Founder Diaries · Commercial Scent Marketing
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated August 2026
Yes, and in two directions at once, which is why the question is worth a whole page. The changing suite should carry the same character as the rest of the building, because a member walks from the floor to the lockers in fifteen seconds and two different fragrances in that distance read as two air fresheners rather than one club. But the level should be lower, the placement should be different, and in the shower area itself the honest answer is very often none at all. The workout floor is already the lowest-dosed room in any commercial space we write about, because people there are breathing hard. The wet zone is the one room that can legitimately go lower still.
Quick answers — read this first
Should a gym changing room be scented differently from the workout floor? Different level and different placement, same character. Keep one register across the building so it reads as one property rather than as several products, but drop the intensity in the changing suite and drop it to nothing in the shower area itself. The reasons are specific rather than aesthetic: shower air is warm and close to saturated, so a fragrance behaves differently in it than it does in a moving, ventilated room; members in a shower area are undressed, at their most sensitive and using their own shampoo, soap, deodorant and body oil; and a wet room is the place where an ambient fragrance is most likely to read as something laid over a smell rather than as the smell of a well-run building.

Why should the shower area have less fragrance, not more? Because it is the one part of the building where the member supplies the fragrance. Somebody standing at a shower or a vanity has just used a shampoo they chose, a soap they chose and a deodorant they chose, and in India very often an attar or a body spray as well. An ambient register pushed into that space does not sit under those products, it argues with them, and the argument is unpleasant in a way it never is on the gym floor. Add warm, wet, still air and a person who is undressed and paying close attention to how they smell, and the case for restraint is complete. Scent the dry side of the changing suite lightly if at all, and leave the shower and vanity line to the member.

Can I use a different scent in the changing room to deal with the smell there? No, and the instinct behind the question is the thing to correct rather than the choice of blend. Fragrance adds scent to air. It does not remove, absorb, neutralise or counteract damp, sweat, shoes or anything else, so a second register selected specifically to deal with a changing-room smell is a mask, and members identify masks faster in a changing room than anywhere else in a gym because they are standing still in that air with nothing to do. If the changing room has a smell, the answer is extraction, drying time, laundry turnaround and a shoe policy. Once the room is honest, one register at a low level is all it needs, and it should be the same register as the reception.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes, but as a level and a placement decision, not a character decision. Hold one register across the building so the club reads as one property, then run it lower in the changing suite than at reception and at or near nothing in the shower area itself. Shower air is warm and near saturated; members there are undressed, sensitive, and already wearing their own shampoo, soap, deodorant and attar, which an ambient fragrance competes with rather than complements. Never use a second scent to deal with a changing-room smell - extraction, drying time, laundry turnaround and a shoe policy come first. Waterless suits a wet zone because it adds no moisture. Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
How should the changing rooms and showers be scented compared with the gym floor?
Five decisions, and the first one saves you from the common mistake. 1. Same character everywhere. One register across the club. A member crosses from the training floor to the lockers in seconds, and two different fragrances over that distance read as two products rather than one building. Pick a dry, clean register from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) - the Westin-inspired white tea, aloe and cedar, or the Ritz-Carlton-inspired white tea, bergamot and cedar - and hold it. 2. Different levels, in a fixed order. Reception highest, lounge next, changing suite lower, training floor lower still because members there are breathing hard and experience the same setting as far stronger, cardio lowest of all, and the shower area at or near nothing. 3. Nothing in the wet line itself. Showers, the drying area and the vanity run are where members use their own products and where the air is warm and close to saturated. Leave that air to them. If anything is scented in the changing suite, it is the dry side: the locker bay, the seating, the corridor into it. 4. Format matters here more than anywhere. An ultrasonic works by putting a fine water mist into the room, which is the wrong thing to add to air that is already carrying about as much moisture as it can hold. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is waterless cold-air nebulising - no water, no tank, no wet residue - which is the honest format for a wet zone. Ultrasonics such as the Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh (₹3,499) belong in the dry rooms: reception, office, lounge. 5. Order of work. None of the above matters if the changing room is not extracted and not dry. Extraction, laundry turnaround, wet textiles out of the building and a shoe policy first; fragrance last and quietly. Fragrance adds scent to air and removes nothing. SOSA's blends are its own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent of any hotel brand. Two rooms, one character, very different levels

Three things separate a changing suite from the training floor: the state of the air, the fact that members bring their own fragrance into it, and where a machine can honestly stand.

