Founder Diaries · Scent Distribution · Strength vs Diffusion
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated August 2026
Here is the whole page in one sentence. Fragrance strength is how much scent is in the material. Diffusion strength is how much of it reaches you. The first is decided by the perfumer and is fixed the moment the bottle is filled. The second is decided by the mechanism and the room, and it changes hour by hour. They are two dials, not one, and almost every disappointment in home fragrance comes from turning the first when the second is the one that is short. This page keeps the definitions short, gives you a one-second test for which dial you need, and then tells you what to do — free things first.
Quick answers — read this first
The definitions: fragrance strength is how much scent is in the material — a property of the oil, set when the formula is weighed, unchanged by the room. Diffusion strength is how much of that scent reaches you — a property of the delivery mechanism and the room, set by moving air, volume and containment, unchanged by the oil.

The one-second test: stand beside the bottle. If it smells right there, your fragrance strength is fine and your diffusion strength is what is short. If it is faint even at arm's reach, that is an emission problem — use all six reeds, move it somewhere warmer, and check it is not sitting in a draught.

Free ways to raise diffusion strength: halve the distance to where you sit; nose height on a surface; out of the draught but not in a dead corner; close the door; and a ceiling fan on low, which is the best free fix in the whole subject because a fan is transport and a reed has none. It shortens the bottle's life, which is a fair trade to know about.

Paid ways: Sukoon ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft and is very often the correct bedroom answer. The honest gap: between Safar ₹3,999 — named and sold as a car and travel diffuser — and Vaayu ₹11,999, SOSA has no mid-sized waterless bedroom nebuliser.
The short answer
Short answer: fragrance strength is how much scent is in the material. Diffusion strength is how much of it reaches you. A reed diffuser can score very highly on the first and very low on the second at the same time, because it is a point source with no transport: it releases fragrance and moves no air. Increasing fragrance strength when diffusion strength is what you lack simply makes the corner beside the bottle more intense.
Who owns each dial: fragrance strength is owned by the perfumer — the composition, the dosage, the materials. Diffusion strength is owned by the mechanism and the building — moving air, room volume, containment, temperature and humidity. Neither dial can substitute for the other, and no reformulation of a liquid gives it a way of crossing a room.
What each is worth in money: fragrance strength is inexpensive — SOSA reeds run ₹749–₹849 for 50ml, 6–8 weeks, roughly ₹13–₹15 a day, six fibre reeds included. Diffusion strength is what the price ladder is actually made of: Sukoon ₹1,899 for 270–320 sq ft, then Safar ₹3,999, which is named and sold as a car and travel diffuser, then Vaayu ₹11,999 for roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft. Note that Megh ₹3,499 holds six litres and covers only ~215 sq ft — tank size is duration, not diffusion strength. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Fragrance strength versus diffusion strength — why are they not the same thing?
1. Fragrance strength is how much scent is in the material. It is set by the composition and its dosage. It is fixed the moment the bottle is filled and it does not change when you move the bottle to a different room. It is what you are smelling when you hold the neck to your nose, and it is inexpensive: a 50ml SOSA reed is ₹749–₹849 and runs 6–8 weeks, roughly ₹13–₹15 a day.

2. Diffusion strength is how much of that scent reaches you. It is set by the delivery mechanism and by the room — how much air is moving, how large the volume is, how well it is contained, how warm it is. It changes hour by hour with the door, the window and the fan. And it is the thing the whole price ladder is actually made of, because what a more expensive diffuser buys is transport rather than a better smell.

3. A reed diffuser scores high on one and low on the other, by design. Oil climbs six fibre reeds and evaporates from their surface. Nothing is heated, pressurised or blown. It is a point source with no transport, so it makes a fragrant zone rather than a fragranced room. That is not a defect — it is the same design decision that makes it silent, power-free, unbreakable and free of anything you have to remember.

4. Turning the wrong dial is the commonest and costliest mistake in this subject. More reeds, a bigger bottle, a deeper fragrance and a second diffuser all raise fragrance delivered at the source. None of them raises diffusion strength, because none of them moves air. That is why each of those purchases disappoints in exactly the same way.

