By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 10 min read Updated August 2026
Before you recommend a machine to a client, there are six things worth knowing, and only one of them is about fragrance. The other five are the questions you already ask about every product you specify: how much of the space does it actually serve, does it need water, does it need power and from where, what arrives in the box, and what does the client have to buy again. Add the question no other trade asks and every designer asks first - what does it look like, and where can it be hidden - and you have the whole brief.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I size a scent machine for a client's home or office? By connected volume, never by floor area. Multiply the floor area of the rooms that genuinely share air by the finished ceiling height to get cubic feet, then divide by 35.3 for cubic metres. A 1,200 sq ft apartment at a ten-foot ceiling is 12,000 cubic feet, about 340 cubic metres - but if the bedrooms are behind doors, the connected entrance, living and dining volume might be 600 sq ft, which is 6,000 cubic feet, about 170 cubic metres. Height is the variable people forget: the same 600 sq ft under an eighteen-foot double-height volume is 10,800 cubic feet, about 306 cubic metres, and a machine sized for the flat-ceiling version will read as absent. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated at roughly 1000 cubic metres of connected air.

Does a scent machine need water, and does that matter in a finished interior? It matters more than anything else on this list. An ultrasonic diffuser works by atomising water, so it adds humidity to the room, and in a hard-water area it deposits a fine white mineral dust on nearby surfaces as the mist dries. In a client's finished interior that means visible film on stone, on polished veneer, on lacquer and on glass, and it means moisture near fresh paint, artwork and upholstery. It is manageable with distilled or filtered water, sensible placement and regular cleaning, and it is genuinely fine in a bathroom or a small study. The Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is waterless cold-air nebulising: no tank, no added humidity and no mineral deposit, which is why it is the one that goes into a finished scheme.

What does the machine look like, and can it be hidden? The SOSA Vaayu is a compact freestanding unit that can also lay flat, and it is designed to be wall mounted or mounted into an HVAC duct, which is usually the designer's answer because it removes the object from the room altogether. It runs on DC 12V / 1A, about 5W, so the power provision is small but real and the socket has to be within reach of wherever you put it. What it cannot do is sit sealed inside a closed cabinet: nebulised air has to leave the unit and reach the room, so a fully enclosed niche with no opening will not work. A slot, a grille, an open shelf or a duct will.
The short answer
Short answer: Six checks before specifying a scent machine: size by connected volume rather than floor area (floor area x finished ceiling height, divided by 35.3 for cubic metres); confirm the ceiling height, because it is the multiplier people forget; decide whether it needs water, since an ultrasonic adds humidity and in hard-water areas leaves white mineral dust near stone, veneer and fresh paint; confirm mains power and where the socket is (Vaayu is DC 12V / 1A, about 5W); check what is in the box; and check what the client rebuys. No Vaayu running cost can be quoted because no standalone waterless refill is published - ask on WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. Vaayu Rs 11,999, ultrasonics from Rs 1,899, registers from Rs 299, reeds from Rs 749.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
What do I need to check before I recommend a scent machine to a client?
Six checks, in the order that changes the answer. 1. Connected volume, not floor area. Measure only the rooms that share air. Floor area in square feet times finished ceiling height in feet gives cubic feet; divide by 35.3 for cubic metres. A 600 sq ft connected entrance, living and dining at ten feet is 6,000 cubic feet, about 170 cubic metres. 2. Then the height. The same 600 sq ft under an eighteen-foot double-height volume is 10,800 cubic feet, about 306 cubic metres. Height is a multiplier, not a rounding error, and it is the commonest reason a correctly chosen machine underperforms. 3. Water or waterless. An ultrasonic atomises water: it adds humidity and, in hard-water areas, leaves a fine white mineral film on whatever sits near it. In a finished interior with stone, polished veneer, lacquer and fresh paint, that is a specification consequence, not a nuisance. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is waterless cold-air nebulising - no tank, no humidity, no deposit. 4. Power, and where the socket is. Vaayu runs on DC 12V / 1A, about 5W. Small load, real socket, decided at drawing stage. Reeds from ₹749 need none. 5. What is in the box. The Vaayu ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends, chosen as one of three bundles at checkout. An ultrasonic such as the Sukoon (₹1,899) is the machine only; the water-based Hotel Collection is bought separately from ₹299. 6. What the client rebuys. For the ultrasonics that is published: 100ml ₹999, 300ml ₹1,799, or the pack of seven 15ml at ₹1,799. For the Vaayu it is not - no standalone waterless refill bottle is listed, so no running cost, consumption rate or refill frequency can honestly be quoted here. Ask on WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 and get the current answer from the studio. And the question you will ask first: it is freestanding, it lays flat, and it wall or HVAC mounts. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: connected volume not floor area, height is a multiplier, water means humidity and white dust, Vaayu is waterless at DC 12V / 1A and 5W, and no Vaayu running cost is published. Vaayu ₹11,999, registers from ₹299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The commercial standard most businesses choose: the SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air scenting to ~1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer, one signature on schedule - at ₹11,999. Single rooms and consultation corners start on reeds from ₹749; cabin systems from ₹1,899; large-premises HVAC from ₹25,999. The checklist, in the order that changes the answer

Three of the six checks decide the specification: the volume arithmetic, the water question, and the physical object with its socket and its recurring cost.

