Founder Diaries · Reader Question · Cost Arithmetic
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
This is an arithmetic question, so let me do the arithmetic rather than the persuading. A SOSA 50ml reed diffuser is ₹749 and runs 6–8 weeks, which is ₹416 to ₹535 a month; run on refills it comes down to roughly ₹240–₹330 a month. Hold those against the number you would give me for your own monthly spend and the answer falls out without help from me. Above roughly ₹300 a month, a refilled reed setup costs you less. Above roughly ₹500 a month it costs less even if you never refill. Below roughly ₹240 a month, nothing I sell is cheaper than what you are already doing — and I would rather write that than lose your trust over ₹749. One thing I will not do anywhere on this page: tell you what your current product costs, how long it lasts, or how well it works. You know your number. I know mine.
Quick answers — read this first
The SOSA half of the sum. Morning Freshness 50ml at ₹749 runs 6–8 weeks. Six weeks is about 1.4 months, so ₹749 ÷ 1.4 ≈ ₹535 a month; eight weeks is about 1.8 months, so ₹749 ÷ 1.8 ≈ ₹416 a month.

The refill is where it moves. One ₹749 bottle plus a 300ml refill at ₹2,399 is ₹3,148 and covers roughly 9.5 to 13 months — ₹3,148 ÷ 13 ≈ ₹242, ₹3,148 ÷ 9.5 ≈ ₹331.

The flip point. If your own stated monthly spend is above about ₹300, the refilled reed setup is the cheaper habit. Above about ₹500 it is cheaper even without refills.

The refusal. If your own stated monthly spend is under about ₹240, buy nothing here on cost grounds — buy a reed diffuser for the constant low fragrance, not for a saving that is not there.
The short answer
Short answer: yes, if the number you would name for your own monthly spend is above roughly ₹300 and you intend to refill. Start with Morning Freshness 50ml at ₹749 or Evening Calm at ₹799 for one room, keep the glass and the reeds, and take the 300ml refill at ₹2,399 when it empties. If your number is under roughly ₹240 a month, the honest answer is no.
The mechanism of the saving: it is not the bottle, it is the second purchase. A fresh 50ml is roughly ₹15–17 per ml because you are buying a glass vessel and six fibre reeds along with the oil. Refills are oil only — 300ml ₹2,399, 500ml ₹3,499 — at roughly ₹7–8 per ml. You buy the hardware once and the fragrance many times, and the per-month figure roughly halves from year two onward.
Straight answer
I buy something for the house every month — would a reed diffuser actually cost me less?
1. Write your own monthly number down first, honestly. Not what you meant to spend; what left your account for home fragrance across the last three months, divided by three. That figure is the only one here that is not mine — I will not guess it or characterise what it buys.

2. Now the SOSA half, which I can quote exactly. A 50ml bottle is ₹749 to ₹849 and runs 6–8 weeks at six reeds. Six weeks is 1.4 months and eight weeks is 1.8, so a ₹749 bottle bought fresh every time is ₹749 ÷ 1.8 ≈ ₹416 a month at best and ₹749 ÷ 1.4 ≈ ₹535 a month at worst.

3. Then the refilled version, which is the one that matters. ₹749 for the first bottle plus a 300ml refill at ₹2,399 is ₹3,148, and between them they run roughly 9.5 to 13 months. ₹3,148 ÷ 13 ≈ ₹242 a month; ₹3,148 ÷ 9.5 ≈ ₹331. Take the 500ml instead and it is ₹749 + ₹3,499 = ₹4,248 across roughly 15.5 to 20 months — ₹4,248 ÷ 20 ≈ ₹212, ₹4,248 ÷ 15.5 ≈ ₹274.

4. The flip points, stated as numbers. Above roughly ₹300 a month of your own spend, the refilled reed setup is cheaper. Above roughly ₹500 a month, it is cheaper even if you never refill. Between ₹240 and ₹300 it is close enough that cost should not decide it. Below roughly ₹240, a reed diffuser is not a saving and I will not dress it up as one.

5. The saving is back-loaded. Year one pays for glass, reeds and oil; year two pays for oil alone. If you will not still want fragrance in a year, compare against the first-year number — ₹416 to ₹535 a month — and not the ₹242.

6. Do not buy a bigger bottle expecting a bigger room. The 130ml at ₹1,249 runs 14–18 weeks rather than 6–8; at six reeds it fills the same room. ₹1,249 ÷ 4 months ≈ ₹312 — a duration purchase, not a strength one.

Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C heat and 85% humidity; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: ₹749 ÷ 6–8 weeks is ₹416–₹535 a month; ₹749 + a ₹2,399 refill is ₹3,148 across 9.5–13 months, or ₹242–₹331 a month. If the monthly number you would state for yourself is above about ₹300 and you intend to refill, a reed diffuser is cheaper. Below about ₹240 it is not, and you should buy it for the fragrance or not at all.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser 50ml at ₹749, the entry price in the range
The number the whole sum rests on
SOSA Morning Freshness · Malabar lemon, peppermint & Nilgiri eucalyptus ₹749 / 50ml
₹749 is the floor of the SOSA reed range — there is nothing cheaper in any size, and there is no 100ml; the sizes are 50ml and 130ml. It buys fragrance oil, a refillable glass bottle and six fibre reeds, and it runs 6–8 weeks at six reeds with no socket, no switch and no top-up. That is ₹94–₹125 a week. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT carrier, tested through 45°C heat and 85% humidity. The 130ml at ₹1,249 runs 14–18 weeks at the same level. Flip weekly with gloves, stand it on a tray, keep it out of direct sun.

Part one — the half of the sum I can actually quote

A comparison is only honest if both sides are known to whoever is doing it. You know one side and I know the other, so the useful thing I can do is set mine down in full, with the divisions written out.

1
WHAT I WILL NOT PUT IN THIS SUM
Your side of the comparison is yours to state, and I have no business estimating it
You will not find another product priced, named or rated anywhere on this page, nor a claim about how long anything other than a SOSA bottle lasts or how far it carries. I have no way of knowing what you buy, what you pay or whether it does what you want — and a brand that invents that half of the arithmetic in order to win it is telling you something about itself. So: you supply one number, I supply mine with the working shown, and the comparison resolves without either of us guessing.
The one rule: use three months of your own actual spending, not the month you overspent and not the month you skipped.
2
₹749 DIVIDED BY THE WEEKS IT RUNS
Between ₹94 and ₹125 a week, or ₹416 to ₹535 a month, with nothing else to add
SOSA Evening Calm reed diffuser 50ml at ₹799Evening Calm₹799 · 50mlA 50ml runs 6–8 weeks. Divide: ₹749 ÷ 8 = ₹94 a week, ₹749 ÷ 6 ≈ ₹125 a week. Taking a month as 4.33 weeks, ₹749 ÷ 1.8 ≈ ₹416 and ₹749 ÷ 1.4 ≈ ₹535. Nothing else joins that total — no electricity, no battery, no cartridge, no consumable of any kind between opening it and emptying it, because the reeds and the glass come in the box. At ₹799 for Evening Calm the same division gives ₹100–₹133 a week; at ₹849 for Mountain Breeze, ₹106–₹142.
3
THE SECOND PURCHASE IS WHERE IT ACTUALLY MOVES
₹15–17 per ml for a fresh bottle against ₹7–8 per ml for oil alone
A fresh 50ml is not fifty millilitres of oil; it is fifty millilitres of oil plus a glass vessel and six fibre reeds, which works out at roughly ₹15–17 per ml. The refills are oil and nothing else — 300ml at ₹2,399 for roughly 8–11 months, 500ml at ₹3,499 for roughly 14–18 — which is roughly ₹7–8 per ml. Buy the hardware once, buy the fragrance many times, and your per-month figure roughly halves from the second purchase onward. Keep the glass. Keep the reeds too, wiped and stood upright somewhere dry, because replacement reeds are not sold separately — an honest gap in the range, and the reason a spare set is worth having.
The arithmetic: ₹749 + ₹2,399 = ₹3,148 for roughly 9.5–13 months. That is ₹242–₹331 a month, all in.

Part two — where your own number flips the answer

Six versions of the same sum, one for each monthly figure a reader might state about themselves. The left-hand column is not the price of any product; it is the number you would give me for your own spending. The starred row is where the answer changes, and every total to its right is arithmetic on SOSA prices you can check on the product pages.

