No. Or if you insist, at the absolute minimum the machine can produce, on a schedule that avoids your peak hours. This is the one recommendation on our site that costs us a sale and we make it anyway, because it is the honest one. A cardio zone is a room full of people at the highest sustained breathing rate they will reach all week, holding that rate for twenty, thirty or forty continuous minutes, often with a fan blowing straight into their face. Every one of those conditions increases the rate at which whatever is in the air is delivered to them. The setting that reads as barely-there elegance at your reception desk does not read that way at minute twenty of an interval session.
Quick answers — read this first
Should the cardio zone of a gym be fragranced? Our honest answer is no, or at the absolute minimum. The cardio zone should be the lowest-dose area in the building and in most clubs the best configuration is to leave it unscented and let it receive only what drifts in from adjacent areas. The reason is delivery rate. A member on a treadmill or a bike moves many times the air per minute that the same member moved standing at your reception desk, so an identical setting is delivered to them at a far higher rate and is experienced as far more intense. This is a perception and dosing point and nothing more: we make no health claim in either direction, neither that ambient fragrance is harmful during exercise nor that it is beneficial. The calibration fact is sufficient on its own, and it points at less.

Why is the cardio zone the lowest-dose area in a gym? Four things stack in the same direction. Breathing rate: cardio work is where sustained respiratory effort is highest and it is held continuously rather than in bursts. Duration: a treadmill session is twenty to forty unbroken minutes in one spot, unlike a strength session that moves around the floor. Airflow at the face: most cardio banks have personal fans, ceiling fans or a supply diffuser pointed at them, which pushes room air directly at the user. And heat: the zone runs warm, which increases evaporation from every scented surface in it. A member cannot walk away from a scent they dislike while they are eighteen minutes into a run, which is the practical difference between this room and a shop.

What should I do instead of scenting the cardio zone? Put the machine at the arrival end of the building and let the cardio zone receive drift. Get the source work right first, because fragrance adds scent to air and never removes odour: ventilation sized for the actual occupancy, cleaning of machine seats, handle grips and any fabric on the frames, and towel discipline. Then scent reception properly, keep the same register everywhere so the building stays coherent, and accept that the cardio floor will smell faintly of it and mostly of clean moving air. If you genuinely want something in that zone, use the same register at the lowest setting the machine offers and schedule it by the clock into your quiet hours using the Vaayu app and timer, at Rs 11,999. Never during peak. And treat one member complaint as a signal to come down.
The short answer
Short answer: No, or at the absolute minimum. The cardio zone is the lowest-dose area in a gym and in most clubs the right answer is to leave it unscented and let it receive only drift from adjacent zones. A member on a treadmill moves many times the air per minute that the same person moves at reception, so the identical setting is delivered at a far higher rate and experienced as far stronger - a perception and dosing fact, with no health claim in either direction. Duration, fans blowing at the face and a warm room all push the same way. Scent the arrival instead, keep one register across the club, and treat any member who says it is too much on a treadmill as a recalibration signal. Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
Should I put a scent machine in my cardio zone?
Our honest answer is no, and here is the whole reasoning in five steps. 1. The delivery rate is the entire argument. A person on a treadmill is moving many times the volume of air per minute that the same person moved standing at your desk. Nothing about the machine changes, but the rate at which the air reaches them does, so the identical setting is experienced as dramatically stronger. That is calibration, not safety: we make no health claim in either direction. 2. Three other factors stack on top. Duration - a cardio session is twenty to forty unbroken minutes in one spot. Airflow - most cardio banks have personal fans, ceiling fans or a supply diffuser aimed at the user, pushing room air at their face. Heat - a warm zone evaporates more from every scented surface in it. 3. The member cannot leave. Someone who finds a shop too strongly scented walks out in ten seconds. Someone eighteen minutes into a run has already committed, and their alternative is to abandon a session they came for. 4. So the configuration is: scent the arrival, and let cardio receive drift. Put a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, waterless, ~1000m³ of connected air, Bluetooth app and timer) at the front of house, hold one register from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) across the building, and let the cardio floor smell faintly of it and mostly of clean, moving air. That is not a compromise. That is the target. 5. If you insist on something in the zone. Same register, lowest setting the machine has, scheduled by the clock into genuinely quiet hours and off during peak. The Vaayu's timer makes clock scheduling real; there is no occupancy sensing on it and we will not pretend otherwise. Source control, ventilation and cleaning come first regardless - fragrance adds scent and never removes odour, and we would never suggest reducing fresh-air exchange to make anything last longer. A member who says it is too much on a treadmill is telling you the setting is wrong, not that they are unusual. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your floor area, ceiling height and zone list. Why the cardio floor is the lowest-dose room in commercial scenting

Three parts: the delivery-rate argument stated precisely and kept inside its limits, the three factors that stack on top of it, and what a good cardio zone should actually smell of.

