Room size decides how much output you need and occupancy decides how strong it should feel, and confusing the two is why hallways end up timid and living rooms end up exhausting.
Quick answers — read this first
How strong should home fragrance be? Set by how long people stay. A hallway passed through in seconds can be relatively present. A living room occupied for hours must be low. A bedroom lower still and switched off before sleep. A room where somebody works all day is lowest and needs their consent.
Is there a standard dose? Three to six drops in a full tank, by room size: two to three in a small room, three in a bedroom, four to five in a living room, five to six on a large open floor. Halve everything in summer.
Why do hallways end up too weak? Because people set them by their own perception after being at home all evening, when a visitor arrives with a fresh nose. A hallway can usually be set lower than instinct suggests and still land perfectly.
The short answer
Short answer: room size decides how much output you need; occupancy decides how strong it should feel. Passed through in seconds can be relatively present; occupied for hours must be low; slept in is lower still and switched off before sleep; worked in by others is lowest and needs consent. Doses: two to three drops small room, three bedroom, four to five living room, five to six large floor, halved in summer.
The pick: the Day & Night reed duo (₹1,498) as the whole-home start, or single signatures from ₹749.
Shop: SOSA reed diffusers and the Hotel Collection scenting range.
A home's fragrance is a system, not a product: honest air beneath, one scent family expressed room by room, occasions layered on top, and consistency held for years. That is what guests experience as "your home always smells incredible" - and what the household experiences as home.
Two questions, answered separately. 1. How much output. That is room volume against unit: a Boond (₹799) for a bedroom, a Sukoon (₹1,799) for a living room, a Megh (₹3,499) for an open floor. 2. How strong it should feel. That is occupancy. A hallway is experienced for three seconds by somebody with a fresh nose, so it can carry a clear register at three or four drops. A living room holds people for hours who will adapt within ten minutes and then keep sitting there, so four or five drops in a larger unit, run in cycles. A bedroom is slept in, so three drops, before bed, switched off. A study or cabin where somebody works all day is the lowest of all and needs their agreement. 3. Season. Halve everything through summer, because warm air raises volatility. 4. Register weight adjusts it. Heavier compositions need fewer drops than light ones for the same perceived level; bottles from ₹299 in the collection. 5. The check. Whatever the numbers say, the test is somebody walking in from outside. If they compliment the house and never mention fragrance, it is right. SOSA's own interpretations; not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: room size sets the output, occupancy sets the strength. Seconds can be present, hours must be low, sleeping lowest, and somebody else's workplace lowest with consent.
The whole-home start most households choose: the Day & Night duo - Morning Freshness for the day's bright spaces and Evening Calm for the bedroom - at ₹1,498, flame-free and plug-free. Add a mist diffuser with the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) for hosting hours.

Strength is a function of how long people stay
Two questions people merge into one.
Why this works
Set by occupancy
Start where most households start: the Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 - or a single signature reed from ₹749.
Most guidance in this category talks about square footage and stops there, which explains a persistent pattern: hallways set too timidly and living rooms set too heavily. A hallway is a short, high-attention encounter with a fresh nose and can carry a clear register without ever becoming tiring, because nobody stands in it. A living room is a long, low-attention occupation, so the same level that felt right for three seconds becomes wearing by the second hour. Adding duration to the calculation immediately corrects both errors, and it costs nothing but a moment of thought about who is in the room and for how long.
Tip: hallways are set too timidly and living rooms too heavily, and duration is the reason for both.
2
Rooms other people work in
A different rule entirely
There is one category where the answer is not a number but a conversation. A room somebody else spends their working hours in - a home office used by another member of the family, a kitchen or utility area where domestic staff work for long stretches, a study belonging to somebody who did not buy the diffuser - is not the buyer's to set. The register there should be low and neutral or absent, and it should stop for anybody who says it affects them, for their area, without a reason. This is the one place in a home where consent matters more than preference, and it is the one most often overlooked.
3
Sleep gets the lowest setting
And no claims attached
A bedroom is the smallest, most enclosed, most textile-heavy room in the house, occupied for the longest unbroken stretch by somebody who cannot easily leave and may be sharing with somebody of a different tolerance. Every one of those factors points the same way: three drops, a short run before bed, and the unit switched off rather than left going. There is no benefit to running one while you are asleep, and there is a cost in accumulation and added moisture. And nothing here makes any claim about sleep quality, which is a subject for a doctor rather than a fragrance.
Tip: there is no benefit to a diffuser running while you are asleep, and two real costs.
The SOSA principle
Room size decides how much output. Occupancy decides how strong it should feel.
Merging the two is why hallways are timid and living rooms are exhausting.

