What should run in an empty Goa house? A dehumidifier with a continuous drain on a humidistat, the fridge either running or emptied and propped open, and periodic operation of the air-conditioning units by a caretaker rather than continuously.
What should be switched off or opened? Water supply at the main where practical, the geyser, the scent machine, and any powered device nobody needs. Internal and wardrobe doors, the washing-machine door and the fridge door are left open.
No - and here is the list of things that should be running in an empty Goa house, because it is a real list and the diffuser is not on it
No, and rather than repeat the argument about perception, this chapter is worth spending on the practical question underneath it, which owners ask us constantly and rarely get a straight answer to: what should actually be running in a Goa house that nobody is in? Here is the list, with the reasoning, and the diffuser is not on it. Running continuously: the dehumidifier. This is the one device that earns its electricity in an empty coastal house, and it earns it comfortably. It removes the variable that governs everything else - whether your mattresses, sofas, curtains, stored linen, wardrobe contents and timber are absorbing moisture, and whether surfaces stay wet long enough for mould activity to begin. Two specifications matter. It must have a continuous drain option, hosed to a floor drain or wash area, because a bucket unit fills within a day or two and then sits idle for the rest of a three-month closure, which is the commonest way this purchase gets wasted. And it should run on a humidistat rather than flat out, set around fifty to sixty per cent relative humidity, which is comfortably below the level at which surface mould becomes a problem and well above the point where timber joinery dries out and moves. Place it in the main living volume with internal doors open so it serves more than one room, and open wardrobe and drawer doors so the enclosed spaces that go wrong first are part of the circuit. Running, or deliberately off and open: the fridge. This is a binary decision and both answers are fine, but the middle option is not. Leave it running with nothing perishable in it, or empty it, clean it, dry it and prop the door open. What must never happen is switching it off at the socket with the door closed, because the residual moisture and organic material inside a sealed unpowered box in a warm humid climate produces something considerably worse than any other smell in this cluster, and it takes real work to remove. Tell your caretaker this specifically, because the intuitive energy-saving action is exactly the wrong one. Run periodically rather than continuously: the air-conditioning units. On each caretaker visit, run every unit for ten or fifteen minutes. This exercises the system, moves the refrigerant, and - if the unit has a fan-only or dry mode - helps dry a coil that has otherwise been sitting damp in a humid room for weeks. It also gives the caretaker a chance to perform the supply-grille test: smell the air at the grille in the first minute after startup and compare with room air away from it, because a wet coil and a standing condensate tray are the commonest cause of a sour coastal house and they develop quietly while nobody is there. If the supply is the sourer of the two, book coil cleaning by name before your visit. Switched off: the geyser, which has no reason to be powered and heated for months; the water supply at the main, where the property allows it, because an unattended leak in an empty house is a far larger problem than an inconvenience on arrival; and any powered device that nobody needs, which is the category the scent machine belongs in. Left open: internal doors, wardrobe and drawer doors, the washing-machine door and its detergent drawer, and any cupboard that has ever smelled closed. Air movement is the cheapest tool you have and the enemy is stillness against a cold surface. Pull furniture a few centimetres off external walls for the same reason. Now the three specific reasons a diffuser comes off the list, since the question names one. First, there is no recipient. Perception of ambient fragrance requires a person crossing a threshold; in an empty house there is no transition, no perception and no value, only refill consumed. Second, and specific to ultrasonic machines, a tank of water standing for weeks in a sealed humid villa is stagnant water in a building whose whole problem is water. Even in a waterless machine like the Vaayu, which avoids that objection entirely, the first reason still applies. Third, an unattended appliance running for months in an empty house is a thing you should have a reason for - and here you have none, so the sensible default is off, unplugged, and the tank rinsed and dried before you leave rather than left with liquid in it to grow something over a monsoon. That last point is worth making concrete because it is where second-home owners most often go wrong with an ultrasonic machine: on your last day, empty the tank, rinse it, wipe it and leave it dry and open. Do not leave it half full with the intention of using it next visit. A reed diffuser is a slightly different case and deserves its own line. A reed cannot be switched off; it releases at its own rate for as long as it is open, which means one left in a closed house works continuously for weeks with nobody there. That is waste, and it is also a slightly odd arrival experience - the first thing you smell is a bottle that has been quietly running since March, usually much weaker than it was because reeds fade invisibly while liquid remains. So between visits, either take the reeds out of the house, or cap the bottle and stand the reeds in a sealed bag in a cupboard. Then set them up fresh on arrival, which takes a minute and gives you the register at full