Where exactly should I place the unit so the fragrance goes upstairs? Four constraints, and one spot usually satisfies all of them. Low, at roughly console or shelf height rather than on a high ledge, because a unit near the ceiling scents the ceiling beside it and never enters the current. The physics
Warm air rises, and your stairwell is the shaft it rises through
Air expands as it warms, which makes it less dense than the cooler air around it, which makes it rise. Every house has that gradient - a ground floor warmed through the day by sun, cooking, appliances and people, and cooler air arriving to replace what has lifted - and every house with a staircase has a shaft for it to move through. The result is a slow, continuous upward current in the stair void, running whether or not anyone is thinking about fragrance. Cold-air nebulising matters here for one reason: it breaks fragrance into a very fine airborne dispersion that stays suspended for a long time rather than settling near the machine, so it behaves like part of the air rather than like something sprayed into it. Put that dispersion into the bottom of the current and it goes where the current goes. This explains a thing owners often misread - the upper floor frequently smells strongest in the early evening, after a warm day, when the gradient is at its most active, and faintest on a cool morning. That is the system working with the weather, not a fault to be corrected with a stronger setting. Four rules, one spot, and the mistake almost everybody makes
Low. The limits
Four things stop the climb, and only three of them are fixable for free
Diagnose in this order before spending anything. One: the draught. Air-conditioning is the biggest single interference - a split unit blowing across the machine cancels the climb, and a hard-running split on the landing cools air that then sinks, setting up a downward flow against the current. Move the machine; try an earlier start. Two: height. If the unit is above head height, bring it down. Three: the clock. Convection is slow, so a block that starts when people walk in leaves the landing an hour behind all evening; move the start into the mid-afternoon and change nothing else. Four: a door at the top of the stairs. This is the one that hardware cannot fix from below. An enclosed stairwell with a door removes the chimney entirely - there is no continuous current between the floors, so a ground-floor machine holds the ground floor and nothing above it, and no setting changes that. Then there is the limit that applies even when everything is right: the current serves the landing, not the rooms off it. A 250 sq ft bedroom at a 10 ft ceiling is about 71m³ of sealed air behind a shut door. Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. How do I test whether the fragrance is actually reaching upstairs?
Use your nose properly, which means using it fresh. You will be nose-blind to your own house within days of installing anything, so judging the landing at ten at night after living in the air since six tells you nothing. The honest test is to leave the house for a few hours, come back in and walk straight up the stairs without stopping, and register the first breath on the landing. Do it on a warm evening and again on a cool morning, because the gradient that drives the whole mechanism varies with the weather and the house will genuinely differ. Better still, ask somebody who has just arrived - a guest, a family member returning from work - what they notice upstairs, and believe their answer over your own. If the landing reads as gentler than the hall, that is correct. If it reads as nothing at all, work through the placement and schedule checks before considering hardware. Does an open landing work better than a closed corridor upstairs?
Considerably better, and it is worth knowing which one you have before you set expectations. An open landing or gallery that looks down into the void is part of the connected volume, so it receives the current directly and reads as a softer version of the hall below. A closed corridor at the top of the stairs - walls on both sides, doors along it - receives much less, because the air has to turn out of the shaft and into a narrow space with nowhere to go. Do ceiling fans help or hurt the climb?
They generally help, provided they are on a low speed. A fine airborne dispersion is carried by whatever gentle circulation exists in a room, so a slow-moving fan distributes the register more evenly across a wide ground floor and keeps it from pooling near the machine. What you want to avoid is anything forceful and directional: a fan on maximum, or a pedestal fan aimed across the unit, behaves like an air-conditioning draught and throws everything to one side of the room. The same logic applies upstairs, where a slow fan on the landing helps mix what arrives rather than blowing it back down the stairs. And if the top of the house is very warm under a pitched roof, a slow fan brings some of that trapped warm air back down into the space people use, which is useful in itself.
Should I leave the stairwell window open to help air move?
Not while the machine is running, and this is one of the few genuine conflicts in the method. An open window in the stair void or on the half-landing vents the current outdoors, so you lose upward distribution at exactly the point you were relying on it. That does not make ventilation optional - it is the first and most important thing in any honest home-scenting method, and it should never be skipped. Simply separate the two activities on the clock: open the house properly during the day, cross-ventilate so the air is genuinely replaced rather than recirculated, then close up and let the schedule run in the afternoon and evening. Air-conditioning recirculates rather than replaces air, so daily ventilation still matters in a conditioned house, and scent finishes clean air rather than substituting for it.
Is there any way to get fragrance into a bedroom without putting something in it?
Only ductwork, and only if the house has it. A closed door is a barrier to airflow, so no standalone machine at any price and no setting on any machine crosses it - which is why we keep saying it rather than letting the coverage number imply otherwise.
