. And if the flat has only one usable surface but two rooms that matter, that is the honest point to consider a second bottle rather than a bigger one — the total output of a home is raised by adding sources, never by adding volume to a single bottle.

Two boundaries worth stating plainly. The first is that no surface will make a reed diffuser cover a genuinely large connected space; past roughly 250–300 sq ft of open volume you are asking a passive point source to do a machine's job, and a Sukoon at ₹1,899 covering 270–320 sq ft is the honest answer rather than a third bottle. The second is that placement cannot change character. A composition that is too soft for the room you are using it in will be too soft on the best console in India — Evening Calm at 8.9 is built to be quiet, and moving it will not make it Fresh Brew at 9.5. Placement corrects delivery problems. It does not correct choice problems, and the two feel identical from inside the room.

A cabinet keeps fragrance beautifully. That is precisely the problem with it.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — surface and scent, room by room

The last step is matching the composition to the surface's room, because a well-placed bottle in the wrong character is still a disappointment. This is how I would set up a typical three-bedroom flat.

Two good surfaces, one flat Use both — opposite ends, not side by side Shuttling a single bottle between them Warmth & Bloom duo — they meet on warmth ₹1,598 / pair
Honest notes for buyers: strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six fibre reeds, not an industry standard and not a concentration. Placement changes how much of a bottle's output reaches you; it does not change the output itself, and a larger bottle is not a placement fix — 130ml buys 14–18 weeks against 6–8 and projects the same at six reeds. If two compositions share a space, pick two that share a note or you will smell the seam where they meet. Our refills are oil only, ₹2,399 for 300ml and ₹3,499 for 500ml — you reuse your own vessel and reeds; reeds are not sold separately, and we suggest refreshing them every few months. Reed oil never goes into a Boond, Sukoon or Megh, and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Stand every bottle on a tray, flip with gloves, keep out of direct sunlight, and keep away from children and pets. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

When the flat has two good surfaces
SOSA Warmth & Bloom duo · Fresh Brew + Garden Bloom ₹1,598 / 2 × 50ml
The commonest layout in an Indian flat gives you one strong surface at the entrance and one in the living room, several metres apart. This pairs a bottle for each. Fresh Brew brings Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla at 9.5 on our scale; Garden Bloom brings British rose and night-blooming jasmine at 8.9. They meet on warmth and a soft musk, which is why they can share a connected space without producing a seam where the two meet. 2 × 130ml ₹2,598.

A note from Sonal

When we photograph these bottles they go on a low table with a book and a bowl of something, because that is what looks composed in a frame. I am aware that I am photographing one of the weaker placements in this article, and it is a small tension I have not resolved. A styled coffee table is beautiful and it puts the reeds below the height at which a seated person breathes.

So take the photographs as pictures of the object and this page as instructions for the fragrance. If you want the room to smell of what I composed, the console by your front door will do more for it than any styling decision you make. If you want the bottle to look right on the coffee table, that is a legitimate choice too — just choose a composition high enough on the scale to survive it, and flip it faithfully.

The one rule I would ask you not to bend is the tray. I have replaced a marble top and heard from customers who have replaced worse, and none of it needed to happen. Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best place to put a reed diffuser for strong throw?
A hard surface at waist-to-chest height beside a doorway, open above, with an arm's length of clear space around the reeds, out of direct sun and away from AC vents and fans. In most Indian homes that is the entrance console or a sideboard next to the living-room door.
Is it bad to keep a reed diffuser in a display cabinet?
Yes, and it is the worst placement on the list. A closed cabinet is a sealed box: the fragrance is released into a small volume of still air and stays there, so the room receives almost nothing while the bottle empties at close to its usual rate. Nothing else you change will compensate. Take it out.
Why does a coffee table not work well?
Height. At 40–45 cm the reeds sit below the level at which seated people breathe, and fragrance tends to stay in the sheltered air beneath and around the furniture. It is the most photographed placement in the category and one of the weakest. Any surface in the same room thirty centimetres higher will read stronger immediately.
Do I really need a tray under it?
Yes. Reed oil marks wood and stone, and it does not need to be spilled — oil creeps slowly down the outside of the glass over weeks, more so at higher reed counts. A ceramic or glass coaster costs nothing and protects a surface you probably care about. Flip with gloves for the same reason.
Can better placement fix a fragrance that is too mild?
Placement fixes delivery, not character. If Evening Calm at 8.9 is too soft for your living room, it will be too soft on the best console in the house. Move up the scale to Fresh Brew at 9.5 or Mountain Breeze at 9.4, both ₹849, or add reeds and accept fewer weeks.
