Owners ask me for a subtle fragrance for the consultation area, and then describe a machine. The two do not go together. A consultation area is a sideboard, two chairs and a table, one seating zone; nothing that plugs in can be subtle in it. The subtle answer is a reed diffuser with half its reeds taken out, and it is the cheapest thing SOSA sells.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the best subtle fragrance for a premium appliance consultation area? One Mountain Breeze reed diffuser - Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar - with three of its six reeds in rather than all six, placed on the sideboard or a shelf and never on the consultation table itself. A consultation area is one seating zone, and a reed reaches one seating zone by design; taking reeds out is the volume control. On a white, matte consultation corner a dry lemon-and-mint reads cleaner. Nothing warm, nothing sweet, nothing edible.

Why not a small machine for the consultation area? Because a machine cannot be subtle in a space that size. A consultation corner is fifty to two hundred square feet with people sitting still in it; the smallest SOSA machine is rated for a room of 270-320 sq ft and the Vaayu for a whole floor, and either one over-scents the corner in minutes even at its lowest setting. SOSA will refuse the sale for this space. If the corner opens off a larger floor that already runs a Vaayu, the corner gets nothing of its own - a trace from the floor is the answer.

What does this actually cost? Rs 849 for a 50ml Mountain Breeze that lasts 6-8 weeks with six reeds in, and longer with three; Rs 1,349 for the 130ml. Morning Freshness is Rs 749 for a white corner. That is the entire purchase. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is the right product for a 1,500-3,000 sq ft floor around the consultation area, not for the area itself. Fragrance here is an interiors decision like the lamp on the sideboard - SOSA makes no claim that it changes what a client decides or any business number.
The short answer
Short answer: one Mountain Breeze reed with three reeds in, on the sideboard, not the table. Cedar, sage and pine - the driest register SOSA makes - at half volume, reaching one seating zone, which is what a consultation area is. Nothing warm, nothing sweet, nothing that plugs in.
The pick: buy the Mountain Breeze reed (₹849 for 50ml) and nothing else. Take three reeds out. If your corner is white and matte, the Morning Freshness reed (₹749) instead. SOSA will not sell you a machine for a consultation area; the Vaayu (₹11,999) is for the 1,500-3,000 sq ft floor around it, if and when that floor needs one.
Next step: if the consultation area opens off a larger floor, send a plan with the corner marked and we will say whether the floor needs a machine and whether the corner should have anything at all - ask for a showroom scenting plan.

