Founder Diaries · Diwali Quantity · How many to order
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Almost everybody who asks me this question has already answered it wrongly, and in the same way: they have counted the names on their list. A reed diffuser scents a room, which means the unit you are actually buying for is a household, not a person — and a Diwali list is full of people who share one. Two sisters-in-law at the same address are one bottle. A couple is one bottle. Your uncle and aunt and their son upstairs may be one home or two, and it is worth knowing which before you order. This page is a counting method rather than a product recommendation: names, then households, then the homes where a diffuser is the wrong object, then tiers, and only at the very end how many bottles of what. On a list of eighteen names it typically ends at ten bottles, and the six you did not buy were never going to be used.
Quick answers — read this first
The counting unit: a household, not a name. One 50ml bottle scents one room for 6–8 weeks; two bottles to one address is two gifts to one home rather than a gift each.

The order of operations: write the names · collapse to households · strike the homes where fragrance is wrong · sort what remains into two tiers · convert tiers into at most two SKUs · then multiply.

A worked example: 18 names → 13 households → strike 3 → 10 diffusers → two SKUs: 7 × ₹749 = ₹5,243 and 3 × ₹1,299 = ₹3,897, total ₹9,140. Two of the struck homes get a ₹474 mug — 2 × ₹474 = ₹948 — and the third, someone who works for you, gets cash.

The three reasons a household comes off the count: a very small single room, a stated dislike of scented things, or a home with a small child at reaching height. In all three, a diffuser is the wrong object, not a smaller one.
The short answer
Short answer: count households, not names, then subtract the homes where a diffuser does not belong. On most small Diwali lists that turns fourteen to twenty names into eight to twelve bottles. Buy those in one or two SKUs — Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749 for the bulk of them and a 130ml at ₹1,299 for two or three — and hand the struck homes something that asks nothing, such as a ₹474 mug.
How the category works: a reed diffuser is a glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds standing in it. Oil climbs the fibre and evaporates off the exposed length into the room — no flame, no socket, no switch, nothing to operate beyond turning the reeds over weekly. A 50ml runs 6–8 weeks and a 130ml runs 14–18. Output per bottle is fixed: a second bottle in the same flat adds a second source, it does not make the first one stronger.
Straight answer
How many reed diffusers should you order for a small Diwali list?
1. Fewer than the number of names, always. Every list I have been shown collapses. Couples, siblings at one address, parents and an unmarried son, two colleagues who are married to each other — a Diwali list is a list of people, and a diffuser is a gift to a room.

2. Collapse the list to households first. This is the single largest reduction and it costs nothing. Eighteen names is very often thirteen homes. Two bottles delivered to one address is not double the gift; it is one gift and one spare, and the recipient will treat it that way.

3. Strike the homes where a diffuser is the wrong object. A very small single room where a constant low fragrance has nowhere to disperse. A household that has said it dislikes scented things. A home with a small child at reaching height — the bottle holds fragrance oil, belongs on a tray and out of reach, and a home that cannot offer that should be given something else.

4. Take out anyone who works for you and give cash first. For house help, a driver or building staff, cash is flexible and it is what most people would choose. An object alongside it is a courtesy, never a substitute, and the order matters.

5. Sort what remains into two tiers, not five. Homes you enter regularly and homes you do not. That is enough resolution for a small list and it maps directly onto 50ml and 130ml.

6. Convert tiers into at most two SKUs. A worked example: ten bottles as 7 × ₹749 = ₹5,243 and 3 × ₹1,299 = ₹3,897, giving ₹9,140. Three SKUs is the point at which choosing starts costing more than it saves.

7. Only now multiply. Doing the arithmetic before the counting is how people end up ordering eighteen bottles for thirteen homes, three of which did not want one.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: names → households → strike the wrong homes → two tiers → two SKUs → multiply. Eighteen names is usually ten bottles: 7 × ₹749 = ₹5,243 plus 3 × ₹1,299 = ₹3,897, total ₹9,140, with a ₹474 mug for the homes you struck.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser 50ml at ₹749, the bottle most of a small-list count lands on
The bulk of any count
SOSA Morning Freshness · Malabar lemon, peppermint & Nilgiri eucalyptus ₹749 / 50ml
Once the counting is done, most small lists resolve into six to nine bottles of one scent plus two or three of something larger, and this is the bottle the majority usually lands on. It is the least expensive reed diffuser we make and the brightest composition in the range — lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus — which is the least argued-with direction across homes you have not seen. Refillable glass, six fibre reeds, 6–8 weeks of stated life, no flame, no socket, nothing else to buy. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free and paraben-free on a heat-stable CCT base tested through 45°C heat and 85% monsoon humidity. Seven of these is ₹5,243; nine is ₹6,741. If your households skew older or want warmth rather than brightness, Garden Bloom ₹799 is the better majority bottle.

