Founder Diaries · Thinking-of-You & Cheer-Up Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated September 2026
You are trying to price something that has no date behind it, which means the usual anchors are gone: there is no birthday to match, no festival rate, nobody else's gift to sit alongside. That is the actual constraint, and it is why this feels harder than it should. Here is the answer with the reasoning attached: spend between ₹379 and ₹1,000, treat ₹1,000 as a ceiling rather than a target, and go above it only for one of three specific reasons set out below.
SOSA Adaa attar, bergamot cardamom and jasmine sambac, Rs 379
SOSA Adaa attar · bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac ₹379 →
The floor of the band, and often the right answer in it. SOSA Adaa, ₹379 in 3ml - bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk, alcohol-free oil rolled on rather than sprayed. It is the cheapest complete gift SOSA sells, which makes it the point where the price stops being interesting and the object starts being the message.
Quick answers — read this first
How much should you spend on a gift when there is no occasion? Between ₹379 and ₹1,000, with ₹1,000 as the ceiling. That band buys a real gift - a candle at ₹399, a 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399, a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849, a Woodenwick candle at ₹999 - without the number itself becoming the message.

Why is there a ceiling at all? Because with no date to explain it, the price is the only information the recipient has about what the gift means. Below ₹1,000 it reads as a thought. Above it, the object starts asking a question the person then has to answer: what is this for, what does he want, what am I meant to do about it. On an ordinary day that is a mild puzzle. On a difficult one it is a task.

How little is too little? Below ₹379 nothing standalone exists at SOSA. The ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is fuel for an ultrasonic machine, and wax melts at ₹499 need a ₹599 ceramic burner. Both are components. The floor for a real gift is a 3ml attar at ₹379 or a candle at ₹399.
The short answer
Short answer: Spend between Rs 379 and Rs 1,000, and treat Rs 1,000 as a ceiling rather than a target. With no date attached, the price is the only information the recipient has about what the gift means, so the number is doing more work than the object. Go above the ceiling only for a refill they need, a shared gift from several people, or something they actually asked for.
The pick: A 3ml attar at ₹379 or a candle at ₹399 at the floor; a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 at the top of the sensible band.
Why: Everything in that range is small enough that the object is the message and the price is not, which is the entire point of giving something on a day nothing was expected.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
How much should you spend on a gift when there is no occasion?
Rs 379 to ₹1,000, and treat ₹1,000 as a ceiling. The reasoning is worth more than the number. A gift on a birthday is priced by convention, so nobody has to interpret it. A gift on an ordinary Tuesday has no convention to hide behind, which means the price is the only fact the recipient has to work from - and they will work from it, because everybody does. Under ₹1,000 the object carries the message: a 3ml attar at ₹379, a candle at ₹399 burning about 15 to 18 hours, a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 running about 6 to 10 weeks, a Woodenwick candle at ₹999. Over ₹1,000 the number starts carrying the message instead, and the recipient has to decide what it means and what it obliges. Three exceptions justify going higher: a replacement for something they already use and are running out of, such as a 300ml reed refill at ₹2,399; a gift from several people together, where no single person is making a statement; and something they explicitly asked for. Below the band, there is a floor: the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is fuel for a machine and wax melts at ₹499 need a ₹599 burner, so neither is a standalone gift. And none of it is a fix for anything - a scent is a scent, it sits alongside showing up and never instead of it, and where somebody needs more than a hard week acknowledged, the person who helps may need to be a professional. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
With a date attached, the gift explains the price. With no date attached, the price explains the gift - and that is a much worse arrangement for everybody, which is the whole reason to keep the number low.
The floor and the sensible default in one object: a 3ml attar at ₹379, alcohol-free oil rolled on rather than sprayed.
SOSA attars from ₹379

Why the ceiling is Rs 1,000, and what happens above it

A ceiling is only useful if it can be defended, so here is the defence in three parts: what the number is actually communicating, where the floor sits and why, and the three situations that genuinely override the rule.

1
The first variable
With no date, the price is the message
This is the mechanism and it is worth being precise about. Every gift carries two pieces of information: what the object is, and what it cost. On a birthday, the occasion absorbs the second one - a ₹3,000 present on a fortieth is simply what a fortieth costs, and nobody interprets it. Remove the occasion and there is nothing left to absorb the price, so it goes straight through to meaning. ₹399 means I saw this and thought of you. ₹3,999 means something, but the recipient has to work out what, and their options are all slightly uncomfortable: he is worried about me, she wants something, this is an apology, I now owe a gift.

