Founder Diaries · Reed Diffuser & Home Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles9 min readUpdated September 2026
Both are alcohol-free, both are made by the same house, and they sit at opposite ends of the same shelf. An attar from ₹379 is 3ml of concentrated oil worn on skin. A reed diffuser from ₹749 is a bottle of reed oil that scents a room and ends in about 6 to 10 weeks. The choice between them is not about money at all - it is about how much you know and how close you are, and those are two separate questions with two separate answers.
The worn gift that stays in register. SOSA Attar Trio, ₹1,055 for the 3ml set, ₹1,859 for 6ml and ₹3,189 for 12ml - three alcohol-free oils in one box, which reads as a selection to try rather than a verdict on how somebody should smell. When even that is too close, a reed diffuser from ₹749 goes to the room instead.
Quick answers — read this first
Should I gift an attar or a reed diffuser? Ask two things. Can you name a fragrance they already wear? If yes, an attar from ₹379 is the more accurate gift. If no, a reed diffuser from ₹749 is the safer one, because it goes to a room rather than onto a person. Then ask how close you are - an attar is a closer gift.
Is an attar an appropriate gift for a boss or a client? A single attar chosen for somebody's skin is a close gift and sits wrong in a working relationship. The Attar Trio at ₹1,055 reads differently because it is a boxed set of three rather than one verdict on how they should smell, and a reed diffuser is impersonal by design, which is exactly why it works at work.
What do they cost? Attars are ₹379 to ₹399 for 3ml, ₹669 to ₹699 for 6ml and ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 for 12ml, with the Attar Trio from ₹1,055. Reed diffusers are ₹749 to ₹849 in 50ml and ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 in 130ml, with duo gift sets from ₹1,498.
The short answer
Short answer: Choose the attar when you can name what they already wear and you are close enough that a gift for their skin is not presumptuous. Choose the reed diffuser when you cannot, or when the relationship is professional. Attars start at Rs 379 for 3ml; reed diffusers at Rs 749 for 50ml.
The pick: A 3ml attar from ₹379 for somebody close whose taste you know; a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 for everybody else.
Why: One is worn on a person and needs you to be right about them. The other goes into a room, which has no signature scent it is loyal to, so the taste question never arises.
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Reed diffuser or attar - which is the better fragrance gift?
It depends on two things, and neither of them is your budget. The first is knowledge. An attar is worn, so it is a taste decision, and a taste decision is only a good idea when you can finish the sentence she usually wears something with.... If you can, an attar is the more precise gift and it starts at ₹379 for 3ml, well below any reed. If you cannot, a reed diffuser from ₹749 removes the guess entirely, because you are choosing for a room rather than for a person. The second is register. An attar is a close gift - you are choosing something that will sit on somebody's skin, which is fine for a sister, a partner or an old friend and awkward for a client, a boss or a colleague you have worked with for three months. A reed diffuser is appropriate at work precisely because it is impersonal, and the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 is the one worn gift that survives a professional setting, because three bottles in a box read as a selection rather than as a verdict. Do not buy an attar for somebody whose fragrance you have never once noticed, and do not buy a reed for somebody whose signature bottle you could recite. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
An attar is a sentence about the person. A reed diffuser is a sentence about their house. Only one of those needs you to know them well.
Two prices to hold in mind: an attar at ₹379 for 3ml, worn; a reed diffuser at ₹749 for 50ml, for a room and about 6 to 10 weeks of it.
The two questions that settle attar or reed diffuser
These two products get compared on price and that is the least useful axis available, because they are not doing the same job. One goes on a body and one goes into a room, and the three sections below work through knowledge, register and format in that order - which is also the order in which they should decide your answer.
1
The first question
Can you name what they already wear?
This is the whole attar decision and it takes ten seconds. Say out loud what the person already wears - the bottle, the family, anything. If a description comes out, an attar is an excellent gift and a cheap one: Adaa at ₹379 is bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk; Ameeri at ₹385 is Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh; Mastani at ₹389 is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh; Nawaab at ₹399 is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron.
If nothing comes out - and for most of the people we actually have to buy for, nothing does - then a worn gift is a guess with a bow on it. That is the point at which a reed diffuser earns its higher price: it is not better, it is answerable. Nobody has a lifelong loyalty to one hallway scent the way they do to a perfume they have worn since college, so getting a room slightly wrong costs almost nothing.
Tip: No sentence about what they wear means no attar. That rule saves more gifts than any budget.
2
The second question
How close is this, actually?
Knowledge and closeness are not the same thing and people conflate them. You can know exactly what your boss wears because you sit two desks away, and it would still be the wrong gift, because an attar is applied to a body and you are commenting on how somebody smells. That is warm from a sibling and strange from a reporting manager.
