Book four appointments into a Saturday, set the machine at nine and leave it alone, and the buyer at five o'clock walks into a noticeably stronger flat than the buyer at half past ten did. Nothing changed. You did not touch the setting, the machine did not develop a fault, and the register is the same one. What changed is that the flat has been accumulating for seven hours in a room that has been warming since noon, and that the only person who cannot tell is you. Running a machine across a full viewing block is not a set-and-forget job. It is a step-down job, and almost everybody steps it the wrong way.
Quick answers — read this first
Can you leave a scent machine running all day during a weekend of viewings? You can run it all day, but not at one setting. In a closed flat the concentration builds towards a plateau rather than sitting still: with the property shut and a low air-change rate, the level after two hours is roughly two thirds of where it will end up, after four hours about eighty-five per cent, and after six hours around ninety-five. Meanwhile the flat warms through the afternoon, which raises evaporation, so the same setting delivers more. The result is a room that gets steadily stronger to every fresh nose that walks in. Step the setting down through the day rather than up.
Why does a property smell stronger in the afternoon than in the morning? Three reasons stacked on each other. Accumulation: a closed flat exchanges its air slowly, so a constant source keeps building towards a plateau for hours. Temperature: an Indian flat at four in the afternoon is warmer than the same flat at ten in the morning, and warmer air raises the evaporation rate of everything volatile in the room. And adaptation: you have been in the property since nine and stopped smelling it before the first appointment, so you have no way of noticing any of it from the inside. Every buyer arrives with a fresh nose that you no longer have.
How do I calibrate a diffuser across a full day of viewings? By leaving the building. Walk out to the landing or the street for five minutes, come back in through the front door, and judge the flat the way a buyer meets it. Do that before the first appointment and again roughly every two hours. Between appointments, open the front door and a window for five minutes to flush the previous group's own fragrances. Step the setting down at the two-thirds point of the day, and for the last appointment consider switching the machine off entirely and letting what the flat already holds carry it. A colleague arriving at two in the afternoon is a free and honest instrument - ask them.
The short answer
Short answer: A machine left on one setting for eight hours gets progressively stronger to a fresh nose even though nothing changed. In a closed flat the level builds towards a plateau: roughly two thirds of the way there after two hours, about eighty-five per cent after four and ninety-five after six. The flat also warms through the afternoon, which raises evaporation, and your own nose adapted before the first appointment. So step the setting DOWN through the day, never up. Judge it by walking out and coming back in through the front door every couple of hours, flush the flat for five minutes between appointments, and consider switching off for the last viewing. Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
I am showing one flat all day Saturday. How do I keep the level right from the first viewing to the last?
Step it down, on a schedule you decide in advance. 08:45 - open everything. Cross-ventilate for forty minutes, clean, fill every floor trap, check the drip trays, start the air-conditioning. Nothing goes on until the flat has been aired; fragrance over a closed-up smell is worse than either on its own, and it never fixes a defect. 09:30 - close up and start low. Stand the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, waterless, app and timer) on the console a few metres inside the entrance and set it at the lowest usable output. 10:15 - judge it cold. Go down to the landing, wait two minutes, come back in through the front door. That is the buyer's experience and it is the only honest reading you will get all day, because your nose has already begun to adapt. 10:30 - first appointment.Between appointments - flush for five minutes. Front door and one window open, which clears the previous group's own perfumes and resets a little of the accumulation. 12:30 - step down one setting. Three hours in, the flat is well past halfway to its plateau and the afternoon warmth is starting. 14:30 - step down again, or switch off between viewings. By now the property holds a reservoir: curtains, upholstery and a warm slab do not forget the last five hours, so the room does not go unscented ten minutes after the machine stops. In an empty flat with hard floors it drops faster - that is worth knowing before you switch off there. 17:00 - the last appointment may need nothing at all. Run it off, or at the lowest setting, and trust what the flat is already carrying. The rule underneath all of it: the direction of travel is downwards. If at any point you feel the urge to turn it up, that is adaptation talking, and the correct response is to walk out of the building and come back in. If you have a headache by four, the setting was wrong at ten. Heavy scent in a viewing reads as concealment, and it reads that way most strongly to the buyer who arrives last. Why nothing changed and everything got stronger
Three things move across an eight-hour block and all three push the same way: the concentration builds, the flat warms, and your own nose stops reporting.
