Founder Diaries · Thinking-of-You & Cheer-Up Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
You have narrowed it to two products and the tie-breaker you are missing is not scent - it is that these two things behave completely differently once they arrive, and one of them costs nearly twice the other. A candle asks one action and ends; a reed asks nothing and keeps going for weeks. That difference, plus the gap between ₹399 and ₹749, decides almost every version of this. Here is the verdict in each case, and the case where you should buy neither.
SOSA Cozy Corner scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
SOSA Cozy Corner candle · ₹399, about 15 to 18 hours ₹399 →
The SOSA Cozy Corner candle, ₹399 - about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. It leads this page because it wins the general case: one action, a real week of evenings, an ending, and a price that keeps the parcel a gesture rather than a decision about somebody.
Quick answers — read this first
Which is better as a cheer-up gift, a candle or a reed diffuser? A candle at ₹399 wins the general case, because it is small enough to be received without ceremony and it gets used up. A reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 wins where a flame is not possible, where the person has no spare attention at all, or where you want the gift to still be working in six weeks.

How do the durations compare? Not on the same scale at all. A ₹399 candle is about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, so five evenings at roughly three hours each, and a ₹699 duo is about 30 to 36 hours. A 50ml reed runs about 6 to 10 weeks continuously. The candle gives concentrated use; the reed gives elapsed time.

Does the price difference matter here? Yes, and it is part of the argument rather than a footnote. ₹749 is nearly double ₹399, and in some friendships that is the line where a small gesture turns into something the person feels they have to respond to. If you are unsure which side of that line you are on, the ₹399 answer is the safe one.
The short answer
Short answer: Candle at Rs 399 for the general case: one action, about 15 to 18 hours, small enough to be received without ceremony. Reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 where a flame is not allowed, where the person has nothing spare to give a new object, or where you want it still working in six weeks.
The pick: The candle at ₹399 in most cases, and the 50ml reed at ₹749 in three specific ones.
Why: The candle is the cheaper, smaller and more obviously casual gesture; the reed buys freedom from a flame and about 6 to 10 weeks of not being remembered.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
Should I send a reed diffuser or a candle as a cheer-up gift?
Send the candle at ₹399 unless one of three things is true. It is the better default because of what it costs and how it behaves: about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, one action to use it, and an ending, so nobody is committed to anything. At ₹399 it also stays unmistakably a gesture rather than an event, which is what you want when there is no occasion attached. Switch to a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 if the room cannot take a flame - a hostel, a shared flat, a rented place with a rule - if the person has so little spare attention that even one action is one too many, or if you specifically want the gift to still be doing something in six weeks, since a reed runs about 6 to 10. Be clear-eyed about the price gap in that decision. ₹749 is nearly twice ₹399, and there are friendships where the larger number turns a light gesture into something the person feels obliged to answer. Neither product changes how anybody's week went; a scent is a scent, and this page is not advice about anybody's health. A parcel sits alongside a phone call and never instead of it, and where somebody is dealing with more than a hard week the person who helps may need to be a professional. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Candle: one action, about 15 to 18 hours, ₹399, and an ending. Reed: no actions, about 6 to 10 weeks, ₹749. Everything else about this decision follows from those two lines.
The verdict in one line: candle at ₹399 by default, reed at ₹749 when a flame is out or when one action is one too many.
SOSA candles from ₹399

The three things that separate them, and the verdict on each

These two get compared on scent, which is the least useful axis because both come in scents people like. The three axes that actually decide it are effort, duration and price, and they do not all point the same way.

1
The first axis
Effort: one action versus none
A candle asks a person to light it. That is the entire demand, and for most people most of the time it is nothing. But it is not zero, and on a week when somebody is running on empty, the difference between one action and no actions is larger than it looks on paper. A reed diffuser is put on a surface and then it simply works: no flame, no socket, no switch, nothing to remember and nothing that can be forgotten.

