Twenty years abroad and a house built by video call is a specific situation, and it has a specific gap in it. Every layer of that house was chosen from photographs - the stone from a sample shot, the joinery from a video walkthrough, the light fittings from a catalogue link sent at midnight. All of that can be inspected at a distance, argued over and corrected. There is one layer that cannot be photographed, could never be checked on a call, and was therefore never specified at all.
SOSA Vaayu waterless cold-air scent machine, Rs 11,999
SOSA Vaayu · scheduled 1 / 4 / 8 / 24 hours · app and buttons ₹11,999 →
The answer for an open-centred house whose every other layer was chosen from photographs. SOSA Vaayu, ₹11,999 - waterless cold-air diffusion giving a dry residue-free mist, published for up to 1000 m3, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air, a 400ml tank, Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, 1, 4, 8 or 24-hour run windows on chosen days, under 38 dB, and four 100 ml fragrances in the box.
Quick answers — read this first
What is a good housewarming gift for relatives moving back to India after many years abroad? Something that answers what could not be decided remotely. A house supervised from abroad is known from drawings and photographs, and scent is the one layer that neither medium carries. SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is a waterless cold-air machine published for up to 1000 m3, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air, with run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours on chosen days.

They will occupy the house in stages over a few months. Does that matter? It is the reason scheduling is worth having. The published control is a Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, with windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, plus auto-stop and a key-lock. A house being occupied room by room over weeks can be run on short windows rather than continuously, and the buttons mean nobody has to be on an app to change it.

Will a fragrance machine deal with a newly finished house that smells of paint? No, and this is worth saying before the gift is bought. Fragrance adds a scent to a space. It does not remove, neutralise or purify one, and it does not clean the air. A recently completed house that still carries paint or polish needs ventilation and time. The dry residue-free mist Vaayu produces is a statement about residue on surfaces, not about air quality.
The short answer
Short answer: Give the layer that could not be specified from abroad. A house built by video call is known from drawings and photographs, and neither carries scent, so nobody chose it. SOSA Vaayu is Rs 11,999 for up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air, runs under 38 dB on 1, 4, 8 or 24-hour windows, and comes in the box with four 100 ml fragrances. Reed diffusers from Rs 749 suit rooms that close off.
The pick: A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 if the main floor is one connected volume, with reed diffusers from ₹749 for the bedrooms and study that close off.
Why: It answers the one layer that no drawing, photograph or video call could convey, it needs no position in a scheme already settled, and it can be scheduled around a house being occupied in stages.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
My relatives are moving back to India after twenty years abroad, into a house they built from a distance. What acknowledges that transition?
Be precise about what is unusual here, because it points straight at the answer. They know this house extremely well and have never been inside it. Twenty years of decisions made from another country means the plan, the elevations, the stone, the joinery and the fittings were all chosen through a screen, and a screen carries geometry, colour and finish very capably. What it does not carry is what it is like to stand in the hall. Of the layers that make that up, most were still decided by somebody - an architect resolved the volume, a designer resolved the surfaces, a lighting consultant resolved the evening. Scent had nobody, because no house has a scent drawing and nothing on a video call would have prompted the question. So it is the one layer still genuinely open, and adding to it cannot read as a correction of anybody's work. SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is that layer as a machine: waterless cold-air diffusion producing a dry residue-free mist with no water and no heat, published for up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, with a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours with day scheduling and adjustable intensity, under 38 dB, DC 12V / 1A at 5W, 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, CE, RoHS and SGS marked, made in India, and supplied with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances of 100 ml each. Two honest limits. A coverage figure assumes one connected body of air, so it suits an open main floor rather than a plan of closed doors, where reed diffusers from ₹749 are the better answer, passive and working about 6 to 10 weeks. And a recently finished house that still smells of paint or polish needs ventilation and time: fragrance adds a scent, it does not remove, neutralise or purify one. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
They have seen every wall of this house in photographs. They have never once been in the air of it, and no video call in twenty years could have told them anything about that.
For the first weeks in the house: Vaayu at ₹11,999 - up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air, under 38 dB, run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours on chosen days, complete in the box.

What a house built at a distance still has missing on the day they land

Three things are specific to a house built at a distance, and the third is the one most gift guides get wrong.

1
The remote specification
What a screen could not carry
A house supervised from another country is a house specified through images. That is a far better process than it sounds - stone samples photographed against a ruler, joinery shot from four angles, a site engineer walking a phone camera through a shell every Sunday - and it settles almost everything.

What it settles are the properties an image carries: geometry, colour, finish, proportion, the way a room takes light at eleven in the morning. Those are exactly the things a designer and an architect are retained to resolve, and they were resolved.

