Founder Diaries · Just-Because & Surprise Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
Most people typing this have already decided on perfume and are choosing between bottles. The harder and more useful question is format, because you are not there to explain how the thing is meant to be worn. A perfume is a taste decision that either lands or sits unopened, and a bad guess on a bottle you cannot take back is simply a wasted gift - which is why this page spends most of its time on the alternatives.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white royal oud and Kashmir saffron, from Rs 399
SOSA Nawaab · white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron from ₹399 →
Leading with an attar on a page about perfume, for a reason. SOSA Nawaab, from ₹399 for 3ml - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, alcohol-free and rolled on rather than sprayed. When you are not there to explain how something is worn, the smaller and simpler format is usually the better send. Perfume starts at ₹599 for 10ml if you already know their taste.
Quick answers — read this first
How much is a SOSA perfume? ₹599 for the 10ml size, ₹1,799 or ₹1,899 for 50ml and ₹3,499 or ₹3,599 for 100ml, depending on the scent. They are alcohol-free. The SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions.

Perfume or attar for a long-distance partner? An attar from ₹379 is usually the better send. It is alcohol-free concentrated oil rolled onto the pulse points rather than sprayed, the 3ml size is small enough that a wrong guess costs little, and it needs no instructions at the other end.

What if I do not know which perfume they like? Then do not send a perfume. Send an attar in the 3ml size, the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 so they choose, or a reed diffuser from ₹749 for their room, which asks nothing about their taste at all.
The short answer
Short answer: SOSA perfumes are Rs 599 for 10ml, Rs 1,799 to Rs 1,899 for 50ml and Rs 3,499 to Rs 3,599 for 100ml. Attars are alcohol-free oil from Rs 379 for 3ml. If you cannot name a fragrance they already wear, send the attar or a home fragrance rather than the perfume.
The pick: A 3ml SOSA Nawaab attar at ₹399, or a 10ml perfume at ₹599 only when you know exactly what they wear.
Why: The attar is smaller, alcohol-free, needs no explanation and costs little if the guess is wrong - which is the realistic risk when you are choosing a fragrance for somebody in another city.
Choosing a gift when there is no occasion - at a glanceSmall enough not to need explaining - attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, duo set ₹1,498Posted to another city - flat, light, nothing to assembleNever - anything that needs a reason to justify it
A gift with no occasion attached has one job an occasion gift does not: it has to make sense on its own. That usually means small enough not to need explaining and useful enough not to sit there - which is why a ₹379 attar often lands better than something three times the price handed over with an apology for the timing.
Straight answer
Should I send my long-distance partner a perfume, and which size?
Send a perfume only if you can name the fragrance family they already wear, and if you can, the 10ml at ₹599 is the size to send rather than the 50ml at ₹1,799 to ₹1,899 or the 100ml at ₹3,499 to ₹3,599. The SOSA perfumes are alcohol-free and are SOSA's own compositions - Bahaar, Chashni, Khayaal, Tabac Noir and Zaffran. If you cannot name what they wear, be honest that you are guessing and change format. An attar from ₹379 is alcohol-free concentrated oil, rolled onto the wrists and neck rather than sprayed, and the 3ml bottle makes a wrong guess a small loss instead of a ₹1,899 one. The Attar Trio at ₹1,055 moves the choosing to their end. And a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749, lasting about 6 to 10 weeks, sidesteps the taste question entirely by belonging to a room instead of a person. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
A perfume you guessed at is not a cheap mistake and it is not a returnable one. Guess smaller - that is the entire argument of this page.
The safer format when you are not there to explain it: an alcohol-free attar from ₹379, rolled on rather than sprayed, in a sealed 3ml bottle.
SOSA attars from ₹379

Perfume, attar or home fragrance - the format decision

Perfume, attar and home fragrance are three different formats, not three price points of the same thing. They are worn or used differently, they fail differently, and the distance between you and the person opening the box changes which one makes sense.

1
Format one
Perfume - ₹599 for 10ml, and a taste decision you cannot take back
The SOSA perfumes are alcohol-free and come in 10ml at ₹599, 50ml at ₹1,799 or ₹1,899 and 100ml at ₹3,499 or ₹3,599. There are five: Bahaar, which is pear and freesia; Chashni, sweet and fruity; Khayaal; Tabac Noir, tobacco and vanilla; and Zaffran, saffron and sweet amber. They are SOSA's own compositions rather than versions of anybody else's fragrance.

