Founder Diaries · Fragrance by Interior Style
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Nine articles in this series argue about particular rooms — terracotta halls, olive studies, rattan bedrooms, plant-filled verandas. Underneath all of them sit the same three questions, and if you answer those you can work out the rest without me. What does the room already smell of, how much of it will absorb what you add, and is the palette warm earth or cool green. That is the whole method. Everything below is the detail.
Quick answers — read this first
The default? The 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite — right in more natural homes than anything else. 15ml ₹299.

By room: Shangri-La-inspired Tea Garden for planted homes · Four Seasons-inspired Warm Welcome for terracotta · Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity for rattan and linen.

The three questions: what it already smells of, how absorbent it is, and whether it is warm earth or cool green. Answer those and the scent chooses itself.
The short answer
Short answer: The 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite — cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves — is the default for an earthy or natural home. Then adjust: Tea Garden for planting, Warm Welcome for terracotta, White Tea Serenity for rattan-and-linen contrast, Quiet Luxury for stone-and-timber.
The method: Answer three questions in order. One: what does the empty room already smell of? Two: how much soft natural material is in it? Three: is the palette warm earth or cool green? The first decides the family, the second decides the dose, the third decides the temperature.
The dose rule: Heavy natural fibre, 2 drops; mixed, 3; clay or tile with little textile, 4. One Sukoon (₹1,899) per 270–320 sq ft — more area means more Sukoons, never a bigger machine.
Straight answer
How do I choose a fragrance for an earthy or natural home?
1. Start with the default: 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite. Cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves. Dry, green and unsweetened — the register jute, cane, linen and raw timber are already in. Covered in full in the earthy interiors guide. 15ml ₹299.

2. Adjust for the dominant material. Terracotta and ochre want the creamy sandalwood of Warm Welcome — see the terracotta guide. Living plants want Tea Garden. Rattan and linen make the case for cool contrast instead — the argument is in the rattan, linen and wood piece.

3. Set the dose from the textiles. Two drops in a fibre-heavy room, three in a mixed one, four where there is tile or stone and little fabric. Natural fibres absorb quickly and re-release for hours, so the evening total is much larger than the drop count suggests.

4. Adjust for the room, not just the house. A bedroom takes less and shorter — see the earth-toned bedroom guide. A living room needs projection and timing around cooking — that is the earthy living room piece.

5. Then adjust for the season. An ultrasonic adds moisture, and jute, cane and linen smell stronger when damp. Shorter runs and a lower dose in a coastal monsoon; longer runs in the dry months, where the added humidity is a small benefit.

Made in India, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer — and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: answer three questions — what the room already smells of, how absorbent it is, and whether it is warm earth or cool green — then start at Forest Suite, two to three drops on a Sukoon, and adjust by room and by season.
SOSA Hotel Collection water-based diffuser fragrances
Seven scents for every kind of natural home
The SOSA Hotel Collection From ₹299 · all seven ₹1,799
Seven water-based diffuser fragrances inspired by the world's finest hotels. Five of them have a genuine place in a natural home and the guide below says which room each belongs in. 15ml ₹299 to test against your own materials, Pack of 7 ₹1,799, 100ml ₹999, 300ml ₹1,799 at about ₹6 a millilitre.

The three questions that replace every rule of thumb

Most fragrance advice for natural homes is a list of pairings, and lists do not travel — the moment your house is not one of the examples you are back to guessing. Three questions travel. The first is what the room already smells of, and in a natural home the answer is never "nothing": jute and coir are grassy, cane and rattan carry dried sap, unfinished timber off-gasses, linen and wool have their own quiet smell, and terracotta and lime plaster read dry and mineral. You are adding a note to an accord already in progress, so the first job is to hear the accord.

The second question is how much of the room will absorb what you add, because that sets the dose and dose is the variable people underthink. Natural fibres are porous: they take fragrance up quickly and hand it back over hours, which means a fibre-heavy room needs less than its floor area suggests and holds what it gets far longer. The third question is temperature — warm earth (terracotta, rust, ochre, dark cane, brass) or cool green (olive, sage, oatmeal, pale oak, lime plaster) — because that decides whether a creamy warm scent reads as generous or as heavy. Family, dose, temperature. Answer those three in that order and the seven scents sort themselves into one obvious choice and a couple of reasonable alternatives, in any natural house you walk into.

