Why does a self-built house change the gift? Because it is often occupied while part of it is still being completed, so both the off-gassing and the size of the finished home are moving targets.
When should the machine be given? Once building work has stopped, the paint has aired and the connected volume is settled - which may be a year after the housewarming.
A self-built house is finished in stages
There is a difference between a house somebody bought and a house somebody built, and for this gift it matters more than the city does. A builder villa in a gated layout is handed over complete, to a plan repeated along the road, with a known built-up area. A house built by a family on its own plot is none of those things. The plan is theirs, so no two are alike - one has a double-height living room because somebody wanted one, another has a formal sitting room at the front and the family space at the back, another is built around a central courtyard. There is usually a garden or a compound rather than a shared landscape. And crucially, these houses are frequently occupied in stages: the ground floor is finished and lived in while the first floor is a shell for later, or two bedrooms are complete and the third is waiting, or the kitchen is done and the utility is not. That produces two practical consequences for a fragrance gift. The first is that the off-gassing does not happen once. A newly finished stretch of house releases solvent from emulsion and enamel paint, wood polish, varnish, adhesive, sealant, cement, new plywood and laminate for days to weeks - and in a house being completed in stages, that starts again every time a new portion is painted. So the standard advice of open the windows for a few weeks and then scent the house does not have a clean end point. The practical version is to scent the settled rooms and leave the rest alone: a bedroom finished eight months ago is a normal room and can have a bottle in it; a corridor painted last week needs air rather than fragrance. Fortunately this city's climate makes the airing easy for much of the year - windows open, cross ventilation, fans moving air through rather than around rooms - so the finished parts of the house genuinely do settle. The second consequence is that nobody can size a machine for a house that is not finished. The SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is rated for up to a thousand cubic metres, stated as about two thousand to three thousand square feet, and the number that matters is the connected volume of the completed house - which in a staged build is not yet known. Buy it now for a ground floor and it may be under-sized when the upper floor opens; buy it for the eventual plan and it over-scents the part currently lived in. So the honest structure is bottles at the housewarming and the machine at the point where the house is actually finished, which for a self-built home is a real and recognisable moment, often a year or more after the first puja. Saying that when you hand over the gift is not a hedge; it is the thing that makes the second gift possible, and it gives you something to give next time. On bottles, and they are the right answer here rather than a lesser one: Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty is Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus, which reads clean and is the obvious choice for a room near a kitchen. Garden Bloom at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine is British rose with night-blooming jasmine. Evening Calm at the same is lavender with chamomile, the usual bedroom choice. Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine is Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, dry and resinous, which sits naturally with the teak and rosewood common in houses built to be kept. Fresh Brew at the same is Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla, good in a study or dining room. A duo set at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees is the version to give as a housewarming present, because two registers in two finished rooms is exactly right for a house that is not uniform yet - Day and Night pairs Morning Freshness with Evening Calm, Fresh and Grounded pairs Morning Freshness with Mountain Breeze, and Warmth and Bloom pairs Fresh Brew with Garden Bloom. Two notes on asking, which is unavoidable here and easier than it sounds. Because self-built houses vary so much, the built-up area and the layout are worth asking rather than guessing - and the useful question is not how many square feet but whether the living and dining run together or are separate rooms, because that decides more than the area does. A house of separate rooms is a bottle house at any size, since each room gets a correctly sized source of its own; a house with a connected ground floor, a hallway opening into it and a staircase is the case for a machine. And if the house is single storey on a large plot, as many here are, there is no stairwell to carry fragrance upward, which means a machine relies entirely on the horizontal airflow and should sit in the main circulation rather than a corner. Three closing points. If and when the machine is the answer, it is waterless - no tank, no humidity added, no oily film - with a four hundred millilitre tank lasting up to around seventy-five days a fill, one, four, eight and twenty-four hour windows with day selection and adjustable intensity, under thirty-eight decibels, five watts, nine hundred grams, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, auto-stop and key lock, and four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included so it runs the first evening; its refills are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred, never the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is a separate system for ultrasonic diffusers. Where there is a griha pravesh it is a religious occasion and nothing in this range is a religious item or part of any ritual. And where a smell has a cause - fresh cement, a damp patch from the monsoon, a drain trap that has dried out - fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.
So both the airing out and the coverage question are moving targets
Gifted in stages, because the house was built that way.
| Scent | Why it suits the mood |
|---|---|
| At the housewarming · duo ₹1,498 | Two registers in two finished rooms. Assumes nothing about the rest of the house. |
| Freshly painted portions · air, not scent | Cross ventilation and fans. Fragrance over curing paint smells of both. |
| When the house is finished · Vaayu ₹11,999 | Sized on the completed connected volume, up to 1,000 m³. |
| Ask · living and dining together? | That decides more than the square footage does. |

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