Straight answer
What is the best subtle fragrance for a premium appliance consultation area?
One Mountain Breeze reed diffuser with three of its six reeds in, on the sideboard. That is the whole answer, and the rest of this page is about why it is not a smaller answer than the space deserves. Start with what a consultation area is: a corner of the floor with a sideboard or console, a small table, two or three chairs, where an advisor sits with a client to go through a specification or a quotation. It is not a room. It has no door. It is one seating zone, fifty to two hundred square feet of the floor with furniture in it, and people sit still in it for half an hour to an hour. "Subtle" in a space like that has a precise meaning: a fragrance that a client sitting in the chair for an hour could not name, and that a client standing at the sideboard could. Now the product. A reed diffuser reaches one seating zone by design - that is not a limitation, it is the specification - and the number of reeds in the bottle is the volume control. Six reeds is the setting for a reception desk; three is the setting for a consultation corner. Fewer reeds, not a smaller bottle: the 50ml Mountain Breeze at ₹849 with three reeds in reaches the chairs at a trace and lasts longer than its 6-8 weeks; the 130ml at ₹1,349 does the same for 14-18 weeks and more. The register is cedar, sage and pine, the driest thing SOSA makes, which reads as timber and stone rather than as a product; on a consultation corner finished in white matte and pale quartz, the lemon-and-mint of Morning Freshness at ₹749 reads cleaner. Nothing warm, nothing sweet, and because there is almost certainly a hob or a coffee machine somewhere on the same floor, nothing edible. Then the surface. The bottle goes on the sideboard, never on the consultation table. The table is where the quotation is, where the client leans in, where the sample of the worktop is put down; a reed among those things is at close range at the moment of closest attention, and it gets picked up. The sideboard is a metre or two away at chair height, which is exactly the distance three reeds are good for. Now the refusal, and I mean it as a refusal. Owners ask for a subtle machine for this corner, and SOSA will not sell one for it. The smallest thing we make that plugs in, the Sukoon at ₹1,899, is rated for a room of 270-320 sq ft and is water-based; the Vaayu at ₹11,999 is rated for a floor of 1,500-3,000 sq ft. Either one in a consultation corner is a presence inside ten minutes at its lowest setting, and the client in the chair can name it. A machine is the right purchase for the floor around the corner, if that floor is large enough, and in that case the corner gets nothing of its own - a trace from the floor's Vaayu is the plan, and a reed in the corner on top of it makes a third smell where the client is sitting. So the honest ladder for this page has two rungs: a reed with three reeds in for a corner on a small floor, or nothing at all for a corner on a machine-scented one. The neighbouring pages take the same seat further: the selection studio is the closed working room with samples on the table, the private consultation lounge is the one room in this family allowed a softer facet, and the written standard for designers puts the three-reeds rule in one line. And the caveat every page carries: fragrance is an interiors decision, like the lamp on the sideboard. SOSA makes no claim that it changes what a client decides, footfall, dwell time or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish. Ask for a showroom scenting plan and we will tell you which of the two rungs your corner is on - and it will not be a machine.
One Mountain Breeze reed (Rs 849) with three reeds in, on the sideboard, not the consultation table. A consultation area is one seating zone and a reed reaches exactly that; fewer reeds is the volume control. SOSA refuses to sell a machine for this space - the Vaayu is for the floor around it, if that floor is large enough.
For a consultation area, one Mountain Breeze reed - pine, sage, cedar, three reeds in - at ₹849 on the sideboard is the whole purchase. Nothing that plugs in.

What a consultation area runs on

One honest answer, and one product this page exists to talk you out of. The images link to the product pages so every figure can be checked.

SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
A consultation area - the whole purchase
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar - the driest register SOSA makes. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, coconut-derived base; six fibre reeds, of which you use three; flip weekly. 50ml Rs 849 lasts 6-8 weeks at six reeds and longer at three; 130ml Rs 1,349 lasts 14-18 weeks. Reaches one seating zone by design, which is the size of a consultation corner. On the sideboard.
From ₹849
SOSA Vaayu
Not for this space - for the floor around it, later
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - Rs 11,999. Named here so you know what it is for: a connected sales floor of roughly 1,500-3,000 sq ft, placed so a consultation corner on that floor gets a trace and nothing of its own. In the corner itself it is a presence within ten minutes at its lowest setting. If your floor is that size, it is the right machine for the floor; the corner still gets no source.
From ₹11,999
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
The right size of answer for one seating zone
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar in an alcohol-free, phthalate-free coconut-derived base. Six fibre reeds - use three in a consultation area; flip weekly. 50ml (Rs 849) lasts 6-8 weeks, 130ml (Rs 1,349) lasts 14-18 weeks. Reaches one seating zone by design: the reeds are a volume control, never a range control, and a consultation corner is one zone. Made in India.

The five things that make a fragrance subtle - and the one that makes it loud

Subtle is engineered, not chosen. These are the five decisions that make a consultation corner read as faint after an hour in the chair, and the one purchase that makes it impossible.

1
The reed count
Three reeds is the setting; six is a reception desk
Every reed diffuser is a volume control with a bottle attached. The oil climbs the reeds and evaporates from their surface, so the amount of fragrance in the air is set by how much reed surface is exposed, and the way to halve it is to take half the reeds out. This is the single most useful fact about reeds in a small space, and the one most often missed: people buy the smaller bottle thinking it is the quieter option, when the smaller bottle with six reeds in is just as loud for fewer weeks. A consultation area wants the 50ml or 130ml Mountain Breeze with three reeds. Flip them weekly as usual. If a client in the chair can name the air after an hour, take one more out; if the person at the sideboard cannot smell anything at all, put one back. Two to four reeds is the honest range for a corner. Adding reeds never adds reach - only volume - which is why reeds too weak for my showroom is a different problem with a different answer.
Rule: the number of reeds is the dial. Start at three and move one at a time, a week apart.