Your stated monthly spend against SOSA's published prices
Twelve months of your own habit, compared with twelve months of reeds
If the figure you state for yourself is That is, over twelve months Reed year, fresh bottles only Reed year, one bottle then a refill Cheaper for you
About ₹300 a month ★ ₹3,600 ₹749 × 7 ≈ ₹5,243 — dearer ₹749 + ₹2,399 = ₹3,148 — cheaper by ₹452 Reeds, but only once you refill
About ₹150 a month ₹1,800 ₹5,243 — far dearer ₹3,148 — still dearer by ₹1,348 Your own habit. Buy nothing here on cost
About ₹250 a month ₹3,000 ₹5,243 — dearer ₹3,148 — dearer by ₹148, within noise Too close to call. Decide on the fragrance
About ₹450 a month ₹5,400 ₹5,243 — cheaper by ₹157 ₹3,148 — cheaper by ₹2,252 Reeds, comfortably
About ₹700 a month ₹8,400 ₹5,243 — cheaper by ₹3,157 ₹3,148 — cheaper by ₹5,252 Reeds, and you could run two rooms
About ₹700 a month, two rooms already ₹8,400 ₹5,243 × 2 = ₹10,486 — dearer Duo ₹1,498 + ₹3,499 = ₹4,997, two rooms Reeds on refills: ₹8,400 − ₹4,997 = ₹3,403 saved
The honest caveat: the "seven bottles" figure is ₹749 × 7 = ₹5,243 and assumes seven weeks a bottle, the middle of the 6–8 range; a warm room empties one sooner and high humidity slows evaporation from the reed surface, so treat it as arithmetic on a typical range, not a measured result. The refill column assumes you keep your glass and reeds — throw the vessel away and the saving goes with it, and replacement reeds are not sold separately. Nothing in the left-hand column is a price I have quoted for any product; it is your own stated spending. And if your number sits inside the ₹240–₹300 band, cost is telling you nothing and the decision is simply whether you want a constant low fragrance in the room.

The three purchases the arithmetic actually points at
The SOSA principle
A brand that has to invent the other side of a price comparison in order to win it has already told you the answer it was hoping for.
So this page prices exactly one product line — ours — and hands you the division. If your number comes out under ours, that is the result, and you should keep your money.

Part three — when the honest answer is to keep your money

There are three situations where the sum genuinely does not favour a reed diffuser, and I would rather you found them here than after the parcel arrives. The first is a low monthly number. If what you would state for your own spending is under about ₹240 a month, the refilled reed setup at ₹242–₹331 is not a saving; it is a different purchase at a slightly higher price. There may still be good reasons to make it — something that runs unattended for weeks with no switch, a glass bottle rather than a canister — but saving money is not one of them, and I will not pretend otherwise to move a ₹749 bottle.

The second is a short horizon. The saving is back-loaded by construction: year one carries the glass and the reeds, year two carries only oil. If you are three months from a move, or still testing whether you like living with home fragrance, the number that applies is the first-year one — ₹416 to ₹535 a month — not the ₹242 that appears once you are refilling. Judge the purchase on the horizon you actually have. If it is short, a jar candle at ₹379 is a much smaller commitment, though it runs roughly 15–18 hours in total rather than six weeks and so answers a different question.

The third is wanting something a reed diffuser is not designed to do. If what you want is a room scented at a chosen moment — on when guests arrive, off when you sleep — no arithmetic on ₹749 helps, because a reed diffuser has no on switch and never will. That is the Sukoon at ₹1,899: 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, remote, steady/2H/4H timers, three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances in the box. Bought for control, not strength — and not cheaper, since the water-based fragrance is a consumable at 15ml ₹299, 100ml ₹999 or 300ml ₹1,799 on top of the machine. Whichever way you go: a reed diffuser adds a fragrance alongside whatever is already in your air. It does not clean, purify or filter anything, and removes or neutralises nothing. If a room smells of something you want gone, the order is find the source, ventilate or extract, then add fragrance.

You brought one number to this page and I brought the other. If yours is smaller than mine, the arithmetic has spoken and I am not going to argue with it.

Part four — what to order once the sum comes out

Seven readers, seven monthly figures of their own. Two are told to buy nothing; the starred row is the commonest place this page lands.