Nobody stands in a hallway - which is exactly why it can carry more than a living room can.

The SOSA whole-home edit
Whichever transformation you are building toward, every SOSA product here is alcohol-free and made in small batches in India. Reeds run flame-free and plug-free in any room; the ultrasonic mist diffusers carry the Hotel Collection through living spaces and hosting hours; and the Vaayu machine holds large open homes on a schedule. One family, room by room - and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full edit.
The SOSA whole-home edit
One family, every room - essential to luxury, matched to how you live
A note on the two systems: SOSA reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil - no flame, plug or water, safe in any room including nurseries' adjacent spaces at gentle placement. The Hotel Collection is a separate water-based fragrance for ultrasonic (mist) diffusers - not reed oil, and not interchangeable. Fragrance crowns a cared-for home; it does not substitute for ventilation and cleaning. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
Nobody actually buys a diffuser. In ten years of making fragrance I have never once met a customer who wanted a bottle with sticks in it. What they want is the moment someone walks into their home, pauses, and says "wow - it smells incredible in here." They want their children to grow up with a smell that will mean home for the rest of their lives. They want the house to feel finished.
That is why I compose scents the way I do - not as products but as the missing layer of a home: the fresh note at the door that says this house is kept, the warm one in the living room that says you are welcome, the lavender in the bedroom that says the day is over. One family of scents, held for years, becomes something no decor budget can buy: identity.
Everything here is alcohol-free, flame-free where it matters, and made in small batches in India. And a part of every order supports girl-child education - because a home's best fragrance is what it gives back.
Frequently asked questions
How strong should each room be?
By occupancy. A hallway can be relatively present, a living room must be low, a bedroom lower and switched off, and a room somebody works in lowest of all with their consent.
What are the doses?
Two to three drops in a small room, three in a bedroom, four to five in a living room, five to six on a large open floor. Halve in summer.
Why is my hallway too weak?
Because you set it after being home all evening, while a visitor arrives with a fresh nose. It can be lower than instinct suggests and still land.
Should a bedroom run overnight?
No. There is no benefit while you are asleep, and there is accumulation and added moisture as a cost.
What is the final check?
Somebody walking in from outside. A compliment about the house, with no mention of fragrance, means it is right. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory signals reach the brain's emotion and memory centres (amygdala, hippocampus) ahead of conscious processing, which is why scents trigger emotional responses and autobiographical memories with unusual speed and durability; a home's ambient scent influences mood, comfort and social judgments at moderate, replicated effect sizes, with gentle intensities outperforming strong ones and no fragrance effect surviving unmanaged odour sources. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free fragrance oil with natural rattan reeds (no flame, electricity or water), from ₹749, lasting roughly 6-10 weeks per fill; refills from ₹2,399. SOSA ultrasonic (mist) diffusers - Boond (300ml, ₹799), Sukoon (500ml, ₹1,799), Megh (6L, ₹3,499) - use a separate water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299); this is not reed diffuser oil. SOSA Vaayu is a waterless cold-air machine with Bluetooth app and timer, ~1000m³ coverage, ₹11,999. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Cruelty-free, vegan, made in India.