Why this works
The six checks, before you put a machine on a drawing
1Connected volume, not floor area: sq ft x finished height, then / 35.3 for m32Water means humidity and, in hard water, white dust on stone and veneer3Power and position: Vaayu is DC 12V / 1A, about 5W, freestanding or mounted4What recurs: ultrasonic refills from Rs 999. No Vaayu figure is published
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The arithmetic
Connected volume, and the height everybody forgets
Every coverage rating on every machine assumes one connected body of air, and almost no interior is one connected body of air. So do the sum twice. First the number the client will quote at you: a 1,200 sq ft apartment at a ten-foot ceiling is 12,000 cubic feet, which divided by 35.3 is about 340 cubic metres. Then the number that matters: if three bedrooms and two bathrooms sit behind doors, what is actually connected is the entrance, the living room and the dining area, perhaps 600 sq ft, which at ten feet is 6,000 cubic feet, about 170 cubic metres. That is what you are buying against, and it is half of what the client thinks. Now the correction in the other direction, which is the one that catches designers out, because it is our own doing. Height is a multiplier. The same 600 sq ft under a fifteen-foot volume is 9,000 cubic feet, about 255 cubic metres; under an eighteen-foot double-height living room with a mezzanine gallery it is 10,800 cubic feet, about 306 cubic metres, and warm air carries the fragrance up into the void where nobody is standing. A machine sized against the plan will read as absent in that room. Measure the finished ceiling, not the slab, and remember that your own false ceiling for services has usually taken nine or ten inches out of the number in your favour.
Tip: floor area is the number the client quotes; connected volume at the finished ceiling height is the number you specify against.
2
Water
Humidity and white dust are specification consequences, not quirks
This is the check that belongs to designers rather than to buyers, because you are the only person in the room who will still be looking at the surfaces in two years. An ultrasonic diffuser produces its mist by vibrating water at high frequency, which means two things follow it around. The first is humidity: it is adding moisture to the room, in small amounts, continuously, which is unremarkable in a bathroom or a monsoon-dry air-conditioned study and is worth thinking about beside a freshly painted wall, a stretched fabric panel, unsealed timber, paper-based artwork or anything hygroscopic. The second is the one people discover afterwards. Hard water carries dissolved minerals, and when the mist lands and dries, the minerals stay: a fine white film that shows up first on dark stone, polished veneer, lacquer, mirror and glass, in a halo around the machine. Much of India is hard-water territory. It is not a disaster and it is not a reason to avoid ultrasonics, which are excellent, inexpensive and correct in plenty of rooms - distilled or filtered water, a sensible distance from the nearest surface and a weekly wipe manage it completely. But it is a fact you should know before you put one on a console you detailed, and it is the single clearest reason the Vaayu (₹11,999) is the machine that goes into a finished scheme: waterless cold-air nebulising, no tank to fill, no moisture added, nothing to deposit.
