Step one
Measure the connected volume, not the living room
Take a tape and a piece of paper and walk the space, and follow one rule: include every area that has no closed door between it and the sitting area, and stop at the first door you would actually shut. A worked example from an ordinary flat. The living room measures 14 by 18, which is 252 sq ft. The dining area beyond it measures 10 by 12, which is 120 sq ft. Together that is 372 sq ft of connected floor. Under a 10 ft ceiling that is 372 x 10 = 3,720 cubic feet, and dividing by 35.3 gives about 105 cubic metres. If a passage of 4 by 12, which is 48 sq ft, also opens off it with no door, add that: 420 sq ft, 4,200 cubic feet, about 119 cubic metres. Most open-plan living and dining areas land between 300 and 450 sq ft, so between 3,000 and 4,500 cubic feet, or about 85 to 127 cubic metres. Ceiling height matters more than people expect, because it multiplies straight in: 400 sq ft at 12 ft is 4,800 cubic feet, about 136 cubic metres, and the same 400 sq ft under a double-height 18 ft ceiling is 7,200 cubic feet, about 204. Write your own number down. Everything after this is just matching it.

Step two
Match the machine to the number, including when that means the cheaper one
Now put your figure against the range. Between roughly 85 and 130 cubic metres, which covers the large majority of open-plan living and dining areas in Indian homes, an ultrasonic is the appropriate machine. Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, with no water and no dilution, that is the Safar. And if your living space is genuinely large or open-plan, that is the Vaayu, which I will happily tell you is far too much machine for a 10 by 12 bedroom.

How exactly do I calculate the connected volume of my open plan?
Measure each connected area separately, add the floor areas, then multiply the total by your ceiling height and divide by 35.3 for cubic metres. Worked through: a living room at 14 by 18 is 252 sq ft, a dining area at 10 by 12 is 120 sq ft, and a passage at 4 by 12 is 48 sq ft. If none of those has a door between them, that is 420 sq ft of connected floor. At a 10 ft ceiling it is 4,200 cubic feet, which is about 119 cubic metres. Include the kitchen only if there is genuinely no door, and remember that a running kitchen exhaust pulls air out of the whole connected volume while it works. Do not include bedrooms whose doors you shut, even if they are usually open, because the moment that door closes the machine cannot reach them. Should I buy one bigger machine or two smaller ones for an open plan?
For a single connected volume, one correctly sized machine near the middle usually beats two smaller ones at opposite ends. Two sources create two areas of higher concentration with a thinner stretch between them, which is the same shape problem two reed diffusers have, only with more mist. One machine placed at the junction of the living and dining zones has half the distance to cover in each direction, and the room's own currents do the rest. Two machines make sense in one specific case: when what looks like one space is really two volumes joined by a narrow neck, such as an L-shaped plan where a wall blocks air movement between the arms. If your plan has a pinch point like that, tell us on WhatsApp with rough dimensions, because the answer genuinely changes and we would rather you did not buy the wrong configuration.
Will a 6 litre Megh make my open-plan room too humid?
Tank size sets how long it can run without refilling, not how much moisture it puts into the air per hour, so a 6 litre Megh at Rs 3,499 is not automatically more humid than a smaller ultrasonic. What decides humidity is the output setting and how long you run it. In a coastal or monsoon-humid city, run any ultrasonic on a lower setting and in cycles rather than continuously, and stop if surfaces feel damp. In a dry inland winter the added moisture is often welcome. If humidity is a genuine concern in your home, or if your water is hard enough that white dust on the console would annoy you, then waterless is the honest direction to look, and that means the Safar at Rs 3,999 for a personal space or the Vaayu at Rs 11,999 for a large connected one. Where is the single best place to put a diffuser in an open-plan space?
Near the middle of the connected volume, at roughly table height, away from the three things that remove air. In a living and dining run, the junction between the two zones is usually ideal, because the fragrance then has half the length to travel in each direction. Table height beats the floor, because scented air rises and starting at ankle level wastes a good part of the room's height. Keep it out of the direct downdraught of a ceiling fan, which thins the output rather than helping it, off the line of an AC vent, and away from a balcony door where air is leaving. If your kitchen opens into the space and the exhaust runs while you cook, put the machine at the far end from the kitchen rather than near it. Then run it in cycles: half an hour before people arrive is worth more than four hours of continuous running that your own nose has stopped registering.
My open plan connects to a staircase and an upper floor. Does that change things?
It changes it significantly, because a staircase is a chimney for scented air. Warm air rises, so an open stairwell continuously carries fragrance from your ground-floor volume up to the landing, which both enlarges the volume you are scenting and means a proportion of what you release never stays where you wanted it. Add the stairwell and the upper landing to your connected floor area when you calculate, and if the ceiling is double height over the living area, use the real height rather than 10 ft, since 400 sq ft at 18 ft is 7,200 cubic feet, about 204 cubic metres, against 4,000 cubic feet or about 113 at 10 ft.