5. Raise diffusion strength for free first. Halve the distance to where you sit. Nose height, on a surface. Out of the draught but not in a dead corner. Shut the door. And run the ceiling fan on low — the best free fix here, because a fan supplies precisely the transport a reed lacks. It uses the bottle up faster; that is a trade you should get to make knowingly. If you still want a genuinely even room after that, buy the mechanism: Sukoon at ₹1,899, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents included. Remember that reed oil cannot go into an ultrasonic machine and the water-based Hotel Collection cannot go into reeds — a machine adds a mechanism, it does not carry your scent across.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, made in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: fragrance strength is in the material; diffusion strength is what reaches you. Stand beside the bottle — if it smells right there, the oil is fine and you are short of diffusion. Fix that free first, with distance, containment and a ceiling fan on low. Then buy a mechanism, not a heavier oil.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser with six fibre reeds
High fragrance strength, low diffusion strength
The reed diffuser, described honestly ₹749–₹849
That combination is not a compromise; it is the specification. A reed is silent, takes no power and no water, has nothing to fill or charge and nothing to remember, carries on working in a power cut, costs roughly ₹13–₹15 a day, looks like an object you chose rather than an appliance you installed — and it never breaks. Nothing further up the price ladder can claim all of that. 6–8 weeks on the 50ml with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle; 14–18 weeks on the 130ml from ₹1,249.

The two definitions, side by side

Keep these separate and the rest of home fragrance becomes simple. Fragrance strength lives in the bottle. Diffusion strength lives in the room. One is bought once and stays put. The other is different in your bathroom and your bedroom, different at noon and at midnight, and different with the door open and closed.

A useful way to hold it: fragrance strength decides what you smell, and diffusion strength decides where you smell it. Both have to be right for a room to work. Only one of them is printed on a label.

1
DIAL ONE · FRAGRANCE STRENGTH
How much scent is in the material
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuserMountain Breeze₹849Owned by: the perfumer. Fixed: when the formula is weighed. Changed by: buying a different composition. Unaffected by: the room, the weather, the door, the fan.

This is the dial our 8.9–9.5 scale describes, and it describes perceived intensity in a room rather than quality or concentration — Evening Calm 8.9, Garden Bloom 8.9, Morning Freshness 9.0, Mountain Breeze 9.4, Fresh Brew 9.5. It exists so a buyer can choose deliberately downwards for a small sealed bedroom, which is a decision almost nobody offers.
Costs: ₹749–₹849 for 50ml. This dial is cheap.
2
DIAL TWO · DIFFUSION STRENGTH
How much of it reaches you
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic diffuserSukoon₹1,899Owned by: the mechanism and the building. Changes: hour by hour. Raised by: moving air, a closed door, shorter distance, an active diffuser. Lowered by: an open window or balcony door, a larger room, distance. Unaffected by: which oil is in the bottle.

This is the dial that makes the difference between a fragrant corner and a fragranced room, and it is the one a passive reed cannot turn at all. An ultrasonic machine such as Sukoon can publish 270–320 sq ft precisely because it moves air; a reed cannot publish a figure at all, and any brand that quotes one is quoting a number for a room it has never seen.
Costs: nothing at all, in its free forms. Then ₹1,899 upward.
3
WHY THEY DO NOT SUBSTITUTE
Emission is not transport
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuserGarden Bloom₹799Emission is how much fragrance leaves the bottle: reed count, bottle size, temperature, the oil. Transport is how far it gets: moving air, which a reed does not supply. Raising emission with an unchanged transport gives you a taller peak in the same place. That is the whole reason more reeds, a bigger bottle, a stronger oil and a second diffuser all disappoint identically — two bottles make two hills with a valley between, which is exactly right for a long or L-shaped room used at both ends, or for different scents in different zones, and exactly wrong for evenness across one open volume. You cannot fix a transport problem by increasing emission.
Worth remembering: bottle volume is a duration specification, not a coverage one.

The one-second test for which dial you are short of

Stand next to the bottle and smell it properly. If it smells the way you want it to there, your fragrance strength is fine and every rupee you spend on a stronger oil is misdirected. What you are short of is diffusion strength, and that is bought with air, not with liquid. If instead it is faint even at arm's reach, you have a genuine emission problem: put all six reeds in, move it somewhere less cold, make sure it is not in an air-conditioning blast that strips the reeds, and flip them — every three to five days, not daily.