Part one — the unit you are counting

The reason this question has a wrong answer built into it is that Diwali gifting is organised around people and a reed diffuser is organised around rooms. You owe a gift to your bhabhi and you owe a gift to your brother, and those are two obligations; but they live in one flat with one hallway, and a bottle of fragrance oil standing in that hallway is one object doing one job. Counting names produces an order that is systematically too large, and the surplus is invisible because nobody ever tells you they put the second bottle in a cupboard.

1
THE COLLAPSE · NAMES TO HOMES
A gift to a room is a gift to everyone in the room
Write the list, then draw a bracket around every set of names that shares an address. On the lists I am shown, eighteen names collapse to about thirteen homes and twelve names to about nine. That is a reduction of roughly a quarter before you have made a single decision about product, and it costs nothing at all. The awkward case is a household you owe two separate obligations to — a couple where you are close to one of them, or a joint family where three generations share a kitchen. My rule there is one bottle to the home and, where a second gesture is genuinely owed, something that is not a room gift: a ₹474 mug is a personal object rather than a household one, which is exactly what you want in that situation. What does not work is two identical bottles to one address, because the second one is not received as a gift. It is received as a spare.
The test: if two names would open their gifts in the same room, they are one household and one bottle.
2
THE STRIKE · THREE KINDS OF WRONG HOME
Some households should not be counted at all
SOSA Everyday Beautiful ceramic mug at ₹474Everyday Beautiful Mug₹474Three situations take a household off the diffuser count, and none of them is solved by a cheaper bottle. A very small single room, where a constant low fragrance has nowhere to disperse and becomes the room rather than an element in it. A household that has told you it dislikes scented things — believe them; a diffuser cannot be turned off. And a home with a small child at reaching height, because the bottle holds fragrance oil, wants a tray and a shelf out of reach, and a home that cannot offer that should not be asked to manage it. Across a list of thirteen homes you will usually strike two or three. What they get instead should ask nothing of them: a ₹474 mug, a ₹664 trinket dish, or, where the person works for you, cash first and an object second if at all.
The rule: a home you have to make excuses for is not a smaller diffuser sale. It is a different gift.
3
THE CONVERSION · TIERS TO SKUS
Two SKUs is the ceiling on any small list
Once you have a bottle count, the last step is deciding how many different things that count is made of, and the answer is one or two. Three SKUs is where the decision cost overtakes anything you save, because each additional SKU is not one more choice — it is one more set of judgements about which household belongs in it. Two maps cleanly onto the only tiering a small list needs: 50ml at ₹749–₹849 for homes you do not enter often, 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 for the two or three you do. The larger bottle is worth being precise about: it runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8, but at six reeds it projects into a room exactly as a 50ml does. Size buys duration, not reach. So the second SKU is not a stronger gift, it is a longer one, and that is a perfectly good reason to give it to the homes you visit most.

Part two — the six steps, worked on eighteen names

The method applied to a real-shaped list. Eighteen names is the commonest size I see on a family Diwali list, and it is large enough that every step does visible work. The last column is what you are holding at the end of each step, so you can run your own list down the same ladder.