2
The surface
Sideboard, shelf or console - a metre from the chairs, never on the table
Three reeds reach about one seating zone, so where the bottle sits inside that zone decides everything. The consultation table is the wrong surface for two reasons. It is where the client's attention is - the quotation, the worktop sample, the brochure - and a source there is at close range at the moment of closest attention. And it is where things get picked up; a reed bottle among the papers becomes an object in the conversation. The sideboard, a shelf or a console behind the advisor's chair is a metre or two away at roughly head height when seated, which is the distance three reeds are good for: faint at the chair, present at the sideboard. If the corner has no sideboard, a shelf on the wall behind the chairs does the same job. Fragrance around specification tables is the same rule for the larger table on the main floor.
Test: sit in the client's chair for an hour with the quotation open. If you thought about the air once, move the bottle further or take a reed out.
3
The register
Cedar and sage for timber and stone; lemon-mint for a white corner; nothing warm
A consultation corner is usually finished to match the floor it sits on, and the finish decides the register. Walnut, oak, smoked glass, dark lacquer and stone take cedar, sage and pine - Mountain Breeze - which sit inside that palette and disappear into it. White matte fronts, pale quartz and brushed aluminium take a dry lemon-and-mint, Morning Freshness, which reads cleaner against them. Neither is warm, and that is deliberate: amber, vanilla and anything gourmand are built to be noticed, and being noticed for an hour in a chair is the opposite of subtle. The Fresh & Grounded duo is the way to trial both - one bottle at a time, a fortnight each, never both together in one corner. If the corner has a coffee machine, and many do, the coffee is the only thing in it allowed to smell of coffee.
SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser
Morning Freshness - lemon, mint and eucalyptus. The register for a white, matte consultation corner.

4
The refusal
No machine for this space - and why SOSA will not sell one
This is the card that makes the page honest. A consultation corner is fifty to two hundred square feet of open floor with people sitting still in it. The smallest SOSA product that plugs in, the Sukoon at ₹1,899, is a 500ml ultrasonic rated for a room of 270-320 sq ft and it adds moisture, which is worth saying plainly beside a display of appliances. The Vaayu at ₹11,999 is rated for a floor of 1,500-3,000 sq ft. Put either in a consultation corner and the client in the chair can name the air within ten minutes at the lowest setting, and a machine that has to be turned down below its lowest setting is the wrong product, not a wrong setting. So the answer for this space is the reed, or nothing. If the corner opens off a floor of 1,500 sq ft or more, the Vaayu is the right machine for that floor, placed so the corner is faint, and the corner then gets no source of its own - a reed on top of a machine-scented floor is a third smell exactly where the client sits. What scent machine a 500 sq ft studio needs makes the same refusal for a whole small studio.
Rule: if a machine has to run below its lowest setting to be subtle, it is the wrong product. Buy the reed.
5
The building
A corner inherits the floor's smells - and the floor's demonstration
Before three reeds go on the sideboard, the corner has to smell of nothing, and it usually smells of the floor: new plastic from a recent delivery, cardboard from the back store, a hob that was lit an hour ago. None of that is solved by a reed, and cedar over any of it is a worse third smell. Unbox in the back, keep cardboard out, ventilate before opening, and if the floor has a live kitchen or coffee counter, the demonstration owns the air while it runs - the corner's reed is too small to matter to it, but the floor's machine, if there is one, is off on the timer and extraction is running until the room smells of nothing. Only then does a reed on a sideboard read as a faint trace of cedar rather than as an attempt to cover something. Ventilation vs fragrance in a new showroom gives the order for the building; the corner is the smallest case of it.
Rule: if the corner smells of anything you did not choose, that is the job. The reed comes after.
The SOSA principle
Subtle in a consultation area is three reeds in a bottle on the sideboard, and no machine - the cheapest thing SOSA sells is the correct one.
One seating zone. Half the reeds. A metre from the chairs. Cedar, sage, pine. If it plugs in, it is for the floor, not the corner.