The thing to be clear-eyed about is that a perfume is worn on a person's skin in front of other people, which makes it the most exposed gift in this range. If your guess is wrong the bottle goes in a cupboard, and at 50ml or 100ml that is a lot of money sitting in a cupboard. When you know their taste, send the 10ml at ₹599 anyway - a small bottle of the right thing is a better gift than a large bottle of a maybe.
Tip: If you are guessing at a perfume, buy the 10ml or change format entirely.
2
Format two
Attar - alcohol-free oil from ₹379, and the easier thing to send
An attar is concentrated perfume oil applied to the pulse points with a roll-on rather than sprayed. No alcohol, no cloud, no atomiser - which also means nothing to demonstrate. Adaa is ₹379, Ameeri ₹385, Mastani ₹389 and Nawaab ₹399 for 3ml, with 6ml from ₹669 and 12ml from ₹1,149.

Two reasons it suits a long-distance send better than a perfume. The 3ml size means a wrong guess costs about the same as lunch rather than about the same as a month of somebody's phone bill. And it wears close to the skin, which makes it easier for a person to try on an ordinary working day without committing to it in front of a room.
3
Format three
Home fragrance - when you want the taste question to go away
If you cannot describe what they wear, the honest move is not to buy something worn at all. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 belongs to a room rather than a person, runs about 6 to 10 weeks, has nothing to plug in and nothing to switch off. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is lemon and mint and is the least declarative of the five.

Car fragrance from ₹449 is the same principle aimed at a car - nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price. For somebody who commutes daily it is used more often than any perfume would be, and it involves no claim about their taste in what they wear.
Tip: When you cannot finish the sentence about their taste, stop buying for their skin.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.
See the SOSA attars →
Work it out in this order
How to pick the format in four steps
  1. Name the fragrance they already wear. If you cannot, skip perfume entirely.
  2. If you can name it, send the 10ml at Rs 599 rather than the 50ml or 100ml.
  3. If you cannot, send a 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399 or the Trio at Rs 1,055.
  4. Still unsure? Buy for their room: a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849.
The SOSA principle
Format is a bigger decision than scent when you are not in the room, because format decides how much a wrong guess costs and whether anybody has to be talked through it.
A small bottle of the right thing beats a large bottle of a maybe, every single time.

Sizes and prices, and which one to actually send

On the attars, which is where most of these end up: Adaa at ₹379 is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac - the daytime one. Ameeri at ₹385 is Taif rose, Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron with a little soft oudh. Mastani at ₹389 is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. Nawaab at ₹399 is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, the most formal of the four and the one to send to somebody who already wears oud-led things. Sizes run 3ml, 6ml at ₹669 to ₹699 and 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199. The Attar Trio puts Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box at ₹1,055 for three 3ml bottles, which is the best answer on this page for a person whose taste you cannot describe.

The SOSA gift edit
The four formats, side by side
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
SOSA perfume · ₹599 to ₹3,599 Alcohol-free, 10ml at ₹599, 50ml at ₹1,799 to ₹1,899, 100ml at ₹3,499 to ₹3,599, in five SOSA compositions. The right gift when you can name what they wear. It fails as a guess, and the bigger the bottle the more that failure costs.
A SOSA attar · ₹379 to ₹1,199 Alcohol-free concentrated oil, rolled on rather than sprayed, in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. Smaller, sealed and needs no demonstration, which is why it suits a send better than a spray bottle. It fails for somebody who dislikes oil-based fragrance on their skin.
The Attar Trio · from ₹1,055 Three 3ml bottles - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - in one box. The honest answer when you cannot describe their taste, because the choosing happens at their end. It fails by reading as a set rather than as a light, unmarked Tuesday gift.
A reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹1,349 Passive home fragrance for a room, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in. Removes the taste question completely. It fails in a shared flat, and the 130ml is a size for a home you are standing in rather than one you are sending to.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
The gift that goes to a home
A reed duo set is a readymade gift box without any guessing about taste
Two reed diffusers in one box: Day & Night pairs lemon-mint with lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with pine-cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs coffee-vanilla with rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
See the reed duo sets →

One last thing worth saying plainly. Solid body perfumes exist in the range at ₹469 to ₹549 for 15g and they are a genuinely neat format to send - but they are still worn, so they carry the same taste risk as a perfume and none of the get-out. The only formats that remove that risk are the ones aimed at a place: a reed diffuser for a room, car fragrance for a car. If your honest position is that you do not know what your partner wears, that is not a failure of attention - it is very common - and the right response is to buy for somewhere they are rather than for their skin.