Why this works
Why we recommend nothing here, and what to do instead
1Breathing hard means the same setting is delivered at a far higher rate2Fans at the face, long sessions and a warm room all push the same way3Leave cardio unscented and let it receive drift from the arrival zone4Scent the front instead: Vaayu Rs 11,999, one register from Rs 299
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The argument
Delivery rate, stated precisely and kept inside its limits
Everything on this page rests on one fact and it is worth stating carefully, because it is easy to overstate and we are not going to. A person at rest moves a modest volume of air per minute. The same person working hard on a treadmill or a bike moves many times that, continuously, for as long as the session lasts. Ambient fragrance is carried in air. So the amount of scented air passing through that person per minute is many times what passes through the person standing at your reception desk, even though both rooms may be running from the same machine at the same setting. The consequence is entirely about experience: the intensity a member perceives on the cardio floor is far higher than the intensity you perceive when you set the dial. That is the whole claim. We are not saying ambient fragrance is harmful during exercise. We are not saying it is beneficial during exercise. Neither of those is a claim SOSA makes or should make, and any brand telling you either one is selling past what it knows. What we are saying is narrower and completely sufficient: your setting is not the member's experience, the gap between them is widest exactly where people are working hardest, and some proportion of your members will find in that gap something they actively dislike. In a retail space that member leaves. In a cardio zone they are eighteen minutes into a run they came here to do. That asymmetry is why our recommendation for this one room is less than for any other commercial space we write about.
Tip: your setting is not the member's experience, and the gap between them is widest exactly where they are working hardest.
2
The stack
Three more factors, all pointing the same way
Breathing rate alone would be enough. Three other properties of a cardio zone stack on top of it. Duration and position. A strength session moves - rack to bench to cable to floor - so a member passes through many small volumes of air. A cardio session does not move at all. Twenty to forty unbroken minutes on one machine in one spot means the member is sampling one specific pocket of your building continuously, and if that pocket happens to sit in the path of a diffuser output, they get all of it. Air moved at the face. Almost every cardio bank in a premium club has fans: built-in console fans on the treadmills, pedestal or ceiling fans overhead, and usually a supply diffuser positioned above the machines because that is where the cooling load is. All of them are doing the same thing, which is pushing room air directly at a face at speed. Anything in that room air is being actively delivered rather than passively encountered. Heat. The zone runs several degrees warmer than your reception during peak, because it is full of working bodies. Warmth increases evaporation from every scented surface in the room, so the cardio floor is simultaneously the zone that can take the least and the zone that is most efficient at releasing whatever it is given. Add those three to the breathing argument and you have four independent reasons pointing in one direction, with nothing at all pointing the other way except a general sense that a premium club ought to smell of something everywhere. It should not. It should smell of clean, moving air where people are working.
3
The alternative
What a good cardio zone actually smells of
Clean, moving air with a faint trace of the building's register arriving from somewhere else. That is the target and it is a genuinely good outcome, not a failure to achieve one. Getting there is mostly not a fragrance job. Ventilation comes first and it is the largest lever in the building: a cardio zone needs supply and return sized for the actual occupancy at peak, not for the floor area, and if it is undersized nothing else you do will matter. We would never suggest reducing fresh-air exchange so a fragrance lasts longer - in a room full of people breathing hard that would be indefensible advice, and a hard-ventilated gym being difficult to scent is a trade-off we state honestly rather than argue with. Then cleaning, on the things people actually touch and sweat into: machine seats and back pads, handle grips, console surfaces, any fabric on the frames, and the floor mats under the machines. Then towel discipline, because a used towel left on a treadmill handle for an hour in a warm room does more to the smell of that zone than any diffuser setting. Only then, fragrance - and it belongs at the arrival, not here. Put a Vaayu (₹11,999) at the front of house running one register from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299), let the corridor carry a thinned version of it, and let the cardio floor be the quietest air in the club. Members will not notice, which is the point. What they would notice is the alternative.
Tip: a cardio floor that smells of clean moving air has succeeded - that is the target, not a consolation prize.
The SOSA principle
This is the one page where we argue against our own product. The cardio zone should be the quietest air in the building, and in most clubs that means nothing at all.
The same setting is delivered many times faster to a person on a treadmill than to a person at your desk. Scent the arrival, and let the cardio floor receive only what reaches it.

