There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.

How do I know what my house smells like if I cannot smell it myself?
You outsource the judgement, because your own nose has been disqualified by living there. Two methods work. Ask the first person through the door, in the first thirty seconds, what they notice - and ask it in a way that gets a real answer, because everybody's instinct is to say it smells lovely. Asking what do you notice, honestly, is better than asking does it smell nice. The people worth asking most are the ones who arrive irregularly: a cousin visiting after two months, a friend who has never been, anybody delivering something. The second method is to leave and return. Go out for ten minutes, get properly into outside air, and walk back in through your own front door concentrating on the first breath only. Should I light a candle or spray something just before guests arrive?
It is the most common move and it is the wrong one, though the instinct behind it is right. Something sprayed or lit twenty minutes before the doorbell produces air that is actively scenting rather than settled: it is uneven, strongest near where it was applied, and it announces itself as something done for the occasion. Guests do not consciously analyse this, but the difference between a house that smells composed and a house that smells recently sprayed is one people register instantly, because we have all been in both. The alternative is not more effort, it is earlier effort, done once: a machine on a schedule that has held a gentle even level since the afternoon. Keep the candle if you love it - light it as an evening object in the living room, for the look and the ritual, rather than as your fragrance strategy at the door.
My entrance opens straight into a double-height hall. Does that change anything?
It changes the arithmetic rather than the approach, and it usually improves the moment. Volume, not floor area, is what you fill: a 600 sq ft hall at a 10 ft ceiling is 6,000 cubic feet, about 170 cubic metres, and the same footprint at 20 ft is 12,000 cubic feet, about 340 cubic metres. So a double-height entrance counts roughly twice, and you should add it to your connected total at its real height. The placement rule then does the heavy lifting for you: put the unit low, at console or floor height, because warm air rises and convection will carry the fragrance up through the void on its own. A unit placed high mostly scents the ceiling. Double-height entrances are also the closest a home comes to a hotel lobby, which is precisely why the effect lands so well there when the level is kept gentle.
How strong should it be at the moment somebody walks in?
Below the level at which a guest can name it. The target is that somebody steps in and thinks the house feels warm, or clean, or expensive, and does not think about fragrance at all - and if they do comment, it should be a question rather than a wince.
