A gift to fifteen employees is not a scaled-up version of a gift to a friend. It travels differently, it is opened in a different room, and it ends up being judged by people who were never in the transaction. The person who receives it is rarely the person who decides whether it was any good. These three tests are the ones I would apply before placing an order, and they eliminate most of the things that go wrong on staff lists.

TEST ONE · THE COMMUTE

It has to get home in a bag, on a scooter, in a crowded train

It goes into a bag that already contains a laptop, it sits under a desk for a day because somebody had a late meeting, and it travels home in the busiest traffic of the year. A ₹500 cap is a cap, not a target

There is a peculiar pressure in a per-head figure that is set by somebody else. Given ₹500 a head, most buyers try to land on ₹490, because coming in under feels like leaving something on the table.
