Founder Diaries · Thinking-of-You & Cheer-Up Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
Start with the part most gift guides will not say: a fragrance will not change how somebody's week went. It is a scent. What a small parcel does is carry one piece of information - that you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - and that is worth sending. Everything useful about choosing one follows from being honest about which of those two things you are actually doing.
SOSA Bookshop scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
SOSA Bookshop candle · hand-poured in small batches ₹399 →
The one this guide returns to most often, because of how little it asks. The SOSA Bookshop candle, ₹399 - hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. It is a scent and an object to light. What makes it land is the sentence you send with it.
Quick answers — read this first
What is a good gift for someone going through a hard time? Something small, consumable and specific: a SOSA candle at ₹399, an alcohol-free attar from ₹379, or a reed diffuser from ₹749 for their home. Small matters more than usual here, because a large gift asks somebody who is already tired to produce a reaction.

How much should I spend? Less than you think. Between ₹379 and ₹1,000 covers almost every version of this properly. Spending more does not communicate more - it moves the weight of the gesture onto the person receiving it, which is the opposite of what you want.

Should I send a gift at all? Sometimes the honest answer is no. If you are choosing between sending a parcel and making the phone call, make the call. A gift works best alongside turning up, never instead of it, and where somebody is dealing with more than a hard week the person who helps may need to be a professional.
The short answer
Short answer: Send something small and specific: a SOSA candle at Rs 399, an attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399, or a reed diffuser at Rs 749 for their home. Then send the message separately, in your own words. The object is the carrier; the sentence is the gift.
The pick: A SOSA candle at ₹399, or a 3ml attar from ₹379 if you can name something they wear.
Why: It is small enough to be received without anybody having to perform gratitude, it gets used up rather than stored, and it leaves the words to you.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
What should I send someone who is having a really difficult time?
Send something small, and send the sentence separately. A SOSA candle at ₹399, burning about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours, is the version of this I would send most often - it is an object with an obvious purpose, it gets used up, and nobody has to find it a permanent home. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 works when you can name something they already wear. A reed diffuser at ₹749 in 50ml, lasting about 6 to 10 weeks, is the one that asks absolutely nothing of them - no flame, no socket, nothing to remember - which matters when somebody has no spare attention at all. What none of these do is help. A scent is a scent; it will not undo a rejection or shorten a bad month, and this page is not advice about anybody's health. What the parcel says is that you noticed, and the thing that does the actual work is you - a call, a visit, sitting with them. Where somebody is dealing with more than a difficult stretch, that person may need to be a professional. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The test is not will this help - it will not. It is can they receive this without it becoming another thing to deal with. That single question rules out most of what gift guides recommend.
The default answer on this page: a candle at ₹399. Small, obvious, used up in an evening or two, and it leaves the words to you.
SOSA candles from ₹399

What actually decides this, and it is not the product

Gift guides for this sort out by product. That is the wrong first cut, because what decides whether a gift lands here is not what it is - it is how much of the recipient's remaining energy it consumes. These three questions settle it.

1
The first variable
How much does this gift ask of them?
This is the one almost everybody gets wrong, and it is the whole reason a well-meant parcel can land badly. Somebody in the middle of a hard month has very little spare attention, and a gift is not free to receive: it has to be opened, understood, thanked for, and often responded to with a brightness they do not have. The bigger the gift, the larger that bill.

So rank by effort rather than by price. A reed diffuser asks nothing at all - it sits there and works. A candle asks one thing, that it be lit. An attar asks that they put it on. A diffuser machine asks to be unboxed, filled, plugged in, positioned and remembered, which is a small job handed to somebody who does not need another one. That order, not the price order, is the useful one.
Tip: If it arrives with a setup step, it is the wrong gift for a bad month.
2
The second variable
Can you name something they already like?
A worn fragrance is a taste decision and there is no way around that. If you can finish the sentence she usually wears something with..., an attar is accurate and a 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399 is the right size - small, alcohol-free oil rolled on rather than sprayed. SOSA has four and they are properly different: Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose with sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud with Mysore sandalwood; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine with damask rose.

If you cannot finish that sentence, do not spend your way past the problem. Buy for a room instead - a room has no opinion and a person does - or send a candle, which is the one thing here that works without you knowing anything about their taste.
3
The third variable
Is the parcel standing in for something you should be saying?
This is worth asking honestly, because it is the commonest reason a gift disappoints the person sending it. Buying something is easier than finding words for a situation you cannot fix, and a parcel can quietly become a way of doing the easy half. It does not read that way to the person receiving it, but it usually feels that way to you afterwards.

SOSA encloses no printed card and there is no note-with-the-order service, so the message is yours to send anyway - a text, a voice note, a phone call. Two plain sentences naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything in the range. If you are choosing between the larger gift and making the call, make the call. Send the small thing as well if you want to.
Tip: Write the sentence first. If you cannot, that is the part to work on, not the budget.
SOSA Cozy Corner scented candle, Rs 399
The smallest thing that still reads as a gift
A candle at ₹399 asks nothing of the person receiving it
Hand-poured in small batches. Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks are ₹399 each at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, and ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. The Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are ₹999. A candle is a scent and an object to light - it is not a treatment and it will not change how a week went.
See the SOSA candles →
Work it out in this order
How to settle this in about five minutes
  1. Write the sentence you want to say first, before you look at any product.
  2. Set the band low: Rs 379 to Rs 1,000 covers almost all of this properly.
  3. Rank by effort, not price. Nothing that needs setting up or plugging in.
  4. Send the message yourself the same day. No card goes in the parcel.
The SOSA principle
A gift cannot carry a difficult time. What it can carry is the fact that somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours - and that lands better small than large.
Which is why almost every recommendation on this page is cheaper than the one you arrived intending to buy.

