Founder Diaries · Diwali Gifting · Repeat Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
There are people you will be buying for every Diwali for the rest of your life — a mother-in-law, a family that hosts you, a friend whose house you have been going to since school. Five years is long enough that repetition becomes obvious and short enough that you can actually plan it. Below is a genuine five-year sequence: five real products at real prices, in a deliberate order, each with a stated reason and a stated precondition. It is not five gifts chosen in advance. It is one opening move and four decisions, and every one of the four is made on what the previous year told you. The sequence also has an end, which is the part most gifting advice leaves out.
Quick answers — read this first
The sequence, in one line: year one Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 · year two Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 · year three Fresh & Grounded duo ₹1,548 · year four 300ml oil refill ₹2,399 · year five Sukoon ₹1,899.

What it costs across five Diwalis: 799 + 799 = 1,598; + 1,548 = 3,146; + 2,399 = 5,545; + 1,899 = ₹7,444 in total, or just under ₹1,500 a year averaged out. Free shipping above ₹499 applies to every one of those orders.

The shape is breadth, then depth, then format. Two single bottles for two rooms, then a duo for two more, then oil to keep the whole set running, then a machine when the largest room has outgrown what six reeds can hold.

Year four has the hardest precondition. The refill is oil only — no vessel, no reeds — and SOSA does not sell replacement reeds separately. Only advance to it if you have seen the vessels kept, and send a 50ml alongside so fresh reeds arrive with the oil.
The short answer
Short answer: hold one category for five years and move through it in a fixed order — a first bottle, a second bottle for a different room, a two-bottle duo, a year of oil, and finally a format change. Each step is conditional on the previous gift having been used, which you check by looking at the bottle rather than by asking. If a step's condition is not met, you stay where you are or stop; you never skip ahead.
What the product is: a reed diffuser is a glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds standing in it — the oil climbs the fibre and evaporates off the exposed length. No flame, no socket, nothing to operate beyond flipping the reeds weekly. 50ml runs 6–8 weeks; 130ml runs 14–18. Five scents exist and no more, which is precisely why the sequence is five years long and not ten.
Straight answer
How do you give the same person something different for five Diwalis in a row?
1. Year one — Garden Bloom 50ml, ₹799. Rose and night-blooming jasmine, the least polarising thing in the range. The opening year is not about generosity; it is a test of whether this household uses ambient fragrance at all, and a test should be run with the safest instrument available.

2. Year two — Evening Calm 50ml, ₹799, for a different room. Condition: last year's bottle was actually emptied. Lavender and chamomile is the softest composition we make, which suits a bedroom or a reading corner when year one went into a hall. A second bottle in a second room is the only way to raise the total fragrance in a home — a bigger bottle in the same corner buys weeks, not reach.

3. Year three — Fresh & Grounded duo, ₹1,548. Condition: two bottles have now run through and neither was left standing full. Morning Freshness for a bathroom or kitchen doorway, Mountain Breeze for a study or home office — two registers the first two years did not cover, and the visible step up in scale that a third year can carry.

4. Year four — 300ml oil refill, ₹2,399. Condition: you have seen the glass vessels kept. By now they own four, and 300ml is roughly ₹8 per ml against ₹15–17 at 50ml, running 8–11 months. The refill contains no vessel and no reeds, and reeds are not sold separately — so send a 50ml with it if you can: ₹2,399 + ₹749 = ₹3,148.

5. Year five — Sukoon, ₹1,899. Condition: their main living space is a large open volume where reeds visibly under-deliver, or they have said they want scent for an evening rather than constantly. 270–320 sq ft, remote and timers, three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances in the box. This is a format change, not a stronger diffuser.

6. The whole sequence costs ₹7,444. 799 + 799 + 1,548 + 2,399 + 1,899, which is arithmetic on listed prices rather than a package — SOSA sells no gift set and no bundle. Averaged, that is just under ₹1,500 a Diwali.