There is a second test worth running before you spend anything, because it saves a great many people from buying a solution to a problem they do not have. Leave the room for fifteen minutes and walk back in. Receptors adapt to a constant stimulus within minutes: the signal keeps arriving and the brain stops forwarding it, which means you can sit in a properly scented room and correctly report smelling nothing. Better still, ask somebody else. A visitor is a far better instrument than the resident, and if guests remark on the fragrance it is working for everyone except the person who lives inside it.

Everything that changes each dial

A short table, because the point of this page is the distinction rather than the detail. Nothing in the left column affects the right column, and nothing in the right column affects the left.

Two dials, never one
What moves fragrance strength, and what moves diffusion strength
Change Fragrance strength Diffusion strength Cost
A ceiling fan on low ★ No change Raises it — the best free fix there is Free. Shortens the bottle's life
Closing the door No change Raises it — containment is half the equation Free
Halving the distance to where you sit No change Raises what reaches you, dramatically Free
Three reeds to six Raises emission at the source No change — a taller peak in the same place Free, but roughly halves the life
A deeper composition, 8.9 up to 9.5 Raises it No change ₹749 to ₹849
50ml to 130ml No change No change — this buys 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 About ₹500
An open window or balcony door No change Lowers it — air that leaves takes the fragrance with it Free, and costing you the bottle
Sukoon ₹1,899, an active diffuser Different oil, so a different scent Raises it by design — 270–320 sq ft ₹1,899, plus a socket, filling and cleaning

One dial costs ₹749. The other is what the ladder is made of
The SOSA principle
Fragrance strength is how much scent is in the material. Diffusion strength is how much of it reaches you.
Two dials, not one. Almost every disappointing purchase in home fragrance is the first dial being turned when the second was the one that was short.

What "enough" actually means, so you know when to stop

A useful correction before you buy anything: you are not supposed to smell it all the time. A diffuser you notice continuously is set too strong for the room. Home fragrance is meant to be registered on arrival and at transitions — walking in, sitting down, waking up — and to become part of the background in between. That is not the product underperforming; that is your nose behaving the way noses behave.

Which reframes the target. The right question is not "why can I not smell it constantly" but "does the room greet me, and does it greet a visitor". If the answer is yes, you have enough diffusion strength and buying more would tip you into the flattened, single-note impression that people describe as smelling like air freshener. If the answer is no, the free list comes first and the mechanism second.

And a last piece of honesty about money, since this is the page where it belongs. Beyond a good ₹749 bottle, you are mostly paying for the machine rather than for the fragrance. A reed and a nebuliser can run closely related compositions and produce completely different rooms, because the extra price buys transport, control and evenness — not a better smell. Knowing that is what stops you spending on the wrong dial.

Fragrance strength is what is in the bottle. Diffusion strength is what makes it across the room. No amount of the first will ever supply the second.

What to buy, in what order — and what I would leave on the shelf

Free first, then the cheapest mechanism that genuinely raises diffusion strength. The last row is the honest gap, and it is in our own range.

The ladder, in buying order
Raising diffusion strength, cheapest first
Step What it is When it is the right answer Price
1. The free method ★ Half the distance, nose height, door closed, out of the draught, ceiling fan on low First, for everybody. A large share of readers stop here ₹0
2. All six reeds, and the right size Six is full projection, three is a soft bedside level and roughly doubles the life. 50ml up to ~150 sq ft; 130ml above that When even the zone beside the bottle is faint — an emission problem rather than a diffusion one ₹749–₹1,349
3. Sukoon ultrasonic 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents included. It moves air When diffusion strength is genuinely what you want. Water-diluted, adds humidity, needs a socket and filling, can leave white mineral dust in hard water ₹1,899
4. Safar waterless Undiluted oil in a dry mist — no water, no dilution, no humidity, no dust. Cordless, three speeds, 1 / 2 / 3-hour timer. Named and sold as a car and travel diffuser, needs recharging, not set-and-forget Both dials high, at personal scale — desk, bedside, car ₹3,999
Not this: Megh, and not Vaayu — the honest gap Megh: six litres, ~100 hours, ~215 sq ft, less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon. Vaayu ₹11,999: up to 1000 m³, roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft. Between Safar and Vaayu we have no mid-sized waterless bedroom nebuliser Megh is runtime and humidity, never diffusion strength. Vaayu is the wrong purchase for one bedroom, where nine-tenths of it is wasted; it belongs on a whole floor or in a large open-plan home ₹3,499 / ₹11,999
Honest notes for buyers: SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free, on a heat-stable CCT carrier rather than DPG, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, composed in Pune. Reed oil is a separate product from the water-based Hotel Collection, which is ultrasonic-only; they are not interchangeable in either direction, there is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser, and Safar takes pure fragrance oil. The ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a machine refill and never a first purchase. No projection distance is published for any reed diffuser and none is estimated here; SOSA publishes no room coverage figure for Safar either. Free shipping above ₹499. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
Buying the second dial
Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser ₹1,899
A piezo plate vibrates a water-and-oil mixture into a cool mist and, in doing so, moves air — which is the one thing a reed cannot do for itself. 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, with three 15ml Hotel Collection scents in the box, so you need buy no oil to begin. Stated plainly: the oil is diluted in water, the output adds humidity, it needs a socket and refilling, and in hard-water cities it can leave a fine white mineral dust. This is very often the correct bedroom answer and should never be skipped on the way to something dearer.

