Most practices approach this as a shopping question and it is really a sequencing question. The difference matters because the first two items on the correct list are not products, the third one costs Rs 749, and the room most people want to buy for is the one room that should never be scented at all. Here is the order, with what each stage costs, what it fixes, and how to know you are ready for the next one. It is the pillar for this section, so the detailed pages are linked at each step rather than repeated.
Quick answers — read this first
What should an interior design practice buy first for scenting the studio? Nothing, in the first stage. The first purchase is extraction, ventilation and a cleaning routine that runs during the day rather than only at night, because no scenting survives stale, damp or solvent-laden air and fragrance laid over any of those produces a cover-up that everyone reads accurately. Once the air is genuinely clean, the buying order is: the client-facing rooms first - the entrance, the reception and the meeting or consultation room - then the studio floor where the team work, at a quieter level, then washrooms and closed cabins on reeds from Rs 749. The material library and any open sampling area are never on the list.
How much does it cost to scent a design studio properly? It depends entirely on which stage you are buying. A closed meeting room and a washroom on reed diffusers is Rs 749 to Rs 849 a bottle and needs no power at all. A compact entrance or a single enclosed meeting room on a Sukoon ultrasonic is Rs 1,899 plus a water-based Hotel Collection register from Rs 299, or Rs 3,499 for the 6L Megh in a larger single room. A connected front of house held at one even level all day is a SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999, waterless, with a Bluetooth app and timer. Above roughly 1000 cubic metres of connected air you are into HVAC territory: SOSA Aangan at Rs 25,999 for approximately 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft, SOSA Meenar at Rs 38,500 for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft.
Which parts of a design studio should never be scented? The material library, first and permanently. Textiles, leather, unsealed timber, paper and foam absorb ambient fragrance and carry it out of the building in a client's hand, which corrupts the samples you are asking a client to judge. The same applies to an open sampling bench, where the answer is distance, airflow and a low dose instead of a door. A workshop end with solvent, adhesive, spray lacquer or MDF dust is also off the list, because extraction is the correct response to those and fragrance is not. And any store where finished client goods or upholstery are held before delivery stays unscented for the same reason as the library.
The short answer
Short answer: Buy in order. First, ventilation, extraction and daytime cleaning, which are not products and which nothing else works without. Second, the client-facing rooms: entrance, reception and the meeting or consultation room, where a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 with a register from Rs 299, or a SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 for a connected front of house, does the work. Third, the studio floor where the team work, quieter, calibrated by the people in it. Fourth, washrooms and closed cabins on reeds from Rs 749. Never the material library, never an open sampling rack, never a workshop end with solvent or dust. Above about 1000 cubic metres of connected air, HVAC: Aangan Rs 25,999, Meenar Rs 38,500. The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
What should a design practice actually buy to scent its studio, and in what order?
Five stages, and you do not skip one. Stage 0 - the two things that are not products. Ventilation and extraction that work, and cleaning that happens during the day rather than only at night. No scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor air quality, and fragrance over solvent, damp or stale air produces a cover-up that everyone in the room reads correctly. Cost: whatever your building needs. Skip it and everything below is wasted. Stage 1 - the client-facing rooms. The entrance, the reception and the meeting or consultation room, in that order, because that is the sequence a client walks. A closed meeting room runs happily on a Sukoon (₹1,899) with a water-based register from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299); a connected entrance and front of house wants a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), waterless, app and timer, rated to about 1000m³ of connected air. Stage 2 - the studio floor. Only after stage 1, and quieter. Your team are in that air for a full working day and are the most exposed people in the building, so they set the level and any sensitivity report drops it. Stage 3 - washrooms and closed cabins.Reeds from ₹749, about six to ten weeks, no power, nothing to schedule. Stage 4 - never. The material library, open sample racks, the workshop end, and any store holding finished client goods. Not first, not last, not ever. If your connected volume is past a single Vaayu, the answer is Aangan (₹25,999, approximately 8,000-10,000 sq ft) or Meenar (₹38,500, 12,000-18,000 sq ft), or multiple units zoned. We make no claim that any of this influences a specification decision, an approval or a sale. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with a plan. The buying order, and why it is an order rather than a list
Three parts: why the first two purchases are not products, why the client-facing rooms come before your own desks, and the one room that stays off the list permanently.
Why this works
The buying order for a design practice
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
Every practice that has been disappointed by a diffuser bought it at stage one and skipped stage zero. Stage zero is air handling and cleaning, and in a design studio it is not an abstraction: there is a printer that runs hot, there is a bench with adhesive and lacquer on it, there is a storage room that never gets aired, there is a pantry, and in most Indian offices there is a morning mopping that leaves a phenyl note hanging until eleven. Ambient scent research is consistent on this point and it is worth taking literally - no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Practically that means extraction over any bench where solvent or dust is generated, a working ventilation strategy rather than a sealed box with a split unit in it, cleaning scheduled during the working day rather than only at night, waste that leaves the building daily, and somewhere for the printer and the plotter that is not the middle of the room. None of this is a purchase you enjoy making. All of it is worth more than the machine that comes next, and the test for whether you are ready is simple: walk in cold on a Monday morning before anyone arrives, and again at five on a Friday. If the second walk smells of anything you would not choose, you are still in stage zero.
Tip: walk in cold on a Monday and again at five on a Friday - if the Friday walk smells of anything you would not choose, you are still at stage zero.
