Founder Diaries · Chennai & Hyderabad · How Many Bottles
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Two. In a 700 sq ft 2BHK the honest number is two bottles, and the word in your question — actually — is doing the real work, because the count people expect is four or five and the count that earns its keep is two. You are not scenting square feet. You are scenting the closed air spaces you stop moving in: the living-and-dining zone that breathes as one volume, and the bedroom whose door you shut at night. The second bedroom that stores a suitcase and hosts a cousin twice a year does not need a bottle standing in it, and the kitchen should not have one running while you cook. What the heat changes is not the number but the size — a warm flat spends a 50ml at the short end of 6–8 weeks, so the room you live in gets a 130ml at ₹1,249 and the bedroom a 50ml. Total ₹2,048.
Quick answers — read this first
Two bottles, not four. Count the closed air spaces you actually stop in. In most 700 sq ft 2BHKs that is the living-dining zone and one bedroom.

The arithmetic: Morning Freshness 130ml ₹1,249 for the open zone plus Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 for the bedroom = ₹2,048, free shipping above ₹499.

Heat changes the size, not the count. A warm flat lands a 50ml near six weeks rather than eight, so buy the 130ml where you spend your day.

Start with one if you would rather. One 130ml in the living-dining zone, ₹1,249, is a complete and defensible purchase on its own.
The short answer
Short answer: two. A Morning Freshness 130ml at ₹1,249 in the living-dining zone, six reeds, on an inner console away from the balcony draught; and an Evening Calm 50ml at ₹799 in the bedroom, four reeds. ₹1,249 + ₹799 = ₹2,048 for the whole flat. If that is more than you want to spend today, buy the 130ml alone and add the bedroom later.
The mechanism: a reed diffuser has a fixed output and no switch. What it fills is a body of air, and a body of air is bounded by doors, not by the lines on a floor plan. An open hall and dining area are one space and take one bottle; a bedroom with the door shut is a second space and takes a second. Adding bottles to rooms nobody occupies raises your spend without raising anything you experience, because the scent is delivered where the bottle stands, not where the flat is. Heat then acts only on how fast each bottle is spent — a duration effect — which is a question about size.
Straight answer
How many reed diffusers does a 700 sq ft 2BHK really need?
1. Two. One in the living-dining zone and one in the bedroom you sleep in. That is the answer for the large majority of 700 sq ft flats, and it does not change because the flat is hot.

2. Count doors, not rooms. A body of air is bounded by what you shut. If your hall, dining area and passage are open to each other, they are one space and take one bottle — a second one three metres away does not double anything.

3. The second bedroom is the bottle people waste. A room you enter twice a week, with the door closed the rest of the time, is a place where oil evaporates behind a shut door and nobody experiences it. Move a bottle in the evening before guests arrive instead of stationing one there.

4. No bottle in the kitchen while you cook. Fragrance layered onto cooking makes a third smell nobody designed. Extractor on, window open ten minutes afterwards, close up, wait half an hour.

5. The heat adjustment is size, not quantity. Warmth raises the evaporation rate, so a 50ml in a room that stays warm all day lands near six weeks rather than eight. Buy the 130ml — 14–18 weeks — for the room you occupy most. At six reeds it projects the same as a 50ml.

6. What it comes to. 130ml ₹1,249 + 50ml ₹799 = ₹2,048. If you want both to run through a summer without a refill, the 2 × 130ml Day & Night duo is ₹2,498.

7. From year two, buy oil rather than glass. A 300ml refill at ₹2,399 is roughly ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 for a fresh 50ml, into vessels and reeds you already own.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C summer heat and 85% monsoon humidity, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: two bottles. Morning Freshness 130ml ₹1,249 for the living-dining zone and Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 for the bedroom — ₹2,048 in total. Not the second bedroom, not the kitchen, not the balcony. Heat changes which size you buy, not how many. One bottle alone, in the open zone, is a perfectly complete purchase at ₹1,249.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser 130ml for the living and dining zone of a 700 sq ft 2BHK
Bottle one — the zone you are actually in
SOSA Morning Freshness · Malabar lemon, peppermint & Nilgiri eucalyptus ₹1,249 / 130ml
If a 700 sq ft flat gets only one bottle, this is where it goes and this is roughly what it should be. The living-dining zone is the largest single body of air in the flat and the one you and every visitor pass through. The 130ml runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for a 50ml, which matters in a warm flat because heat is a duration cost. It is not louder — at six reeds the two sizes project identically, because reach comes from exposed reed surface rather than reservoir size. Lemon over peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus: bright, dry, nothing sweet to thicken in a warm afternoon. 9.0 on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, our scale rather than an industry standard. The 50ml is ₹749 if you would rather test the scent first.

