Founder Diaries · Commercial Scent Marketing
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 12 min read Updated August 2026
This is the section pillar, and it is arranged in the only order that works: ventilation and extraction first, the studio floor second, the client-facing rooms third. Most practices approach it in reverse, buy a machine for the reception because that is where clients arrive, and discover that the machine is fighting the model shop. Air behaves like structure in one respect. If the thing underneath is not resolved, nothing you put on top of it performs, and the failure shows up somewhere you were not looking.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the right order for sorting out the air in an architecture studio? Three stages and they do not commute. Stage one is ventilation and extraction: local exhaust at the model bench ducted outside, the laser cutter on its own duct, a resin printer enclosed, a make-up air path so the extractor is not starving, a door on the workshop, and a check on whether the workshop shares an air-conditioning return with the studio. Stage two is the studio floor: one register held at the lowest level that still registers, on a locked schedule, sized to the connected volume rather than the lease area. Stage three is the client-facing rooms: reception, the meeting room and the presentation room, on the same register a notch higher. The model shop is never scented at any stage.

Which rooms in an architecture practice should be scented and which should not? Scent the open studio floor, reception, the meeting room and the client presentation room, all on one register at two levels. A director's or principal's cabin can take a reed diffuser and does not have to match. A washroom can take a reed diffuser and does not have to match either. Never scent the model workshop or a spray area, which need extraction and a closed door instead. Be cautious about a materials and samples store, because finish samples, timber, fabric and leather sit there for months and will quietly pick up whatever is in the air, which is not what you want when you present them to a client.

What does a 2,000 sq ft practice actually need to buy? Size the connected air rather than the floor area. 2,000 sq ft at a ten-foot ceiling is 20,000 cubic feet, about 566 cubic metres, but once the cabin, the meeting room and the closed model shop are removed, the open floor plus reception is often nearer 370 cubic metres. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 covers roughly 1000 cubic metres of connected air and runs low in that studio, which is where it should sit. A single enclosed room runs on a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 or a Megh at Rs 3,499 with a Hotel Collection register from Rs 299. Reeds from Rs 749 handle a cabin or a washroom. If the studio is double-height at sixteen feet, that is about 906 cubic metres and a different conversation.
The short answer
Short answer: Order of operations for an architecture practice: ventilation and extraction first, then the studio floor, then the client rooms. Stage one: local exhaust at the model bench ducted outside, the laser cutter on its own duct, a make-up air path, a closed workshop door and a separate air-conditioning return. Stage two: one register on the open studio floor at the lowest level that still registers, sized to the connected volume, on a locked schedule. Stage three: reception, meeting room and presentation room on the same register a notch higher. Never scent the model shop or a spray area, and be cautious about a samples store. Vaayu Rs 11,999, Megh Rs 3,499, Sukoon Rs 1,899, registers from Rs 299, reeds from Rs 749. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Commercial scent marketing - at a glanceStep 1 - customers judge your premises in the first breath, before a wordStep 2 - one signature = premium feel, longer visits, brand recallStep 3 - size the system: Vaayu ₹11,999 covers most commercial floorsSingle rooms - reeds ₹749 · large premises - HVAC to ₹38,500Scheduled, hands-off · WhatsApp consult available
Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
Give me the whole plan for an architecture practice, zone by zone, in order.
Stage one, ventilation and extraction, and nothing else until it is done. Local exhaust at the model bench, positioned where the work happens and ducted to outside rather than through a filter standing in the same room. The laser cutter on its own duct to outside. A resin printer, if you have one, enclosed. A make-up air path so the extractor is not fighting a sealed box. A door on the workshop that is closed while work is in progress. And the check almost everybody misses: whether the workshop and the studio share an air-conditioning return, because a shared return delivers shop air to the drawing desks regardless of how good the door is. The manufacturers' own handling and storage guidance for your adhesives, cements and primers governs here, not us, and no SOSA product does anything to solvent vapour. Stage two, the studio floor. Size the connected volume, not the lease: 2,000 sq ft at ten feet is 20,000 cubic feet or about 566 cubic metres, but the open floor plus reception is often nearer 370. One register, chosen to agree with the interior: 1 Hotels-inspired (cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves) for concrete, timber and steel, Ritz-Carlton-inspired (white tea, bergamot, cedar) for a lighter studio, Westin-inspired (white tea, aloe, cedar) when it should barely register. From the Hotel Collection, from ₹299. Held by a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, waterless, app and timer) across a connected floor, or a Sukoon (₹1,899) or Megh (₹3,499) in a single room, at the lowest setting that still registers, on a locked schedule. Your team are in that air ten hours a day and are the calibration instrument; a sensitivity report is a recalibration signal, never a tolerance problem. Stage three, the client-facing rooms. Reception, the meeting room and the presentation room, same register, one notch above the studio floor, because visitors arrive from outside and read the air in the first breath. A principal's cabin or a washroom can take reeds from ₹749 and does not have to match. Never: the model shop, a spray area, and be careful with a materials and samples store. SOSA's blends are its own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your plan and section. One line: extraction and the workshop door first, then the studio floor on one register at the lowest usable setting, then the client rooms a notch above. Never the model shop. Vaayu ₹11,999, Megh ₹3,499, Sukoon ₹1,899, registers from ₹299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