The counting method
Six steps from a list of names to an order
Step What you count What comes off Why it comes off Left after this step
1 · Collapse to homes ★ Addresses, not people 5 names Couples and shared kitchens open their gifts in one room 13 households
2 · Strike the small rooms Homes with one habitable room 1 household A constant low fragrance has nowhere to disperse 12 households
3 · Strike the stated dislikes Anyone who has said it out loud 1 household A diffuser cannot be switched off · believe them 11 households
4 · Strike the reaching-height homes Households with a small child or a climbing pet 1 household The bottle holds fragrance oil and wants a shelf out of reach 10 households
5 · Sort into two tiers Homes you enter against homes you do not Nothing Two tiers is all the resolution a small list needs 3 near · 7 distant
6 · Convert to SKUs Products, not people Nothing Two SKUs · 3 × ₹1,299 = ₹3,897 · 7 × ₹749 = ₹5,243 10 bottles · ₹9,140
The honest caveat: the three struck households still need something, and the count is not an excuse to skip them — two mugs at ₹474 is ₹948, and where the person works for you, cash comes first and any object second. Note also that the shrinkage figures here are typical rather than universal; your own list may collapse more or less. Every total is arithmetic on listed SOSA prices with the working shown, not a quotation — SOSA publishes no discount slab, no minimum order quantity, no invoicing arrangement, no branding service and no lead time, and no delivery timing is promised anywhere on this page. Fragrance oil is flammable: keep any diffuser well away from diyas and open flame.

The two SKUs a counted list resolves into, and the one for the strikes
The SOSA principle
You are not buying a gift for each person. You are buying a bottle for each room, and rooms are always fewer than names.
Eighteen names, thirteen homes, ten bottles. The eight you did not buy were never going to be used.

Part three — where the count goes wrong

The first error is doubling up inside a household in the belief that it reads as generous. It does not, and the reason is mechanical rather than social: output per bottle is fixed, so a second 50ml in the same flat is a second source of fragrance, not a stronger one. Two bottles at opposite ends of a large home is a genuinely good arrangement and I recommend it often; two bottles handed over together at one doorway is one gift and one spare. If the household is large enough to want two sources, say so when you hand them over and suggest opposite ends — and if the two rooms are connected, choose scents that share a note, because Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on green eucalyptus while Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth. Two unrelated compositions in one connected space produce a seam that nobody designed.

The second error is upgrading the count instead of the tier. People who have collapsed their list correctly sometimes look at the money saved and spend it on making every bottle a 130ml, which is a misunderstanding of what the larger bottle does. A 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for a 50ml, and at six reeds the two project identically into a room. Ten 130ml bottles is ₹12,490 at the cheapest and buys ten homes a longer run, not a stronger one. If what you wanted was for a gift to still be working in the new year, that is exactly right and worth the money. If what you wanted was for it to be more noticeable, it will not be, and I would rather you knew that before ordering ten of them.

The third error is counting before you have decided who is on the list at all. A small Diwali list is usually a real list with several names appended by habit, and those names distort every step of the method — they collapse badly, they are the homes you have never entered, and they are the ones you end up guessing about. Strike them before you start counting rather than after, because a name removed at step zero saves you a decision at every step that follows. And a last note about the occasion itself: a house at Diwali is already at maximum fragrance, with lamps, incense, flowers and a kitchen running all week. A diffuser does not remove or mask any of that; it sits alongside it. What you are really giving is the fortnight afterwards, when the house is quiet and every other gift has been put away.

Two bottles to one address is not twice the gift. It is one gift and one spare, and the spare goes into a cupboard.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — list length against bottle count

The method run across eight list lengths, using the typical shrinkage I see: names collapse to households by roughly a quarter, and two or three households are struck. Your own list will differ, but the shape holds — and the last column shows a real two-SKU order with its arithmetic written out.