So the register test is separate: would it be normal for you to notice this person's skin? For a partner, a parent, a sister or a friend of fifteen years, yes, and an attar is one of the nicest things on the list. For a client, a boss, a new colleague, a landlord or a friend's parents, no - and this is exactly where a reed diffuser is the correct answer rather than the safe one. It goes to a room, carries no assumption about their body, and is appropriate because it is impersonal. The one worn exception is the Attar Trio at ₹1,055, where three bottles read as an edit to try rather than one bottle chosen for them.
3
The third question
Format, size and what the money actually buys
Once you know which product, the size question is completely different for each. For an attar it is a commitment question: 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399 is a genuine gift and also a low-risk one, 6ml at ₹669 to ₹699 is the confident middle, and 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 is for somebody you are certain about. Buying 12ml of a scent somebody turns out not to wear is the most expensive version of the wrong guess.
For a reed it is a room question and not a budget one. 50ml at ₹749 to ₹849 for a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a first diffuser; 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 for an open-plan living and dining area. A 130ml in a small closed bedroom is the standard mistake here and it gets moved to a corridor within a week. Both sizes run about 6 to 10 weeks. To spend more without over-scenting one room, a duo set from ₹1,498 covers two rooms instead.
Tip: Go up in attar size only for people you are sure of. Go up in reed size only for bigger rooms.
The size decision, before the scent decision
50ml or 130ml is a room question, not a budget question
The 50ml from ₹749 suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or anybody receiving their first diffuser. The 130ml from ₹1,249 suits an open-plan living and dining area or a large 3BHK living room, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom - a bigger bottle in the wrong room gets moved into a corridor. All five scents run about 6 to 10 weeks either way.
Choose between an attar and a reed diffuser in four steps
Say out loud what they already wear. Nothing comes out? Then not an attar.
Ask whether noticing this person's skin would be normal for you.
Professional relationship? Reed diffuser, or the Attar Trio at Rs 1,055.
Then size it: 3ml at Rs 379 to start, or 50ml at Rs 749 for one room.
The SOSA principle
An attar needs you to be right about a person and a reed diffuser needs you to be right about a room, but the sharper difference is permission: one of them is a gift you have to be close enough to give.
That is why the same person can be the right recipient for an attar from a sister and the wrong one for an attar from a supplier.
Which attar, which reed, and in which size
The reed range is five scents and they are genuinely different rather than five versions of one idea. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon and mint, the least declarative and the safest for a home you have never stood in. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is British rose and night-blooming jasmine, the one that reads most clearly as a present. Evening Calm at ₹799 is lavender and chamomile, which is the name on the bottle and a description of the ingredients rather than a claim about what it does. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Fresh Brew at ₹849 is Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla - the strongest opinion in the range, and the easiest of the five to get wrong for somebody else.
The SOSA gift edit
Four ways to give an alcohol-free fragrance, and who each one suits
The option
Who it suits, and where it fails
A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399
The lowest-priced real gift SOSA makes, alcohol-free and rolled on. Right for somebody close whose taste you can describe. It fails for a client, a boss or a new colleague, where a gift for the skin is the wrong register however good the oil is.
A 6ml or 12ml attar · ₹669 to ₹1,199
The same four oils in a size that says you are sure. Right for a partner, a sibling or an old friend whose bottle you could name. It fails as a first fragrance gift to anybody - twelve millilitres of a wrong guess is a long-running reminder of it.
The Attar Trio · from ₹1,055
Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box. Three bottles read as a selection rather than a verdict, which is why this is the worn gift that survives a professional setting. It fails when the person already wears one signature and has no interest in trying others.
A 50ml reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849
The impersonal one, and that is the feature. No taste guess, no comment on anybody's body, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in or switch off. It fails for somebody who already runs a diffuser they chose, and in a large open living area where 130ml is the right size.
When it has to look like an occasion
A duo set is the readymade gift box, without anybody assembling a hamper
Two 50ml reeds in one box: Day & Night pairs Morning Freshness lemon-mint with Evening Calm lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with Mountain Breeze pine and cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla with Garden Bloom rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. The 130ml x 2 versions are ₹2,498, ₹2,548 and ₹2,598.
Two practical notes before you buy either. On the attars: they are concentrated oil rather than a spray, so a 3ml at ₹379 is a longer-lived object than the number suggests, and the Attar Trio is ₹1,055 for the 3ml set, ₹1,859 for the 6ml and ₹3,189 for the 12ml. On the reeds: four of the five publish refills at ₹2,399 for 300ml and ₹3,499 for 500ml, and Evening Calm publishes no refill, which matters if you are choosing between it and Garden Bloom at the same ₹799 for somebody you expect to keep it going.
Morning Freshness and Evening Calm in one box, two 50ml bottles. The readymade housewarming and client gift, without a hamper in sight.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.
Tell SOSA who it is for, roughly how big the room is, whether their home is already scented and what you want to spend - and you will be told which size and which scent, including the times the honest answer is the 50ml rather than the 130ml.