A note from Sonal

If I could add one line to every home fragrance label in the world, it would be this one. Fragrance strength is how much scent is in the material; diffusion strength is how much of it reaches you. Our whole industry prints the first and stays silent about the second, and then customers quite reasonably conclude that the two are the same number.

They are not, and the difference is the entire reason a beautiful oil can live in a quiet room. A composition can be dosed generously, built on real material, and carried on a heat-stable base so it survives a 45°C afternoon — and still be almost inaudible four metres away, because nothing in the object moves air.

So I would rather teach the distinction than sell against it. Turn dial two for free before you touch dial one. Move the bottle closer, shut the door, run the fan on low, and give it an evening. If that settles it, you have spent nothing, and I count that as the page working. If it does not, buy the ₹1,899 Sukoon and keep the reed exactly where it is — it asks nothing of you, works in a power cut and never breaks. Composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between fragrance strength and diffusion strength?
Fragrance strength is how much scent is in the material — a property of the oil, decided by the perfumer, fixed when the bottle is filled and unchanged by the room. Diffusion strength is how much of that scent reaches you — a property of the delivery mechanism and the room, decided by moving air, volume, containment and temperature, and unchanged by the oil. They are two separate dials, and a reed diffuser scores high on the first and low on the second by design.
How do I tell which one I am short of?
Stand beside the bottle. If it smells the way you want it to there, your fragrance strength is fine and you are short of diffusion strength — which is bought with moving air, not with a heavier oil. If it is faint even at arm's reach, that is an emission problem: use all six reeds, keep it out of an air-conditioning blast, move it somewhere less cold, and flip the reeds every three to five days.
Can a stronger oil raise diffusion strength?
No. Nothing you do to a liquid gives it a way of crossing a room. A stronger oil raises the concentration everywhere along the same gradient, which makes the zone beside the bottle more intense while leaving the far corner effectively where it was. That is why more reeds, a bigger bottle, a deeper fragrance and a second diffuser all disappoint in the same way: each raises emission and none adds transport.
Am I supposed to smell my diffuser all the time?
No — a diffuser you notice continuously is set too strong for the room. Home fragrance is meant to be registered on arrival and at transitions, then to sit in the background. Receptors adapt to a constant stimulus within minutes, so you can be in a properly scented room and correctly report smelling nothing. Leave for fifteen minutes and walk back in, and ask a visitor, who is a better instrument than you are in your own home.
Am I paying for the fragrance or for the machine?
Past the price of a good reed, mostly for the machine — which is the honest summary of this whole page. A ₹749 reed and a machine many times its price can run closely related compositions and produce completely different rooms, because the extra money buys transport, control and evenness rather than a better smell. That is also why the free fixes matter so much: they buy a little transport for nothing at all.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, defining fragrance strength and diffusion strength and explaining why they are separate quantities with separate owners. The reasoning — a point source with no transport, concentration as output divided by volume and further reduced by air exchange, receptor adaptation to a constant stimulus, and the distinction between emission and transport — is offered as general physical chemistry, psychophysics and building physics rather than as measurement of any specific product. No projection distance, air-change rate, oil-consumption rate or percentage is claimed, because none is published; in particular SOSA publishes no room coverage figure for Safar and none is estimated here. The SOSA 8.9–9.5 strength scale describes perceived intensity in a room and is not a measure of quality, concentration or reach. Longevity figures assume ordinary Indian household conditions and shorten in hot, open or fan-circulated rooms. Review quotations are from verified SOSA buyers.