None of that is about generosity being bad. It is about the fact that a number with no context becomes a question, and a question is work. If you would like the gift to say one clear thing, keep the number in the range where nobody has to interpret it at all.
Tip: Pick a price nobody will have to think about, then stop thinking about the price.
2
The second variable
The floor is ₹379, and going under it costs more than it saves
There is a real bottom to this and pages that pretend otherwise are padding a list. At SOSA the cheapest standalone gift is a 3ml attar at ₹379, then a candle at ₹399 at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time. Below that the products are components rather than gifts. The Hotel Collection 15ml at ₹299 is fuel for an ultrasonic machine, so it is useless to somebody who does not own a Boond at ₹899 or a Sukoon at ₹1,899. Wax melts at ₹499 need the ₹599 ceramic burner. Car hanging refills at ₹399 to ₹429 only work for somebody who already owns the bottle.

A gift that cannot be used without a second purchase is not a cheap gift, it is an incomplete one, and the person receiving it has to either spend money or explain that they cannot use it. Both are worse outcomes than spending ₹379 properly.
3
The third variable
The three things that legitimately break the ceiling
The rule is a rule and not a superstition, so here is where it stops applying. One: a replacement. If they already run a SOSA reed and are near the end of the bottle, a 300ml refill at ₹2,399 is a top-up, not a statement - the object explains itself and the price never enters the conversation. Two: a shared gift. Four people putting in ₹400 each for a ₹1,598 duo set is a different social object entirely, because no individual is making a claim and nobody is owed anything. Three: they asked. If somebody has said out loud that they want the thing, buying it is not a statement about them, it is just doing what was asked.

Outside those three, treat ₹1,000 as a wall. And note what is not on the list: I can afford it is not a reason, and I want them to know I really mean it is the exact thought that produces the parcel that lands badly.
Tip: Affordability is a fact about you. The gift is an object about them.
SOSA Cozy Corner scented candle, Rs 399
The smallest thing that still reads as a gift
A candle at ₹399 asks nothing of the person receiving it
Hand-poured in small batches. Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks are ₹399 each at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, and ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. The Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are ₹999. A candle is a scent and an object to light - it is not a treatment and it will not change how a week went.
See the SOSA candles →
Work it out in this order
How to settle the number in two minutes
  1. Set the ceiling at Rs 1,000 and treat anything above it as needing a reason.
  2. Do not go under Rs 379: below that you are buying a component, not a gift.
  3. Check your reason against the three exceptions. If it is not there, stop.
  4. Spend the difference on the sentence, and send that yourself the same day.
The SOSA principle
The right price for a gift with no occasion is the highest number that still makes the object more interesting than the amount. For most people, most of the time, that number is under ₹1,000.
Above it, the recipient stops looking at what you chose and starts working out what you meant.

What the band actually buys, floor to ceiling

What the band actually buys, floor upward. At ₹379 to ₹399: a 3ml attar - Adaa at ₹379 is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac, Ameeri at ₹385 is Taif rose with sandalwood and saffron, Mastani at ₹389 is night-blooming jasmine with damask rose, Nawaab at ₹399 is white oud with Mysore sandalwood - or a candle at ₹399 in Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings or Evening Walks, hand-poured in small batches at about 15 to 18 hours. At ₹449 to ₹549: car fragrance, each scent in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price. At ₹669 to ₹699: a 6ml attar, or a two-candle duo at ₹699 running about 30 to 36 hours. At ₹749 to ₹849: a 50ml reed diffuser, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in - Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile, which describes the scent and is the name on the bottle, not a claim about what it does. At ₹899 to ₹999: a Woodenwick candle in jasmine, sandalwood or vanilla, or a car saver combo at ₹899 to ₹949. That is the whole ceiling, and it is a genuinely good shelf.

The SOSA gift edit
The four price steps, and what each one actually says
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
Under ₹379 · not a gift The ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is fuel for an ultrasonic machine and wax melts at ₹499 need a ₹599 burner. Both are components. Sending one to somebody without the machine means they have to spend money to use your gift, which is the worst possible version of a small gesture. If ₹379 is genuinely out of reach, send a message instead - it costs nothing and does more.
₹379 to ₹699 · the default A 3ml attar, a candle at ₹399 or a two-candle duo at ₹699, car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549. The object is clearly the point and the price never comes up. Right for almost every version of this, including between people who do not usually exchange gifts. It fails only where you are furnishing a whole new home, where one small thing looks lost.
₹749 to ₹1,000 · the top of the band A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 running about 6 to 10 weeks, or a Woodenwick candle at ₹999. Still under the ceiling, and the extra buys something that lasts weeks rather than hours. Right when you are buying for a room rather than a person. It fails if the two of you are not close enough that a ₹999 parcel is unremarkable - then ₹399 is the correct number.
Over ₹1,000 · needs one of three reasons A refill they are running out of, a gift several people are sharing, or something they asked for. With one of those, spend freely: a 300ml refill is ₹2,399 and a duo set ₹1,498. Without one, the number becomes the message and the recipient has to decide what it means - which on a difficult week is one more thing on a list they did not write.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
The gift that asks for nothing at all
A reed diffuser needs no flame, no socket and nothing remembered
Five scents in 50ml from ₹749 and 130ml from ₹1,249, running about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint, Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine, Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar, Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee and vanilla. Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile - that is the name on the bottle and a description of what it smells of, not a claim about what it does.
See the reed diffusers →

