Does an active diffuser use more fragrance oil than a reed?
It uses it differently, and how much depends entirely on the machine, the setting and how many hours a day you run it, which is why we do not publish a single number that would be wrong for most homes. What we can say honestly is the shape of it. A reed diffuser is always on, quietly, and empties over roughly six to ten weeks whether you are in the room or not. An active diffuser can be run only when a room is being used, which is often a few hours a day rather than twenty-four, and at a level you choose rather than the maximum the room allows. Many people find that scheduling and a low setting mean they are not spending more, only spending it during the hours they are actually there to enjoy. Is heat a kind of energy I should consider?
Warmth is technically a way of speeding evaporation, and it is why your bathroom performs so well after a shower and why a reed near a sunny window empties faster. But it is not a control system - it changes the rate without giving you any of the four things that make an active diffuser useful, because you cannot schedule the weather or set the afternoon to a level. It also changes how a fragrance smells, since the lighter top notes lift away faster when they are warmed, so a blend can read differently hot than it does cool. Every SOSA active diffuser works by cold diffusion rather than heat, which keeps the blend closer to how it was composed. The practical version of this answer is simple: do not try to solve distribution with warmth, and do keep any fragrance product away from anything hot, and absolutely never near a lit candle.
Is a noisy diffuser a sign it is working harder?
No, and it is worth separating the two. Noise comes from how a machine moves things - the small pump or fan in a unit, or the vibration and bubbling in an ultrasonic with water in it - and it tells you almost nothing about how much fragrance is reaching the far side of the room. A quiet machine set to a strong level will out-perform a noisy one set low. What noise does affect is whether you can live with it, and that is a genuine buying consideration for a bedroom. If silence matters more than anything else to you, the honest answer may be that a reed diffuser at the bedside from Rs 749 is still the right product and you should fix placement rather than add a machine. Can I put my reed diffuser oil into an ultrasonic?
Please do not. They are formulated for two completely different jobs and the categories do not cross. Reed diffuser oil is made to travel up a porous stick by capillary action and evaporate from its surface, which needs a particular viscosity and carrier. The Hotel Collection at Rs 299 for 15ml is water-based and made specifically to be dispersed by an ultrasonic in a tank of water, in the Boond at Rs 899, the Sukoon at Rs 1,899 or the Megh at Rs 3,499. Putting reed oil into a water tank will not disperse properly and is not something we would ever suggest. In the other direction, the Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each ships with its own hotel-inspired blends, and the Rs 299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. Match the fragrance format to the machine and everything behaves.
If active diffusion is better, why does SOSA still sell reed diffusers?
Because active is not better, it is different, and a great many rooms are genuinely best served by a passive one. A reed diffuser needs no power, makes no sound, has nothing to switch on and nothing to fail, adds no humidity and leaves no residue, and it gives lovely ambience beside where it stands for about six to ten weeks. For a guest bathroom, a study, a bedside table, a small entrance console or a puja room, that is exactly the right product and adding a machine would be over-engineering a corner. What a reed cannot do is fill a volume evenly, because nothing carries its fragrance outward. So the honest position is that the reed is the correct answer to one question and an active diffuser is the correct answer to another, and the only mistake is asking a product to answer the question it was never built for.