Part one — what you are actually counting

The question "how many do I need for 700 sq ft" contains an assumption worth pulling out and examining, which is that square footage is the unit. It is not. The unit is the closed air space you stop moving in, and a 2BHK usually has fewer of those than it has rooms.

1
DOORS, NOT SQUARE FEET
A bottle fills a body of air, and a body of air is bounded by what you shut
Draw your flat and mark every door you actually close. In most 700 sq ft 2BHKs you close two: the master bedroom and the second bedroom. Everything else — hall, dining, passage, often the kitchen entrance — is one continuous volume that air moves through freely. That continuous volume is one space and takes one bottle; putting a second bottle at the other end of it adds output but not coverage in any way you will notice, because it is the same air. The exception is a genuinely long open plan, where two sources at opposite ends do beat one in the middle. At 700 sq ft you are rarely in that territory. Count the doors, add one for the open zone, and you have your number before you have looked at a single product.
The rule: buy per closed air space you stop in. Two shut doors and one open zone rarely means three bottles — it usually means two.
2
OCCUPANCY · THE SECOND FILTER, AND THE EXPENSIVE ONE
A room you do not sit in is a room where oil evaporates without anyone there
SOSA Evening Calm reed diffuser for the bedroom of a 2BHKEvening Calm₹799 · 50mlThe second filter removes the bottle most people were about to buy. A reed diffuser is constant and passive — it runs whether or not you are in the room, and it cannot be paused. So a bottle in the spare bedroom, behind a door that stays shut six days a week, spends its 6–8 weeks scenting an empty room. That is ₹799 of oil delivered to nobody. The better move costs nothing: keep the flat's two working bottles where they belong, and if the spare room is being used on Saturday, carry one in on Friday evening and put it back after. A bottle travels perfectly well upright on its tray with the reeds in. The other honest option for a spare room is a jar candle at ₹379, lit for the evening and then out.
The test: if you could not name the last three occasions you sat in a room, it does not get a diffuser.
3
HEAT MOVES THE SIZE COLUMN, NOT THE COUNT COLUMN
A warm flat spends bottles faster, which is an argument about weeks rather than about rooms
This is where a hot flat differs from a mild one, and it is a narrower difference than people assume. Warmth raises the rate at which oil leaves the reeds, so the same bottle empties sooner in a flat that stays warm from mid-morning until late evening. That is a duration effect. It does not make one bottle cover less floor, and it does not create a need for an extra bottle somewhere. The correct response is to buy the 130ml — 14–18 weeks against 6–8 — for the space you occupy most, and to leave the count alone. In a 700 sq ft flat that substitution costs ₹1,249 against ₹749 — ₹500 more — and buys roughly twice the weeks. Buying a third bottle instead would cost more and change nothing about how often you shop.

Part two — the 700 sq ft flat, space by space

Seven parts of a typical 2BHK, tested against the two filters: is it a separate air space, and do you stop in it? The last column is the decision.

The two-filter audit · 700 sq ft, seven spaces, two bottles
Separate air space? Do you stop in it? And therefore, bottle or no bottle
Space Its own closed air space? Do you stop moving in it? Bottle or not
Living and dining, open to each other ★ Yes — one volume, not two Yes, most of your waking hours at home One 130ml, six reeds, inner console
Master bedroom Yes, the door shuts Yes, every night One 50ml, four reeds
Second bedroom or store room Yes, the door shuts Rarely, and not for long No. Carry a bottle in when it is used
Kitchen Sometimes — often open to the dining side Yes, but while cooking No. Extraction first; fragrance is not the tool
Passage between the bedrooms No — part of the open zone You walk through it No. It is already carrying the hall's scent
Bathroom Yes, small and enclosed Briefly Optional, and two or three reeds if so
Balcony No — unbounded outdoor air Yes, in the evening No. You would be scenting the city
The honest caveat: this audit gives two bottles for a typical 700 sq ft 2BHK, and typical is doing some work. A flat with a genuinely long open plan, or one where two people work from different rooms all day, has three occupied spaces rather than two and should buy three. What does not change is the method: count closed air spaces you stop in, not floor area, and never buy a bottle for a room to look complete. Longevity ranges — 6–8 weeks for a 50ml, 14–18 for a 130ml at six reeds — are typical rather than guaranteed and sit at the short end in warm flats. All totals here are arithmetic on listed prices, not quotations. No temperature or humidity figure is quoted for any city; the only test conditions that exist are SOSA's own, 45°C and 85% relative humidity.