The three decisions in a natural home

1
DECISION ONE · WHAT IT ALREADY SMELLS OF
Hear the accord before you add to it
SOSA Hotel CollectionHotel CollectionFrom ₹299Close the room for twenty minutes with nothing running, then walk in and describe what you smell. Grassy and agricultural means woven fibre dominates — 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite. Warm, dusty and mineral means clay and terracotta — Four Seasons-inspired Warm Welcome. Green, damp and slightly earthy means living plants — Shangri-La-inspired Tea Garden, and there is more on that in the nature-inspired homes piece. Faintly sweet and woody means rattan and timber are leading, which is where the contrast argument starts. Most people skip this step entirely and then wonder why the scent they chose feels like an addition.
The test: if you cannot describe the empty room in three words, you are not ready to choose what goes into it.
2
DECISION TWO · HOW ABSORBENT IT IS
Count the soft natural material, then set the dose
Walk the room and add it up: floor covering, upholstery, curtains, throws, cushions, woven furniture. Jute, coir, seagrass, sisal, cotton, linen and wool are all porous and all store fragrance. Heavy on all of them means two drops on a Sukoon and a room that holds scent overnight. A mixed room — some matting, some tile, moderate fabric — is three. A clay-floored or stone-floored room with plastered walls and little textile behaves almost like a hard room and takes four, with shorter intervals between runs. The same machine and the same scent, three quite different instructions.
Rule of thumb: more natural fibre, fewer drops and longer gaps. It is the opposite of the instinct most people have in a large room.
3
DECISION THREE · WARM EARTH OR COOL GREEN
The palette splits, and so does the answer
Warm earth is terracotta, rust, ochre, burnt sienna, dark cane, brown leather and brass — a genuinely warm room that carries Four Seasons-inspired Warm Welcome comfortably. Cool green is olive, sage, oatmeal, stone, pale oak, lime plaster and grey-green ceramics — cooler than it photographs, where a creamy warm scent feels weighty; 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite is the default and Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity the lightest option, and the colour question is worked through in the olive green and wood piece. Most houses contain both, which is a good argument for one scent in the living areas and a lighter one from the same family in the bedrooms.

All seven, by natural room type

Every scent in the collection against the natural room it actually belongs in. Five have a real place in an earthy house; two are excellent scents built for upholstered, darker rooms. A 15ml at ₹299 in your own room beats any table, including this one.

The scents, the machines, and the honest way to choose
The SOSA principle
Every article in this series is the same three questions asked of a different room: what it already smells of, how much of it absorbs, and how warm it is.
Learn the method rather than the pairings. A list of pairings stops working the moment your house is not on the list.

Dose, placement and running it through the year

The dose table, in one paragraph. Fibre-heavy natural room — large jute, coir or seagrass rug, cotton or linen upholstery, cane furniture: 2 drops on a Sukoon, or 1–2 on a Boond (₹899, up to 150 sq ft) in a small room. Mixed natural room with some tile or stone and moderate fabric: 3 drops. Clay- or stone-floored room with plastered walls and little textile: 4 drops, run more often and for shorter periods. Bedrooms come down one step from wherever the house sits; living rooms stay where they are but should be run as a timed session before use rather than continuously.

Placement, which is the same in every natural home and is worth getting right because so many of these surfaces are unsealed. Ultrasonic mist is water. It raises the grain on raw mango wood and untreated teak, leaves dark patches on unglazed terracotta, and encourages mustiness in cane and matting if it settles there repeatedly. Stand the machine about a metre up on a ceramic dish, slate coaster or metal tray; keep a clear foot around it; never place it on the floor beside a rug or aim it at curtains, screens, leather or art; keep it out of the throw of a fan or AC, which will push the whole output against one wall. Use filtered water in hard-water cities so mineral residue does not settle as fine dust.

And run it by season, because a natural home is not the same house in January and July. Natural fibres are hygroscopic — they take up moisture and smell more of themselves when they are holding it — and an ultrasonic diffuser adds moisture to the room. In a dry winter that is a small comfort benefit and you can run longer sessions at three drops. In a coastal monsoon, run forty-minute sessions at one or two drops with some ventilation, and do not place the machine near matting. This is a genuine consideration rather than a disclaimer, and it is the single most useful adjustment in a coastal house. If you want fragrance with no added moisture at all, the waterless Vaayu (₹11,999) is the machine — but it runs neat oil and cannot use the water-based Hotel Collection at all.

