Reception only, and the honest version of conservative in a consultation room is nothing at all. There are three reasons, and one of them is not about comfort.
Quick answers — read this first
Should consultation rooms be scented at a lower level? They should generally be unscented rather than lightly scented. Consultations involve close proximity, examination, long appointments and clinical judgement, and ambient fragrance has no place in any of them.

Why is reception different? It is a public circulation and waiting area rather than a clinical space, patients pass through it with fresh noses, and a low clean background there is a housekeeping matter.

What if reception and consultation share air? Then they are one volume and the level must come right down or reception should be left unscented too. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 belongs only in a genuinely separate reception, from ₹299.
The short answer
Short answer: Reception only, and consultation and treatment rooms unscented. If they share air, they are one volume.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a reception up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected volume, SOSA reed diffusers from ₹749 for small rooms, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299 - reception only, at a low setting, with a genuinely unscented waiting option available.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with reception dimensions and ceiling height, how long patients typically wait, whether consultation rooms share air with reception, and whether you can offer a fragrance-free waiting option - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
Should a clinic scent reception while keeping consultation and treatment rooms conservative?
Reception only, and in consultation and treatment rooms the correct specification is nothing rather than a lighter version. Three reasons, and they are different in kind. First, proximity and duration. A consultation happens at close range, often for twenty minutes or more, sometimes involving examination, with a patient who may be unwell, nauseated, in pain or pregnant. Ambient fragrance in that setting is imposed on somebody in no position to object comfortably, and the small room concentrates whatever is delivered. Second, clinical judgement. Clinicians use smell diagnostically more often than non-clinicians realise, and treatment areas are governed by the practice's own infection-control and clinical policies rather than by ambience preferences - which means this is a decision for the practice's clinical leadership, not for a supplier. We say plainly: treatment areas follow your clinical policy, and we will not recommend scenting into them. Third, the shared-air test, which decides more than people expect. If reception connects to a consultation corridor with no closed door, they are one volume regardless of the floor plan, and scenting reception scents the consultation rooms. Stand in a consultation room with the door as it normally is and see whether you can smell reception - if you can, either the level comes right down or reception is left unscented too. Specification: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 in a genuinely separate reception, low and key-locked, with a fragrance-free waiting option available, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. Ambient fragrance has no clinical benefit and SOSA makes no therapeutic claim of any kind. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: reception, maybe. Consultation and treatment, no. And check whether they share air.
Only if reception is genuinely a separate volume: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, fragrance from ₹299.

Where the line sits

Clinics often propose a graded scheme, and the honest version has a hard line in it rather than a gradient.

Why this works
Drawing the line
1 Treatment and procedure areas follow clinical policy - unscented 2 Consultation rooms unscented, because of proximity, duration and examination 3 Reception only, and only if it does not share air with either 4 Test by standing in a consultation room with the door as it normally is
The machine most Nagpur clinics use in reception, and only in reception: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, under 38 dB, app and timer control, key-locked so the level cannot drift. Fragrance from ₹299.
01
Consultation is close range
And the patient cannot object easily
A patient in a consultation is at close proximity for an extended period, frequently unwell, and in a situation where saying that the room smells wrong feels difficult. That asymmetry is exactly why the room should be unscented by default rather than lightly scented - the person least able to raise an objection should not be the one bearing the decision.
Tip: The person least able to object should not be the one carrying the decision.
02
Clinical policy governs
Not ambience preference
Treatment and procedure areas are subject to a practice's own infection-control, clinical and safety policies, and those take precedence over anything a supplier recommends. We do not specify into clinical areas and will not be talked into it; if a clinician is unsure, the question belongs to their clinical governance rather than to a scenting conversation.
03
The shared-air test
Floor plans mislead here
A reception connected to consultation rooms by an open corridor is one air volume, whatever the drawing calls it, and scenting reception puts fragrance into the consultation rooms at a lower concentration. The test is a nose in the consultation room with the door in its normal position, not a line on a plan - and where the answer is yes, the reception decision changes.
Tip: Stand in the consultation room and sniff. That settles it.
The SOSA principle
The honest version of conservative in a consultation room is nothing at all.
And in a treatment area it is not our decision to make.

Why reception is the only candidate

Where reception qualifies, the register should be unremarkable and the level the lowest we specify anywhere, because the room holds people who are unwell for long periods.

The SOSA scent edit
By area, in a clinic
Scent Why it suits the mood
Treatment and procedure Unscented - governed by clinical and infection-control policy
Consultation rooms Unscented - close proximity, long appointments, examination

Not sure which size? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with reception dimensions and ceiling height, how long patients typically wait, whether consultation rooms share air with reception, and whether you can offer a fragrance-free waiting option - sizing is done remotely from your own measurements.

The long-wait level argument is in the restrained fragrance chapter, the fragrance-free requirement is in the sensitivity chapter, and the physiotherapy version is in the treatment zones chapter.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

Honest notes for clinics: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control, and a reception with a washroom, damp or waste problem should have that corrected first. Additional notes for healthcare premises: ambient fragrance has no clinical benefit and SOSA makes no therapeutic, wellbeing, recovery, anxiety or pain claim of any kind. Patients include people who are unwell, nauseated, pregnant, undergoing treatment, migraine-prone or chemically sensitive, and for some of them ambient fragrance is genuinely unwelcome. Genuinely fragrance-free waiting and consultation options should therefore be available and offered rather than requested, clinical and treatment areas should follow the practice's own infection-control and clinical policy, and scenting should never be presented to patients as part of care. Waiting rooms hold patients for long periods, so levels should be markedly lower than retail and set from the entrance by somebody arriving from outside. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases footfall, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, repeat visits, transaction value or customer spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it felt - and is not a commercial performance claim, nor a claim about mood, sleep, stress, calm or any other therapeutic effect. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. A note from Sonal

The thing that stays with me about Nagpur clinics is the journey. A family leaves a town in Vidarbha at five in the morning, travels three or four hours with somebody who is unwell, and arrives into a waiting room at ten. What they need in the first ten minutes is water, somewhere to sit together, a washroom that works, and a room that is not too hot. Those come a long way before anything I sell.

And I want to be careful here in a way I am not in a showroom. Ambient fragrance has no clinical benefit, and I will not let it be described to a patient as though it does. Some of the people in that room are nauseated, pregnant, mid-treatment or migraine-prone, and for them a scented waiting area is not a nice touch. So if a clinic scents reception at all, it goes in low, and there is a genuinely unscented place to sit that is offered rather than asked for.

Where it does earn its place is narrow and real: a reception that consistently smells clean rather than of a closed-up morning. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. If you want an honest view on whether your clinic should do this at all, WhatsApp me on +91 96192 18531. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