7. Every step is conditional, and stopping is a legitimate outcome. If year one is still three-quarters full a year later, there is no year two in this category. That is the sequence working, not failing.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: Garden Bloom ₹799 → Evening Calm ₹799 → Fresh & Grounded duo ₹1,548 → refill ₹2,399 → Sukoon ₹1,899. Total ₹7,444 across five Diwalis. Breadth, then depth, then format — and each year advances only if the previous bottle was actually used up.
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser 50ml at ₹799, year one of a five-year gifting sequence
Year one of five
SOSA Garden Bloom · British rose & night-blooming jasmine ₹799 / 50ml
Everything downstream depends on this bottle, so it should be the one least likely to be disliked. Garden Bloom is floral without being heavy and sits at 8.9 on SOSA's own internal strength scale at six reeds — our scale, not an industry standard and not a quality ranking. Year one is a question, not a statement: does this household use ambient fragrance? The bottle answers it over the following twelve months, and the answer is what buys year two. Refillable glass, six fibre reeds, 6–8 weeks. 130ml is ₹1,299.

Part one — the three rules the sequence runs on

A five-year plan sounds like something you write down once and execute. It is the opposite. The value of a sequence is not that it removes decisions but that it makes each year's decision small and answerable. Three rules do that work.

1
RULE ONE · EARN EACH STEP
A step taken without evidence is the same mistake, larger
Each year in this sequence costs more than the last until year four. That is only defensible if the previous year was used. A 50ml at six reeds empties over 6–8 weeks, so a year later there are only two states worth noticing: empty, or meaningfully full. Empty buys the next step. Full ends the sequence in this category — not because the scent was wrong, but because a bottle standing in dead air or in a household indifferent to fragrance will do the same thing again at ₹1,548. Nothing about a duo fixes a placement problem. If you find a full bottle in year two, hand over a jar candle at ₹379 and let the sequence quietly end there.
The check: look at the bottle on a normal visit. You are not inspecting anything; you are reading whether there is a next year.
2
RULE TWO · BREADTH BEFORE DEPTH
More rooms first, more oil second, a different machine last
SOSA Fresh and Grounded reed diffuser duo, Morning Freshness and Mountain BreezeFresh & Grounded₹1,548 · 2 × 50mlThe order matters more than the items. Output per bottle is fixed by evaporation off six reeds, so the only way to raise the total fragrance in a home is another source somewhere else — which is why years one to three add rooms rather than volume. A 130ml is not a stronger 50ml; it lasts 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 and projects the same. Once three or four rooms are covered, more bottles stop adding anything, and the useful gift becomes oil to keep the existing ones running — that is year four. Only after all of that does a format change make sense, and only for a specific reason: an open living-dining beyond roughly 250–300 sq ft, or a wish for scent on demand rather than constantly. Two scents sharing a space need a common note; Morning Freshness and Mountain Breeze meet on green eucalyptus.
The order: rooms, then oil, then format. Never bigger as a substitute for more.
3
RULE THREE · THE YEAR-FOUR PRECONDITION
The refill is the best value in the range and the fussiest gift in it
Year four is where sequences go wrong, because the arithmetic is so attractive that people stop checking. 300ml at ₹2,399 is about ₹8 per ml against ₹15–17 at 50ml, and runs 8–11 months. But it is oil only: no glass vessel, no reeds — and SOSA does not sell replacement reeds as a separate item. That is an honest gap in the range. Fibre reeds fill up over months of use and our guidance is to refresh them every few months; the only route to fresh reeds is a new bottle, which arrives with six. So year four has two conditions rather than one: the vessels must have been kept, and the reeds in them must not be a year old. The version I would send is the refill plus a 50ml — ₹2,399 + ₹749 = ₹3,148 — which also fixes year four's other problem, that a plain bottle of oil is a poor thing to open in front of people.

Part two — the five years, laid out

Here is the sequence with its conditions attached. The column that matters most is the third one: what must already be true before you advance. If it is not true, you repeat the previous year with a different scent, or you stop. Prices are SOSA's listed prices; there is no bundle and no set behind any of this.