From names to an order
Eight list lengths, counted all the way through
Names Households Diffusers after strikes SKUs A worked order
18 ★ 13 10 2 7 × ₹749 = ₹5,243 · 3 × ₹1,299 = ₹3,897 · ₹9,140
5 4 3 1 3 × ₹749 = ₹2,247
8 6 5 1 5 × ₹799 = ₹3,995
10 8 6 2 4 × ₹749 = ₹2,996 · 2 × ₹1,299 = ₹2,598 · ₹5,594
12 9 7 2 5 × ₹799 = ₹3,995 · 2 × ₹1,299 = ₹2,598 · ₹6,593
15 12 9 2 6 × ₹749 = ₹4,494 · 3 × ₹1,299 = ₹3,897 · ₹8,391
20 15 12 2 9 × ₹749 = ₹6,741 · 3 × ₹1,299 = ₹3,897 · ₹10,638
25 19 15 2 12 × ₹799 = ₹9,588 · 3 × ₹1,349 = ₹4,047 · ₹13,635
30 22 18 2 15 × ₹749 = ₹11,235 · 3 × ₹1,349 = ₹4,047 · ₹15,282
Honest notes for buyers: the shrinkage in the second and third columns is typical rather than guaranteed — count your own list rather than copying these figures, and remember that the struck households still need a gift, most often a ₹474 mug, a ₹664 trinket dish or, where they work for you, cash first. Every total is arithmetic on listed SOSA prices with the working shown, not a quotation. SOSA publishes no bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity, no stated GST-invoicing arrangement, no custom branding service and no lead time, and sells no gift card, gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set; no delivery timing is promised anywhere here. For a larger order, ask through the contact page before committing. The least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749 and nothing below it is a reed diffuser in any size. A 130ml lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8, but at six reeds projects the same — duration, not reach. Two scents in one connected space should share a note. Replacement reeds are not sold separately, and refills at ₹2,399 and ₹3,499 are oil only. Free shipping starts above ₹499. Stand a diffuser on a tray, since the oil marks wood and stone, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep any diffuser away from diyas, candles and open flame. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room; it does not clean air or remove cooking or smoke smells. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo, two 50ml bottles at ₹1,498
The one case where a household counts as two
SOSA Day & Night duo · Morning Freshness + Evening Calm ₹1,498 / 2 × 50ml
There is a single situation in which one household genuinely takes two bottles, and it is worth naming because it is the exception that proves the counting rule. A larger home with two separated living areas benefits from two sources rather than one, since output per bottle is fixed and the only way to raise the total in a home is another bottle. This duo is built for exactly that: two 50ml bottles, bright lemon and mint for the daytime end of the house and soft lavender and chamomile for the quieter end, meeting cleanly rather than fighting. It is two bottles, honestly described — not a hamper, not a gift box, and SOSA sells neither. Fresh & Grounded is ₹1,548 and Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598.

A note from Sonal

This page exists because of a message I could not answer well for a long time. Somebody would write and say, I have sixteen people, how many bottles do I need, and I would reply sixteen, because that is what the question appeared to ask. Then one year a customer wrote back to say she had given two to the same flat and her sister-in-law had put one away unopened, and I understood that I had been answering a counting question with a sales figure.

Since then I have asked people to do the collapse first, and the result is consistently a smaller order than they arrived intending to place. That is a strange thing for me to encourage in writing and I have made peace with it, partly because the alternative is bottles in cupboards, which helps nobody and quietly teaches somebody that a reed diffuser is a thing you receive and do not use.

What I will not do is tell you that ten bottles will be better received than eighteen. I have no way of knowing, and neither does anyone else selling you something this season. What I can give you accurately is how the product works — one bottle, one room, fixed output, six to eight weeks at 50ml — and the fact that a room is the unit, so rooms are what you should count. Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should a couple get one reed diffuser or two?
One, unless their home has two clearly separated living areas. A diffuser is a gift to a room, and two bottles handed over at one doorway are received as one gift and one spare. Where a home genuinely wants two sources, place them at opposite ends and choose scents that share a note — or give a Day & Night duo at ₹1,498, which is two 50ml bottles built to sit apart.
How many different scents should I order for one list?
One or two. Two SKUs is the ceiling on any small list, because a third is not one more choice but one more set of judgements about which household belongs in it. The usual split is a 50ml at ₹749–₹849 for most homes and a 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 for the two or three you visit often.
Which homes should not get a reed diffuser at all?
Three kinds: a very small single room where a constant low fragrance has nowhere to disperse; a household that has said it dislikes scented things, since a diffuser cannot be switched off; and a home with a small child or a climbing pet at reaching height, because the bottle holds fragrance oil and wants a tray and a shelf out of reach. Give those homes a ₹474 mug or a ₹664 trinket dish instead.
Is a 130ml bottle worth it for the homes I visit most?
Yes, for the right reason. A 130ml runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for a 50ml, so the gift is still working months later. It does not smell stronger or cover a bigger room — at six reeds the two project identically. Size buys duration, not reach. Buy it for the homes where you will see it still standing there, not because it seems like a more impressive object.
Does ordering more bottles get me a better price?
No. SOSA publishes no bulk pricing, no discount slab and no minimum order quantity, and there is no stated invoicing arrangement, branding service or lead time either. Every total on this page is arithmetic on the listed prices. If you have a question about a larger order, ask through the contact page before committing rather than assuming terms that are not published.