SOSA Attar Trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
Ameeri (Taif rose and sandalwood), Nawaab (white oud and saffron) and Mastani (night jasmine and rose) in one box. Three characters instead of one guess.
₹1,055 · 3ml x 3
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,498
Morning Freshness lemon-mint and Evening Calm lavender-chamomile together. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
SOSA Safar waterless cordless car and travel perfume diffuser, Rs 3,999
Waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold diffusion for a car or a travel bag. The gift for someone who spends real hours driving.
₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

People ask me which perfume to send and I usually answer with a question: can you name the one they already own? If not, we are choosing a format, not a scent.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

The SOSA gifting range

Three questions settle almost every one of these. Will it be worn, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to be able to name something they already wear? Will it sit in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser asks nothing of you except an address? Or does it go in a car, where the real choice is between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray at the same price? Answer that, then pick the band - and with no occasion attached, the band should usually be lower than you first reach for.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three characters instead of one guess from ₹1,055
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the readymade home gift from ₹1,498
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA Safar Waterless car and travel diffuser Cordless and rechargeable cold diffusion, for the person who actually lives in their car ₹3,999
SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The orders I like most are the ones with no date attached. Somebody buys one attar on a Wednesday afternoon and asks us to send it to a flat in another city, and there is no birthday in the note and no anniversary and no festival. Those are, in my experience, the gifts that actually get used, and I think the reason is unglamorous: nobody has to live up to them. An anniversary gift carries an expectation. A Wednesday gift carries none, so it gets opened, put on a shelf and used the next morning.

The practical advice I give people is the opposite of what they expect. Go smaller than you think. A large unexplained present asks a question - what is this for, what do I owe you - and the person receiving it spends energy answering it. A ₹379 attar, a ₹449 car scent, a ₹749 reed diffuser: these are small enough to be accepted without any of that. If you want to spend more, spend it on accuracy instead of size - the right scent for somebody's actual flat beats a bigger bottle of the wrong one every time.

One honest thing about the harder version of this. People write to us when somebody they love is having a terrible week, and they want to send something that helps. I will not tell you that a fragrance does that, because it does not. What a small parcel says is: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. That is a real thing to say to somebody and it is worth saying. It is not treatment, it is not a substitute for turning up, and anybody who sells it to you as either is selling you something else.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a SOSA perfume cost?
Rs 599 for 10ml, Rs 1,799 or Rs 1,899 for 50ml and Rs 3,499 or Rs 3,599 for 100ml, depending on the scent. All of them are alcohol-free, and they are SOSA's own compositions.
What is the difference between a perfume and an attar?
A perfume is sprayed and covers more skin and more air. An attar is concentrated oil applied with a roll-on to the pulse points, so it sits closer to the skin. SOSA attars are alcohol-free and start at Rs 379 for 3ml, against Rs 599 for a 10ml perfume.
Is a perfume a risky gift to send someone in another city?
It is the riskiest fragrance format, yes, because it is a direct claim about their taste and you are not there to talk them through it. If you can name the fragrance they already wear, it is a good gift. If you cannot, an attar at Rs 379 or a home fragrance at Rs 749 is the safer send.
Which size perfume should I send?
The 10ml at Rs 599, unless you are certain. A small bottle of something they like is a better gift than a large bottle of something they might not, and the 50ml and 100ml sizes are for people replacing a fragrance they have already committed to.
What should I send if I genuinely have no idea what they like?
The Attar Trio at Rs 1,055, which gives them three characters to choose from, or a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 for their room. You can also message SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and describe the person, and you will get one recommendation instead of a list.
SOSA fragrance gift
Take the next step
Send the format that survives a wrong guess
If you can name the fragrance they already wear, a 10ml perfume at ₹599 is a good gift. If you cannot, an attar from ₹379 or the Trio at ₹1,055 keeps the guess small, and a reed diffuser from ₹749 removes the guess altogether. Describe them on WhatsApp and SOSA will name one thing rather than five.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.

No claim is made about how any recipient will feel about a gift. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep, comfort or wellbeing: fragrance is a scent, not a treatment, and where a product name contains a word such as Calm that is a name and not an effect. Where this guide covers sending something to a person having a difficult time, it treats a gift as a gesture of attention alongside real support and never as a substitute for a person or for professional help, and it gives no mental-health advice. No delivery date, dispatch time, order cut-off, discount or minimum order quantity is stated anywhere on this page; corporate and bulk enquiries are answered on WhatsApp. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand; the SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions and are not the designer fragrances they are described as being inspired by.