Scent is not in that list and could not be. No photograph carries it, no drawing has a layer for it, and nobody on a weekly call was ever going to raise it, because it is not a construction question. So in this specific case the usual argument for this category is sharper than normal: it is not simply that nobody was hired to decide the scent of the house, it is that the whole method of building it made the question invisible.

That gives a gift-giver something rare. You are not adding to a set of decisions somebody laboured over. You are adding the one thing the method itself could not reach, which is why it cannot read as a comment on anybody else's work.
Tip: Everything that photographs well was decided. The gap is the part that does not photograph.
2
The building
Is the main floor one connected volume?
Houses built for a return from abroad are often planned open at the centre - a double-height entrance, living running into dining, a stairwell above - partly because that is what twenty years of living elsewhere tends to favour. That shape matters here, because it is exactly the shape the published figure describes.

Vaayu publishes up to 1000 m3, stated on the product page as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. Read the condition strictly: a rating of that kind assumes one connected body of air. Where the centre of the house is continuous, that is the case it was written for, and the cubic figure is the more useful of the two because a double-height space adds volume a floor-area number hides.

Where the plan is instead a corridor with doors off it, the figure does not transfer, and the honest answer is reed diffusers from ₹749 or a duo set from ₹1,498 in the rooms that are being used first. Those are passive, about 6 to 10 weeks, and need nothing from a household still living out of suitcases.

Nothing is published about what a second machine adds, so a connected volume beyond that band is a question for WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 rather than a calculation anybody should attempt here.
3
The first months
A new build, an irregular household, and what fragrance does not do
Start with the thing most gift guides get wrong. A house finished recently often still carries paint, polish, adhesive or new joinery. Fragrance does not deal with that. It adds a scent; it does not remove, neutralise or purify one, and it does not clean the air. What a new build needs there is ventilation and time, and anybody buying a machine as a solution to it will be disappointed. Vaayu's dry, residue-free mist is a statement about residue on surfaces, not about air quality. Say that plainly when you give it.

Then the part that genuinely suits this household. A family moving back occupies a house in stages - two rooms first, the rest over weeks, trips back and forth while things are shipped and sorted. Vaayu is controlled by a Bluetooth app or the buttons on the unit, with run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, plus auto-stop and a key-lock. Short windows on the days the house is full, nothing on the days it is not, and the buttons mean the app is not the only route in.

It arrives complete, with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, which matters for a household that has not yet found a local shop for anything. Afterwards, SOSA waterless nebuliser refills are ₹1,049 for 100 gm and ₹1,849 for 300 gm. On the 400ml tank the page states two different figures - about 75 days in its specification data and 90 or more in its body copy - so ask rather than plan. There is no installation service, no warranty period and no running-cost figure published.
Tip: A new build wants ventilation and time. A gift of fragrance is for afterwards, and it is honest to say so.
SOSA Vaayu, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted
Read the number strictly, not generously
About 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - of air that is actually connected
Vaayu publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing in home fragrance does: up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. The caveat matters more than the number. A rating assumes one connected body of air. A ground floor that runs living into dining into a stairwell is one volume and is exactly what the figure describes. A bungalow of the same total area with six closed doors is not one volume, it is six rooms, and the figure does not transfer. Work out how much of the house is genuinely open before you work out anything else - and note that no guidance is published on what a second unit adds.
See SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 →
Work it out in this order
How to choose this in ten minutes before they land
  1. Ask what was chosen from photographs. Everything visible was. Scent was not.
  2. A newly finished house wants ventilation and time first, not fragrance.
  3. Check whether the centre of the house is continuous with no doors between.
  4. Short run windows on chosen days suit a house being occupied in stages.
The SOSA principle
A house built from abroad is specified entirely through images, and images carry geometry, colour and finish. Scent is the one layer the method could not reach, which is why it is still open twenty years later and why adding to it comments on nobody's work.
That is a sharper version of the argument for this category than any ordinary housewarming makes, and it is worth understanding before comparing two products on price.

The three sets, what comes in the box, and what it runs on

Three published four-scent sets, all at the same ₹11,999, so the decision is taste rather than budget. They pair Ritz-Carlton with Westin, St. Regis and 1 Hotels inspirations; Westin with Shangri-La, Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton; and St. Regis with W Hotels, 1 Hotels and Four Seasons. State clearly what they are: SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations, composed by SOSA, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. There is a real question here about register. A household that has spent twenty years in hotels and airports on the way home may want the house to read as anything but a lobby, and four 100 ml bottles let them decide that in the first month rather than committing to one note chosen by somebody else. If none of the four suits, the waterless nebuliser oils at ₹1,049 for 100 gm are a small correction. SOSA also composes bespoke blends, with no price, minimum or process published, so that is a WhatsApp conversation.