Why this works
One character, four levels - how a club stays coherent
1One register across the club - two scents in fifteen seconds reads as two products2Reception, then lounge, then changing suite, then floor, then cardio - descending3Showers and the vanity run: at or near nothing, members bring their own4Waterless in wet air - Vaayu Rs 11,999 adds no moisture; ultrasonics stay dry-side
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The air
A shower room is not a small version of the gym floor
The training floor is a large, hard-ventilated volume with a lot of air moving through it, which is why a gym is a demanding room to scent at all: fresh-air exchange replaces scented air continuously, and a well-ventilated gym is genuinely harder to hold a register in than a sealed office. A shower area is the opposite kind of problem. It is small, warm, enclosed and close to saturated, and the air in it moves only as fast as the extract fan moves it. Put a number on the difference and it becomes obvious. A 150 sq ft shower run at a 10 ft ceiling is 1,500 cubic feet, which divided by 35.3 is about 42 cubic metres - roughly the volume of a large lift lobby. A 2,000 sq ft training floor at 12 ft is 24,000 cubic feet, about 680 cubic metres, sixteen times the air. A setting that is barely perceptible across 680 cubic metres of moving air is a completely different experience in 42 cubic metres of still, warm, wet air with someone standing in it undressed. This is not a safety argument and we are not making one. It is a dosing argument, and it points in one direction only: whatever you would run on the floor, run less here, and be willing to run none.
Tip: 42 cubic metres of still wet air and 680 cubic metres of moving air are not the same room at the same setting.
2
The competition
The one room where the member is already wearing a fragrance
Everywhere else in your club, ambient scent has the air more or less to itself. The changing suite is the exception, and it is a big exception. A member at the vanity has just used your shower gel or their own, a shampoo they chose deliberately, a deodorant they have worn for years, and in a large share of Indian gyms an attar, a body spray or a perfume applied right there before they leave. That is three to five fragrances going on within a few feet of each other, all of them chosen, all of them personal, and all of them arriving in warm air that carries scent readily. An ambient register pushed into that space does not become a base note underneath them. It becomes a fourth or fifth voice in an argument, and the result is the crowded, headachy quality that people describe as a changing room smelling of too much rather than of anything in particular. There is a second reason to keep out of it that has nothing to do with aesthetics: members are undressed, often in a hurry, and paying more attention to how they smell in that room than anywhere else in your building. Restraint reads as confidence there. Volume reads as compensation.
3
The placement
Where a machine can honestly stand, and where it cannot
Once you accept that the wet line stays unscented, the placement question mostly answers itself. A changing suite in a serious club has a dry side and a wet side: the entry corridor, the locker bays and the seating are dry; the shower stalls, the drying area, the vanity run and the floor immediately outside the showers are wet, and stay slightly wet for most of the day. Anything you install belongs on the dry side, on the entry corridor if possible, so the register drifts in rather than being delivered at anybody. That placement also keeps the machine away from splash, from standing water and from the highest humidity in the room, which is simply better for the equipment. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is the sensible choice here because it is waterless cold-air nebulising - it adds no water to a room that already has too much, runs from a mains socket at 12V, and can lie flat, stand free or be wall or HVAC mounted, so it does not have to sit at floor level in a wet room. Its Bluetooth app and timer matter more here than anywhere: the changing suite is the zone most likely to have its setting quietly nudged upwards by a member of staff on a bad afternoon, and the setting is exactly what you want locked. Ultrasonic machines - the Sukoon at ₹1,899 and the Megh at ₹3,499 - are excellent in a dry reception with a water-based register from ₹299, and they are the wrong instrument in a wet room, because their working principle is to put water into the air.
Tip: install on the dry side of the changing suite and let the register drift in - never in the shower line itself.
The SOSA principle
The changing suite is not a smaller gym floor. It is warm, wet, enclosed air in a room where the member is already wearing three fragrances of their own - so the level goes down, not up.
Same register everywhere so the club reads as one building; descending levels from reception to cardio; and the shower line left alone entirely.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