The two bottles, and the duo that buys both at once
The SOSA principle
You buy per closed air space you stop moving in. Heat moves the size column; it never moves the count column.
Two bottles in a 700 sq ft 2BHK, and the extra money into the larger size for the room you live in.

Part three — where a third bottle is the wrong purchase

There are three situations in which someone with a 700 sq ft flat reaches for a third bottle, and in all three the third bottle is the wrong object. The first is a room that reads quiet, where the instinct is to add a source. Before you spend, check the free explanations in order: is the bottle in the throw of a fan, a vent or an open balcony door, which strips vapour from the reeds and carries it out of the room? Are all six reeds in and flipped this week? And is it you rather than the room — you stop registering a constant smell in a space you live in, ordinary olfactory adaptation, hardest at home on a fragrance you chose yourself. I will not give that a timescale or promise a technique that resets it; the honest checks are leaving the flat and coming back, or asking whoever arrives next. Remember also that the first three days of any bottle are the loudest it will ever be, and the plateau that follows is the product.

The second is wanting the flat scented at a particular hour rather than continuously. That is not a quantity problem at all, and no number of reed bottles solves it, because a reed diffuser has no switch. If what you want is a room scented from eight in the evening and not at four in the afternoon, the honest recommendation is a Sukoon at ₹1,899, which covers 270–320 sq ft, runs 16–18 hours on low from a 500ml tank and has a remote and steady, 2H and 4H timers. Buy it for control, not for strength. Two things to know before you do: an ultrasonic works by aerosolising water and therefore adds moisture to the room, which a reed diffuser never does; and the Megh at ₹3,499, which looks like the serious upgrade, covers about 215 sq ft — less than a Sukoon. It is a runtime and humidity machine, never a coverage upgrade.

The third is the case where nothing in the range is the answer. If the reason you are counting bottles is a smell you want gone — a drain, a bin, a damp cupboard, cooking that has settled into soft furnishings — then adding sources will not help, and neither will a bigger one. A reed diffuser adds a fragrance that sits alongside whatever is already in your air. It does not remove, neutralise, absorb, mask, purify or filter anything, and SOSA sells no air purifier and no dehumidifier. Find the source, ventilate or extract, then add fragrance, in that order. A room that still smells musty a day after cleaning is telling you something in it is wet, which is a building question rather than a shopping one.

Nobody has ever regretted the bottle they did not buy for the spare room. Spend the difference on the size of the one bottle the whole flat walks past.

Part four — six spends, six honest answers

The same 700 sq ft flat at six spending levels, with the arithmetic written out and what each leaves uncovered.

The 700 sq ft plan
The spend, what you buy, the arithmetic, and what it does not cover
What you spend What I would buy The arithmetic What it leaves uncovered

