There is barely anything to dilute into
Think of the room as a glass and the fragrance as a spoonful of syrup. Stir the spoonful into a small glass and every sip is sweet; stir the same spoonful into a jug and you can hardly taste it. Nothing changed about the syrup. Rooms work the same way, and the glass you should be measuring is volume rather than floor area. Nothing you make gets taken away
Volume decides how thin the fragrance starts. Retention decides whether it is allowed to build. A reed diffuser releases scent slowly and continuously, hour after hour, so in a space that holds onto its air the releases stack: what the reeds gave off at eleven in the morning is still contributing at four in the afternoon. That is accumulation, and it is why a closed powder room used twice a day can end up smelling stronger than a bedroom with a much larger bottle in it. Now put the identical bottle in a room with a ceiling fan, an AC, an open door and a window. Every one of those is a route out, quietly exporting scented air and importing unscented air, and the bottle has no way to release faster to keep up. The third favour is the one nobody expects. Evaporation from the reeds is temperature-driven, so a warmer room draws more oil into the air than a cool one does, which is why the same diffuser is livelier in May than in December and livelier in a small hot room than in an air-conditioned one. Small enclosed rooms hold heat well, and a bathroom used for hot showers is regularly the warmest and dampest room in the house. Humidity then plays its own part: in damp air, scent tends to hang about rather than settling out quickly, which is why the moments after a shower can feel almost saturated. Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. Why does my car smell so strongly of a fragrance for the same reason?

Is a stronger fragrance oil the answer for my bigger room?
This is the most expensive wrong turn in home fragrance, so it is worth being blunt. A more concentrated or more costly oil smells stronger at the source, right where the bottle stands. It does not travel any further, because nothing in a passive system is carrying it anywhere; reach is set by air movement and volume, and those belong to the room. How small does a room have to be for a reed diffuser to feel strong?
There is no threshold we can honestly publish, because the answer depends on your ceiling height, how much the room is ventilated, how warm it runs, how much soft furnishing it contains and how close you sit to the bottle. What we can say is the shape of the relationship: the smaller the volume and the fewer the exits, the more concentration builds, and the effect is felt as a difference in kind rather than degree once you move from a bathroom to a bedroom. As a practical rule, small enclosed rooms of the powder room, study, guest room and wardrobe sort tend to delight people, everyday bedrooms tend to disappoint them if they were expecting the bathroom experience, and living rooms almost never deliver it. Does furniture and soft furnishing affect this too?
Yes, and it is a real if secondary effect. Curtains, upholstery, rugs, bedding and cushions have enormous surface area and they absorb some of the fragrance in the air, which is why a heavily furnished bedroom can feel quieter than a bare one of the same size. The flip side is that those same fabrics release scent slowly afterwards, so a well-furnished room holds a gentle background longer once it has been scented properly. A tiled bathroom has almost no absorbent surface, so what evaporates stays airborne where your nose can find it, which adds a little more to the small-room advantage. None of this changes the ranking of causes: volume and air exchange do most of the work, furnishing adjusts it at the edges, and only active diffusion changes what a large room can achieve.