3
The object
What it looks like, where it hides, what it draws, what recurs
The question nobody else asks first. The SOSA Vaayu is a compact unit that stands freestanding, can lay flat if the shelf is shallow, and is designed to be wall mounted or mounted into an HVAC duct - and the mounted options are usually the right answer for a designer, because they take the object out of the room and put the fragrance into the air handling instead. It draws DC 12V / 1A, about 5W, so the electrical provision is trivial and the socket location is not: decide it at drawing stage, next to the position you have chosen, not on the day. The one thing it cannot do is live inside a sealed cabinet, because the nebulised air has to get out; a slot, a grille, an open shelf or a duct is required, and a closed niche with no opening simply will not work. Then what recurs, and here we are going to be plainly incomplete. On the ultrasonic side the numbers are published and you can quote them to a client: the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299, 100ml at ₹999, 300ml at ₹1,799, or the pack of seven 15ml bottles at ₹1,799. Reeds from ₹749 last roughly six to ten weeks. On the Vaayu, no standalone waterless refill bottle is published, which means no running cost, no consumption rate and no refill interval can be stated on this page without inventing it. It ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends chosen as one of three bundles at checkout, and for anything beyond that you ask the studio on WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 and get the live answer.
Tip: it mounts on a wall or into HVAC, draws about 5W, and cannot live in a sealed cabinet - those three facts decide where it goes on your drawing.
The SOSA principle
Five of the six checks have nothing to do with fragrance. They are the questions you already ask about every product you specify - volume, water, power, contents, recurring cost.
Ask them in that order and the machine chooses itself. Ask about the scent first and you will end up defending a choice you made before you knew the ceiling height.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Can the machine be concealed inside joinery?
Partly, and the distinction matters. It can sit inside a niche, a cabinet or a console as long as the air it produces has a way out: a slot, a grille, a gap at the top, an open shelf, or a duct if you are mounting it into the air handling. What will not work is a fully sealed enclosure with a closed door, because a nebuliser puts a dry aerosol into the air and that aerosol has to reach the room rather than settle inside your cabinet. The two options that solve it properly are wall mounting, which keeps the unit off any surface and out of eye line, and HVAC mounting, which removes the object from the room completely and distributes through the ducts. If you are detailing a niche for it, treat it the way you would treat a niche for an amplifier: think about the opening before you think about the reveal.
We are in a hard-water city. Does that rule out ultrasonic diffusers entirely?
No, it just puts them in the right rooms. Ultrasonics are inexpensive, quiet and completely appropriate in a bathroom, a utility area, a small study or a bedroom where the surfaces around them are not the point of the room. Use distilled or filtered water rather than tap, keep the unit at a sensible distance from the nearest hard surface rather than on the console you spent a month detailing, and expect a wipe-down as part of normal cleaning. Where they are the wrong specification is a finished living room full of dark stone, polished veneer, lacquer, mirror and glass, because the white mineral film is most visible on exactly those finishes. In that room the waterless machine is not a luxury, it is the correct answer to a technical problem.
What is the running cost for a client after the machine goes in?
For the ultrasonic side you can quote it, because it is published: the water-based Hotel Collection is Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, with a pack of seven 15ml bottles at Rs 1,799, and reeds from Rs 749 run roughly six to ten weeks. For the Vaayu we cannot give you a figure and will not invent one. No standalone waterless refill bottle is published, so there is no listed price to quote, and any consumption rate we offered would depend on the setting, the schedule and the volume of the room in ways that would make it a guess rather than a number. It ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends chosen as one of three bundles at checkout. For the current position on refills, message the studio on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 rather than putting an estimate in a client document.
How much power does it need, and does it have to be on a switched socket?
The Vaayu runs on DC 12V / 1A, which is about 5W - less than a phone charger under load, and small enough that it makes no meaningful difference to a client's electricity bill. It does need a real socket within reach of wherever it sits, which is the part that has to be designed rather than discovered. A switched socket is convenient but not the main control, because the machine has its own Bluetooth app and timer: the correct pattern is a schedule set once in the app, on before the space is used and off after, rather than a client remembering a switch. What a switched socket does give you is a physical, obvious way to kill it, which is worth having for exactly the client who will not open an app.
What should I ask the client before specifying any of this?
Four questions, and none of them are about scent. Who lives or works in the space, including children, elderly relatives, anyone pregnant, anyone with asthma, migraine or fragrance sensitivity, and pets. Which rooms are actually open to each other with the doors as they will normally be kept, because that is your connected volume. What the finished ceiling height is in the room you care about, especially if there is a double-height volume or a mezzanine. And what they dislike, which is a far more useful answer than what they like. Then, and only then, shortlist a register. If any answer to the first question gives you pause, the correct specification may be reeds in a single room, or nothing at all in that space, and that is a legitimate outcome rather than a lost sale.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
