When the building already has a character: scenting a heritage property without overwriting it
◆ ◆ ◆
What we answer
"Property with stone, wood, courtyards and a smell it has had for decades."
Record what it already smells of before adding anything, and protect that first
Existing character
What we answer
"Owner asks for a scent that says Rajasthan."
No. A costume scent dates faster than the building and reads as theatre
Register
What we specify
"Semi-open corridors and courtyards the owner wants scented."
Nothing. Air that leaves the space cannot hold fragrance at any setting
Open volumes
What we specify
"Reception, enclosed lounge and a corridor that is effectively outdoors."
Machines only in the enclosed volumes; the rest is left alone deliberately
Zoning
What we specify
"Lobby beside a courtyard with doors open all day."
Place deep, set from the doorway, and accept a shorter reach than the plan suggests
Airflow
What we answer
"Property that is beautiful and slightly musty in one wing."
That is a damp and ventilation job. Fragrance over it is a cover-up, and we will say so

Founder Diaries · SOSA Commercial Scenting Guides
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated September 2026
Before anything is installed there is a list of things worth protecting, and at least two of them are routinely lost in the first month of a scenting project.
Quick answers — read this first
What should a heritage hotel protect before scenting? The smells guests came for, the building's natural ventilation behaviour, the surfaces and textiles that would be affected by placement, and the availability of genuinely unscented areas for guests who want them.

What gets lost most often? The property's own character, because a machine set even slightly high in an enclosed reception will mask the stone and wood entirely, and the unscented option, because once every public room is scented there is nowhere to send a sensitive guest.

How should placement protect surfaces? Keep units off historic wood and textiles, away from direct airflow onto painted or lime-plastered surfaces, and out of sight lines. A waterless machine such as the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 avoids adding moisture, which matters in old buildings.
The short answer
Short answer: Protect the existing smells, the ventilation, the surfaces, and at least one genuinely unscented public room.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for one fully enclosed public room up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected volume, the Aangan at ₹25,999 for a large enclosed hall, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. Semi-open areas are specified as nothing at all.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with which of your areas are fully enclosed, their ceiling heights, whether doors stay open, and what the property already smells of - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
What should be preserved before a heritage hotel introduces commercial scenting?
Four things, and they are worth writing into the project brief before anything is ordered. First, the property's existing smells. Walk it early, record what each area contributes, and treat the good ones as features - cool stone, old teak, a courtyard after watering, the kitchen at the right hour. A machine set even slightly high in an enclosed reception will mask all of it, and it does not come back while the machine runs. Second, the ventilation behaviour. Old Jaipur buildings move air deliberately, through courtyards, jaali screens and cross-ventilation, and the temptation during a scenting project is to start closing things to make the fragrance hold. That trade is almost always bad: you are degrading the thermal comfort the building was designed around in order to retain a fragrance, and guests notice heat long before they notice scent. Third, the surfaces. Keep units off historic wood and textiles, avoid directing airflow onto lime plaster, painted surfaces or murals, run no cables across floors a guest walks on, and choose waterless diffusion so that no additional moisture is introduced into a building where damp is already a management problem. Fourth, and most often lost, the unscented option. Once every public room carries a register there is nowhere to seat a guest with a fragrance sensitivity, so keep at least one enclosed public room and a portion of guest rooms genuinely unscented, and offer them rather than waiting to be asked. Specification: a waterless SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 per enclosed room, placed high and out of sight lines, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. SOSA makes no claim about bookings, reviews or guest spend and is not affiliated with any hotel brand. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: the smells, the airflow, the surfaces, and one room that stays unscented.
Waterless matters in an old building: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 adds fragrance without adding humidity to a property that is already managing damp. From ₹299.

The preservation list

This is the chapter to read before the purchase order rather than after the first complaint.