strength. Now what happens when somebody is coming, because that is where all of this is aimed. The preparation sequence, in order: caretaker opens the house at the start of the day and cross-ventilates on opposite sides with fans running - or, in the monsoon, flushes for ten to fifteen minutes and then closes up and lets cooling and dehumidification dry the house. Air conditioning on hard and early in the rooms that will be used. A jug of water down every floor trap. The dehumidifier left running through the preparation rather than switched off. Fridge stocked and cold. Linen aired and made up. The house cleaned with the windows still open. And then, in the last thirty to sixty minutes, the register: a Sukoon at ₹1,899 with a timer in the main enclosed living area, a Boond at ₹899 in an entrance hall, or reeds set up fresh at ₹749 in bedrooms. For a genuinely large double-height living volume, or three or four zones you want on one schedule, or a preference for no water tank in a damp-prone house, the Vaayu at ₹11,999 with app control is the right machine - and app control is genuinely useful in this application specifically, because it lets a manager start the schedule from a phone when your flight lands rather than guessing. And the standing exclusions apply in a private house exactly as in a let one: nothing in kitchens, nothing in bathrooms, nothing on verandahs, courtyards or pool decks, nothing in bedrooms overnight, nothing sprayed onto textiles, and nothing injected into the air-conditioning system. On register, for a house that spends most of its time closed: Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, and White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar. Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, for timber and laterite. All alcohol-free and made to IFRA standards. SOSA makes no health, mood or review-score claims.
What to leave switched on, and what to switch off
Save the register for the half hour before somebody arrives, and set reeds up fresh rather than leaving them working through the closure, because reeds fade invisibly and a bottle that has been open since March is much weaker than it looks. Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, and White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, are our two recommendations for a coastal house. Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, suits timber and laterite properties. Empty, rinse and dry an ultrasonic tank on your last day rather than leaving liquid in it.
| Scent | Why it suits the mood |
|---|---|
| Continuously on | Dehumidifier with a continuous drain and a humidistat at fifty to sixty per cent. The only one earning it |
| Decided, not defaulted | The fridge: running, or emptied, cleaned, dried and propped open. Never off with the door shut |
| Run periodically | Each AC unit for fifteen minutes per caretaker visit, with a supply-grille smell test while it runs |
| Off and open | Geyser, water main where practical, scent machine unplugged and tank dry. Internal and wardrobe doors open |

The SOSA commercial edit for Goa
Every SOSA product here is alcohol-free and made in small batches in India, and everything below applies to customer-facing zones only. Clinical and procedure rooms, kitchens and pantries, chemical or detailing bays, sanitary areas and back-of-house are not scented, and that is a boundary rather than a preference - somebody undressed, sedated or immobile cannot object to the air, a kitchen should smell of what it is cooking, and a workshop needs extraction rather than perfume. Covered outdoor areas cannot hold fragrance at all. Fix what the building is producing at source before adding anything, because fragrance combines with dust, pantry smells and chemical odours rather than removing them. SOSA makes no health, mood, productivity or spend claims. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the edit.
| Product | Best for | Why it works | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOSA Vaayu | Large villas, double-height living rooms, hotel lobbies | Waterless cold-air nebuliser, around 1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer so business hours and a low setting are fixed once instead of remembered daily | ₹11,999 |
| SOSA Megh (6L) + Hotel Collection | Mid-size villa living areas & long guest stays | 6-litre tank, so no machine is serviced during customer hours - which is itself a source of inconsistency | ₹3,499 |
| SOSA Sukoon (500ml) + Hotel Collection | Standard villa arrival area, boutique reception | 500ml with a timer. The workhorse for a normal customer-facing room | ₹1,899 |
| SOSA Boond (300ml) + Hotel Collection | Bedrooms, bridal suites, small enclosed lounges | 300ml mini - one per small enclosed room rather than over-driving a larger machine down a corridor | ₹899 |
| Mountain Breeze or Morning Freshness reed | Heritage rooms, bedrooms, no-plug corners | Alcohol-free reed oil, no power, no water, nothing humming and no dial for anybody to adjust mid-meeting. 50ml lasts six to ten weeks | ₹749 |
Versailles
Most Goa properties that call us are already beautiful, and the question underneath the question is usually the same: why does a house that photographs like a hotel not feel like one when the guest walks in. Part of the answer is air, and part of it is not. So before we sell anybody a machine we ask what the building is currently producing - a monsoon that shut the house for six weeks, an AC condensate tray nobody drained, wardrobes and mattresses that have been quietly absorbing coastal humidity, a kitchen two doors from the living room, a drain in a bathroom that dried out while the villa was closed. Fragrance combines with all of that rather than removing it, so a register over an unaddressed damp source gives you both smells at once plus the clear impression that somebody was covering something.
