What usually causes it? Curing and airing time being squeezed when an order runs late: resin finishes not fully cured, print solvent not flashed off, and fabric moving from finishing to packing without sitting.
What is the fix? Put the airing hours back into the schedule, add local capture at finishing and printing, hold chemical areas at negative pressure, and keep solvent containers closed.
Your buyer is not smelling your chemistry. He is smelling your delivery schedule
This is a question we answer against our own commercial interest, and we would rather do that than take money for something that will make your position worse. Fragrance is additive rather than subtractive. That is not a caveat, it is the mechanism: an ambient register does not remove, neutralise, destroy or replace an existing smell, it joins it, and the two are perceived together. So a diffuser in a unit with a chemical character does not give your buyer a pleasant building. It gives him the chemical character and the fragrance simultaneously, which is immediately legible as a mixture, and it carries an additional message neither component carries alone: that somebody noticed the problem and decided to cover it rather than fix it. In a trade where you are asking a buyer to accept your description of goods he cannot fully inspect, converting a process question into an honesty question is an expensive trade. It is the same reason a sprayed used-car cabin creates exactly the suspicion it was meant to remove. Now the useful half, which is what the smell actually is. In our experience surveying Surat units, a persistent chemical character is far more often a schedule symptom than a chemistry one, and the distinction matters because it changes who can fix it. Think about where the smell is generated and where it is supposed to go. Resin, crease-resist and easy-care finishes cure over time and temperature, and continue to release for a period after the cloth leaves the stenter. Printed and coated goods carry solvent that has to flash off. Dyed and washed goods carry residues that dissipate with air movement. Every one of those processes assumes a period afterwards in which the fabric sits, ventilated, and releases what it is going to release. That period is real production time, and it is the only part of the whole sequence that looks, to a production manager under pressure at nine in the evening, like doing nothing at all. So when an order is late - and in Surat, in season, orders are late - the airing hours are the first thing taken. The cloth moves from finishing to folding, from folding to bagging, from bagging into a carton, and it is sealed with everything it had not yet released still inside it. And a sealed bag does not disperse: it concentrates. Four or five days later a buyer opens that bag in an office in Dubai, Lagos, Dhaka or Milan, and what he smells is not really your chemistry. It is a decision you made on a Thursday afternoon. This reframing is worth taking seriously because it tells you who owns the fix and how cheap it is. The fix is a line in the production plan: a named airing step with a minimum duration, a physical space to do it in with air movement through it, and a rule that the step is not skipped when the schedule slips - which means building it into the promised lead time rather than treating it as slack. It costs hours, not rupees, and it is the single highest-return change most units can make to how their goods are received. Around it sit the engineering measures, all of which are subtractive and therefore actually work. Local capture at the finishing and printing points, so process air is extracted where it is generated rather than diluted across the floor and into everything absorbent nearby. Negative pressure in chemical stores, dye kitchens and solvent areas, so those rooms export nothing when a door opens - and a self-closing door on each. Solvent and chemical containers kept closed as a matter of discipline rather than habit, since an open drum is a continuous source. Separation between finishing output and finished-goods storage, because cloth that is still releasing should not be stored beside cloth that is ready to ship - textiles have a very large internal surface area and take up ambient volatiles readily, so contaminated air moves from one stack into another. And air movement in the storage areas themselves, which does double duty in a Surat monsoon. That brings the second common source, because when buyers say chemicals they sometimes mean something else. A musty, mildewed character from stock that sat through months of heavily humid Tapi monsoon in a closed godown is the other complaint we hear most, and it is a humidity and air-movement problem. Measure it: a cheap hygrometer in the godown will tell you more than any inspection. Sustained high relative humidity in still air with fabric stacked directly on a floor and packed tight is the condition that produces it, and no fragrance will remove it while it travels with every piece. Dehumidification, circulation, pallets off the floor, gaps between stacks, and stock rotation are the answers. Then the building itself, which contributes more than most owners credit and which is the same list anywhere in Surat. A cooling coil that has run wet through a long monsoon with standing water in its condensate tray is the most common single source we find behind a sour building, and it presents as a smell people attribute to the process rather than to the plant. Filters loaded far faster than a generic service interval assumes, because road and industrial dust here is heavy. A mechanical fresh-air provision drawn but never commissioned, which matters because cooling is not ventilation - a recirculating system lowers temperature and introduces no outdoor air whatsoever, so a closed office or sample room goes stale by mid-afternoon regardless of temperature. A pantry or canteen pressurised by supply with no extract, exporting into circulation every time a door swings. Wet waste held until closing. Floor traps emptied by a long dry summer, letting drainage air back in. Run the supply-grille test before anybody proposes a purchase: smell the air right at a supply grille shortly after startup, then compare it with room air well away from any grille. If the supply is the sourer of the two, the problem is in your plant and you should ask for coil and condensate tray cleaning by name rather than a general service. That one test redirects a great many of these conversations. Now, where does that leave scenting in a textile unit at all? In a narrow but genuine place, and only after the above. The governing rule in this trade is absolute: if cloth enters a room, that room gets nothing. Fabric absorbs and holds for weeks, samples travel in sealed bags, and buyers smell fabric deliberately as part of assessment - checking for exactly the finishing chemistry, sizing, solvent and mildew this page is about. A perfumed sample removes that check, and the conclusion a buyer draws is never the charitable one. So sample rooms, display racks, selection tables, godowns, cutting, packing and production floors get nothing at all. Chemical and dye stores get nothing. Staff work areas get nothing, because your people are there ten hours a day and cannot leave over the air. Corridors get nothing, because they are mixing zones. Pantries and sanitary areas get extraction rather than fragrance. Covered and semi-outdoor space - loading bays, yard canopies, covered walkways - cannot hold a register at all at any price, so nobody should quote you for them. What remains is a visitor entrance or a waiting area with no cloth in it, separated from storage by a door that actually closes, with the pressure checked so the entrance is not pushing air towards the fabric. There, a low setting on short timer cycles matched to real arrival hours is reasonable, and it does one honest thing: it gives a buyer arriving from a hot dusty street a moment of cooler, drier, quieter air. Most Surat businesses that call us have already spent well on interiors, and the question underneath the question is usually the same: why does a room that looks expensive not feel expensive. Part of the answer is air, and part of it is not. So before we sell anybody a machine we ask what the building is currently producing - street dust at a busy junction, a pantry two doors from a client lounge, HVAC filters nobody has changed since installation, a packing area, a drain in a sanitary area.