The rooms next to the consultation corner have their own answers: whether the architect zone should smell different from the main floor covers the corner that sits inside a scented floor, luxury-home clients covers the visitor who already lives with fragrance and expects almost none, and what a premium appliance showroom should smell like is the floor-level answer this corner is a trace of. SOSA makes no claim that any of this changes what a client decides, footfall, dwell time or sales.

Fragrance in a consultation area is an interiors decision like the lamp on the sideboard, with no claim about what a client decides, footfall, dwell time or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish. A note from Sonal

This is the page where I sell the least, and I am fond of it for that reason. A consultation area is a sideboard, a table and two chairs. People come to me wanting a subtle machine for it, and I have to explain that subtle and machine do not go together in fifty square feet - the smallest thing we make that plugs in is rated for a room five times that size, and at its lowest setting it is a presence in the client's chair inside ten minutes. Subtle is engineered differently. It is a reed diffuser with half the reeds taken out, on the sideboard rather than the table, in a register so dry it reads as the joinery. That costs eight hundred and forty-nine rupees and it is the correct answer.

The reed count is the part nobody tells you. A reed is a volume control - the oil evaporates off the exposed reed surface, so three reeds is half the fragrance of six - and the smaller bottle is not the quieter option, it is the same volume for fewer weeks. Start at three Mountain Breeze reeds, sit in the client's chair for an hour, and move one reed at a time. Put the bottle on the sideboard, never among the papers. If your corner is white and pale, Morning Freshness instead. Nothing warm, nothing edible.

If the corner sits on a floor of 1,500 sq ft or more, the Vaayu is the right machine for the floor, placed so the corner is faint - and then the corner gets nothing of its own, because a reed on top of a machine is a third smell exactly where the client sits. And the line I put on every page: SOSA makes no claim that fragrance changes what a client decides, footfall, dwell time or sales, and no claim about what it does to anything on display. It is an interiors decision, like the lamp on the sideboard. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How many reeds should a reed diffuser have in a consultation area?
Three of the six, as a starting point. The reeds are the volume control: fragrance evaporates from the exposed reed surface, so three reeds put roughly half as much in the air as six, and a smaller bottle with six reeds in is not quieter, only shorter-lived. Sit in the client's chair for an hour; if you can name the air, take one more reed out, and if the person at the sideboard cannot smell anything, put one back. Two to four reeds is the honest range for a corner.
Why will SOSA not sell a scent machine for a consultation corner?
Because no machine can be subtle in fifty to two hundred square feet of open floor with people sitting still in it. The Sukoon at Rs 1,899 is rated for a 270-320 sq ft room and adds moisture; the Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated for a 1,500-3,000 sq ft floor. Either one is a presence in the client's chair within ten minutes at its lowest setting, and a machine that must run below its lowest setting is the wrong product. The reed is the answer for the corner; the Vaayu is for the floor around it, if the floor is large enough.
Where in a consultation area should the reed diffuser sit?
On the sideboard, a shelf or a console behind the advisor's chair - a metre or two from the client at roughly seated head height, which is the distance three reeds are good for. Never on the consultation table, where the quotation and the worktop sample are and where the client leans in and picks things up; a bottle among the papers is a topic rather than a trace. If the corner has no sideboard, a wall shelf behind the chairs does the same job.
My consultation area sits on a floor that already has a SOSA Vaayu - does it need its own reed?
No. If the floor runs a Vaayu, the corner gets nothing of its own; the machine is placed so the corner is faint, and the trace that reaches the chairs is the plan. A reed on the sideboard on top of a machine-scented floor makes a third smell exactly where the client sits for an hour. The reed-with-three-reeds answer is for a consultation corner on a small floor with no machine. One volume of air, one source.
Does a subtle fragrance in the consultation area change what a client decides?
SOSA makes no such claim, and would be wary of any supplier who did. Fragrance in a consultation corner is an interiors decision, like the lamp on the sideboard. It does not change what a client decides, footfall, dwell time or sales in any way SOSA will assert, and SOSA makes no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish. The reason it is kept to three reeds on the sideboard is the hour the client spends in the chair, nothing more.