The three stages, in the order they have to happen

Stage one removes, stage two establishes, stage three finishes. Doing them out of order is the single most common reason a practice ends up disappointed with a machine it chose correctly.

Why this works
The whole practice, in three stages and one register
1Order of operations: ventilation and extraction, then studio, then clients2The model shop stays unscented, behind a door, with its own extractor3One register, two levels: studio floor low, client rooms a notch above4Size the connected volume, not the floor area written on the lease
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
Stage one
Ventilation and extraction, which is most of the work and none of the fun
Everything a practice can do without buying fragrance sits here, and in a studio with a workshop it is worth more than everything that comes after it. Capture at source rather than dilute: an extraction arm or hood at the model bench itself, ducted to outside, because a filter cartridge standing in the corner of the same room has not removed anything from the room. The laser cutter on its own duct, and the discipline of not lifting the lid before the bed has cleared, which is a habit rather than a purchase and is responsible for more studio-floor complaints than the machine itself. A resin printer in an enclosure. A make-up air path, because an extractor pulling on a sealed room starves and the flow on the box becomes fiction. A workshop door that closes while work is in progress rather than being propped with a stool at eleven at night. And the item that quietly defeats all of the above: a shared air-conditioning return between the shop and the studio, which collects shop air and redelivers it to the desks continuously. Separate the return or put the shop on its own unit. Beyond the workshop there are two ordinary studio items worth a minute each: give the plotter a metre of clear air rather than a cupboard, and keep the pantry bin and the fridge on a real cleaning rota, because a studio with a bad Monday-morning smell almost always has a pantry rather than a fragrance problem. None of this is fragrance work and all of it comes first.
Tip: stage one is a services drawing and a set of habits. If it is unresolved, no machine at any price will make the studio read correctly.
2
Stage two
The studio floor, where the people are and where the restraint lives
The studio floor is occupied by the same twelve or twenty people for ten hours a day, six days a week in a deadline month, which makes it the most exposed room in the building and the one that sets the level for everything else. Two decisions. First the volume, which is arithmetic and which you should do rather than read: connected floor area in square feet times the finished ceiling height in feet, divided by 35.3. An open floor of 1,100 sq ft at ten feet is 11,000 cubic feet, about 312 cubic metres; add a connected reception of 200 sq ft, about 57 cubic metres, and you are buying against roughly 370 rather than the 566 the lease implies. A double-height studio at sixteen feet is a different number and a different conversation. Second the level, which is the whole discipline: the lowest setting that still registers to somebody walking in from outside, held on a locked schedule so that adaptation cannot talk anyone into raising it three weeks later. That is what the app and timer on a Vaayu (₹11,999) are actually for, and in a single enclosed studio room a Sukoon (₹1,899) with a fixed routine achieves the same thing. Your team are the instrument. Ask them specifically, not politely: do you still notice it at seven in the evening, has anyone had a headache pattern that began when the machine did. Any sensitivity report is a recalibration signal and the correct response is to drop a setting, not to explain the research.
3
Stage three
The client-facing rooms, and the short list of rooms that get nothing
Reception, the meeting room and the presentation room are where the practice is judged by somebody who has just come in off the street, and they carry the same register as the studio floor at one notch above it, for the simple reason that a visitor's nose is not adapted and a visitor is only there for an hour. One register everywhere, two levels, is the rule that keeps a small building coherent, because a client walks from the door to the presentation table in under a minute and two fragrances across that distance collide rather than sequence. The presentation room deserves a specific check: it is usually closed for the ninety minutes that matter most, so test whether it is genuinely connected to the studio air by shutting the door and standing in it, and if it reads as unscented, give it a small system of its own running the same register rather than turning the main machine up. Then the list of rooms that get nothing, which is short and firm. The model workshop and any spray area, which get extraction and a closed door instead. A materials and samples store, because timber, fabric, leather and finish samples sit there for months and will take on whatever is in the air, which is the last thing you want when you put a sample in a client's hand. And a principal's cabin or a washroom can be treated as separate territory with reeds from ₹749 if you want, since people mentally grant those rooms their own status and they do not need to match. Registers from the Hotel Collection start at ₹299.
Tip: one register everywhere it is used, two levels: studio floor at the bottom of the range, client rooms one notch above it.
The SOSA principle
Air behaves like structure in one respect. If the thing underneath is not resolved, nothing you put on top of it performs - and the failure appears somewhere you were not looking.
Extraction and the workshop door, then the studio floor at the lowest usable level, then the client rooms one notch above. In that order, every time.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