2
Stages one and two
The client-facing rooms, then your own desks, and not the other way round
The order here is about who the room is for. Stage one is the sequence a client actually walks: the entrance, the reception if you have one, and the meeting or consultation room where they sit down. That is where an unremarkable studio starts feeling like a considered one, and it is also the smallest volume, which makes it the cheapest thing to do properly. A single closed meeting room runs on a Sukoon (₹1,899) with a register from ₹299 and nothing else; an entrance and reception that share air with a lounge or a display area is a Megh (₹3,499) at the top of the ultrasonic range or, properly, a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) at about 1000m³ of connected air, waterless, on an app schedule so it comes on before the studio opens and goes off after it closes. Do the volume arithmetic before you choose: connected floor area in square feet times finished ceiling height in feet, divided by 35.3 for cubic metres - a 600 sq ft front of house at ten feet is 6,000 cubic feet, about 170 cubic metres. Stage two is the studio floor where your own team sit, and it comes second for a reason that is not sentimental: they are in that air eight or nine hours a day, six days a week, which is far longer than any client, so the level there is set by them and not by you. Whisper calibration, a locked setting, and a standing rule that any sensitivity report from a team member drops the level rather than starting a debate.
3
Stage four
The room you most want to scent is the one that never gets it
There is a room in every practice that the whole idea seems designed for: the material library. It is beautiful, it is full of texture, clients love being taken into it, and it usually smells faintly of cardboard and old adhesive. It is also the one room in the building that must stay unscented permanently. The reason is not preference, it is contamination. Fabric, leather, unsealed timber, paper board, felt and foam are porous and take up ambient fragrance over weeks; then the swatch leaves. It goes into a client's hand at a meeting, into a presentation box, into a courier bag to a mill, into the decision about what a family's sofa will be, carrying an added smell nobody selected and no one can now remove. A client comparing three fabrics that all smell faintly of white tea and cedar is not comparing them cleanly. That is the argument in full on the material library page, and the same logic extends to an open sampling bench, where you cannot close a door and have to use distance, airflow and a low dose instead. It also covers the workshop end, where solvent, adhesive, spray lacquer and MDF dust belong to extraction rather than to fragrance, and any store holding finished client goods or upholstery before delivery. Four rooms, one rule, and the rule does not bend for a client visit. Reeds from ₹749 are for washrooms and closed cabins, not for storage.
Tip: the material library is never scented - not lightly, not for a client visit, not ever, because the samples leave the building carrying whatever you put in the air.
The SOSA principle
It is a sequence, not a shopping list. Ventilation, then the rooms clients sit in, then your own desks, then the washrooms - and the material library never.
Every stage is a smaller purchase than the one people assume they need, and the first two are not purchases at all.

The SOSA commercial edit
Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.
Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Can we skip straight to the machine if our studio is new and the air is fine?
If the air is genuinely fine then you have already done stage zero, which is the point of it rather than a hurdle for its own sake. Test it honestly before you decide: walk in cold on a Monday morning before anyone arrives, and again at five on a Friday after a full week of printing, cutting, sample handling and lunch at the desks. A new fit-out has its own complications too, because fresh paint, new adhesive, new carpet and new joinery all off-gas for weeks, and putting a fragrance on top of that is the classic expensive mistake in a new studio. Give a new space air and time first. If both walk-throughs smell of nothing you would not choose, buy at stage one and go straight to the rooms clients sit in.
What if we only have budget for one thing this year?
Then buy the meeting room. It is the smallest volume, it is the room where a client sits down for an hour rather than passing through, and a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 with a water-based register from Rs 299 does the whole job for under Rs 2,200 if the room is enclosed. A reed diffuser from Rs 749 in the same room is a legitimate answer too, needs no power, no socket and no schedule, and lasts roughly six to ten weeks. What we would not do with a single year's budget is buy a large machine for an open studio floor while the meeting room stays untouched, because the studio floor is where your team are and the meeting room is where the decisions happen. Small and correct beats large and approximate.
How do we know when we have outgrown one Vaayu?
Do the arithmetic on connected air rather than on the lease. Connected floor area in square feet times the finished ceiling height in feet gives cubic feet, and dividing by 35.3 gives cubic metres; the Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated to roughly 1000 cubic metres of connected air. A 2,000 sq ft studio at ten feet is 20,000 cubic feet, about 566 cubic metres, which is comfortably inside that if it is genuinely open. The same 2,000 sq ft under an eighteen-foot volume in a converted industrial floor is 36,000 cubic feet, about 1,020 cubic metres, which is past it. And a studio split into four rooms with doors is not one volume at all, so the honest answer there may be two smaller machines rather than one big one. Past a single unit, the options are the Aangan at Rs 25,999 for approximately 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft on HVAC, the Meenar at Rs 38,500 for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft, or several Vaayu units zoned. Send the plan to +91 96192 18531 and we will work it out with you.
Does scenting the studio help us win work?
We will not claim that. Ambient scent research supports improved evaluations of a space and the service delivered in it, longer dwell and stronger recall, at moderate effect sizes, and congruence and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting. It does not support any claim that fragrance influences a specification decision, a client approval, a pitch outcome or a sale, and there is nothing published about design practices that would let us say otherwise. The defensible reason to do it is narrower: you ask clients to trust your judgement about how a space should feel, and the space you are making that argument in is currently the one you have thought about least. Fixing that is worth doing for its own sake, and it costs less than most practices assume.
Who in the practice should own the settings once it is installed?
One named person, and preferably not the founder. The mechanism that ruins studio air is olfactory adaptation: everyone who works in a scented room stops noticing it within a fortnight, concludes the machine has failed, and turns it up, then repeats that three weeks later. The defence is procedural. Write the setting down, set the schedule once in the app on a Vaayu or fix the drop count on an ultrasonic, and make any change a conversation rather than a switch. Judge the room only from outside, only in the morning, and against what visitors say rather than what the team feel. And make it explicit that any team member can report a sensitivity and have the level dropped that day without justifying it, because the people at the desks are the most exposed occupants of the building and their comfort outranks the atmosphere.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.
Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