The verdict on this axis goes to the reed, but with a qualification worth stating. One action is also what makes a candle feel like a gift rather than furniture - the person chooses to light it, and that choice is a small moment of their own. A reed is invisible after the first week. If you want the object to be noticed, the candle wins the same axis for the opposite reason.

Verdict: reed where the person has nothing spare; candle where you want the gift to be noticed rather than absorbed.
Tip: One action is nothing, until you are sending to somebody who has nothing spare.
2
The second axis
Duration: concentrated hours versus elapsed weeks
These two do not measure the same thing, which is why the comparison is usually done badly. A ₹399 candle is about 15 to 18 hours of burn time - concentrated use, entirely under the recipient's control, and at roughly three hours across five evenings that is a working week of evenings. The ₹699 duo is about 30 to 36 hours and stretches into a second and third week at the same rate. Then it is over, and the ending is a feature: nothing has to be kept.

A 50ml reed runs about 6 to 10 weeks of elapsed time whether anybody engages with it or not. That is much longer on the calendar and much less concentrated in experience. It also means a scent choice you made is in somebody's room for two months, which is fine if it is their own room and less fine in a shared flat.

Verdict: reed if you want the gift present over a long stretch; candle if you want it used, noticed and finished.
3
The third axis
Price: ₹399 against ₹749, and what the number says
A candle is ₹399, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo, and the Woodenwick range is ₹999. A 50ml reed is ₹749 for Morning Freshness, ₹799 for Garden Bloom and Evening Calm, and ₹849 for Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew; the 130ml sits at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 and the duo sets start at ₹1,498. So the entry gap is ₹399 against ₹749 - nearly double.

That number is not just a budget question, it is part of what the gift communicates. Sent with no occasion attached, a larger parcel asks the person to work out what you meant by it, and somebody having a hard week has very little appetite for working things out. ₹399 reads as I saw this and thought of you. ₹749 starts to read as I made a decision about you, which is fine between close friends and heavy between colleagues.

Verdict: candle wherever you are unsure how close the friendship is. Price ties go to the smaller object here, always.
Tip: When you cannot tell how close the friendship is, the cheaper gift is the more accurate one.
SOSA Cozy Corner scented candle, Rs 399
The smallest thing that still reads as a gift
A candle at ₹399 asks nothing of the person receiving it
Hand-poured in small batches. Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks are ₹399 each at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, and ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. The Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are ₹999. A candle is a scent and an object to light - it is not a treatment and it will not change how a week went.
See the SOSA candles →
Work it out in this order
Settle it with these four checks
  1. Can a flame happen in that room? If not, the answer is the reed, at Rs 749.
  2. Is one action one too many for them right now? If yes, the reed.
  3. Do you want it noticed and finished, or present for weeks? Candle, then reed.
  4. Unsure how close the friendship is? Send the Rs 399 candle.
The SOSA principle
The honest difference is not scent and it is not quality. It is that a candle ends and a reed does not, and that one of them costs nearly twice the other.
An ending is underrated in a gift sent to somebody who is already keeping track of too many things.

Prices, durations and the sizes worth buying

The numbers side by side. Candles: Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks are ₹399 each at about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours; the Woodenwick range in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla is ₹999 and the Bubble Candles are ₹499 unscented and ₹599 scented. Reeds: Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint at ₹749, Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine at ₹799, Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile at ₹799, Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar at ₹849 and Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla at ₹849, all in 50ml at about 6 to 10 weeks, with 130ml from ₹1,249. Note which figures exist: burn hours are published for the ₹399 candle range only, so do not assume them elsewhere.

