Air expands as it warms, which makes it less dense than the cooler air around it, which makes it rise - and every house with a staircase has a shaft for that rising air to move through. The result is a slow, continuous upward current in the stair void, running whether or not anybody is thinking about fragrance, strongest in the early evening after a warm day and gentler on a cool morning. Cold-air nebulising matters here for one reason: it breaks fragrance into a dispersion fine enough to stay suspended for a long time rather than settling near the machine, so it behaves like part of the air rather than like something sprayed into it. Hand that dispersion to the bottom of the current and it goes where the current goes. Three consequences follow, and they are the reason this section is worth reading rather than skimming. Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. If I only do one thing from this guide, what should it be?
Move the machine low and near the bottom of the stairs, and start the schedule hours earlier than feels natural. Those two changes cost nothing, they are the difference between a good ground floor and a house that reads as one house, and between them they fix most of the disappointment in this category. Height is the instinct people get wrong: a unit on a high shelf scents the ceiling standing beside it and never properly enters the stair current, because the current is picked up near the floor. Timing is the other: convection is slow, so a block that begins when the family walks in leaves the landing an hour behind for the whole evening, while a block that begins in the mid-afternoon leaves the whole vertical volume settled. If you want a third thing, check that no split air-conditioner is blowing directly across the unit, because that single fault cancels the climb entirely and is the commonest reason an upstairs landing gets nothing at all.
How do I know whether my house needs one machine or two?
Count volumes rather than floors. Walk from your front door and note every handle you turn; everything you passed through freely - entrance, living, dining, passage, the stair void and any landing open to it - is one connected volume and one machine's job, however many storeys it happens to span. A second machine is justified only when there is a genuine second volume: a door at the top of the stairs, a fully enclosed stairwell, a first-floor lounge behind its own door, or a floor the family lives on separately with its own landing and sitting area. On an open stairwell, which most Indian villas have, two units inside one volume produce two strong zones and a thin middle rather than better coverage, so the second Rs 11,999 makes the house less even. And if you do decide there are two volumes, price the ducted Aangan at Rs 25,999 against two machines at Rs 23,998 before committing, because the gap is only Rs 2,001 and the ducted route reaches rooms behind closed doors.
Why does this guide keep telling me not to buy a second machine?
Because it would be the wrong advice, and a page that sells you hardware you do not need is worth nothing to you the second time you read it. The honest position in a multi-floor villa is that a stairwell distributes upward for free, that three of the four causes of a thin upper floor are placement and timing rather than capacity, and that the one gap hardware cannot close - the bedroom doors - is closed better by a reed at Rs 749 than by a second machine at Rs 11,999. We would rather tell you that and have you buy one machine that works than sell you two that make the house less even. Where a second unit genuinely is right, this guide says so plainly: a sealed upper floor with its own landing door, or a floor the family lives on separately, both with a real connected volume of their own. And where the house needs more than any standalone machine can do, the answer is the ducted Aangan at Rs 25,999 rather than a third Vaayu at Rs 35,997.
Does any of this change if the villa has central air-conditioning?
It changes the best answer completely, and for the better. A house with genuine central or ducted air-conditioning already has a distribution network reaching every room the ducts serve, which makes the stairwell argument beside the point: the SOSA Aangan at Rs 25,999 nebulises into that airflow and carries one signature across approximately 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft including bedrooms with their doors shut, which no standalone machine does at any price. The condition is real ducting rather than split units in each room, which is the far more common arrangement in Indian villas. How gently should the machine actually run in a multi-floor family home?
More gently than most people set it, and the target is easy to describe: a level where somebody walking in reads the house as welcoming without being able to name a note. A household breathes this air for hours at a stretch rather than passing through it, and it may include children, elderly parents, someone pregnant or pets, so gentle dosing is the default rather than a compromise. Two habits keep you honest. First, you will be nose-blind to your own house within days, so the honest test is to leave for a few hours, come back and walk straight upstairs while your nose is fresh, or simply ask the first person who arrives and believe their answer over your own. Second, treat anyone in the house reporting a headache or irritation as a recalibration signal to turn it down or off in that area, rather than as something to talk them out of. And remember the order of operations: ventilate and clean first, because scent finishes clean air and never covers anything.