Why this works
The step-down schedule for an all-day viewing block
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
A constant source in a closed flat does not hold a level, it climbs to one
The mental model most people carry is that a machine at setting two produces a level-two room within a few minutes and then holds it. That is not how a closed volume behaves. A source releasing at a constant rate into a room that is losing air slowly does not sit still; it climbs towards an equilibrium where what is going in matches what is leaking out, and how long that takes depends entirely on how fast the flat exchanges its air. Take a closed viewing route of about 390 cubic metres at half an air change an hour, which is a reasonable figure for a shut-up flat with the windows closed and the air-conditioning recirculating. The time constant of that system is the volume divided by the exchange rate, which is two hours. Approach to equilibrium follows the usual curve: after one time constant you are at about sixty-three per cent of the final level, after two you are at about eighty-six, and after three you are at roughly ninety-five. In plain terms, the flat at half past eleven is nowhere near where the flat at half past three will be, with the identical setting and the identical machine. Treat those numbers as an illustration of the shape rather than a measurement of your property - real flats leak around doors, people come and go, and the air-conditioning has its own opinion - but the shape is the point and it is not in dispute. A setting judged as correct at the first appointment is by construction too strong by the fourth, and the machine has done nothing wrong.
Tip: the first viewing meets about two thirds of the level the last viewing will meet - with nobody touching the setting.
2
The heat
The same setting delivers more at four in the afternoon
Layered on top of the accumulation is a second effect that pushes in the same direction. An Indian flat is not thermally static across a day. A west-facing living room takes the afternoon sun through the glazing; the slab above a top-floor apartment has been absorbing heat since noon and starts giving it back into the rooms; a closed flat with the air-conditioning fighting a full day of solar gain settles at a higher internal temperature by four than it held at ten. Evaporation is temperature dependent, and everything volatile in that room responds - the fragrance being released, but also the flat's own background: floor polish, new paint, timber, the residue of the last cleaning, the kitchen. A room that is two or three degrees warmer is a room in which the whole olfactory picture is turned up slightly, not just your machine. This is also why the afternoon is when a property's own smells reassert themselves, and it is worth separating the two before you reach for a setting: if the flat smells stronger at four but the character has changed as well, that is the building talking, not the diffuser, and the answer is ventilation between appointments rather than a lower output. If the character is identical and only the volume has risen, that is accumulation and warmth doing exactly what this page describes. Either way the correction is downwards or outwards, never upwards.
3
The nose
You adapted before the first buyer arrived, and you never recover during the day
Olfactory adaptation is fast and it is complete. Twenty minutes of standing in a scented room and a healthy nose stops reporting the smell almost entirely, and it does not come back while you remain in the room. You arrived at a quarter to nine. By the first appointment at half past ten you have been in that flat for nearly two hours, and from that moment on you are the least qualified person in the building to judge its air. Every buyer, by contrast, arrives with a completely fresh nose, off the street or out of a lift lobby, and meets the room at full value. That asymmetry is the whole reason all-day blocks go wrong: the person with the app in their hand is the only one who cannot perceive the thing they are adjusting. The defence is procedural. Leave the building - the landing is enough, the street is better - wait two or three minutes, and walk back in through the front door the way a buyer does. Do that before the first appointment and every couple of hours after. Use anyone who arrives fresh as an instrument: a colleague who turns up at two, the photographer, the owner. Ask them before they settle in, because they have about twenty minutes of useful nose. And write your step-downs into the schedule in advance, at fixed times, so that they happen whether or not you can smell anything - a Vaayu (₹11,999) makes each one a two-second change from the app, which is why an app matters more on an eight-hour block than on a single viewing. If you finish the day with a headache, that is not a long Saturday. That is your own body telling you the setting was a notch too high at ten in the morning.