The purchase, once your own number is on the table
What to order, what it totals, and what to leave alone
Where your own figure puts you What I would order The total, with the working What I would not order, and why
Above ₹300 a month, one room, staying put ★ Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749, then a refill ₹749 + ₹2,399 = ₹3,148 over 9.5–13 months Not two bottles at once — you have one room and one nose in it
Above ₹300, and you hate reordering Evening Calm 130ml ₹1,299 ₹1,299 across 14–18 weeks ≈ ₹289–₹372 a month Not for reach — 130ml buys weeks, never metres
Above ₹600, two rooms you actually use Day & Night duo ₹1,498 then a 500ml ₹1,498 + ₹3,499 = ₹4,997 for two rooms Not two 130ml — start at 50ml and learn your own weeks first
Between ₹240 and ₹300 a month Whichever scent you want, or nothing ₹749–₹849 · the sums are level, so cost is silent Not a duo. At this number, one room is the honest scope
Under ₹240 a month Nothing, on cost grounds. Keep your money — Not a 130ml, not a duo, not a refill. The saving is not there
Under ₹240, but curious about fragrance A jar candle at ₹379 as a test ₹379 for roughly 15–18 hours of burn time Not a reed diffuser yet — settle the question before the outlay
You want it on and off at will Sukoon ₹1,899, for control ₹1,899 plus fragrance from ₹299 · 270–320 sq ft Not on cost — this is dearer, and honestly so
Honest notes for buyers: every rupee figure above is a SOSA price from the live store, a figure a reader states about their own spending, or arithmetic on those two with the working shown. No competing product or brand is named, priced or rated here, and no claim is made about how long anything other than a SOSA product lasts. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room; it does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, damp or smoke smells, reduce humidity, or change how anyone feels. Longevity figures — 6–8 weeks for 50ml, 14–18 for 130ml, 8–11 months for a 300ml refill, 14–18 for a 500ml — are typical ranges, not guarantees, and move with warmth, airflow and humidity as directions of effect rather than measured rates. Reed count is the volume control, bottle size the duration control. There is no 100ml reed diffuser; the sizes are 50ml and 130ml. Replacement reeds are not sold separately and refills are oil only. Reed oil never goes into a machine and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep bottles away from open flame and direct sunlight, on a tray, out of reach of children and pets. Made in Pune; free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA oil-only reed diffuser refill, 300ml at ₹2,399, roughly ₹7 to ₹8 per ml
The purchase that halves the monthly figure
SOSA reed diffuser refill · oil only ₹2,399 / 300ml
300ml runs roughly 8–11 months and 500ml at ₹3,499 runs roughly 14–18: about ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 for a fresh 50ml, because the fresh bottle also buys a glass vessel and six fibre reeds and the refill does not. That is the whole saving, and it exists only if you kept the vessel. Method: lift the reeds onto a paper towel, pour to the neck, return them, flip once so both ends are coated. Gloves on, tray underneath.

A note from Sonal

The first time somebody asked me this at a market stall in Pune I did what most founders do, which is start talking about quality. It is a bad answer to a costing question. She had come with a number in her head and she wanted to know whether mine was bigger or smaller, and I had given her adjectives. She bought nothing, quite rightly.

What I do now is write my side down and hand it over. ₹749, six to eight weeks, nothing else to add. Then ₹2,399 for three hundred millilitres of oil into a bottle you already own. Two numbers and a division, and the customer finishes the sentence. It converts less often than the adjectives did, and the people it converts do not come back disappointed.

I have also become firm about what I will not do, which is guess the other half. I do not know what is on your shelf or what it cost, and any figure I invented for it would be chosen to make mine look good. So the low-spend reader gets told to keep her money, in the second paragraph, in bold. That page loses a sale today and it is the one I would want written about me. Made in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What does a SOSA reed diffuser actually cost per month?
A 50ml at ₹749 runs 6–8 weeks, so ₹749 ÷ 1.8 months ≈ ₹416 at best and ₹749 ÷ 1.4 ≈ ₹535 at worst. Once refilling, ₹749 + ₹2,399 = ₹3,148 across roughly 9.5–13 months: ₹242–₹331 a month.
At what monthly figure does a reed diffuser become the cheaper habit?
Above roughly ₹300 a month of your own stated spending, if you intend to keep the vessel and refill. Above roughly ₹500 it is cheaper even buying a fresh bottle every time. Between ₹240 and ₹300 the two are close enough that cost should not decide it.
Why will you not tell me what my current room freshener costs?
Because I do not know, and any number I supplied would be one I had chosen to make my own look better. No competing product is named, priced or rated on this page. You bring your number; I have shown all of mine, with the divisions written out.
Is the 130ml better value than the 50ml?
Slightly, per week: ₹1,249 across 14–18 weeks is roughly ₹69–₹89 a week against ₹94–₹125 for a ₹749 50ml. But it is a duration purchase — at six reeds it fills the same room and simply does it for 14–18 weeks. Buy it to reorder less often, never to reach further.
Does the refill saving still apply if I lose the reeds?
Partly. The refill is oil only — no glass, no reeds — and replacement reeds are not sold separately, an honest gap in the range. If your reeds are darkened at the top and the level had stopped falling, they are finished, and a fresh bottle at ₹749–₹849 is the only way to obtain new fibre reeds. Keep the reeds from every bottle that empties cleanly and you will not meet this twice.

A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room. It does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, damp or smoke smells, reduce humidity, or change how anyone feels. A reed diffuser adds no moisture to the air; ultrasonic machines work by aerosolising water and therefore do. A persistent musty smell indicates moisture that needs finding and drying, and SOSA sells no dehumidifier or air purifier. Ventilate or extract first; add fragrance second. Evaporation rate rises with warmth and falls with humidity, and airflow carries scent away from the bottle — so performance varies with season, ventilation, ceiling height and room use; longevity figures are typical ranges, not guarantees. Not noticing a constant fragrance is ordinary olfactory adaptation; the reliable checks are leaving the room and returning, or asking someone who has just arrived. Strength figures are positions on SOSA’s own internal scale, not an industry standard.