The five-year sequence
What to give, what it costs, and what has to be true first
Year What you give Price What must already be true What to look for before next Diwali
Year one ★ Garden Bloom 50ml — the safest opener in the range ₹799 Nothing. This is the test, and it is meant to be cheap Whether the bottle emptied, and which room it ended up in
Year two Evening Calm 50ml for a second room — the softest composition ₹799 Year one ran out. If it did not, the sequence ends here Whether both bottles ran, and whether either moved rooms
Year three Fresh & Grounded duo — bright and dry woody, two more rooms ₹1,548 Two bottles have now been used through, neither left standing Whether the glass vessels are being kept rather than discarded
Year four 300ml oil refill, ideally with a 50ml alongside for fresh reeds ₹2,399, or ₹2,399 + ₹749 = ₹3,148 You have seen the vessels kept — the refill includes neither vessel nor reeds Whether the largest room is visibly under-served by six reeds
Year five Sukoon — 270–320 sq ft, remote and timers, three 15ml fragrances included ₹1,899 A large open living-dining, or a stated wish for scent on demand Nothing. This is the end of the ladder, and it is meant to be
The honest caveat: ₹799 + ₹799 + ₹1,548 + ₹2,399 + ₹1,899 = ₹7,444 across five Diwalis, which is arithmetic on listed prices and not a package — SOSA sells no gift set, no hamper and no multi-year plan, and prices can change. Nor is the order sacred: a household that never uses a study does not need Mountain Breeze, and a flat with no room over 250 sq ft never reaches year five. Treat the shape as the advice and the specific bottles as replaceable.

Years one, four and five of the sequence
The SOSA principle
A sequence is not a plan you commit to. It is a default you can deviate from cheaply, which is the only kind of plan that survives five years.
Every step here is conditional, and two of the five conditions are things you can only learn by looking at last year's bottle on an ordinary visit.

Part three — a smaller version, and where it ends

₹7,444 over five years is not a small commitment, and for a great many recurring names it is simply the wrong scale. The shape of the sequence matters more than its price, and it runs perfectly well a tier lower. A modest version: year one a jar candle at ₹379, year two a candle two-pack at ₹664, year three the first reed diffuser at ₹749, year four a second scent at ₹799, year five a 130ml at ₹1,299. That is 379 + 664 = 1,043; + 749 = 1,792; + 799 = 2,591; + 1,299 = ₹3,890 across five Diwalis, and it has exactly the same property: five different objects, one coherent direction, no year repeating the last. The only thing it lacks is the machine at the top, which most households do not need anyway.

The larger question is where any of this genuinely stops. Past three or four reed bottles in an ordinary Indian flat, more bottles add nothing — the rooms that suit a diffuser already have one, and the remaining spaces are kitchens and bathrooms where the honest answer during a week of cooking is ventilation rather than more fragrance. A reed diffuser adds scent to a room; it does not clean air, and it does not remove a cooking or smoke smell that is already there. So the ladder has a real top, and I would rather name it than sell past it. Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest step beyond reeds because it does something reeds cannot: scent on demand, with a timer, across 270–320 sq ft. The Megh at ₹3,499 is not a bigger version of that — 6L for long runtime at around 215 sq ft, a runtime and humidity machine rather than a coverage upgrade. The Vaayu at ₹11,999 is a commercial cold-air unit and absurd in a flat.

One more piece of honesty about the direction of travel. It is tempting to read a rising sequence as a rising relationship, and to feel that a flat year is a message. It is not. A line that holds steady at ₹799 for five years is a perfectly complete gift and always was; the reason to advance is that the household has visibly absorbed the previous year, not that the affection has increased. If you cannot see evidence, repeat the tier with a scent they have not had. Of the five, only Fresh Brew is genuinely divisive — warm Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla, the strongest thing in the range — so keep it for a year when you know their taste rather than a year you are guessing.

Five years of gifts is not a ladder you owe someone. It is a shape that saves you from starting over, and it should be as easy to leave as to continue.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — when the sequence breaks

Five years is long enough that something will change: a move, a birth, a household that turns out not to want any of this. Here is what each of those looks like from the outside, and what to do at the next Diwali rather than pressing on with the plan.

