When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. A warm room evaporates faster, a fan or an AC clears scented air faster, and flipping the reeds frequently uses the oil quicker. Within that window, faint across the room is normal and faint at the bottle is not. Past that window, a drop in strength at the bottle itself is expected rather than faulty, because the reeds gradually clog with the heavier fragrance materials and stop wicking efficiently. A fresh set of reeds in the same oil usually brings a surprising amount of it back. If oil remains but no reeds will lift it, message us and we will talk it through.
My friend's reed diffuser seems to fill her whole flat. Is mine worse?
Almost certainly not, and it is worth understanding what you are comparing. Reed performance is set far more by the room than by the bottle, so the same diffuser in two homes can read completely differently. Her space may be smaller or more compartmentalised, her doors may be closed more often, she may not run a ceiling fan in that room, her flat may be warmer, or the bottle may simply sit closer to where she and her guests actually stand. There is also a nose effect: you have adapted to your own home's background scent and she has adapted to hers, so each of you notices the other's more. If you want a genuine comparison, put your bottle in a small closed room for a day and see how it reads. Most people are reassured immediately.
Does turning the reeds upside down help or is that a myth?
It genuinely helps in the short term and it is a real technique rather than folklore. The end of the reed sitting in the oil is fully saturated while the exposed end gradually becomes the limiting part, so inverting the sticks brings a freshly loaded surface up into the air and gives you a noticeable lift for a day or two. Do it about once a week, over the sink or with a tissue, and wash your hands afterwards. What it does not do is change the geometry of the result. A refreshed reed evaporates a bit faster, so the pocket of scented air around the bottle gets stronger, and it still has no way to travel to the far side of the room. It also shortens the run, since the oil is being used more quickly.
Is a reed diffuser still worth keeping if it only works near the bottle?
For many rooms, absolutely, and we would be doing you a disservice to suggest otherwise. A bathroom is a small volume of still air behind a closed door, which is where a reed diffuser is at its genuine best. A bedside table, a study, a guest room, an entryway console and a shelf beside a reading chair are all places where scent near the object is exactly the point. It needs no power, makes no noise, has nothing to break, does not need refilling with water and does not risk white dust. Those are real advantages, not consolation prizes. The moment to add something active is when your goal changes from a lovely scented spot to a room that smells of it, and that moment is a decision rather than a repair.
If I want the whole room to smell of it, is the Safar the answer?
Not for that particular goal, and we would rather tell you honestly.