Which SOSA product to send, and in what size

On the products themselves, the choice is short. The candles - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks - are ₹399 each, hand-poured in small batches, and run about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours; the Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are ₹999. Among the reeds, Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon and mint and the least declarative of the five, which makes it the safest thing to send into a flat you have never stood in. Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile - that is what it smells of and the name on the bottle, not a claim about what it does. For something worn, the 3ml attars at ₹379 to ₹399 are the right size. Wax melts at ₹499 are the one trap here: they need a ₹599 ceramic burner, so on their own they are a component rather than a gift unless the person already owns one.

The SOSA gift edit
The four routes, ranked by how much they ask of the person receiving them
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
Send nothing, ring them · ₹0 Worth putting first honestly. If the choice is between a parcel and a conversation, the conversation is the one that does something, and nobody has ever been let down by a friend who rang. Send a small thing as well if you want to - but not instead. This is also the right answer when the difficulty is serious enough that what is needed is a person, or a professional, rather than an object.
A reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹1,349 Asks nothing at all: no flame, no socket, nothing to switch off, running about 6 to 10 weeks in 50ml. The right pick when somebody has no spare attention whatsoever, and when you are buying for a room rather than a person. It fails on price if you wanted to keep this light - ₹749 is more than a gesture in some friendships - and the 130ml is too much for a small flat.
A candle · ₹399 to ₹999 Asks one thing, that it be lit. ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours, ₹699 for the two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours, ₹999 for the Woodenwick range. The best balance on this page between small enough to accept and specific enough to read as chosen. It fails for somebody who will not light a flame, and wax melts are not the workaround unless they already own a burner.
A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 Alcohol-free oil, rolled on rather than sprayed, the smallest serious fragrance gift there is. Right when you can name something they already wear, and it reads as chosen rather than grabbed. It fails when you have guessed wrong, which on a bad week is a slightly worse failure than usual - they will wear it once to be kind.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
The gift that asks for nothing at all
A reed diffuser needs no flame, no socket and nothing remembered
Five scents in 50ml from ₹749 and 130ml from ₹1,249, running about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint, Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine, Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar, Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee and vanilla. Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile - that is the name on the bottle and a description of what it smells of, not a claim about what it does.
See the reed diffusers →

On sizes, the rule here is the opposite of a birthday. Send the smaller one. A single candle at ₹399 rather than the ₹699 duo, the 3ml attar rather than the 12ml, the 50ml reed rather than the 130ml. Not to be frugal - because the size of a gift sent to somebody having a hard time is read as a measure of how serious you think their situation is, and a large parcel can arrive feeling like a verdict. If you want the gift to feel more considered, put the effort into the sentence you send with it rather than into moving up a size.

SOSA Bookshop scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
Hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or about 30 to 36 hours in the two-candle duo. The smallest gift here that still looks like a gift.
₹399 · duo ₹699
SOSA Adaa attar, bergamot and jasmine sambac, from Rs 379
Alcohol-free oil rolled onto the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - and the 3ml is the right one here.
from ₹379 · 3ml
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
Malabar lemon and mint, 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks. Nothing to plug in, switch off or remember - which matters when somebody has nothing spare to give a new object.
₹749 · 50ml
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

I will not tell you that a fragrance helps, because it does not. What a small parcel says is: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. That is a real thing to say, and it is worth saying plainly.

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.

Pick by how small it can be while still being specific - in that order

SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - for when you cannot name a scent they wear from ₹1,055
SOSA wax melts Flameless, needs a burner Scented wax for a ceramic or electric burner - only for somebody who already owns one, or buy the burner too from ₹499

SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the larger home gift, for a real occasion from ₹1,498

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.

What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.

So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good cheer-up gift under Rs 500?
A SOSA candle at Rs 399, which burns about 15 to 18 hours, or a 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399. Car fragrance at Rs 449 to Rs 499 works if the person drives daily. Wax melts at Rs 499 do not count on their own, because they need a ceramic burner at Rs 599 to be usable at all.
Is it a good idea to send a gift to someone who is struggling?
It can be, as long as it is small and as long as it comes with something you actually say. A parcel tells a person you were thinking about them. It does not do anything else, and it should never take the place of ringing them or turning up. If somebody is dealing with more than a difficult stretch, the useful thing is a person, and sometimes that person needs to be a professional.
Should I send a candle or a reed diffuser?
A reed diffuser if they have no spare attention at all, because it needs nothing from them - no flame, no socket, nothing to remember. A candle if you want something smaller and more like a gesture, at Rs 399 rather than Rs 749. Do not send a candle to somebody who you know will not light one.
What should I write with it?
Something short and specific. Name the actual thing they are dealing with rather than writing around it, and ask nothing of them - no reply needed, no cheerfulness required. SOSA encloses no printed card and has no note service, so the message is yours to send separately, and that is the part that carries the gift.
Can SOSA recommend one thing instead of giving me a list?
Yes. Message SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with who the person is to you, whether their home is already scented, whether they drive and what you want to spend. You will get a single recommendation, including the times the honest answer is the cheaper product or that a phone call would do more than a parcel.

Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.