The SOSA gift edit
The head-to-head, case by case
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
General cheer-up gift · candle, ₹399 The verdict in the default case. Small enough to be received without ceremony, specific enough to read as chosen, about 15 to 18 hours of use, and then gone. It also needs no knowledge of the person's taste in worn fragrance. The reed loses here on price alone: ₹749 is a different kind of parcel to receive with no occasion attached.
Hostel, shared flat or no flame · reed, ₹749 Not really a contest. Where an open flame is not allowed the candle is simply unusable, and a 50ml reed works for about 6 to 10 weeks with nothing to light. The alternative is wax melts with an electric burner, though melts at ₹499 need a burner to exist as a gift at all, at ₹599 for the ceramic one.
Somebody with nothing spare · reed, ₹749 to ₹849 When even one action is one too many, the reed wins on the only axis that matters: it needs nothing. No flame, no socket, nothing to switch off, nothing to remember. Send the 50ml rather than the ₹1,249 130ml, and send it only into a room the person actually controls for the next two months.
Neither, this week · ₹0 The case worth keeping on the table. If you are choosing between a parcel and a phone call, the call is the one that does something, and a gift belongs alongside showing up rather than in place of it. Where somebody is dealing with more than a difficult week, what is needed is a person, and sometimes that person is a professional.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
The gift that asks for nothing at all
A reed diffuser needs no flame, no socket and nothing remembered
Five scents in 50ml from ₹749 and 130ml from ₹1,249, running about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint, Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine, Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar, Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee and vanilla. Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile - that is the name on the bottle and a description of what it smells of, not a claim about what it does.
See the reed diffusers →

Two size notes that follow from the verdict. On the candle side, buy the ₹399 single before the ₹699 duo - the duo is the better product and the worse gesture, because doubling the parcel doubles the question the person has to answer about it. On the reed side, buy the 50ml at ₹749 to ₹849 and leave the 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 for a genuinely large open room and a genuine occasion. The duo gift sets from ₹1,498 are out of scope entirely for something sent because you were thinking of somebody.

When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

A candle ends and a reed does not. That sounds like a point against the candle, and for a gift sent with no occasion behind it, it is the strongest thing on its side.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.

What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.

So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a candle or a reed diffuser better value?
They are not comparable on value because they measure different things. A Rs 399 candle is about 15 to 18 hours of concentrated use. A Rs 749 reed is about 6 to 10 weeks of elapsed time whether anybody engages with it or not. Buy on which behaviour suits the person, not on a cost-per-hour calculation.
Which is safer to send to someone I do not know that well?
The candle at Rs 399. It is cheaper, smaller and unmistakably a gesture rather than a statement, and neither product requires you to know what they wear. A Rs 749 reed sent to a colleague or a distant friend can land as a bigger decision than you intended to make.
Can I send both?
You can, but for a gift with no occasion it is usually the wrong move. Two objects arriving together read as an occasion, and a person having a hard week then has to work out what you meant by it. If you want to spend more, buy the Rs 699 candle duo rather than two different product types.
When should I send neither?
When the real choice is between buying something and ringing them, and when the difficulty is bigger than a hard week. A parcel is a way of saying you were thinking about somebody. It is not help, it does not change anything that happened, and it should never take the place of turning up or of a professional where one is needed.
Do candles and reed diffusers smell the same strength?
SOSA publishes no strength or coverage figure for either, so nobody should claim one. What is published is duration: about 15 to 18 hours for a Rs 399 candle, about 30 to 36 for the Rs 699 duo, and about 6 to 10 weeks for a 50ml reed. Buy on those numbers and on the scent notes, not on assumed intensity.

No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep, comfort or wellbeing: fragrance is a scent, not a treatment, and where a product name contains a word such as Calm that is a name and not an effect. Where this guide covers sending something to a person having a difficult time, it treats a gift as a gesture of attention alongside real support and never as a substitute for a person or for professional help, and it gives no mental-health advice. No delivery date, dispatch time, order cut-off, discount or minimum order quantity is stated anywhere on this page; corporate and bulk enquiries are answered on WhatsApp. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand; the SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions and are not the designer fragrances they are described as being inspired by. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