An attar is a gift you have to have earned the right to give. A reed diffuser is a gift you can give anybody, and that is not a lesser thing - it is a different job.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA
The SOSA gifting range
Two questions settle almost every reed diffuser gift, and the first one is not price. How big is the room it is going into? A 50ml suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a first diffuser; a 130ml suits an open-plan living and dining area, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom. Then: how much do you actually know about their taste? The less you know, the less declarative the scent should be - Morning Freshness is the safest of the five for a home you have never stood in, and Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla is the strongest opinion in the range. Price follows those two answers rather than leading them.
The SOSA gifting range
Pick the size by the room, then the scent by how little you know about them
Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large open home or a business, not a flat
₹11,999
Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-basedHotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The honest price sheet
What SOSA publishes, and what SOSA does not
Everything below is on the live product pages. Anything not on this list is not something a gifting page should state.
Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla ₹999. Bubble Candles ₹499 unscented and ₹599 scented. Wax melts from ₹499, which need a ceramic burner at ₹599 - so they are only a complete gift for somebody who already owns one.
Not published, and therefore never stated here: how long any fragrance will be liked, delivery or dispatch timing, any festive discount, any minimum order quantity or bulk rate, and any claim about what a person will feel on receiving a gift. Those questions go to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
Not sure which size or which scent? Tell SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 four things: who it is for and how well you know them, roughly how big the room is, whether their home is already scented, and what you want to spend. You will get one straight recommendation rather than a catalogue - including the times the honest answer is the 50ml rather than the 130ml, or a single bottle rather than the duo set. Corporate and client gifting: bulk orders are welcome and custom label or logo on product is available; quantities, terms and anything corporate are discussed on WhatsApp rather than priced on a page. Bespoke composition, a fragrance composed for you by Sonal, is a real SOSA service and is also discussed there. Where SOSA is: SOSA is an Indian fragrance house based in Pune and sends orders across India. There is no SOSA shop, stockist or counter in any other city, so anything you read here about Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mysuru or anywhere else is about the homes in those cities and not about a local branch.

A note from Sonal
The reed diffuser is the product people are least embarrassed to give and most surprised by afterwards. What they expect is a decorative object. What it actually is, is a small piece of a household that runs for six to ten weeks and then ends, which is a very different thing from an ornament somebody has to keep forever out of politeness.
The reason I recommend it so often for gifting is unromantic: you are buying for a room rather than for a person. Personal fragrance is a taste decision, and when you cannot finish the sentence she usually wears something with..., no amount of money makes the guess better. A room does not have a signature scent it is loyal to. That is why a reed diffuser works for a colleague, a client, a mother-in-law and a friend's new flat - relationships where you may like somebody very much and still have no idea what is on their dressing table.
The one thing I would press on is size, because it is where good intentions go wrong. The 130ml is not the better gift, it is the bigger room's gift. Put it in a small closed bedroom and the person will move it to a corridor within a week. A 50ml at ₹749 in the right room beats a 130ml at ₹1,249 in the wrong one every single time, and if you want to spend more, spend it on the duo set so they get two rooms rather than one very loud one.
Frequently asked questions
Is an attar or a reed diffuser the better gift?
Neither is better in general. An attar from Rs 379 is worn on skin and is the more accurate gift when you can name what the person already wears and you are close enough for that to be normal. A reed diffuser from Rs 749 goes into a room, needs no taste guess and is the right answer for everybody else.
Is an attar too personal a gift for a colleague or a client?
A single attar usually is, because you are choosing something for somebody's skin. The Attar Trio from Rs 1,055 reads as a selection of three rather than a verdict, which makes it workable, and a reed diffuser is appropriate at work precisely because it is impersonal.
What sizes do SOSA attars come in and what do they cost?
Three sizes. 3ml is Rs 379 for Adaa, Rs 385 for Ameeri, Rs 389 for Mastani and Rs 399 for Nawaab. 6ml runs Rs 669 to Rs 699 and 12ml runs Rs 1,149 to Rs 1,199. The Attar Trio of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani is Rs 1,055, Rs 1,859 or Rs 3,189 depending on the size.
How long does a reed diffuser last compared with an attar?
A reed diffuser runs about 6 to 10 weeks, which is the only duration SOSA publishes, and then it is finished. An attar is concentrated oil used a little at a time, so it is not on a clock in the same way. SOSA publishes no wear time for an attar, so nobody should be quoting one.
Can I ask SOSA to pick between them for me?
Yes. Message SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your relationship to the person, whether you can name a fragrance they already wear, how big their home is and what you want to spend. You will get one recommendation rather than a list, including the times the honest answer is the cheaper attar.
Take the next step
Worn or room: decide on what you know, then on how close you are
An attar from ₹379 when you can name what they wear and the relationship carries it; the Attar Trio from ₹1,055 when it has to stay professional but still be worn; a reed diffuser from ₹749 when you cannot name a thing, which is most of the time and no reflection on anybody. Tell SOSA the relationship on WhatsApp and you will get one answer rather than a catalogue.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.