Why this works
The preservation list
1 Record and protect what each area already smells of 2 Change nothing about the building's ventilation to make scent hold 3 Keep units off historic wood, textiles, plaster and out of sight lines 4 Keep one public room and some guest rooms genuinely unscented
The machine most Jaipur heritage properties use, and only in their enclosed rooms: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, under 38 dB, app and timer control, key-locked so the level cannot drift. Fragrance from ₹299.
01
The character you can lose in a week
Masking is quick and quiet
A reception set slightly high will cover the stone and wood completely, and because staff adapt within fifteen minutes nobody in the building will notice that it has happened. The property's own character disappears without anyone making a decision to remove it, which is why the early-morning walk and a written record of the existing smells belong in the project file before the machine arrives.
Tip: Nobody decides to remove the building's character. It just goes.
02
Do not trade comfort for retention
Closing the building is the wrong fix
When a fragrance will not hold, the instinct is to close doors, shutters or screens to reduce air movement. In a Rajasthani summer that trade costs you the thermal performance the architecture exists to provide, and a guest registers a stuffy room instantly and a faint scent not at all. Scent the rooms that already close, and leave the ventilation strategy of a three-hundred-year-old building alone.
03
Keeping somewhere unscented
It disappears if you do not plan it
Fragrance sensitivity is common enough that a hotel will encounter it regularly, and once every public room is scented there is nowhere to seat that guest. Designate one enclosed public room and a proportion of guest rooms as permanently unscented, write it into the plan, and offer it at booking rather than making a guest raise it at the desk. It costs nothing and it is the difference between a considered property and a thoughtless one.
Tip: Designate it in writing, or in a year there will be nowhere to sit.
The SOSA principle
Everything on this list is free, and two items on it are usually gone within a month of installation.
Which is why the list goes in the brief, not in the review.
SOSA Hotel Collection diffuser fragrance
What the machine runs on Hotel Collection diffuser fragrance from ₹299 Seven scents in 15ml, 100ml and 300ml. SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels - SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. See full specs →Size it on WhatsApp

What survives the installation

When those four are protected, the actual scenting decision is small and low-risk, which is the right size for it to be.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

The SOSA commercial range
Sized by air volume, not by ambition - from a ₹749 reed diffuser to the ₹38,500 Meenar

Honest notes for heritage properties: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning, damp remediation or source control. On an old building the correct first step is to identify what each area already smells of and to protect or repair that; a scent laid over damp, drains or deteriorating textiles is a cover-up and is not recommended. Fragrance introduced into a semi-open or outdoor volume is carried away by air that does not stay in the space, so it is spent rather than used. This is a physical limit and not a machine limit: no output setting makes an open courtyard hold a scent. Guest preference is personal and a hotel is a crowd environment, so restrained registers are recommended and unscented areas should be available. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases bookings, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, transaction value or guest spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where memory or association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it felt - and is not a commercial performance claim, nor a claim about mood, sleep, stress, calm or any other therapeutic effect. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser

A note from Sonal

Jaipur is the one city where my first answer is often that the property needs less than the owner thinks. A haveli or a palace hotel arrives with a smell it has earned - old stone that holds cool, wood, lime plaster, the courtyard after it has been watered, whatever grows in it. Guests are paying for exactly that, and it is very easy to spend eleven thousand rupees covering it up.

So the sequence I use here is backwards from everywhere else. Walk the property at seven in the morning and write down what each area already smells of. Protect the ones that are lovely. Fix the ones that are not, at the source, because damp and drains and old textiles are not a fragrance problem. Only then look at the two or three fully enclosed rooms where a low background would genuinely help, which is usually reception and an indoor lounge, and almost never a corridor open to a courtyard.

The honest limits. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand, and I make no claim about bookings, reviews or guest spend. If you run a heritage property in Jaipur and want to know which rooms are worth scenting and which are not, WhatsApp me on +91 96192 18531. Frequently asked questions

What should be preserved before scenting a heritage hotel?
The property's existing smells, its natural ventilation behaviour, its historic surfaces, and at least one genuinely unscented public room.
What is lost most often?
The building's own character, because a slightly high setting masks stone and wood while staff have already adapted and cannot detect it.
Should doors be closed to help fragrance hold?
No. That degrades the thermal comfort the architecture provides, and guests register a stuffy room far faster than they register a faint scent.
Does a waterless machine matter in an old building?
It avoids adding humidity to a property that is usually already managing damp, and it removes a maintenance and spillage risk near historic surfaces.
How many unscented areas should a hotel keep?
At least one enclosed public room and a proportion of guest rooms, designated in writing and offered at booking. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