What to do instead, and where the machine actually belongs

So the machine goes at the front of the building, and the cardio zone is planned around what it does not get.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Is ambient fragrance in a cardio zone unsafe?
That is not a claim we make, in either direction, and we would be wary of anyone who does. SOSA is an expert in air and fragrance, not in exercise physiology or medicine, and we are not going to tell you that ambient scent is harmful during exercise or that it is beneficial during exercise. What we are qualified to talk about is dosing and perception, and on that basis the recommendation is clear enough without any health argument attached: a person breathing hard receives far more of whatever is in the air per minute than a person standing still, so the same setting is experienced as far more intense, and some members will simply find that unpleasant while they are working. That is a calibration fact and it is sufficient to justify keeping this zone at or near nothing. If a member raises a specific personal sensitivity with you, that is a conversation for them and their doctor, and our advice is simply to lower the setting.
My cardio zone is right next to reception and clearly picks up the scent. Is that a problem?
That is usually the correct amount, and it is the configuration we would design towards deliberately. Drift from an adjacent zone arrives thinned by distance, dilution and your ventilation, which means the cardio floor gets a trace of the building's character rather than a dose of it, and the member perceives continuity rather than a second product. The thing to check is direction and placement rather than presence: make sure the machine at the front is not pointed down the sightline into the cardio bank, and that it is not sitting near a supply grille that feeds that zone, because both of those turn drift into delivery. Stand on a treadmill at peak for ten minutes and judge it there rather than at the desk. If you can clearly identify a fragrance while working, come down a notch at the source. The desk will still read fine.
A member said the scent was overwhelming on the treadmill. What should I do?
Come down, immediately, and thank them properly. A report like that is a recalibration signal, not a tolerance problem, and it is one of the most useful pieces of information you will get all year, because the people who feel it most are the least likely to mention it. In practice: reduce the setting at the source rather than adding anything anywhere, check that the machine is not aimed at or feeding into the cardio bank, and if the report came from the cardio zone specifically, consider taking that zone to zero and running the fragrance only at the front. Then go back to the member in a week and ask. Bear in mind that your club includes people who are pregnant, asthmatic, migraine-prone or fragrance-sensitive, and that gentle dosing is the default for that reason. One complaint from a working member outweighs several compliments from people standing at a desk.
Can I run fragrance in the cardio zone only during off-peak hours?
Yes, and if you are determined to have something in that zone, this is the least bad version of it. The SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 has a Bluetooth app and a timer, so scheduling by the clock is real and we are happy to recommend it: run it in genuinely quiet windows, off entirely through your morning and evening peaks, and at the lowest setting the machine offers. What we will not imply is that the machine knows how busy the room is. There is no published occupancy sensing on it and it does not detect how many people are in the zone, so this is clock-based scheduling that depends on you knowing your own traffic pattern. Also be honest about what off-peak scenting achieves: the zone will smell of it when almost nobody is in there, and of very little when it is full. If that sounds like an odd result, it is, and it is a reason to reconsider scenting the zone at all.
Another club I visited had a strong scent on its cardio floor and members seemed to love it. Why not copy that?
Three honest answers. First, you are sampling the people who stayed, not the people who tried it once and quietly trained somewhere else, and that is a selection effect no visit can correct for. Second, what you experienced as a visitor walking around is not what a member experiences at minute twenty of an interval session, which is the case this whole page is about. Third, and most importantly, nobody can tell you that it is doing anything for that club commercially. Ambient scent research supports better evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell and stronger recall at moderate effect sizes; it does not support any claim about sign-ups, retention, renewals or fees, and we will not make one. If you want the presentation benefit, take it at the arrival where it is uncontroversial and costs you nothing in member comfort. That is the same benefit with none of the risk.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