₹1,249 — one bottle only One 130ml in the living-dining zone only ₹1,249, and 14–18 weeks of it The bedroom. Add it when you are ready
₹1,498 — both spaces now Day & Night duo, 2 × 50ml ₹1,498 for both spaces Duration — two 50ml means refilling in 6–8 weeks
₹2,498 — no refill until winter Day & Night duo, 2 × 130ml ₹2,498 · 14–18 weeks each Nothing. This is the summer-proof version
Year two, whichever you chose Oil refill 300ml into your own glass ₹2,399 ≈ 8–11 months · ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 Reeds — not sold separately; refresh yours every few months
₹379 — testing the idea A jar candle at ₹379 for the evenings ₹379, roughly 15–18 hours Everything a constant, passive product does
Honest notes for buyers: a reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room. It does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, damp or smoke smells, reduce humidity, or change how anyone feels. It adds no moisture; ultrasonic machines deliver fragrance by aerosolising water and therefore do. Every total here is arithmetic on listed prices, not a quotation. Longevity figures — 6–8 weeks for 50ml, 14–18 weeks for 130ml at six reeds — are typical ranges rather than guarantees and vary with warmth, airflow, reed count and room use. Warmth raises the evaporation rate and moving air carries scent away from the bottle; both are directions of effect, and no temperature, humidity or air-quality figure is quoted for any city. Size is the duration control and reed count the volume control — a bigger bottle buys months, not metres. SOSA has no 100ml reed diffuser; the sizes are 50ml and 130ml. Refills are oil only — you reuse your own vessel and reeds, and replacement reeds are not sold separately. Reed oil never goes into a machine and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Megh ₹3,499 covers about 215 sq ft, less than a Sukoon's 270–320, and is a runtime and humidity machine rather than a coverage upgrade. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep bottles away from open flame, out of direct sunlight, on a tray, and out of reach of children and pets. Made in Pune; free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo set for a two-space 2BHK
Two spaces, one order, two scents that do not fight
SOSA Day & Night duo · Morning Freshness + Evening Calm ₹1,498 / 2 × 50ml
A 2BHK with one open zone and one bedroom is exactly the shape this set was built for. Morning Freshness in the living-dining space at six reeds, Evening Calm in the bedroom at four — a step apart on the bright-to-soft axis rather than two compositions arguing across a passage, which is what happens when people pair a citrus with a coffee-vanilla. Output per bottle is fixed, so two sources in two spaces is the only way to raise the total in a home; a single larger bottle in the middle does not do it. The 2 × 130ml version is ₹2,498 and is the one I would choose for a warm flat, because it means refilling twice a year rather than every other month.

A note from Sonal

The commonest mistake I see in Indian flats is not buying the wrong scent. It is buying the right scent four times over. Somebody works out that they have four rooms, orders four bottles, and ends up with two that do real work, one that scents a shut spare room, and one competing with the extractor in a kitchen.

I would rather sell two bottles that keep working than four that produce a shrug. The reason is not modesty about the product — it is that scenting an unoccupied room is the single clearest example of money leaving a home with nothing to show for it. Oil in a spare bedroom evaporates on exactly the same schedule whether or not anyone opens the door.

The heat question is real and it is narrower than it feels. A warm flat spends a bottle faster, so put the money into weeks — the 130ml where you live, and oil into your own glass from the second purchase onward at roughly ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17. Leave the count alone. Made in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C heat and 85% humidity, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Would three 50ml bottles be better than one 130ml and one 50ml?
Only if you genuinely have three occupied closed spaces. Three 50ml costs ₹749 + ₹799 + ₹799 = ₹2,347 and gives you three sources for 6–8 weeks each; the two-bottle plan costs ₹2,048 and gives the room you live in 14–18 weeks. In a 700 sq ft 2BHK with two working spaces, the second is the better purchase.
Does a 130ml cover more floor than a 50ml?
No, and this is the most useful thing on the page. At six reeds the two sizes project the same, because reach comes from exposed reed surface area rather than from how much oil sits in the glass. A bigger bottle buys months, not metres. If you need more reach, you need another source.
Should the two bottles be the same scent?
They can be, and they do not have to be — but if there is an open doorway between them, keep them within one step on the bright-to-soft axis or you get a seam where they meet. Morning Freshness beside Evening Calm works. Morning Freshness beside Fresh Brew does not.
What about the bathroom?
Optional, and if you do it, use two or three reeds rather than six — a small enclosed room saturates quickly. It is not part of the two-bottle answer because a bathroom is briefly occupied. Extraction still comes first: a reed diffuser adds a fragrance alongside what is in the air, it does not remove anything.
My living and dining feel like one long space. Is that still one bottle?
If the connected open volume is beyond roughly 250–300 sq ft, two sources at opposite ends genuinely do beat one in the middle, because output per bottle is fixed. Below that, one well-placed 130ml is enough. Judge it by walking the space rather than by the floor plan, and give a new position a week before deciding.