If I can only do one thing this month, what should it be?
Find out whether your model shop and your studio share an air-conditioning return, and if they do, separate them. It costs less than a machine in most fitted-out studios, it is the single item on this page that quietly defeats every other item, and almost nobody checks it because the door looks like it is doing the job. If your practice has no workshop at all, then the one thing is to walk in cold on a Monday morning before anyone else arrives and write down honestly what the studio smells of, because that is the only reading you will get that is not distorted by adaptation. Either way, the first month of this is diagnosis rather than purchase, and a practice that does the diagnosis properly usually spends less afterwards, not more.
How long should the whole sequence take?
Give stage one as long as it needs and then wait two ordinary working weeks before starting stage two, which is the part people skip. If extraction improvements and a diffuser arrive in the same week, you will never know which of them did the work, and if the result disappoints you there is nothing to diagnose. Run the ventilation fixes alone, then walk in cold on a Monday morning and again at six on a Friday in a busy week. The first tells you what the building smells like at rest and the second tells you what a full week of studio and workshop life adds to it. Then decide what the fragrance is for and how little of it you need. Send us what you find on +91 96192 18531 and we will tell you which system fits.
Our lease is short and we cannot change the ventilation. Is this all pointless?
Not pointless, but the honest sequence changes. In a rented shell where a duct through the facade is not permitted, the levers you still have are behavioural and spatial rather than mechanical: move the loudest workshop operations to a different time of day or outdoors, reduce what is used at the bench, put a real partition and a door where a curtain currently is, keep the workshop door shut as a rule rather than a preference, and place any fragrance system as far from the bench as the plan allows. What we would not do is buy a larger machine to compensate, because that is spending money to make a complicated room more complicated. Do what the lease allows, keep the level low, and revisit the whole plan at the next move.
How do we keep this consistent as the practice grows?
Write down three things and keep them where the office manager can find them: which register you use, what setting the machine is on, and which rooms are on the list and which are not. Practices lose consistency at exactly three moments: when they take an extra floor or knock through a partition and the connected volume changes without anyone recalculating it, when a new office manager arrives and finds an unexplained machine, and when somebody buys a different fragrance because the usual one was not to hand. All three are solved by a note rather than a system. If you take more space, redo the arithmetic, because a connected volume that has doubled will need the setting revisited, and that is the moment to check whether a second unit in a separate volume is more sensible than turning one up.
Does any of this actually change what a client thinks of the practice?
Modestly, and we will not overstate it. Ambient scent research supports improved evaluations of a space and the service delivered in it, longer dwell and stronger recall, at moderate effect sizes, and it consistently finds that congruence and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting. It does not support any claim that fragrance wins work, raises fees or changes how a client judges a design, and anybody telling you otherwise is selling harder than the evidence allows. The reason to do it is closer to the reason you chose the door handle and the reception lighting: a practice that presents itself as considered should be considered in the medium that a visitor meets first, before they have seen a single drawing. And the practice gets a studio that smells composed on a Monday morning, which the team notice more than the clients do.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