The second thing I insist on is the neutral list. Clinical and procedure rooms, kitchens and pantries, chemical bays, sanitary areas and back-of-house get nothing. A patient who is undressed or immobile cannot object to the air, a kitchen should smell of what it is cooking, and a workshop needs extraction rather than perfume. Covered outdoor areas cannot hold fragrance at all. That list is shorter than the list of rooms you can compose, and holding it is what separates a considered building from a sprayed one.
And to be plain about what we do not claim: we make no health, mood, productivity, dwell-time or spend claims. Ambient fragrance does not improve focus, does not affect wellbeing and does not make anybody buy more. It gives a room clean, consistent, composed air, which is worth paying for and is the whole of it. We also make seven registers rather than bespoke ones, and I would rather say so now than let anybody imagine otherwise. Made in India, and a part of every order supports girl-child education.
Frequently asked questions
Facts verified September 2026: SOSA makes no health, therapeutic, mood, productivity, dwell-time or spend claims of any kind. Ambient fragrance is for the air of a room only; it does not treat, prevent, diagnose or affect any condition, does not improve concentration, alertness, wellbeing or mood, and does not influence purchase behaviour, spend or time spent in a space. SOSA recommends that the following zones remain fragrance-free: clinical, procedure and treatment rooms, dental operatories, any room where a person is undressed, sedated or immobile, kitchens, pantries and food-preparation areas, active workshop, detailing or chemical bays, sanitary areas, and back-of-house or utility spaces, all of which require extraction rather than fragrance. Covered outdoor and semi-outdoor areas cannot hold a perceptible fragrance level because air movement there is unbounded. Characteristic commercial-building odours arise from street dust and outdoor air, loaded HVAC filters and coils, condensate drain pans and dried floor traps, food and pantry activity, damp and monsoon humidity, cleaning chemistry such as strong phenyl and pine disinfectants, and workshop or detailing chemicals; these are addressed by filtration and maintenance, extraction, drain and trap checks, surface-chemistry selection and adequate air-change rates, not by ambient fragrance, which combines with an existing odour rather than removing it. A diffuser scents the volume of air that mixes freely around it, so coverage stops at the first closed door and device counts follow enclosed volumes rather than floor area; high ceilings, glass facades, strong air-conditioning throw and frequent door movement all reduce the level a given output achieves. Volatility rises with temperature, so the same setting reads stronger in a hot afternoon than a cool morning. SOSA Vaayu is a waterless cold-air nebuliser with Bluetooth app and timer, around 1000m³ coverage, ₹11,999, supplied with four hotel-inspired scents. Ultrasonic cool-mist diffusers: Boond 300ml ₹899, Sukoon 500ml ₹1,899, Megh 6L ₹3,499, each supplied with three hotel-inspired scents. The Hotel Collection is a water-based fragrance for ultrasonic diffusers only - 15ml ₹299, 100ml ₹999, 300ml ₹1,799, at three to six drops per tank with the tank rinsed between scents; it is not for reed diffusers or waterless nebulisers, and raw essential or carrier oils must never be used in an ultrasonic machine. Reed diffusers use alcohol-free reed oil with no power or water: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 for 50ml, 130ml from ₹1,249, refills ₹2,399 for 300ml and ₹3,499 for 500ml; a 50ml bottle lasts roughly six to ten weeks in calm air. The seven registers are SOSA's own interpretations composed in India - Quiet Luxury (white tea, bergamot, cedar), White Tea Serenity (white tea, aloe, cedar), Forest Suite (cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves), Old-World Glamour (amber, violet, woods), Tea Garden (jasmine, green tea, white tea), Warm Welcome (citrus, floral, sandalwood) and Lobby Bar (citrus, pepper, amber).
