Why does a sealed flat hold smells? Because the cooling recirculates the same air rather than replacing it, so cooking, bins and shoe storage stay in circulation.
What is the free fix? Ten minutes of open windows in the early morning or evening, with the exhaust running. Then scent the refreshed air.
In a sealed flat the problem is recirculation, not dispersal
Mechanically, an air conditioner is not a ventilator. It takes air from the room, cools it and returns it, and in a ducted flat it does that across every room continuously. Nothing is being brought in from outside, which is exactly why the system is efficient and exactly why a sealed flat develops a character of its own over a few days. Whatever enters that loop stays in it until it settles on a surface or is filtered out - and the main contributors in an Indian home are easy to name. Cooking is the largest: tempering, frying and roasting spices are aromatic by design, and in a flat where the kitchen opens into the living space those molecules join the recirculating air and are still detectable the next morning. Then the bin, particularly a kitchen bin in a warm flat. Then the shoe cabinet or the shoe pile inside the front door, which is a genuinely common source that almost nobody suspects because it is right at the entrance where the first impression is formed. Then, in a dry climate, a bathroom or utility floor drain whose trap has evaporated, which lets sewer air directly into the flat and cannot be covered by anything. Against all that, a fragrance product is not competing on equal terms - it is being added to a mixture rather than replacing one. Which is why the first recommendation on this page costs nothing. Exchange the air once a day. Ten minutes with the windows open on two sides in the early morning or after dark, when outside air here is tolerable, with the kitchen exhaust running, replaces the loop's contents rather than diluting them. Do it after cooking rather than before, keep the bin lidded and emptied, move the shoe storage outside the door or into a ventilated shoe cupboard, and pour a mug of water down any rarely used drain once a week. A household doing those things will have a flat that smells good with one bottle in it. A household doing none of them will not be rescued by five. Once the air is being exchanged, the products work properly, and in a sealed flat they work better than their labels suggest - because nothing escapes, a bottle that would read faintly in a ventilated home reads clearly here. So use less rather than more. Reed diffusers: Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty is Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus, which reads clean and cool and is the right choice for a flat where the kitchen is part of the living space. Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine is Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, dry and unsweet, which suits a warm climate. Evening Calm at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine is lavender with chamomile for the bedroom. Garden Bloom at the same is British rose with night-blooming jasmine. Fresh Brew at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine is Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla, best in a study or dining room and in cooler months. Two placement rules for a flat here: keep bottles away from anything warm - a west-facing wall that has taken the afternoon sun, a sunlit sill, the top of a cabinet near a window - because heat accelerates evaporation and makes a bottle read strong in the afternoon and flat by morning; and keep them out of an air conditioner's airflow, which carries fragrance away from the bottle faster than it accumulates near it. A duo set at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees is where most gifts for a flat should sit, and a three hundred millilitre refill at two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the right gift for somebody who already owns bottles. Where the flat is genuinely large - roughly two thousand square feet of carpet or built-up area and up, not super built-up, which counts lobby and corridor that are not inside the home - the SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees does what bottles cannot, which is one even strength across the whole flat including the internal corridor and the entrance. It is a waterless cold-air nebuliser: pressurised air breaks undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist that travels with the air the flat is already circulating, which in a ducted flat means it travels wherever the cooling does, and it can be mounted on an HVAC return so the system does the distributing. No water, no heat, no dampness and no oily film. Coverage up to a thousand cubic metres or about two thousand to three thousand square feet. Four hundred millilitre tank lasting up to around seventy-five days a fill. One, four, eight and twenty-four hour windows with day selection and adjustable intensity, from a Bluetooth app or the onboard buttons. Under thirty-eight decibels, which matters in a flat because flats are acoustically tight. Five watts, nine hundred grams, black or white, freestanding on a shelf or wall and HVAC mountable, auto-stop and key lock, CE, RoHS and SGS, made in India, four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included, and refills of waterless nebuliser oil at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred - never the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is a separate system for ultrasonic diffusers. Three flat-specific cautions. Start intensity low and raise it only if nobody detects it after a few days, because a sealed flat accumulates and the household stops noticing before visitors do. Remember that a flat shares a corridor: a strongly scented home pushes fragrance into common space every time the front door opens, which is worth a thought in a building with neighbours. And bedrooms with closed doors sit outside a machine's field, so a bottle belongs in the main bedroom whatever else is bought. Two closing notes. Under roughly two thousand square feet the machine over-scents and bottles are correct, whatever the occasion. And in a new flat nothing starts on day one - paint, polish, varnish and new joinery need airing, which in peak summer means early mornings, evenings and fans rather than open windows all day. Fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.
The same air goes round all day - so whatever is in it stays in it
Exchange it, then scent it - and lightly.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