Learn the three questions and you will never need a pairing chart again. Including mine.

What to buy

Machines are arithmetic: one Sukoon per 270–320 sq ft of connected space, a Boond for anything under 150. The fragrance is the decision, and testers are how you make it cheaply.

The one you keep 300ml of your winner (~₹6/ml), or a 100ml refill at ₹999 Months of running at two or three drops from ₹999
Honest notes before you buy: a Sukoon ships with three 15ml fragrances of your choice, so ₹1,899 covers machine and scent together; a house of two living spaces and a bedroom is realistically two Sukoons and a Boond, ₹4,697 in total, plus fragrance. These are water-based ultrasonic fragrances and add a little humidity — a real seasonal consideration in a natural home, as set out above. The Megh (₹3,499, 6 litres, up to 100 hours) covers up to 215 sq ft, less than a Sukoon despite the higher price: it is a long-runtime machine for a single dry room, never a coverage upgrade, and more area always means more Sukoons rather than a bigger tank. The Vaayu (₹11,999) and Aangan (₹25,999) are waterless machines running neat oil and cannot use the water-based Hotel Collection at all; they are commercial systems for very large connected volumes, not homes. The machines are imported from China; the fragrances are composed and made in India. Use filtered water in hard-water areas, stand every unit on a tray to protect unsealed wood and clay, and keep fragrance away from children and pets. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A note from Sonal

I wrote this series because the same conversation kept repeating in different houses. Somebody has spent two years choosing jute, teak, lime plaster and hand-loomed cotton, and then buys a fragrance in ninety seconds because the bottle looked right. The materials were considered. The air was not.

What I would most like you to take away is not a scent name. It is the habit of standing in an empty room and smelling it first. Natural homes are the only interiors that answer back, and once you start listening the choice narrows itself to two or three within a minute.

Then be conservative. Two or three drops, short timed runs, a tray under the machine, less in the rains. And buy a 15ml at ₹299 before any bottle — your own jute, clay and timber will settle it faster than I can from here. A portion of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best fragrance for an earthy or natural home?
The 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite — cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves — is the default, because it shares the dry, unsweetened register of jute, cane, linen and raw timber. Then adjust: Tea Garden for living plants, Warm Welcome for terracotta, White Tea Serenity for rattan-and-linen contrast, Quiet Luxury for stone-and-timber. All ₹299 in 15ml.
How do I decide the dose in a natural home?
By how much soft natural material is in the room, not by floor area. Heavy jute, coir, cotton, linen and cane: two drops. Mixed with tile or stone and moderate fabric: three. Clay or stone floors with little textile: four, run more often. Natural fibres absorb fragrance quickly and release it over hours, so the effect across an evening is much larger than the drop count.
Can I use one scent through the whole house?
Usually yes, with the dose varying by room — that is the simplest system and it reads as coherent. Where a house splits clearly into warm earth and cool green, two scents from the same family work well: something dry and green in the living areas and something lighter in the bedrooms. Avoid running two different families in one open plan, because the clash shows up at the doorway.
Is an ultrasonic diffuser suitable for a coastal home full of natural fibre?
Yes, run differently. Ultrasonic mist is water, and jute, coir, cane and linen smell stronger when damp, so in a monsoon you are adding moisture to a room whose own materials are already more vocal. Run forty-minute sessions rather than leaving it on, keep some ventilation, drop to one or two drops, and do not place the machine near matting. In the dry months, longer runs are fine.
Do I need a bigger machine for a bigger natural home?
No — you need more machines. One Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft, and scent does not reliably turn corners, so an L-shaped living-dining wants two. The Megh at ₹3,499 covers up to 215 sq ft, which is less than a Sukoon; it is a long-runtime machine for one dry room, not a coverage upgrade.
Three questions, one answer
Smell the empty room first — then everything else follows
The Pack of 7 at ₹1,799 puts every scent in front of your own materials, or a single 15ml at ₹299 tests the default. Two to three drops on a Sukoon at ₹1,899, a tray underneath, shorter runs in the rains, and a 100ml refill at ₹999 once one has clearly won. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
