There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

So what is the actual cut-off, if it is not a guest number?
The nearest thing to a cut-off is a volume figure and a duration, and you can work both out at home in two minutes. Take the floor area of the part of your home that is genuinely open to itself, multiply by the ceiling height for cubic feet, and divide by 35.3 for cubic metres. Below roughly 150 cubic metres, which is a 500 sq ft room at a 10 ft ceiling, and for a party of two or three hours, a reed from Rs 749 at the entrance and another in the guest bathroom does everything that matters. Between roughly 150 and 300 cubic metres, or for a longer evening where the air needs holding rather than starting, an ultrasonic is the sensible step: a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 or a Megh at Rs 3,499 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299. Above that, or where the connected volume runs across a whole ground floor, the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 covers approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected air. But the deciding question is still not the party. It is whether you want the house to smell the same every ordinary evening as well, because that is what a machine on a schedule actually buys you.
Twenty people are coming to a 500 sq ft flat. Do I need anything at all?
Very little, and probably nothing with a plug. At a 10 ft ceiling that room is 5,000 cubic feet, about 142 cubic metres, which is a small volume by any measure, and twenty people in it will warm it quickly and fill it with their own perfumes within half an hour. In a space that size the risk is comfortably on the side of too much rather than too little. Do the free work first: clean the entrance area, because the shoe cabinet and the doormat sit exactly where the first honest breath happens, run the extractor during and after cooking, and cross-ventilate properly in the afternoon before you close up and cool the flat. Then a reed from Rs 749 by the front door and a second one in the bathroom is a genuinely complete answer for an evening like that. Why does the room smell stronger once people arrive?
Because a crowd changes the air in two ways at once, and both push in the same direction. The first is heat. Every person in a room is a warm object, so twenty adults standing in a closed living room lift its temperature over an evening, and warmer air increases evaporation and moves scent around faster. That means the setting you chose in a cool empty room reads as more present once the room is full, without you touching anything. The second is that people carry their own smells: twenty guests bring twenty perfumes, deodorants, hair oils and fabric softeners, plus the food they ate and the traffic they came through. At a birthday you can add cake, icing, flowers and candles to that list. So the room genuinely is busier and stronger at eight than it was at four. The practical conclusion is the same one that runs through every page in this section: set the level for the empty room, start early so the air is settled rather than working, and then do not adjust it once people are in the house.
Should I turn the machine up as the party gets busier?
No, and this is the most common mistake at a home party. The impulse comes from a false signal. You have been in the house all afternoon and your nose stopped reporting on your own rooms hours ago, so at nine o'clock the hall registers as smelling of nothing to you. That silence is adaptation, not absence, and every guest who has been there twenty minutes has adapted too. Meanwhile the room is warmer and fuller than it was, which means the existing setting is already carrying further than it did when you set it. Raise it at nine and you get a loud pocket near the machine, thin air at the far end, and something well past comfortable at eleven when the last dozen people are sitting down together and nobody is opening the door any more. If you genuinely want a reading, ask somebody arriving late what they notice in the first thirty seconds, before their nose adapts. And if anybody mentions a headache, turn it down permanently rather than for the evening.
Does a bigger house need a second machine for a party?
Usually not, and the reason is about air rather than budget. If your entrance, living room, dining area and passage flow into each other with no doors between them, that is one body of air and one machine's job, and a second unit a few metres away in the same volume adds very little. In a two-floor house the stair void behaves like a chimney and warm air rises, so a unit placed low in the connected ground-floor volume near the stair base carries upward on its own, which a warm crowded party evening only helps. What no machine does at any price is reach through a closed door, so bedrooms, the study and the guest bathroom are separate volumes and the honest fix for each is a reed from Rs 749 or a Boond at Rs 899, not more hardware.