Tip: if you can still smell it at two in the afternoon, it is much too strong - your nose stopped reporting hours ago.
The SOSA principle
Nothing changed, and it got stronger anyway. Across a full day the only safe direction for the setting is down.
Concentration climbs towards a plateau, the flat warms through the afternoon, and your nose stopped reporting before the first buyer arrived. Schedule the step-downs in advance and judge the room only from outside the front door.

The SOSA commercial edit
Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.
Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Should I switch the machine off between appointments instead of running it continuously?
It is a reasonable strategy in the second half of the day and usually unnecessary in the first. Early on, the flat is still climbing towards its level and switching off simply resets progress you want. From the middle of the afternoon, when accumulation and warmth have done their work, running the machine only in the gaps or switching it off entirely between viewings is a sensible way to hold a level rather than push past it. What you should do between every appointment regardless is open the front door and one window for five minutes, which clears the previous buyer's own perfume and deodorant from the room and gives you a small reset. A flat that has held four separate groups of people since morning is carrying more than what your machine put in it.
If I turn the machine off, does the property stop smelling of anything?
Not immediately, and how quickly it fades depends almost entirely on what is in the flat. A furnished property holds a reservoir: curtains, upholstery, rugs, cushions and even a warm slab release slowly for a long time after the source stops, which is why a furnished flat scented since morning can be switched off for the last appointment and still read as composed. An empty flat with hard floors, bare walls and no soft furnishings holds far less and drops much faster, because there is nothing to absorb and re-release. So the step-down schedule should be gentler in an empty property and can be more aggressive in a furnished one. If you are unsure, do it once as a test on a day with no viewings: switch off, leave, come back after forty minutes and judge it from the door.
How long can the machine safely run in one day?
That is a question about the unit and the fragrance rather than about presentation, and it is the sort of thing we would rather answer for your specific pattern than publish as a general figure. What this page can tell you is the presentation answer: the constraint on an eight-hour block is almost never the machine's endurance, it is the room's tolerance. A flat that has had a diffuser running at a fixed setting since nine in the morning will be too strong by late afternoon long before anything about the equipment becomes the limiting factor. Set the schedule around the room, not around the runtime. For anything on consumption, refill behaviour or how a bottle performs across a full weekend of use, WhatsApp us on +91 96192 18531 and we will answer it properly rather than with a number that would not survive contact with your flat.
The owner keeps turning the setting up between viewings. How do I handle it?
It is a common problem and it has the same cause as your own instinct to do it: an owner who has been in the flat all morning cannot smell the fragrance either, concludes it has stopped, and helps. Explain the mechanism rather than asking them not to touch it, because the mechanism is genuinely interesting and it changes behaviour in a way that an instruction does not - the nose adapts within twenty minutes, so anyone inside the flat is the wrong judge, and a level that seems absent to them is at full value to the buyer walking in from the street. Then give them something to do that is actually useful: opening the windows for five minutes between appointments, checking the traps, resetting the cushions. If the property is one you have a resident machine in, agree at the outset that the setting is yours to change and nobody else's.
Does the register need to change for a long day, or only the setting?
Only the setting. Changing register partway through a day produces two atmospheres in one property and a collision for anyone who visits twice, and a second viewer who notices that the flat smells different from last time starts wondering what else has changed - which is the last question you want in the room. Choose one quiet register and stay with it: the Ritz-Carlton-inspired white tea, bergamot and cedar as the broadest choice, the Westin-inspired white tea, aloe and cedar as the quietest, or the 1 Hotels-inspired cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves for a concrete-and-timber flat. All are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand. What does legitimately change across a day is intensity, and it changes in one direction only.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