The SOSA gift edit
Four ways to mark a return, and where each one falls short
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
SOSA Vaayu · ₹11,999 Up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air, under 38 dB, run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours on chosen days from the app or the onboard buttons, complete in the box with four 100 ml fragrances. It fails in a plan of closed doors, and it is the wrong purchase for anybody expecting it to deal with a new-build smell.
Reed diffusers · ₹749 to ₹1,349 Passive, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in, and ideal for the two or three rooms occupied first while the rest of the house fills up. It fails in a large continuous hall, where a passive bottle works over the air immediately around it and no further.
SOSA Safar · ₹3,999 to ₹4,499 Cordless and portable, and it goes with a person into a car or a hotel room rather than scenting a property. Genuinely useful for a household still travelling between two places. It is imported rather than made in India, and it does not answer the question this page is about.
A large household appliance · any price The instinct when somebody is setting up a home from nothing, and often already handled, because a family returning after twenty years has usually planned the fitted equipment in detail from abroad. It fails on duplication more often than on taste, and it is the hardest thing on this list to return.
SOSA Vaayu ships with four Hotel Collection fragrances
The two details that matter in a finished house
Under 38 dB, and it runs only when you tell it to
Two published details decide whether this belongs in a house somebody spent years on. It runs under 38 dB, which is the answer to the reasonable worry about a machine humming in a double-height living room. And it is scheduled: Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, with auto-stop and a key-lock. That is what makes it workable in a house occupied for part of the year, or a room used only when people come over. It is 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, and it ships with four 100 ml fragrances - so it is complete on the day it arrives.

Where the rest of the range sits, since a large new house tempts people upward. SOSA Meenar at ₹38,500 is published for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft and is a commercial machine for hotels, showrooms and corporate floors; in a house it is a mismatch rather than a more generous gift. The ultrasonic machines - Boond at ₹899, Sukoon at ₹1,899 and Megh at ₹5,999 - are water-based and suit a single room, and they need water added regularly, which is a poor thing to hand a household in the middle of unpacking. Attars from ₹379 are worn rather than placed, and a single reed diffuser at ₹749 in 50 ml is the easiest small gift to bring on the first visit. Candles from ₹399 need a flame and somebody to light them, and SOSA publishes no burn figure for them.

The number this whole decision turns on, and where it stops being true
Up to 1000 m3 - about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - of connected air
SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing else in home fragrance does: up to 1000 m3, stated on the product page as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. It is a waterless cold-air machine producing a dry, residue-free mist with no water and no heat, running under 38 dB on DC 12V / 1A at 5W, with a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app and onboard button control, run windows of 1h, 4h, 8h or 24h, day scheduling and adjustable intensity, plus auto-stop and a key-lock. It is 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, in black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, CE, RoHS and SGS marked, and its country of origin is India. But a coverage rating assumes one connected body of air. That figure describes an open-plan living-dining floor, a duplex's main level, a double-height hall - the kind of volume a small passive bottle cannot reach. It does not describe a bungalow with every internal door closed, because that is not one volume; it is six. Above about 3,000 sq ft of genuinely connected space, or across separated wings, the honest answer is a conversation rather than a number, because no multi-unit guidance is published. SOSA Meenar at ₹38,500 is published for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft and is a commercial machine rather than a house gift.

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every reed diffuser gift, and the first one is not price. How big is the room it is going into? A 50ml suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a first diffuser; a 130ml suits an open-plan living and dining area, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom. Then: how much do you actually know about their taste? The less you know, the less declarative the scent should be - Morning Freshness is the safest of the five for a home you have never stood in, and Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla is the strongest opinion in the range. Price follows those two answers rather than leading them.

A coverage rating assumes one connected body of air. Vaayu's figure describes an open-plan volume - a living-dining floor, a duplex's main level, a double-height hall. A house with every internal door shut is not one volume, and the figure does not transfer to it. Every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, and its country of origin is India. Fragrance adds a scent to a space; it does not remove, neutralise or purify one, and the dry residue-free mist is a statement about residue rather than about air quality. The honest spec sheet
What the Vaayu page publishes, and what it does not
Everything below is on the live product page. Anything not on this list is not something a page like this should state.
  • Coverage - up to 1000 m3, published as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so it describes an open-plan floor rather than a house of closed rooms.
  • The machine - waterless cold-air diffusion, dry and residue-free, no water and no heat. 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm, 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted. DC 12V / 1A, 5W. Under 38 dB. Auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS. Country of origin India.
  • Control - a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, run windows of 1h, 4h, 8h or 24h, day scheduling and adjustable intensity. This is what makes it workable in a house that is empty for stretches, or a room used only at weekends.
  • In the box - every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, in one of three published four-scent sets, all at ₹11,999. SOSA blends described as hotel-inspired are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
  • The fragrance - alcohol-free, water-free oils formulated for cold-air diffusion. SOSA waterless nebuliser refills are ₹1,049 for 100 gm and ₹1,849 for 300 gm and are published for Vaayu and Safar. The water-based ultrasonic bottles belong to a different kind of machine.
  • Not published, and therefore never stated here: how long a 400ml fill lasts as a single figure - the page says about 75 days in one place and 90 or more in another; what a second unit adds; any warranty period, service interval or filter; any installation service; any app name, phone compatibility or Bluetooth range; and any running or electricity cost. Those go to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