If the changing room smells worse than the gym floor, should it not get more fragrance?
That is the single most common wrong turn in this section, and it is worth being blunt about why. Fragrance does not remove odour. It adds a smell to the air alongside whatever is already there, so more fragrance over a changing-room smell gives you a third smell that members read instantly and accurately as a cover-up, and a cover-up in a changing room lands worse than the honest smell you started with, because people are standing still in that air with nothing to do but notice it. The changing room is the room in your building most likely to have a real, physical cause behind its smell: damp textiles that never fully dry, shoes, a shower floor that stays wet, an extract fan that is undersized or switched off outside peak hours, or a drain trap that has run dry. Every one of those is a maintenance job. None of them is a fragrance job.
Does that mean the changing room should smell of nothing at all?
It should smell of clean, moving, reasonably dry air, and that is a completely respectable target rather than a failure. In practice a well-run changing suite has a slight background of soap and clean laundry, which is the smell of the room working, and it is much better than a fragrance sitting on top of it. Where a light ambient register earns its place is the dry side: the entry corridor and the locker bay, held at a level a member would not name. That gives you continuity from the reception without crowding the wet zone. If you have to choose between a changing room that smells of nothing and one that smells of a register at a level anybody notices, choose nothing, every time.
Our members have asked for a stronger scent in the changing rooms. What do we do?
Ask what they are actually reporting, because in our experience the request is almost never about fragrance. A member who asks for the changing room to smell nicer is usually telling you that it smells of damp, of shoes, of yesterday's towels, or that it feels stuffy at seven in the evening. Answer the report rather than the request: check when the extract runs and for how long after closing, check whether damp towels leave the building or sit in a bin behind a door, check the drying time on mats and floors, and walk in cold yourself first thing on a Monday. If you turn the machine up instead, the member gets exactly what they did not want, which is the same room with a fragrance over it. Fix the room, keep the register quiet, and the request stops coming.
Can the shower area take a reed diffuser, since there is no power and no water involved?
A reed is passive, which makes it the mildest option on the ladder, and there is nothing wrong with reeds from Rs 749 in a dry staff washroom or an office. In a working shower area they are a poor fit for two honest reasons. The first is that a reed does its work within a few feet of where it stands, so in a shower run it is either irrelevant or it is right next to somebody, and next to somebody is exactly what we are trying to avoid in that room. The second is physical: a reed relies on oil evaporating from the reeds at whatever rate the room allows, and in warm, near-saturated air that rate drops, so the format is at its weakest precisely where you would be asking it to work hardest. Keep reeds for the dry, small, low-traffic rooms they are genuinely good at.
Should the staff changing room be treated the same way?
The same principles apply and one extra consideration makes them stricter. Your trainers and floor staff spend eight to ten hours a day in this building, which makes them the most exposed people in it by a distance, and the staff changing room is where they get dressed at the start and end of that shift. Whisper calibration and a locked setting are the standard, and if a member of staff reports headaches, irritation or simply that it is too much, that is a recalibration signal rather than a tolerance problem, and the correct response is to drop a setting or switch it off rather than to explain the setting to them. The other half is unglamorous and more useful: staff changing rooms are usually smaller, less well extracted and more crowded with kit bags and shoes than the member ones, so they need the extraction and drying attention first, exactly like the member side.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