Recovering a broken sequence
Six ways it goes wrong, and the move that fixes each
What went wrong How you notice What to do instead Cost
Year one was never used ★ The bottle is half or more full a year later End the sequence in this category. A mug ₹474 or a trinket dish ₹664 ₹474–₹664
They moved to a much smaller flat One room, no spare shelf, everything visible Stay at one 50ml, forever. Evening Calm ₹799 is the gentlest in a small space ₹799
There is a newborn or a crawling child in the house Obvious on any visit Pause the reed line — a glass bottle of oil at low height is the wrong object. A mug ₹474 instead ₹474
They started buying their own fragrance mid-sequence Bottles you did not give, anywhere in the house Skip ahead: go straight to the 300ml refill ₹2,399 if the vessels are SOSA ₹2,399
The vessels were thrown away before year four No glass on the shelf, only the memory of it Do not send oil. A Warmth & Bloom duo ₹1,598 restarts the set with fresh reeds ₹1,598
You missed a year entirely You are the only person who noticed Resume where you left off. Do not compensate with a bigger step Unchanged
Honest notes for buyers: all totals here are arithmetic on listed prices — ₹7,444 for the full sequence, ₹3,890 for the smaller one — not quotations or packages. SOSA sells no gift card, gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set, and publishes no bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity and no lead time; larger or repeat orders should be discussed through the contact page before committing, and I cannot promise any delivery timing. The least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749. Refills are oil only, with no vessel and no reeds, and replacement reeds are not sold separately — never plan a gift around buying reeds on their own. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard. Free shipping starts at ₹499. Fragrance oil is flammable: keep any bottle well away from diyas, candles and open flame. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room; it does not clean air or remove cooking or smoke smells. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser at ₹1,899, year five of a gifting sequence
Year five — and the top of the ladder
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser ₹1,899 / 500ml
The last step exists because reeds have a real ceiling, and pretending otherwise would mean selling a fifth bottle into a home that does not need one. Sukoon covers 270–320 sq ft, runs 16–18 hours on low, and comes with a remote, steady and 2H/4H timers, and three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances. Its advantage over reeds is control, not power — scent for an evening rather than constantly. The water-based Hotel Collection goes in this and never into a reed bottle; reed oil never goes into a machine.

A note from Sonal

I built this sequence backwards, from a complaint. A customer wrote to say she had given the same family a diffuser three years running and felt she was repeating herself, and asked whether we had anything new. We did not have anything new. We had four scents she had not used and a refill she had not thought of, and the reason she could not see them is that she was looking for novelty rather than for a direction.

The ladder above is the direction. Rooms first, because that is the only thing that actually changes how much fragrance is in a house. Oil next, because by then the vessels exist and the cheapest fragrance in India per millilitre is a refill for a bottle you already own. A machine last, and only for a room that has told you it needs one. It happens to be a good commercial ladder, and I would rather say that plainly than pretend it is only advice.

What I will not do is tell you that five years of this will mean something to anybody. I have no way of knowing whether a gift is remembered, and pages that promise that are guessing with your money. What I can give you is a shape, five real prices, the conditions under which each step is honest, and a clear statement of where the range stops. Everything is made in Pune in small batches, and part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run the sequence in a different order?
Yes, with one exception. Rooms should come before oil, because a refill is only useful once there are vessels to fill, and the machine should come last because it answers a problem the earlier years diagnose. Within that, swap scents freely — a household with no study has no use for Mountain Breeze, and a home that cooks constantly will get more from Morning Freshness near a doorway.
What if they only ever use one room?
Then the sequence is shorter and cheaper, which is a good outcome. Year two becomes a different scent for the same room rather than a second bottle, year three a 130ml at ₹1,299 so it runs 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8, and year four the refill if the vessel is kept. There is no year five, because a single room never reaches the point where a machine is the honest answer.
Is the refill really worth giving as a gift?
As value, yes — 300ml at ₹2,399 is roughly ₹8 per ml against ₹15–17 at 50ml and runs 8–11 months. As an object to open, it is plain: a bottle of oil with no vessel and no reeds, and reeds are not sold separately. Give it where the recipient understands what it is, and pair it with a 50ml (₹2,399 + ₹749 = ₹3,148) so that fresh reeds arrive with the oil.
Should the fifth year be a bigger diffuser instead of a machine?
No. A 130ml carries more oil and therefore lasts longer, but at six reeds it projects into the room at the same level — size buys duration, not reach. If the largest room genuinely under-delivers, that is the format's ceiling, and a Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the answer. The Megh at ₹3,499 costs more and covers less, at around 215 sq ft.
What happens in year six?
Nothing, ideally. The sequence is designed to finish rather than to climb indefinitely, and after year five the sensible pattern is to return to the base — a 50ml in whichever scent they have not had recently, or a refill when the oil runs down. A gifting relationship that has to escalate every year eventually breaks, and stopping the climb deliberately is much easier than stopping it in a panic.