A note from Sonal

The messages I find hardest to answer are the ones that begin with an apology. They have just finished building the house. I don't want to sound cheap, but I also can't buy them anything that matters at that scale. And underneath it is a real anxiety: that after years of drawings and delays and site visits, whatever you turn up with will look like a token.

What I would say is that the anxiety is aimed at the wrong thing. You are not competing with the house. Nobody is. The people who built it spent two years choosing between four shades of the same stone, and there is no object you can hand over that will register on that scale. Trying is how people end up buying a vase that gets moved to a spare room.

The reason I keep coming back to scent for these particular houses is unromantic. It is the last layer, and it is the only one nobody planned. An architect resolves the volume, a designer resolves the surfaces, a lighting consultant resolves the evening, and then everybody stops - because scent is not on anybody's drawing. So it is one of the few things left that adds to a finished house without arguing with a single decision already made in it.

The part I would be careful about is the number. Vaayu publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing in home fragrance does, and I would rather you read it strictly than generously. About 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, of air that is actually connected. A ground floor that opens living into dining into a stairwell is that. A bungalow with six closed doors is not that, whatever its total square footage says on paper, and a page that blurs the two is doing you no favours.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good housewarming gift for a family returning to India after many years?
Something that answers what could not be chosen at a distance. A house supervised from abroad is specified through photographs and video, and those carry geometry, colour and finish but not scent, so nobody decided it. That makes fragrance the one layer still genuinely open, and adding to it does not comment on any decision already taken.
Will a fragrance machine deal with a new-construction smell?
No. Fragrance adds a scent to a space; it does not remove, neutralise, mask or purify anything, and it does not clean the air. A house finished recently that still carries paint, polish or adhesive needs ventilation and time. The dry, residue-free mist Vaayu produces is a statement about residue on surfaces, not about air quality.
The house will be occupied in stages. Can it be scheduled around that?
Yes. The published control is a Bluetooth app together with onboard buttons, with run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, plus an auto-stop and a key-lock. So it can run short windows on the days the house is full and nothing on the days it is empty, and the settings can be changed on the unit without a phone.
How much of a large new house will one unit handle?
The published figure is up to 1000 cubic metres, stated as approximately 2,000 to 3,000 square feet, and it assumes one connected body of air. An open centre with living running into dining and a stairwell above is that case. A plan of closed doors is not, and no guidance is published on what a second unit would add, so ask SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
How often does the tank need filling?
The tank is 400 ml and refillable. The product page states its life two different ways - about 75 days in its specification data and 90 or more days in its body copy - and either figure depends on the intensity setting and the scheduled hours. Ask SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 rather than planning around a single number.

About the coverage figure: a rating assumes one connected body of air. The published figure describes an open-plan volume such as a living-dining floor, a duplex's main level or a double-height hall, and does not describe a property whose rooms are separated by closed doors, whatever its total floor area. No guidance is published on what a second unit adds. About tank life: the Vaayu product page states the life of one 400 ml fill in two different ways - approximately 75 days in its specification and FAQ data, and 90 or more days in its body copy - and in either case it depends on the intensity setting and the scheduled hours, so no single figure is stated on this page. What is not published, and is therefore not stated here: any warranty period, service interval or filter; any installation service; any app name, phone compatibility or Bluetooth range; any running or electricity cost; and any multi-unit coverage. Limits of this guide: fragrance adds a scent to a space. It does not remove, neutralise, mask or purify odour, it does not clean the air, and no SOSA product makes any health, antibacterial or air-purifying claim; a dry residue-free mist is a statement about residue and not about air quality. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep or wellbeing, nor about how any recipient or guest will feel, nor about what a gift does for any business result. No page here characterises any recipient's wealth or describes people who own particular kinds of property; where a property value appears it is the figure the reader themselves supplied as context. SOSA blends described as hotel-inspired are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. SOSA Home & Body is an Indian fragrance house based in Pune, Maharashtra, sending orders across India, with no shop, showroom, stockist, counter or warehouse in any other city.
