Ask where a diffuser should go and most people answer with furniture — the side table, the console, the shelf by the television. Those are answers about the room looking tidy. The physics answer is different and more useful: a diffuser only owns its fragrance for the first half-metre or so. After that, the room's own air decides where the scent goes, which means the right position is wherever that air is already moving.

Where should you place a diffuser in any room?
1. About a metre off the floor. A shelf, a console, a chest of drawers, a sideboard. Ultrasonic mist is denser than the air around it and settles within a short distance, so a machine on the ground delivers its output into the lowest part of the room where nobody is.

2. Where the air already moves. Every room has a path — from the door towards a window, or from the AC towards wherever the air returns. Put the machine on the upstream side of that path and the room distributes the fragrance for you. Put it in the stillest corner and the room does nothing.

3. Never in a direct draught. A ceiling fan on medium or a split AC blowing across the machine does not spread the scent — it takes the whole plume and pins it against one wall. Out of the line, not merely away from the unit.

4. A foot of clear space, on a hard surface. Mist that meets a wall or a curtain within a few inches condenses instead of evaporating, which wastes fragrance and leaves a damp mark. Hard, wipeable surface, not on fabric, not on wood you care about, and not next to a laptop or a speaker.

5. Then judge it from the doorway. You will always over-scent a room if you assess it standing next to the machine. Walk out, wait, walk back in, and take your reading from the first breath — that is what everyone else in the house experiences.

Why the room, not the machine, does most of the distributing

An ultrasonic diffuser works by vibrating a plate at around 2.4 megahertz, which shatters the water into droplets fine enough to hang in the air. That mist leaves the machine with a small amount of upward momentum, travels perhaps half a metre, and then two things happen at once: the droplets are heavier than the air around them so they begin to fall, and they evaporate, releasing the fragrance oil into the air as vapour. From that moment the machine has no further influence. The fragrance is now simply part of the room's air, and it goes wherever that air goes — which is decided by temperature differences, by the doorway, by the window, by the fan, and by nothing at all to do with how powerful the diffuser is.

That single fact reorganises the whole placement question. You are not choosing where to aim a machine; you are choosing where to inject fragrance into a system that is already circulating. In a still room the circulation is slow convection — warm air rising near sunlit walls and electronics, cooler air sinking near the floor and windows — and a machine placed a metre up sits in the middle of that gentle turnover. In a room with a door open and a window cracked there is a genuine current running through it, and a machine placed on the door side of the room is upstream of everything, while a machine at the window end is emptying its output straight outside. Neither situation is about power. Both are about position, which is why the most effective change available to almost anyone is free and takes four seconds.

Do not go too high either: at head height and above in a normal room you are releasing into the warm layer that collects at the ceiling, and in a room with a high ceiling that layer never comes back down. The test: if the scent is strong when you sit down and gone when you stand up, the machine is too low.

RULE TWO · AIRFLOW
Upstream of the room, and out of the blast
Two separate instructions live inside this rule and they are easy to confuse. The first is to place the machine where the room's air passes — generally the third of the room nearest the door, because that is where air enters and where anyone arriving forms their impression. A machine there is handing fragrance to a current that then carries it inward. A machine in the far corner behind an armchair is handing fragrance to the stillest air in the room, where it will sit at high concentration and go nowhere. The second instruction is the opposite in feel: keep it out of any forced draught. A ceiling fan on medium, a pedestal fan, or a split AC blowing across the top of the machine will take the entire plume and deposit it on one wall. Gentle, ambient movement distributes; a directed jet relocates.
The distinction: place it in air that is drifting, never in air that is being blown.

RULE THREE · CLEARANCE
A foot of space, and a surface you do not mind
Mist that hits something solid before it has evaporated condenses on it. Within a few inches of a wall you will get a faint damp patch and, over months, a mark; against a curtain you will get fragrance absorbed into fabric rather than released into air, which is both wasteful and the beginning of a smell you did not intend. Leave roughly a foot clear on every side and above. Put the machine on a hard, wipeable surface rather than directly on unsealed wood, on a rug, or on upholstery, and keep it away from laptops, speakers and anything with a vent — fine mist and electronics are a poor combination. If the only available surface is one you care about, a small ceramic tile or a coaster under the machine solves it entirely.

The SOSA principle

The machine owns the first half-metre. Everything after that is decided by the door, the window, the fan and the temperature of the walls.

Setting it up, and running it

Set the position before you set anything else. Fill the tank with filtered water in a hard-water city, add three to four drops of Hotel Collection to start, and stand the machine at your chosen spot for a full evening before deciding anything. A room takes thirty to forty minutes to reach a steady level, so judging a new position after ten minutes tells you nothing. If the result is uneven — obvious in one half, thin in the other — move the machine two or three feet towards the thin half and try again. Two or three evenings of this will beat any amount of reading, including this article.

Then match the running pattern to the room. A bedroom wants a short run before sleep rather than all night: the timer on a Sukoon gives you steady, two-hour and four-hour options, and two hours is usually plenty for a room you are about to close. A living room wants the machine on thirty to forty minutes before people arrive, with the door shut for that period, and then it can stay open. An entrance is the one place where a short, strong run works better than a long gentle one, because the whole event is four seconds long. Continuous running in a small room is the fastest way to stop noticing your own fragrance and start over-dosing it.

Maintenance is short but it protects the placement work. Rinse the tank when you change scent, wipe the plate weekly with a soft cloth, and empty the machine if it will sit unused for a few days. Never use raw essential or carrier oils in an ultrasonic — they are too viscous to atomise and will coat the plate. And keep the fragrance itself out of reach of children and pets; it is composed to IFRA standards for home diffusion, not for skin or ingestion. If you find a fine white dust settling around the machine, that is dissolved minerals from hard tap water, and filtered water removes the problem entirely.

The single most useful sentence I can offer anyone with a diffuser is this: pick it up and put it somewhere a metre higher. It costs nothing, it takes four seconds, and it fixes more complaints than any product I sell. Most machines in Indian homes are on the floor next to the socket, which is not a decision anybody made — it is where the cable reached.

What surprised me when I started paying attention to this was how little the machine matters once it is placed properly. The plate does its job for about half a metre and then the room takes over completely.