The last thing to say about the ceiling is what to do with the money you are not spending, and the answer is not to save it. Spend it on specificity. Ten minutes working out that she wears rose rather than citrus is worth more than ₹1,000 of upgrade. Knowing that his flat has a kitchen that opens into the living room is what makes a ₹749 reed the right object rather than a nice one. And the message, which costs nothing at all, is the part doing the real work: SOSA encloses no printed card and has no note service, so whatever gets said is yours to send separately. A ₹399 candle with two accurate sentences lands better than a ₹2,500 parcel with nothing attached, every single time.

SOSA Bookshop scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
Hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or about 30 to 36 hours in the two-candle duo. The smallest gift here that still looks like a gift.
₹399 · duo ₹699
SOSA Adaa attar, bergamot and jasmine sambac, from Rs 379
Alcohol-free oil rolled onto the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - and the 3ml is the right one here.
from ₹379 · 3ml
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
Malabar lemon and mint, 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks. Nothing to plug in, switch off or remember - which matters when somebody has nothing spare to give a new object.
₹749 · 50ml
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by how small it can be while still being specific - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA scented candles Hand-poured, small batches Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time; duos at about 30 to 36 hours from ₹399
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - for when you cannot name a scent they wear from ₹1,055
SOSA wax melts Flameless, needs a burner Scented wax for a ceramic or electric burner - only for somebody who already owns one, or buy the burner too from ₹499
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the larger home gift, for a real occasion from ₹1,498

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

What SOSA publishes, and what SOSA does not
Everything below is on the live product pages. Anything not on this list is not something a gifting page should state.
  • Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
  • Reed diffusers - Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 in 50ml; 130ml from ₹1,249. They last about 6 to 10 weeks. Duo sets from ₹1,498.
  • Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
  • Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. Wax melts from ₹499, which need a ceramic burner at ₹599 - so they are only a complete gift for somebody who already owns one.

A note from Sonal

The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.

What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.

So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

How much should you spend on a gift when there is no occasion?
Between Rs 379 and Rs 1,000, with Rs 1,000 as a ceiling rather than a target. That buys a 3ml attar at Rs 379, a candle at Rs 399, car fragrance from Rs 449, a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 or a Woodenwick candle at Rs 999. Above that, the price becomes the message, because there is no date attached to explain it.
Is it rude to spend very little on a gift?
No, as long as the gift is complete. The problem is not a low price, it is an incomplete object. A Rs 379 attar or a Rs 399 candle is a whole gift. A Rs 299 Hotel Collection bottle is fuel for an ultrasonic machine and Rs 499 wax melts need a Rs 599 burner, so those are components, and sending one to somebody without the machine leaves them having to spend money to use it.
When is it fine to spend more than Rs 1,000?
Three situations. When you are replacing something they already use and are running out of, such as a 300ml reed refill at Rs 2,399. When several people are sharing the gift, so no individual is making a statement. And when the person has actually asked for the thing. Outside those, keep the number under the ceiling.
Does a more expensive gift show you care more?
It shows you spent more, which is a different fact. Without an occasion to explain it, a large price is read as information about your state of mind rather than about the recipient, and it can leave somebody feeling they now owe a gift back. Specificity is what reads as care: knowing which scent family they wear, or which room in their flat is the one they sit in.
Can SOSA suggest something for a specific amount?
Yes. Message SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your number and who the person is to you, and you will get one recommendation rather than a list. That includes being told when the honest answer is to spend less, or that what you are describing is a conversation rather than a purchase.

Limits of this guide: fragrance adds a scent and does not remove, neutralise or purify odour, and no SOSA product makes any health, antibacterial, air-purifying or wellbeing claim. No claim is made about how any recipient will feel about a gift. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep, comfort or wellbeing: fragrance is a scent, not a treatment, and where a product name contains a word such as Calm that is a name and not an effect. Where this guide covers sending something to a person having a difficult time, it treats a gift as a gesture of attention alongside real support and never as a substitute for a person or for professional help, and it gives no mental-health advice. No delivery date, dispatch time, order cut-off, discount or minimum order quantity is stated anywhere on this page; corporate and bulk enquiries are answered on WhatsApp. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand; the SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions and are not the designer fragrances they are described as being inspired by.
